Weekly Wrap-Up 6/5

Happy Sunday!  Another new week starting and another new month!  Sure is flying by.
I have been all screwy with my days this week - holidays always do that to me.  Well, to be honest, I am messed up every week!!!!  LOL!  Retirement has a way of getting days mixed up.

We started out the week VERY hot and humid.  Then we had rain and it cooled some.  It has been pretty nice the past few days.  Looks to be rainy this next week.
The blue jays and robins are still overly enjoying the bird bath.  I love watching them take their baths.  I don't see as many others bathing as I do those two.  The little birds pretty much come to drink as do the squirrels.
Going through phases with flowers.  First it was poppies, then peonies, now it is roses and soon will be lilies.
This was taken on Monday and has about 2X more flowers on it now.  Blaze climber.  It sure is beautiful
This was taken Monday as well - I hope you can see all the baby bunches of grapes.  The arbor is loaded - if they all survive - what a grape season it will be!

This past week:
  • Trimmed the bushes out back again
  • Got all the peonies dead headed - boy that was a job
  • Mowed and trimmed everything
  • Placed a soaker hose all around the garden (just in case needed)
  • Been watering with rainwater when needed
  • Used the crockpot and made a small pork tenderloin (3 meals worth)
  • Got to have the windows opened a lot
  • Did a lot of odds and ends outside
  • Planted some okra in my garden pots
  • Made a run to Fresh Thyme for herbal medicinal for me and kitties.  Good to go for quite a while now
  • Ran next door to Marshall's (my 2nd time ever) - and bought myself 3 new bras.  It has been a loooong time since I bought new ones.
  • Working on more decluttering.  36 years of accumulating takes a while to get through!
  • Got to hang throw rugs, jeans and comforter on line outside to dry
  • There was actually some very good deals at Kroger with digital coupons this week - I have resisted so far!  I may still go - but I really need nothing and I am good for a long while
Meals this past week:
Pork  tenderloin and spicey mac n cheese
Lunch at neighbors with his family (taco bar)
Pulled pork BBQ sandwich and cauliflower salad
Pork/cheese patty melt and salad
Mushroom/Swiss burger and slaw
Fried egg sandwich and balance of cauliflower salad
Chicken strips and pan seared Brussel sprouts and cherry tomatoes
SNACKS - smoothies and lots of fruit

It seems I am starting to lose a bit of that winter weight I put on!  I was surprised the other day when I got on the scale.  Fresh air, sunshine and exercise outdoors is sure helping.  I have been eating a lot of veggies and fruit - so that helps.  Very few junky things!!!!!  Lots of fluids.
This is the best weight I have been in a few years!  I am finally getting my bum more active - I feel I have just been in a stupor for the past few years (understandable).

How has your week been?  How about gardening and flowers?  Deals?  I always look forward to hearing from everyone.  I see on the 'following' list that we are growing slowly.  I know there are way more people that are here and read and post than that - but it is nice to see new people and to share new ideas.  Thanks everyone.

Blessings from my humble little home to you and yours!  May you all have a safe and healthy week ahead.
Remember to be positive, to pray, to help others and to laugh and enjoy each day.  Be thankful for all you have!

Dear Lord, We are surrounded each day by false prophets and minions of the devil.  Help us to discern good from evil, that we always surround ourselves with positive people and good deeds and love.  May we not be tricked or fooled by evil.  Help us to live in love and harmony.  Amen

  1. New bras! I had a grandma who used to say - every year a woman needs a new hairdo and a new brassiere. No one says brassiere anymore. If you say that to young girls these days, they don't know what that means.

    1. LOL - pretty good advice! You are right - they wouldn't have a clue!

    2. My sister (59) went on a job interview and they asked her if she could use a typewriter. She said yes??? The office manager said all they young women that came in did not know what a typewriter was!! So they had to ask. OMG.

    3. Isn't that just nuts? Yep, if they can't type words with just their thumbs - they don't know how!!!!! LOL
I can still type and I use a real computer every day = which is like a typewriter - no texting for me!

    4. I thought a typewriter was common knowledge because of the keyboard/computer commonality.
My friend works at a middle school and says there are analog clocks all over but kids are always asking for the time because they can't read them. They only know how to tell time digitally. There's gonna be a world of hurt if the computers crash for days. We troglodytes will rule the world, haha!!

  2. Watchful and firm, yes! Folks miss out on the bit about love, loving your neighbor.

Your rose is beautiful and look at all those baby grapes! For some reason my roses are nice and full this year. So far everything is growing very well. The Urban Farmer has a hip out of whack so I'll call the chiropractor tomorrow for an adjustment. Been there, done that.

