Weekly Wrap-Up 2/12

Happy Sunday to all.  Hope this finds you all well and safe.  Gosh, here we are at almost the halfway point of another month.  They sure are flying by.

We had some spring like weather and then a tremendous wind event.  Thursday was sooooo nasty.  The wind was horrible.  Luckily no major damage around here.  Lots of limbs down, but that was it.  We are now in a warming trend for much of the week, then another cool down to winter like weather for a couple days.  There seems to be a lot more decent days than nasty - so that is good.
I love being outside and listening to the birds - it sounds like spring!
They are singing their sweet songs.

I have company coming today.  My nephew and his wife are coming in town.  I am so excited to see them.  I am making homemade pizza and an assortment of veggies and cheese and summer sausage.

It has not been an exciting week at all on the home front.  Just a lot of this and that.

  • I did go out Tuesday to a luncheon with a lot of my high school alum.  They do this every other month - my first time going.  It was really nice and it was what I needed to lift my spirits.  Many of the people I even went to grade school with - so it went back a 'few' years!!!!!
  • Cleaned and scrubbed all the watering holes outside
  • Did a big yard pick-up of limbs and sticks.  Some trash - but most just kept on blowing down the street!
  • Cleaned out a couple more drawers
  • I did run to Kroger to get a few fresh items.  I found a bag of firm, large green tomatoes (3) for .99.  This week is going to be fried green tomatoes!!!!!!!  YUM!
  • I did try the Dove for sensitive skin on my hair this week (Elise).  I liked it.  My hair was very clean and soft. Today I did shampoo - kind of a controlled study.  I think it was much softer with the Dove.  I am wondering now about Ivory bar soap.  I have about 12 bars of that.  It was always advertised safe for babies - hmmmm.
  • Basic cleaning - the mention of company sure does keep the house dusted and vacuumed well!! LOL!
  • I did get to air the house on 2 days - very nice temperatures.
Meals this week:
Baked beans, smoked sausage and garlic toast
Deconstructed cabbage roll skillet
Out to lunch (Mexican restaurant)
Ham/cheese/ranch sandwich and tortilla chips and cheese dip
Roasted squash, Brussel sprouts, & onion over rice
Grilled ham/Swiss/roasted pepper sandwich and salad
Cheesy mashed potatoes, chicken fingers and cherry toms

So there you have it.  Not real eventful at all.  This week, I am going to start doing some projects that may make a mess - just wanted to wait until after company is over!  So many small jobs to do.
It sure seems there is always something calling our names and begging to be done!
How was your week?  Did you accomplish anything major this week?  Any great deals?
I love hearing from everyone.

I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and healthy week.
Blessings from my humble little home to you and yours.
******************************

I know I have used this before - but it is always good.  This whole chapter is wonderful!

Better to be a poor man who walks in his integrity than a man who is perverse in speech and is a fool.
It is not good for a man to be without knowledge, and he who makes haste with his feet misses his way.
Proverbs 19:1-2

Lord, help us to help others and to pass our knowledge to all who will listen.  We all need to learn and teach, to make our path sure footed in this world.  May we each appreciate ALL we have, and not to be envious of others.  Please keep us each and every one in Your loving and protective hands again this week.  Amen

  1. Couldn't sleep so got up about 3: am. and was reading some of your older posts . . . pretty interesting also. Anyway you may consider posting your blog written on - Monday, June 15, 2015 again as there may be many new and older followers that this would most likely help at these trying times. I am making a copy for my recipe book now. Thank you Cheryl.

    1. Thanks for spending your night here!!!! I will go back and look - may be something I need to do. I was still pretty new then.
      Thank you!
      Have a great week.

  2. The passage from Proverbs is one of my favorites. Learning and teaching are ongoing skills. Yes, learning is a skill.

Glad you are having some company! That is definitely motivation to get the house spiffed up.

Oh my goodness, the wind was fierce. The house behind us has enormous pine trees and limbs and needles showered down. Just more to pick up...

Ooh, I am intrigued by Miss Dru's request for the post from June 15, 2015. I love reading from blog archives..

    1. Yes mam, that wind was nuts. I could feel the house quake each major gust. Surprised the greenhouse had no damage.
I will go back and check and probably re-post.
      Have a great week!

  3. That is so sweet that your nephew and his wife are coming to visit, you are very loved I can sure see that. :) Pizza is a wonderful food to serve, our daughters made gluten free and dairy free vegan pizza this week for my mom's 93rd bday here for our little lunch. They made a big salad to go with it and I made an Italian soup (the night before I doubled up) to serve on the side, a tomato base spinach soup served with gf pasta. We are all on special diets at this point so it's very nice that everyone over here is on the same page with food. But yeah...Pizza works. Two of our daughters made almond flour deserts with stevia and apple sugar. Delicious with coffee!

