Hello all, glad to have you here. Hope you are all doing well.
It is 52* outside this morning. This is just so crazy. That should almost be the high for this time of year and it was the low. Another day in the 70's today. Listening to the news this morning, they said we have had the warmest fall on record. This month we have had like 24 days in the 70's, and more to come!
We do have color all around now.
I have been out and fed all this morning and just settling down with my morning drink. This morning was uneventful, thank goodness. Yesterday not so much. I am like the world's biggest clutz! Seriously - I have always been the one to trip over my feet or run into a wall that has been there forever. Yesterday while getting ready to feed (not full daylight yet), my feet got tangled and down I went off the deck! It is about 4" above the sidewalk. I went backwards and just kept saying out loud "no, no, no". I hit the walk on my butt, luckily my head didn't hit anything. My shoes went flying, my glasses went flying, and the cats went flying! My elbow is scuffed up w/ a knot (through 3 layers of shirts). Oh, my bottom hurts (muscle not bone), but luckily nothing hurt too bad, except my pride! This is why I always keep a phone on me. I was in a spot that no one would have seen me. I must have good bones, and God surely had me in His hands.
A few Ibuprofen and I am pretty good. Just jarred and shaken. Too much excitement for this old lady!
So there you have my scary event of the week - hoping that is it!
Sometimes I just have to tell myself NO! I am not a big shopper, but I do love a grocery store. I keep thinking about going to Aldi, as I haven't been in a while. I had plans to go this week, and I have talked myself out of it. I don't NEED a thing!
I will go sometime in the next month, but I have to ask myself, "why go, if you need nothing". If I go, I will NOT walk out empty handed! I will buy.
I have a freezer full of food. My frig is full. My pantry is more than full. The only thing I might need to buy are items for Christmas baskets - which will happen soon.
As I have been organizing and cleaning in the basement, I have realized just how much home canned stuff I still have and that I need to use. It used to all be stored down there, and now I am working on getting it all upstairs (carefully!). Heck, I came across 2 quart jars of dehydrated mushrooms, I forgot about. I thought I was about out. I have a cart down there with lots of honey and flavored vinegars, and vanilla.
I am good to go.
My only thing that needs to be done on a regular basis is - you guessed it - cat food! I plan on purchasing that each week or so, and I also plan on making a good Chewy order, soon.
Do you find yourself just going and buying each week? Is anyone else like me - you just love the grocery? I love finding deals and clearance, but I have to look at what I have and know when enough is enough. At least for a while.
What do you have to stop and say NO to? Inquiring minds want to know!
Have a lovely day my friends.

Gee whiz, I'm glad you didn't break yourself! Or one of the cats. I'm kinda clumsy, and stumble around in this house like I don't know where I'm going or can't see. It's really dangerous at night, so I have a red-light flashlight by my bed. The red light does not blind me like a regular flashlight would, so if I get up in the night that's what I use.
ReplyDeleteMy grocery needs are usually milk or bread and that is weekly if not more often. I'm getting better about only buying what's on my list, and that helps. :)
MaryB
LOL - I am glad I didn't break myself as well! I do pretty good most times, but I can be very clumsy! Have been that way since I was a child. After spending a year in bed, I had to learn how to walk all over at 6. I think that may have something to do with it.
DeleteGood for you for sticking to the list.
I'm very glad you are okay! - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteThank you - me too!
DeleteI have to be careful about buying too much sale protein. I've shared this story before: I decided to eat down the freezer before adding anymore meat. It took 6 mos. That's why I usually shop at home - take stock of what's in the freezer & pantry & go from there. Be careful out there, Cheryl. You know - remove trip hazards, good shoes & lighting, take your time.
ReplyDeleteShopping at home is now my challenge. I need to do so much more of that. Meat is a problem here as well, lots of it and just me! You are wise.
DeleteI am usually in a hurry for some reason, and I have been wearing slides out there - going back to tennis shoes. Life is too short and it gets scary, so I need to mind my P's & Q's,
Yikes, glad you are okay! Once you start falling, the no no no no starts but it doesn't stop the descent. I bet the kitties scattered. Miss Mona is right - slow down. Anytime I have fallen, I was distracted, in a hurry, or wearing the wrong shoes.
