Hello all and happy September! It just doesn't seem possible. No pumpkin spice month for me! I am not a pumpkin spice kind of gal - unless it is a candle!! I am messed up on days again - no surprise. You would think being retired it would make no difference. Yet, the neighbors being home from work, just messes me up! LOL
It is a lovely morning again. Cool and clear. The past couple days the skies have been so blue and clear and the weather has been perfect. Everything is still very green.
I have been out and fed the birds, squirrels and Licorice. Walked out to the garden to look, and well, Chuck (groundhog) was in the garden, eating a tomato. Grrrrr. I guess it is trying to get all it needs for winter hibernation. It still lives across the alley, but right now my best efforts aren't working on keeping it at bay. The cat could care less if it sees it. This morning, I finally ran it off, over the fence and back to the hidey hole! They sure can climb!!! I threw the tomato he was eating across the alley. Generally, he eats clover and flowers and certain greenery - I suppose he is stocking up for winter too!
I guess I shouldn't complain, as I have plenty, but still!
It sure took me back about 60+ years. It was so quiet, the breeze was nice, the sky blue and just so relaxing. I thought about sitting on the porch swing at mom and daddies on Sundays. I remember coming home from Sunday school or Church and setting out there until mid-day dinner was done. Waiting for company to show up - there was always company on Sunday noon meal. Watching for cars to go by, there were hardly any. Listening to the birds and petting my kitty (who always got on the swing with me). Just the lazy days of summer. Lots of memories this weekend.
Yesterday on my walk, I talked with a gal down the street, and she was talking about how she wished life was simple again. Mine kind of is. Being retired, I can do what I want, when I want, or NOT if I want! I like that kind of simple living.
I sure miss my long-ago home.
The hummingbirds are just so very, very active. I bet it won't be long before they take off for the south. They just drink and drink and come many, many times an hour. Haven't seen them active all summer.
That makes me sad, I sure do appreciate those tiny little treasures.
I mentioned Sunday, about picking lots more tomatoes last week. I forgot to tell you about the jumbo tomato I got! Its weight - 1 lb. and 11 oz.!!!!! Oh my gosh - I am just awestruck! This has sure been a good year for tomatoes in my area.
That is it on a dinner plate! It is so huge.I really have had a great year for tomatoes! Blessed for sure. I have given so many away, I have been canning and EATING every single day!!!!!!!
I have 3 or 4 more out there (green) that are close to this size. So many green tomatoes out there.
OK, guys, I saw my first Christmas commercial on Friday evening! YEP!!!!
It was a holiday commercial for Disney World. So, the onslaught has started - there will be more and more now that we are in September.
I haven't watched Hallmark in years, but I notice on the cable guide that just about all they show is holiday movies - all year long! What is with that? There is a time for that, and all year isn't it in my opinion.
We just aren't allowed to enjoy the various holidays and seasons anymore. It seems everything is rushed. I like to celebrate the fall, with apples and pumpkins and mums. Then I want to enjoy and celebrate Thanksgiving in all its glory - THEN Christmas.
Sure, I think about Christmas, and I know many of us are already working on gifts and ideas. I even share ideas on here early in the seasons, as many make things ahead. I know. But as far as decorations and such, I just want each thing to have its time. I guess I am out of it today!
OK, that is my morning chat. I am going to go walk a bit and enjoy this morning, then I have much to do around here.
I hope you have a wonderful month ahead and get to enjoy September and all its beauty.
Have a super enjoyable day!
That is a huge tomato and it looks delicious. Everything has done pretty well here this year as long as you kept it watered. I really hope we get some rain this week.
ReplyDeleteIt is huge - that is a slicer!!! We are supposed to get some rain tomorrow evening into Thursday - needed. I keep things going with my 'rain water' collection.
DeleteI saw a deer eating my flowers the other day. And, I remember that she lives here and can't go to the grocery store. I smiled and said, "Enjoy".
ReplyDeleteGood way to think. I guess I shouldn't worry, as long as it isn't living here. I don't want that damage. But food wise I have plenty!
DeleteI have a flock of wild turkey birds working the garden now... digging and clawing up mulch and leaves and whatever, eating what they find. Gee whiz, they sure are Big Birds! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's chilly here in the mornings and at night. I've got my blanket on the bed already and sure am glad for it come midnight. :)
The coyotes are out. Two neighbors have lost cats, and coyote tummies is probably where they went. Happened to my black cat a couple years ago. He insisted on going out after dark, which was my mistake. I know everbody has to eat, but sure wish they'd not eat our pets.

I bet the turkeys are cool looking. I guess nature eats what it finds. Now that being said, I don't like the idea of kitties/pets being taken. Yeah, I am glad no coyotes around here.
DeleteI agree - there is plenty out there, leave the pets alone.
Cheryl, do you ever eat fried green tomatoes? That's a seasonal treat for me. I revel in the rhythm of the seasons.
ReplyDeleteOh YES!!!!!! I just love them so much! One of those garden favorites. I like tomatoes any way you want to have them!
DeleteNow that is a tomato! That groundhog Chuckie knows a good things when he smells it.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about the seasons being rushed. It's all about greed. You feel like saying, "Leave me alone and let me enjoy this moment.".
