Hello to all. Hope this finds you all well and safe and healthy. I really am missing some of you - you need to check in!
It is a lovely morning here. At the moment the temps are just blissful! Probably isn't going to last too many more days. Next week is supposed to be in the 90's again, and according to the projected outlook the week after will be even hotter.
I have spent the morning feeding the cats and getting the squirrel and birdies food out. I also spent time wrangling racoons out of the yard while the younger cats ate. Mom and Pip take no stuff from the racoons and hiss and get in their faces; the younger ones don't know to do that yet. So, they ate, and the food has come back in for the time being. The racoons only seem to want the cat food - they couldn't care less about corn or peanuts!!! The racoons will honker down after it gets warmer - then the food will go back out. You would think I live in the country!!! LOL
Just call me the 'racoon wrangler'!
I have managed to work outside a lot the past couple days - it felt good to be out in the fresh air, and somehow the exercise and sweating help release tension. I was out weed whacking the other day and decided to clear an area that had some weeds poking through. I have a skid (pallet) sitting out back on 4 x 4's and use it for pots and such - and the cats like to sunbathe there (on cooler days). Well weeds were coming up through it, so I lifted it and rested it against the fence - and as I bent over the dang thing fell. I put my hand up and it hit the end of my thumb (not my head). Holy cow that hurt. I had bleeding under the nail, and I thought maybe it was broken. Amazingly it didn't break the nail, which is a nice longer nail - lol. Well, the thumb isn't broken, but it sure is sore and swollen. Just a spit second - Geesh!!!!
I have been enjoying watching bright yellow gold finches out front on the volunteer sunflowers! They are the color of the flowers and they are so beautiful. The sit the on the younger flowers eating the seeds. I also have lots of echinacea blooming for them as well.
I have enjoyed having windows open some this week and fresh air coming in. Yesterday afternoon I sat down and had an ice-cold glass of milk - goodness that tasted good. I love milk. It seems to calm me. I have been reading some this week. Just chilling in between yard work. I ran out Monday and bought a watermelon before the sale price ended. Goodness golly, it is good. Probably the best one I have had in years. It is amazing to me that something that is basically flavored water - can taste so yummy.
Watching all the nature around and eating all the wonderful summer foods - such joys. The cherry tomatoes have been tasting so good. I actually have some tiny little cukes out there on the vine - I am so excited. I planted some old seeds very late - eek! It has been years - so I am hoping!!!! Can't wait for a regular tomato!!!!!!
I am thankful for AC - it sure is a blessing. I can't imagine that some places really don't have it like we do here. It is such a gift.
I have lost weight again this summer. Seems to be a pattern. Lose weight in the summer and gain it back in the winter! Not a lot, but enough to notice a difference (for me). No one else would probably know - but I do and it feels good. Moving, sweating and more healthy eating can make a difference.
Well, I guess I have gabbed enough about the good and trials in my quiet and simple life.
It is funny how we seem to notice smaller things that bring joy and sadness, when our life is simple. I think that is neat - the little things are wonderful and they count.
What are some of the small things that grab your attention?
Have a special day, be happy, and be kind.

I now how you feel - I'm the oldest "blood" in my family. I have a sister-in-law who is older, but she's an in-law! It is a strange feeling to be oldest, and I miss my brothers so much it is hard to express, much less to deal with.
ReplyDeleteGlad you did not break your thumb. We're both suffering hand injuries, as I slammed my finger in the car door a week ago, what a shock... the nail is a very interesting color, and quite tender to touch. At least the majority of the red and swelling has gone down. Breaking a thumb would be much worse than breaking a finger!
I do hope the temps will stay moderate for another 10 days or so.
MaryB
Exactly - my SIL is older, but of the blood line it is me now, as an aunt. Now my brother is the eldest.
DeleteOh no. That sounds horrid. I wonder if you will lose the nail? I did that once in the garage door and it took a while, but I did lose the nail. It came back - but dang. I bet that made you just so sick at your tummy!