Woohoo with your weight loss! I'm sure you have felt in a slight stupor, just not the same. The experts say to eat less and move more. So far I am falling down on both accounts...ha!

Amazon has a bunch of calendar clocks. I found one that gave the day, date, time, weather and humidity. When retired, it is no longer required to know the day. I use a calendar I made to mark the dogs' medicines on so that helps a bit.

Bras are expensive and difficult to fit! I wear the sports type that slip on for everyday use. No wires for this old gal. Miss Mona is right: no one says brassiere these days. I am reading a series of books set in the late 1800's and they had to wear all kinds of undergarments. No thank you!

Enjoy your week. Hope we get some rain.

    1. I hope the garden grows as well as the flowers and the grapes. Maybe this is going to be a great year.
Sorry for hubs - that is painful.
I keep a calendar up and the computer give me a date - I just never remember what DAY of the week it is!!!!
I got the slip over sports bras this time as well. I think I am in love. Hate underwires - took them out of my older ones!
      Have a good one!

  3. You've had another busy and productive week. I finally got to play in the dirt, and got my annual flowers and vegetables planted. I am over the moon to see that the peony, bleeding heart, and other perennials I planted last year made it through our incredibly long winter.
I'm struggling on the meal front. I'd be happy to eat grilled meat and pasta/potato/veg salad every day but my son is not. We're just starting to get decent warm weather - the a/c even kicked in yesterday and I keep the thermostat at 76F in the summer so I don't care to heat up the house cooking. Oh well, I'll figure it out and your weekly list helps add ideas. Thanks!

    1. YAY on getting to play in the dirt. Glad you got all things planted. You had a busy week too from what I read.
I am easy to please when it comes to meals - as long as I am full - it can be super simple.
I list meals - so that maybe it helps someone. Glad it does.

  4. Oh, Cheryl, your roses are beautiful! And such a healthy grape vine, too. Did I ever mention that I've planted roses everywhere we've lived? Don't quite know how I'll do that here, but I'm sure I'll find a way somewhere on our acre. Do you have any daylilies? As I recall, they grow wild in the midwest. At least they did in Ohio.

Today is my hubby's birthday. He's 62. Social Security will start in August. Your life experience--and that of so many others--makes me very grateful every day that we've made it this far. May God bless and keep him healthy. He's been working hard on getting a paved walkway from the driveway to the front steps (almost done), and we should be fully moved in by mid-month.

Lately I've been focused on everyday reasons to be grateful... I burnt toast this week and was grateful that wasn't the only bread or food in the house... had a rare period of time with my son's house to myself for a little self-hygiene-care... enjoyed sunny afternoons outside and cool evening breezes through the windows. Still looking into a/c or maybe a swamp cooler for our own house, but am grateful we're able to consider the expense at all. Many can't right now.

Thank you for being here, Cheryl, and for always being positive and encouraging with goodness and love. --Elise

    1. Thank you. I sure hope the grapes produce well.
I hope you can find some places for roses - a will a way!!!
I have tons of daylilies!!! They started from a small start from mom and dads. They are going to be blooming soon. Noticed this morning that the D'oro lilies have started blooming.
Happy birthday to your hubs!!!! Tell him not to work too hard! It is lovely to be able to live a decent life today. I know many can't or don't. Hey, it's the 5th - so mid month isn't long!
Yes, being grateful for all little things as well as big, helps us stay humble. We are truly blessed.
My pleasure to be here, and I love that I can help one or two along the way. This is a joy to me!

  5. Don't you just hate spending money on bras? Mine have to be practically in shreds before I put out money for new ones. I don't know why that is. I never put mine in the dryer, hoping they'll last forever without the dryer beating them up. LOL, they don't....

I love your Sunday posts. Well, all of your posts, but Sunday is my favorite.

    Have a good week,
    Jean

    1. Hi Jean. That is why I really needed new ones - I don't shop for stuff like that. I never put mine in the dryer either. I would be just happy to go 'without one' - but try to stay tasteful!!! LOL I am not a large busted women - so it would be OK - but I wear them any way!
Thanks - I am glad to have you here!

  6. I don't think I've ever owned a comfortable bra. They are instruments of torture that we women inflict on ourselves! Unfortunately, the "girls" aren't getting any perkier, so I have to wear one when I go out unless I can hide them under a coat. Having a small ribcage but a larger cup size, I can't get an inexpensive one that fits, so I end up buying them with the cup size too small. Expensive ones that (sort of) fit are just as uncomfortable, so I don't waste the money any longer and just buy cheap ones.