ReplyDeleteDo you have good shoes on your feet? I had to give up a pair of slides that were hazardous to my bones.
I checked out Amazon for the red-light flashlight that Miss MaryB used, and put one on my wish list. The Farmer is especially light sensitive with his macular degeneration, so it would be good for him. There are some things we have in multiple locations in the house: flashlights, measuring tapes, and scissors. I used to work for a lady who had a "point of use" mindset. Works for me!
I used to have a need/want attitude toward shopping. These days it is more need than want. We need to go through the freezers and use up some of the meats. It's too easy to see a bargain and then get it home only to realize that the freezers are already pretty much stuffed full. Overfull freezers can cause mechanical problems. No really good air flow.
I am loving the new washer. It is ever so much better than the Maytag, even when it was new. Much less noise and the timer is golden! Doesn't shimmy like a party girl! ha!
Enjoy this beautiful day! We are off to run errands.
It was like I was in slow motion, I heard myself and felt myself falling - then BOOM. I do need to slow down and I do need to ditch the slides I wear for morning.
DeleteI have seen those lights on TV, but never in life. I have flashlights all over the house and one in my jacket pocket when going out in the morning and evening.
Same here, buy meats on deal - already have too much.
Glad you like you washer! That is funny!
Beautiful day for sure.
Cheryl, I’m glad that you were not badly hurt. Things happen so fast. I know several people our age who have had recent falls. One was on vacation and fell and got a bad black eye. When I was getting my townhouse ready to sell I fell backwards from the second step of the stepstool but like you I landed on my bottom and didn't hit my head and it was a carpeted area. Barbara M.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It happens in a flash and that is what is so scary.
DeleteThat is a pretty high fall - glad you were ok. Glad you had carpet to land on.
I am sore in the backend region - but I sure do feel fortunate. I have thanked God many times since yesterday morning!
Sorry about the fall. I even hit my arm occasionally on a doorknob in my house. I have lived in this house 40 years. What the??? My bruise lasts a good 3 weeks. ugh.
ReplyDeleteI am like you with groceries. I do like the grocery store. I have to talk myself out of going. I have lots of food and a full upright freezer. It's just hard to resist a bargain to stash away. I detest clothes shopping as it's overwhelming to me.
I get asked at doctor check ups if I have fallen in the last year. Always say "no"...or that will lead to a million other scenarios and appointments.
I guess I am not the only one!!! Accidents, especially if clumsy, sure do humble!
DeleteYes mam, it is tough to talk myself out of a deal - best to not go. Out of sight......
That is a good suggestion - they will find a test somewhere to take your money. I really doubt that there is a test for clumsy!! Might be - but doubt it.
Wowsers, so glad you are okay, and only have a wounded pride.
ReplyDeleteTake care, of yourself and others, Louise
Thanks - a little sore, but that is it. Very lucky for sure.
DeleteI have to watch out and be mindful - a whole lot of cats depend on me!!!!
Glad you are okay, I usually feel sorer a couple days afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI for one detest going to the store LOL, but I live rural and it is hard to blast me from my cozy property. I try to only go 1 time a month but only if I don't need salad stuff....I have full freezers, fridge, and pantries so I don't have to go. Luckily one DD works in town and can pick up any immediate need.
When I do go to the store I will buy mark downs for those in the family that need/will use them. Trying to use coupons and get bargains is just about an Olympic sport these days.
JC
Yes, my bottom is pretty sore today - but that as well as my pride will heal!
DeleteOh the discipline! Once a month is excellent. Nice that you daughter can pick up things if needed.
I kind of look at it as a sport - find the best of the best deals. Nice that you look out for others as well.
Oh, dear I am so glad you were not seriously hurt. We are just getting too old to fall hard. I too need to avoid the grocery store as it is my weakness.
ReplyDeleteThanks - God was holding me. Yes indeed, it sure jars every part of the body!
DeleteThe grocery is my weakness as well - best to say no and stay home.