It is funny how many things I use the thumb for - never realized it until that moment!
I hope your temps moderate - I don't think our will be. It is going to get VERY HOT again and for a bit of time. Today is wonderful though, and I sure do appreciate it.
Love the poem! There is much joy in our lives if we but open our eyes and hearts. One of my recent joys is discovering that the babies' breath I planted last year has come back. Also we have evidence of figs on one of the newer fig trees.
ReplyDeleteYou are the family matriarch! My sister-in-law is our family matriarch even though she is not blood related. I guess that would be me. Shall we get crowns and scepters? ha!
Sorry to hear about your mishap with your thumb. Ouch! Good thing it is not broken. Gardening and yardwork can be hazardous to your health. Something stung the Farmer's gloved hand yesterday and he reacted and swatted at it. The top of his hand is entirely bruised like he ran into something. We don't think the bruising is from the sting but the swat. Part of summer weight loss is more activity and more sweating...ha! I'm hoping to lose my winter weight.
The watermelons we have had this year have all been good. Nothing like ice cold watermelon on a hot day. He brought in two tiny cherry tomatoes, the first of many we hope.
Enjoy your weekend! See you on Sunday.
Yes mam, we just need to look and appreciate. There is so much. Yay on the baby breath and figs.
DeleteOh my, matriarch sounds old!
I am glad it isn't broken too. The more I use it, the better it feels - but moving it does cause some discomfort! Hope his hand is ok. Luckily I haven't been stung yet this year - probably just jinxed myself.
Watermelon is so refreshing. Nothing like a good ripe one.
YAY on tiny toms!!!!
So many simple joys. The timely blooms of peonies & cacti. Blooms on the Borden rose. Fog over the river valley. Wildlife sightings. A phone call from someone who was on my mind. A fresh-baked rhubarb pie. Card games with friends. The neighbor little. Oh, I could go on & on.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful list of joy!!!!!! Those simple little things can truly change a day from a frown to a smile - IF we just pay attention and look for them. Life truly is glorious!
DeleteWe have 4-H fair next week so of course it will be hot LOL. It is nice right now but temps going up this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteMy allergies are off the charts but getting thru it.
My garden is a total bust this year, planted twice but nothing germinated. Oh well, there is always next year, the family also has gardens so there should be plenty. I don't like fresh tomatoes, but I do like everything else.
Tonight I teach the 11-year-old grand how to make biscuits, it is her 4-H project.
JC
Teach to make biscuits? That should be fun. Do you teach her how to make self-rising flour as well? I like to make *one* biscuit for myself - on the stovetop as I refuse to use oven in summer for anything if I can avoid it. I do hope my biscuit making will not make me fat, but I have been enjoying each one as my dessert after supper. Yum. :)

It makes me feel good to see a bunny in the yard, a cardinel (unusual in my yard), the small brown lizards, a rainbow, cows of different colors all together, open fields along the coastline and an island in the distance, red, white and blue flowering grasses all together (unusual) and so many other things in nature.
ReplyDeleteIt is very hot here, even for us. It is 89 F. at 10 a.m. and the high will be 94 today. No real breaks going forward from what I can see but there are rain chances several days. Barbara M.
I know you like positivity about everything, but there are things that frustrate me. Right now it is the Post Office. (I’m thankful I get 95% of important things by email.) I need to find a place, Cheryl, where I can express my angst from time to time without feeling bad. So I may not participate as often but all the best. Barbara M.
DeleteI seem to be missing posts every few days. I do want to extend the sympatihies on the passing of your Sis. She certainly lived a long and full life, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
ReplyDeleteI too, am thankful for a/c. The temperatures are on the rise here, and by mid-morning open windows have to be closed. With a storm this morning, the humidity is high and our two dehumidifiers are working overtime.
I'm glad you weren't too badly hurt by the pallet. Had it hit your head, it would have been a different story. Great relfexes! Take care and enjoy your breaks.