The Dove soap thing intrigued me too. Thank you Elise for the suggestion. I look forward to see your study results Cheryl! : ) I have baby fine hair so it's always interesting on shampoos and such. I have to use healthier shampoos for various reasons.

I'm trying to clean out my studio, oh my gosh...Clutter is so toxic. Also pulling games out of my entrance closet so I'll have more room for blankets etc, the girls left all of their games so we need to have a talk on what stays. lol I feel like everything needs cleaning out around here!

That is so very nice you are able to visit with old friends from school. That's great, you must have attended a nice friendly school and I think that's great. A blessing for sure!

Have a sweet Sunday visiting with your family Cheryl, it's pretty cold down here in Texas, lots of wind too the past few days.

Love the scriptures and prayer, wonderful reminders. So many clutter up life with more and more...It's good to be content with what we have in Peace with the Lord. You are a good example of that.

    1. Your shared meal sounds fantastic. Happy birthday to your mom. I had stuff at moms forever - I understand.
We graduated 50 years ago this year - and some I had known 12 years longer than that! How did that happen??????
Hope you get a nicer week as well. We have some warmer weather coming in.
      Have a great week.

  4. Nothing much exciting around here either as the respiratory infection continued although my energy level picked up. I wanted to replenish the cold remedies I've used up this past week & was surprised to see depleted shelves of common products. One product I was looking for has been on back order x 6 mos, said the pharmacist. I got out for 2 walks in the mild temps & there was only one nap this past week. I've slept through the last 3 nights without coughing. The appetite didn't wane through it all! Meals this week: hot dogs, pizza on naan bread, cabbage roll casserole, PB&J on toast & the last of the bean soup. I did the neighbor's house checks, made brownies using chocolate sauce & Valentine sugar cookies. I paid attention to the royal icing this time & was very happy with how the decorated cookies turned out. I'll deliver them to my son's family today when we meet up for one of the girls' ringuette game. I did the Valentine treat delivery to the lodge staff (doughnuts from the bakery), Merci chocolates to the Home Care staff & flowers to my SIL whose birthday is on Valentines Day. Happy Heart Day to you, Cheryl.

    1. Comfort foods when sick - it all sounds about right to me. Sorry you are still feeling under the weather. Hope you get the meds you need.
How nice of you to deliver goodies to others. Thank you
Hope you have a healthier and lovely week!

  5. Hi Cheryl, here in Phoenix we are on the third day of wind, gusts to 30 mph! No damage here but it is driving the golfers mad (here for the Phoenix Open). I am about half through going through my pantry and freezer and delivering to a local food pantry. Lots of food my husband loved that I won’t eat (boneless skinless sardines for example)…it feels good to know I will help feed some folks. The pantry said they were getting low on food. I believe you when you said someday I (and Kim and Sam) will feel like cooking again, but so far I haven’t cooked a real meal in weeks. Eat out a meal, soup, crackers, haven’t lost any more weight after the first two weeks, so I am not starving ;). Thank you again for your blog, kindness and help through this difficult time. 2. Oh my I bet the golfers hate that!!! YIKES
It took me a few months to get past sandwiches, salad or soup. It didn't hurt me any. I did lose a little, but needed too at that time. It will happen. I just realized how tired I was of sandwiches and soup! It started small - but has improved over time.
I keep you gals in my prayers. I am so sorry you all have to go through this - it really sucks. Not a club anyone wants to be a part of.
Hang in there and keep plugging away. Baby steps - you are loved and cared for.
      Have a peaceful week!

  6. I was able to stop by a store in another town and found the big cartons of canned cat food I wanted. Bought 2 cartons, that's 2 months of food for Blackie. :)

There was & is a winter storm warning here, but so far all is rain rain rain with some breeze. We'll see what tonight brings. Monday is supposed to be clear and in the 50s! Weather is so variable, it's really funny to me that people expect to forecast months and years in the future.

    Be well!

I hope it doesn't get nasty on you tonight. It is that time of the year - weather changes on a dime.

  7. How fun to meet up with old classmates. I keep in touch with some of mine on FB but it seems we're scattered all over.
The sunny, warmer weather this week was very nice. I too opened up the house to air it out.
Enjoy your visit with your family and have a great Sunday!!

    1. It was nice. We had a huge graduating class (over 900). There were less than 30 there - but we have our 50th reunion this fall!
Yay, on nice weather. It sure makes my attitude and mood better.
      Have a lovely week.

  8. Like you, Cheryl, our weather was (mostly) nice this week and we were able to air out the house a couple of days. Most of the last snow has melted. More snow coming in tonight through Wednesday, though... 6-8 inches total are predicted.

