Hello to all. Hope you are well. It is raining and raining some more here this morning. It is still dark out as I write this, so I will go out a little later to feed the kitties outside. Weather looks to be all over the place here, in the next few days - and that isn't on my 'favorites' list!!! If it is snowing or icing where you are - be safe.
TRUE STORY!!!Today just a few ideas and recipes to cut costs and still eat well. I know many are trying not to go into the grocery for the remainder of the year - or have plans to start the new year that way. Well, there are things that are just very tasty, that can be made with items you already have.
I was looking back to some posts from several years ago and came across these recipes again. Just as relevant now as they were then - maybe more so.
AGAIN remember: click on the recipes to enlarge for easier reading!!
SPOON BREAD
Can't get much easier. Bread comes in all types and flavors and who says it has to be a slice? This is like fry bread, and it really is good. I plan to make this again soon. POTATO/BEEF CASSEROLEYou can use any ground meat you have - you can use any kind of cream of soup. Heck you could even change out potatoes for carrots, squash, turnips, etc. Recipes are just "ideas" to me - they aren't etched in stone. Use what you have and make a hearty winter dish!
*Use up spices and herbs to change up the flavors of things. You can take the blandest ingredients and make them taste good - just add different seasonings. Also think bacon grease - you can sure add flavor to a lot of fried goods with a little bacon grease - that stuff is gold!
*Use up older fruits - even if you have a variety of pieces and kinds - to make a cobbler. Kind of like a cobbler fruit salad! You can also fry up a variety in butter (like making fried apples). Peaches, pears, apples - even a little citrus would be so good. This would be good over pancakes, waffles, pudding or even cooled and used on ice cream. No need to let things go to waste!
MINER'S STEW
Actually, a casserole, but it doesn't matter what you call it. It is super easy. Again, use whatever ground meat you have. You can use carrots or other root veggies in the mix, instead of so many potatoes. Just because things are easy, doesn't mean they aren't filling and hearty.
I think throwing a handful of cheese on top would be super yummy too!
Yesterday I was out, and I noticed that ALL Christmas items were already 50% off at Hobby Lobby! Now and immediately after the holiday is the time to buy many items for the upcoming year. Paper products - like plates and napkins - (if you use) would be a deal. Wrapping paper - get plainer rolls of paper that could be used for all occasions throughout the year. Candy - that would be the time to get some candies to chop up and use in baking or to use for melting. Candy can be frozen for use throughout the year. (cheaper than buying choc. chips)
Stock up now on all baking supplies - groceries tend to be having a lot of loss leader sales. Ham is on sale many places as well. I would think around New Years, cabbage and maybe even corned beef will be on sale. You have to pay attention to the sales and watched the in-store mark-downs. I stopped on the way home for cat litter at WM - walked around and noticed they still have frozen turkeys for .69/lb. Not as cheap as Thanksgiving, but still pretty darn cheap.
Stay warm, dry and safe today.
No matter where you are, I wish you abundant blessings.

I want to go to Hobby Lobby, I love that they start their clearance sale before the holiday. Great recipes, btw. That is a great idea to stay out of the grocery store for the rest of the year.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't been in there in ages - but I do like it better than our Michael's which is right next to it. Just better flow through the store. Good deals to be had. Other things were on sale too - I got a puzzle for a gift for 40% off.
DeleteIt isn't that long to stay out the grocery - and just use what we have.
It certainly rained hard with wind overnight. The sun peeked out and then skittered back behind a cloud just now. Ryan Hall Y'All says we are going to get single digits and snow. Waaa, don't want it!
ReplyDeleteWe priced steaks at Costco yesterday, which are usually pretty reasonable. Talk about sticker shock! We were going to split a package with Erin so she can fix a nice meal for her roommates. She said she'd fix cube steak instead. We are preparing a dish similar to the Miner's Stew for lunch, except using ground turkey.
Erin made two pumpkin rolls to take to her workers. They ate every bite. She found a recipe for a cherry roll. It looked really good.
Stay warm, you and Bits!
I have heard that about the temps and snow. YUCKO! I don't want it either. I saw someone on FB talking about prime rib on sale at Aldi 7.99/lb. - limit one. That is still too rich for my blood. I am not a big steak eater - thank goodness.
DeleteThey sure must have been tasty. Mmmm - cherry sounds delightful.
The Farmer cut some parsley, cilantro and pulled some green onions to put on our casserole. Not too bad for December 10.
DeleteSeriously? That is amazing.
DeleteGood recipies! Thanks so much. Will try spoon bread, but cut it so it doesn't make so much. I'm sure it's best fresh off the stove. :)
ReplyDeleteWent to the grocery today and bought the stuff for the littles,: Pringles, nuts, bulk chocolate covered raisins and nuts, stuffed pretzels. Now I need to hustle and get it all wrapped up so if they end up over here they won't see their presents before The Big Day. :D Some of those things were on special, which was very nice.
No, I don't buy toys, those kids have all the toys in the world already. I do put money in their college funds but they don't care about that at all yet.

Good idea on the goodies. Yes, kiddos do get a lot of stuff, so goodies are always a treat. I have younger ones that have started asking for that. They can have their own little stash for their rooms!
DeleteWe are pretty much only buying what we need for our Christmas meal until the end of the year, unless we find some really great deals. Over the weekend I made a big pot of split pea soup and cornbread. My daughter who lives down by you is supposed to come up and help us with our Christmas baking on Saturday, but the weather doesn't look so good right now.
ReplyDeleteGood idea to only buy what is needed. We all spend way too much, just because. Split pea soup sounds yummy.
DeleteRight now, according to what they predict, it doesn't look good! I keep hoping they are wrong. For your sake too, I hope she can make it up!
Hi Cheryl, Just stopping by to say hello! I've been crazy busy lately as you have probably guessed and am not online near as much as I used to be so I know I have missed things. I've been busy with life, and the past couple of months just had a nice time with the Lord packing 24 Samaritan's Operation Christmas Child boxes and oh the joy it brought! Your enchiladas look so good and I so need to do that. I made a big pot of lentils w/spaghetti and yesterday used some with collards to make a soup also with spaghetti in it. It turned out good.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are having a nice Holiday Christmas season, ~Amelia
Hi Amelia - nice of you to stop by. It is that time of the year for keeping busy. The children's boxes are such a gift of love. I like tangy things so that is what I eat often. I bet the soup was tasty. Love the creativity.
DeleteYou as well - tis the season!
I am never organised enough to buy presents far in advance but I do buy Christmas cards and wrapping paper in the sales after Christmas. It's strange to think that some shops are already having sales.
ReplyDeleteI used to get gifts way early - not so much anymore. It is kind of amazing that the sales of 50% have already started but it is just 2 weeks away. Maybe they over ordered or just don't want to store it.
DeleteI have a ton of paper that I bought last year for 1.00 a roll. Score Me!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! It has been many years since I had to buy paper. This year I bought cards for the first time in ages. I have always had plenty from past sales!
DeleteI have many a cloth bag I made for Christmas wrapping. One of these days I will have to purchase more on sale as the boys seem to take my bags home with them.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping that my last shopping trip will be just before Christmas and I will not be going in again for at least a few weeks.
God bless.
LOL - well, the boys know a good thing when they see it!
DeleteI may get a couple things when family comes in town, other than that I am good for a long while I do believe.