Did lots of yardwork the past couple of days. Unfortunately, I think I planted my baby tomato plants before they were ready, and they look dead. Fortunately I have 4 left plus a volunteer I found in the yard. I hope I don't have to buy nursery plants; they're very expensive this year. I lost a couple of cucumber plants, too, but had overplanted, so I'll be okay there. Picking lots of strawberries. Dug up 18 feet x 1 ft along the south side of the carport for more overflow veggies (if I don't manage to kill them all first!)

    1. Found plenty of volunteer cosmos when I weeded the back flower bed. Will be planting zinnias and marigolds with them. Transplanted a salvia and another perennial to the front flower bed. The plants are at least 10 years old and weren't getting enough light since the trees have grown up behind them. My roses (a coral-colored bush rose) are blooming. The stella d'oro lillies are getting buds. We're to get a little rain this week, but I have been watering from the water barrels.

I took over management of Husband's BP medications and supplements. He was scaring me by taking things out of the original bottles and not remembering what was what. I have a nice daily pill holder that holds nearly everything he takes (most are gummies). I ordered a new blood pressure meter since we both got very low readings on our old one. I'm wondering if he is over-medicated for his high blood pressure. That could be causing some of his balance and muscle weakness problems, even though he is not lightheaded.

Produce prices are starting to come down at Aldi. I bought 4 dozen eggs and froze 3 dozen for future baking. Made scrambled egg burritos for the freezer. Baked brownies. A 2-lb meatloaf is in the crockpot for 4 meals this week and some slices for the freezer for future sandwiches.

Husband is getting a tooth filled Monday. I'm taking the car in for her annual oil change and inspection on Wednesday. Since the Honda dealer is 3/4 of the way to the St. Vinny's thrift store, I will visit there afterwards if Husband is doing well that day. I'm always looking for kitchen items, linens, books, and bargains on clothing, etc.

Hung out all of the laundry except Husband's flannel sheets. He is always chilly, so we run the furnace once in the morning to take the chill off in the house. Haven't had to run the A/C in the evening most of the week. We are applying a tip from the Tightwad Gazette and unplugging any appliances that we aren't actually using at the time, like the microwave, WiFi, etc. The TV is always unplugged. They don't use much on standby, but every little bit helps.

    2. Bras are a pain. I am wide across- but thin through and not a very large cup (B). I just never feel comfortable. I gained weight and that made them tighter. Maybe I can keep weight off and they will fit better. If my clothes are baggy enough - I go without around here - just not out.
Sorry you lost some plants - glad you have replacements. YES they are expensive this year! Mmmmm fresh picked strawberries.

    3. Good idea on taking over the preparing of hubs meds. That can be very dangerous, if he doesn't remember.
I bet your flowers are pretty.
Glad to hear someone say they see prices going down! Yay on all the eggs, and smart to freeze some.
I hope you find some deals at the thrift store. Have safe travels.
Love hanging out laundry. I never keep small appliances plugged in. More worry about fires than anything - I just remember lots of stories about things catching fire.
That is a smart move though - we need to save in all areas. Pennies make dollars!
      Have a good one.

  7. I definitely need some new bras as well. May have to break down and order them online.

  11. Decluttering, decluttering decluttering ... It's been my focus for the past couple of weeks, since I learned our marina was having a nautical garage sale. I went through all of the bins that I had containing boating items and boxed them up for the sale, which ran from 10:00 to 1:00 on Saturday. I had to leave early, due to a meeting to complete another sale in a neighboring town. But even in the 2 hours I was selling, I walked away with more than $150 in profits, excluding the cost of gas to get there and back. I sold a lot of things I thought wouldn't move, and much of what I thought would go fast didn't. My sister may be holding a garage sale in the next couple of weeks and told me I could bring the remainder to her place and set up a table and sell there. Alternatively, I may list some items on FB Marketplace and donate other items to charity. In any case, my grocery budget is a little healthier this month!

We have GOT to get the birdbath set up! Have you seen any hummers yet?
I so enjoy reading your Bible verses and prayers. I trust your kitties are all well?

    2. YAY!!!!!! Happy you are all moved and it is done. Even a little garden planted - that is great. NO, I have yet to see a hummingbird. I keep my feeders nice and clean - nothing yet. Seems kind of late to me.
Yes, the kitties are doing fine - they hate the super hot weather - but they find cool spots.
      Have a calm week!!!!