Oh my gosh...very scary. You may feel the impact even more in another day so be kind to yourself. I am doing little shopping but now will keep an eye out for Thanksgiving and Christmas supplies. Chocolate is so expensive right now, abd thats what I use a lot of for holiday treats, so really hoping someone has a sale.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I feel it more this afternoon. Didn't much of anything today.
DeleteYes, it is time to watch for those holiday deals. Keep eyes open for choc. chips and baking chocolate. OR get your chocolate after Halloween on sales!!!!!! Just chop it up - it's all good!
Hi Cheryl,
ReplyDeleteI’m just like that. I have a real hard time passing up the loss leaders even if I don’t need them. I too am trying harder to pass them up but am not always successful.
Thanks for your blog. I enjoy reading it.
I hope you heal quickly. Take care. Sue in MN
I've had a couple of heavy falls and that moment when you are mid air anticipating hitting the deck is horrible. I hope it doesn't take too long for your bangs and bruises to heal.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that there is any one product that I have to force myself to say no to, but I do have to be careful regarding those 'buy two, get the third half price' offers. Do I use that thing often? Does the storage space required justify the purchase? I have a very small kitchen, so that is something I always have to factor in. Finally, is there a cheaper alternative to the 'special offer' that perhaps isn't quite so special after all. I really find grocery shopping a chore.
I'm glad you're not seriously injured! Does your deck need rails at this point?
ReplyDeleteI seriously dislike shopping.....so temptation to go just because? Not this girl. If the weather is bad, I will go walk the local Fred Meyer, every isle and I can get in nearly 2 miles! I will buy my favorite dark chocolate bar, so there is that. (it is just 2 miles away).
I've been working on emptying the fridge again. I sauted green onions with baby turnips. I filled a bowl, sprinkled on shredded cheese and oh my that was a tasty meal! Corn on the cob is consumed, all the greens sauted with onion and frozen chunks for winter veggie quiches. Final CSA pickup for 2026 is this afternoon and we fly out to my nieces' Sunday morning so I've got some work ahead of me for anything that won't last until Nov 11.
Never do I recall tomato plants lasting until October 28. Frost bit them yesterday morning but the fruit was still good (not at all ripe d/t terrible summer hail then heat). I picked what I wanted to deal with and invited my neighbor to the rest. She came with a 10 gallon bin and we filled it to overflow! She/hubster will enjoy them into winter. I spent 2 hours pulling up the detritus, forking the soil, topping with 2 inches of leaves and then some fresh soil to let winter and earthworms do their job for next year!
Happy Thursday ya'll!
Thanks - oh, it has rails. This was the spot you step up on it. Feet got all tangled and I tried to correct and back I went.
DeleteGood for you on using it up and yep, you will have some work ahead of you.
I have blooms and babies on my pepper plants. Still a few green toms hanging out there - it is nuts.
Sounds like you have a good plan. I bet the neighbor loved your share.
Have safe travels and enjoy your trip!
Oh, Cheryl, I'm so glad you weren't seriously hurt. It's so scary at that moment when you are going down, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteMy mom lives in Tennessee, and we were the same temperature as she was on Sunday, which almost never happens.
Yes, it's best if I stay out of the grocery stores, too. I have what I need right now and I should use up what I already have.
Thanks - and yes mam, it all seemed to be in slow motion. My mind was just thinking - please don't let anything break. God heard me.
DeleteThe weather is really something, and it doesn't look to end soon. I sure am loving it.
I feel the old saying "out of sight out of mind", works for grocery stores! If I have my needs - just stay away.
Cheryl, Not Bossy here...we just don't bounce anymore, scary but true you are lucky. Love a grocery store and it is so hard for me to pass up the loss leaders!
ReplyDeleteNope, no bouncing! Had I bounced it might have been my head, so glad that didn't happen!!! Very fortunate!!!!
DeleteThat is why I stay out of them, when I can - I do love a deal!
Thankful you are ok. Yrs and yrs of tight budget for food -- has made me love going to grocery stores now that budget is sufficient. When we are on vacation or even in another nearby city I always pop in a grocery store.