We both have had that nasty cold that's going around, so meal-wise, not much to write about. We were feeling better yesterday and Hubs helped me rotate our freezer stock, moving the oldest from our chest freezer into the fridge freezer. I had 5 (2 lb.) bags of frozen, diced potatoes that are now 10 vacuum sealed packets. It was amazing to see what we've been able to stockpile in 6-7 months of sales! We have enough beef, pork, chicken, sausage, bacon, etc. to last the better part of a year, and it's all organized now by type and date. I did get the berries from Safeway, and crock pot liner bags from Dollar General, so will be able to make a good batch of crock pot jam.

Glad you liked the results from shampooing with Dove sensitive skin bar soap. As for the Ivory, it's a regular soap; Dove isn't, so it leaves no soap scum and rinses clean. I got a 6 bar pack of Dove for Christmas, which should last me most--if not all--of this year. I'm also happy you got to enjoy time with old friends and know you'll have a wonderful day today with your nephew and his wife. Those are the most important things in life: GOOD times.

Blessings to all and Happy Valentine's Day! It can be a hard day for some. Know you're in my prayers every day. --Elise

    1. Sorry you have been sick as well. Simple meals and piecing is what happens for me if not feeling well. Take care.
You have done fantastic since moving. You have accomplished so much. It sure is a comfort to have those pantries and freezers.
I didn't think Ivory was supposed to leave soap scum - maybe I am wrong. I know they always no tears for babies.
I have never been big on Valentine's Day - just another day here. But thanks!
Have a healthy and good week.

  9. Friday was my day to get some cooking done for the weekend. Got a lot done by lunchtime then time stopped. My son- in- law went to the ER and I picked up my grandson (SIL was ok and went home 5 hours later). While watching my grandson I got word that a dear friend of our family we are very close to went in for an pregnancy ultrasound & there was no heartbeat. She had been scheduled for a c- section for next Friday. Unfortunately, that's happening today. And while I was trying to process that, my husband texts me he was in a serious car accident but he was ok. It was not his fault and thankfully no one was hurt. But his car was totaled (we'd just had major work done on it anticipating we'd continue to keep it for a long time- it's 16 years old) as the force of the other car hitting him sent him airborne and over an embankment. The cat was with him and also unhurt.

One of my daughters & her husband are taking care of our friend and her family. She has a strong faith and I know she'll get through this. And today I am thankful my husband, my oldest daughter & her husband who went to the ER, my grandson & I will be enjoying Sunday dinner together.

    1. Geesh what a week! So glad that all in your family are A OK now. Poor gal, losing her baby had to be awful! Not something I can even fathom. Guess you are getting a new car now! Glad kitty is good as well.
Family - such a blessing. Keep them all close and hug them often. Have a fantastic Sunday dinner.
      Blessings for a great week.

  10. My Grandmother washed her hair with Ivory soap her entire life. Se had the most beautiful white hair and people would stop her everywhere she want and ask about what she used on her hair. She would always say that she just 'warshes' her head with Ivory soap. When I was a young adult I thought that Ivory soap would make my hair beautiful too but it was awful after washing it. Perhaps my hair needed to get used to it but I never tried it again.

    1. Glad to hear that about Grandma. I will try it - I am sure the hair has to get used to any big change. I have heard folks that use baking soda only - say the same thing. There are so many things we can do differently, it we just take a few chances.
      Have a good week!

    2. I tried baking soda one time - my hair felt like straw afterwards, and it was very hard to comb. Never tried again. Very diluted Dollar Store shampoo works well for me... squeeze a little bit in a big plastic cup of warm water and pour that on. Not nearly as greasy as I was when young! :D A bottle of shampoo will last a year or more!

    3. Same here on the shampoo. I buy White Rain and mix with water. A bottle lasts for ages. Cost probably not a penny a shampoo. I am willing to give the bar soap a try. I will try Ivory as well - if I don't like it, I can always shampoo again!

  12. How nice you were able to meet with your school chums, and even better a visit with your nephew and his wife.
I haven't been back to a school reunion in many years, and we graduated almost 46 years ago. They hold them in my home town, a 4 hour drive from here. Now that mom and dad are gone, I don't get back very often.

    1. It was a good week for visiting for sure. I had a great time with my nephew.
I live close to my neighborhood from growing up, but there are many who live all over the world. A lot do come to the reunions. They usually get a year to process a time off and a flight. It is always good fun.
I can understand not getting back often.

  14. Cheryl---one disturbing thing...on our local TV station they were interviewing a pantry that helps out struggling college students---which is an awesome thing. BUT there is one person whose job it is to inspect the donations...and check expiration dates!!! Made me sick!

    1. People just don't get it - do they? They act like the food has a brain and knows the date and magically goes bad on that date!
I just shake my head at the waste and how many would love to have that food.
I have used thigs so far past date, that many people would think I am crazy - but there was nothing wrong with it.
There used to never be dates and people survived!!!! Go figure!!!!!!