It is a beautiful day! We haven't seen as many of the contrails lately. I did see one over the weekend. This is my kind of weather. Sunny, warm, low humidity.
We emptied the greenhouse yesterday to clean it out. What a mess! The Farmer threw away lots of things and hopefully we can keep it in order, at least for a while. The garage is mostly straightened up now. I sorted his seeds and finished categorizing them. I daresay he doesn't need to buy seeds for a good long while.
This is the time of year when I think about putting away spring/summer clothes. Sure as I change things around, the weather will turn very warm again. The Farmer says we should all wear robes as in biblical times. Sure would be simpler.
Yes, enjoy the moment!
DeleteIt is just gorgeous. I noticed that last week - I haven't seen a contrail in a long time.
Good for you on cleaning the greenhouse. I have been working on the basement some and letting go of 'very old' even for me foodstuffs!
I don't have enough clothing to 'put things away'. It all just kind of lives in the same places - easy to grab no matter the weather.
Like you, I'm not a pumpkin spice girl, either, unless it's in a candle form. That tomato is HUGE! WOW! Blessed indeed! I love grape tomatoes and eat at least a handful a day. I really want to try to grow my own next summer. Glad the walks and porch-sitting bring back good memories for you. Life was alot simpler when we were younger for sure. And I also like to enjoy each season as it comes. I can't rush any holiday!
ReplyDeleteI do love the smells of fall/winter candles - just not big on those flavors in food or drink! Grape tomatoes are like candy!! Mine are now done, so I am on to regular tomatoes.
DeleteYou would enjoy growing something and then picking and eating. It sure gives you a neat feeling of just being 'able to'.
Yes, the seasons are all special - let's enjoy each one.
Yes, I saw that same commercial! What the what, ha ha. Our tomatoes have done wonderful also this year, Butch has given so many pounds away. We have lots of green tomatoes out there too. I have gotten eggs in exchange so a plus. Since I didn't grow any zukes, I was given some, so my shreds are replenished. Zucchini bread in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhat the what is right!!! I mean it was still August!!!
DeleteGlad you had a good tomato crop as well. The neighbors have sure been happy - one guy who is kind of distant most of the time - has given me a hug twice. He was so happy to get tomatoes!
Nice exchange for you. I am glad you got your shreds replenished. That will be so good this winter. The bread my neighbor made me was so good - she told me it had pineapple in it! I had no idea - but it sure was yummy. I will get that recipe from her - she said she would share.
Tell Butch to enjoy those mater sandwiches!!!!
I just wish there wasn’t such a focus on my least favorite holiday - Halloween. I don’t like it at all. As for Christmas I must admit I like to put up my tree before Thanksgiving and enjoy it until New Year’s. To me mid-November is a good time to start focusing on Christmas.
ReplyDeleteYou are fortunate that you have such idyllic memories of your childhood. Have a good day.
I remember as a child Halloween was just a fun day for getting lots of free candy and for getting to play and have fun. I look at it as a fun kiddo day and nothing more.
DeleteToday, being alone, I just don't do anything - kind of scary.
I usually decorate for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving and take stuff down around NY. By then I am ready.
I am very fortunate I had such a lovely childhood. Indeed.
What happy childhood memories. When the kids were little, we ate so many tomatoes our tongues got sore.
ReplyDeleteI do have a lot of good memories - a blessing for me.
DeleteI have been known to do the same thing years ago. I just love tomatoes.
I loved your childhood memories of the swing in summer. We loved raking fall leaves on the ground into "floor plans"...bedroom, kitchen, living room, and so on...and playing in our little ground level house! :)
ReplyDeleteMy mom made green tomato relish with the last of the tomatoes. I am sure it was good...but don't remember eating it! LOL
The only way I love pumpkin spice is in pumpkin bread or pie!!
I saw Christmas being put out at the (NOT) Dollar Tree the other day. Too early for sure!! Crammed in with the back to school, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. I say Boo!
Leaves were always fun in the fall. Yes, I remember making the little 'houses'. And big piles to jump in - such fun.
DeleteI have made green tomato relish many times - it is so good. Like the best sweet relish I have ever had.
I can do pumpkin bread (a little) - but nope on the pie. Just never developed a taste for it.
Money grubbers - that's it! Trying to get every dime they can in the name of a holiday. I remember Christmas never was out until Thanksgiving Day was over, when I was a kid. Stores celebrated each holiday separate. I say BOO too!!!
Our heat blew out last night in the wind and we were quite cool this morning. We may even get some much needed rain.
ReplyDeleteWow, that tomato is huge! I'm guessing my tomatoes are cherry tomatoes and they are coming on strong.
Hope that pesky critter moves along and leaves your garden alone.
I sympathise with your sadness regarding the Hummingbirds disappearing off each year. I am the same with the Swifts that arrive here in May and depart again for Africa in mid-August. To me they are the sound of Summer and their acrobatics are a joy to watch.
ReplyDeleteI spotted Christmas cards in a shop last week. My brain is still on Summer setting, so they stopped me in my tracks.
