Today: Public Service Reminders

Howdy all.  Here we are in the midst of the second week of June!  It is a beautiful morning here.  It is cooler and right now there is a lot of dew on things.  As soon as it dries, I will be out working again.  Always something to do!

Just a couple things today - as reminder or new news to some, that may be quite beneficial in someone.  Hope the info helps someone out.

Michaels is helping out now that Joannes' has closed all stores.  Fabric would have been a lot harder to find.  I know I always went to Joannes. They have bought Joanne's private label and will be increasing their fabric departments.
Of course there is Hobby Lobby as well, and some WM's carry a bit pf fabric.  Hopefully this helps those that do a lot of sewing.

ALDI
Aldi is decreasing a lot of prices again this summer.  It did this last year as well, to help folks out.  I know not all areas have Aldi (sorry), but it always pays to check them out.  They are reducing pricing on over 400 items by around 33%.  That is pretty darn good.  It says seasonal - which they sell a lot of.  Many food items come out once or twice a year for a short period of time - take advantage and stock up when you get the chance.

EGGS
How are prices in your area?  They have down a lot in my area.  Most prices I see are over $1 a dozen cheaper today.  Some are $1.50 cheaper.  Still higher than they were, but better.
There is a recall at the moment for August Egg Co. eggs.  It said they sell to a variety of stores including WM and Safeway for brown cage free eggs.  Not a company that I have heard of.

FRUIT
Many places are in the middle of strawberry season or just coming out of it.  It is the time to get them.
Also, from now until close to fall is stone fruit season!
It provides quit a variety of fruits.  Cherries to plums and peaches, even mango (which is generally shipped in).  Some areas got hit by late freezes this spring and that will affect those areas - but be on the lookout for fresh seasonal fruit.  Peach trucks are going to be starting in our area soon.  Cherries will be on sale soon.  It is just such an abundant season of goodness.  Get things cheaper while you can.

I love seasonal eating.  I truly enjoyed asparagus, while that was in season and cheap.  Right now is great for rhubarb, luckily, I have my own - it sure pairs with strawberries.
Greens and some smaller root crops are really thriving now.
So, shop season when you can.  Keep your eyes open and help the wallet!

Hope you all have a great day!!!!

  1. Cheap eggs were $4.69 yesterday. I don't know your reference point for up/down I've seen them as high as $7.19. I buy direct from a farmer so I am paying $4/dz. 6y ago it was $2/dz. Organic feed costs have gone up significantly.

Michael's here has no sewing department. I checked both stores within 20 miles.

    Happy Tuesday everyone :-)

    1. We had eggs up to close to $5.50+ a dozen. They are now at about 3.49/doz. here at the stores. I wish I had a local outlet for fresh. $4 is a good price for fresh.
Michaels is supposed to be working on expanding all their stores. Hopefully soon for you. I had always used Joannes, and if not them, then Hobby Lobby. I have never been a big Michael's fan.

  2. I'm glad you were able to get asparagus at a low price. I didn't see anything like that - $4.98 per pound, never changed. I know it was "in season" but my grocery doesn't seem to care about that.

Here, even zucchini are $2.98 per pound. Crazy. And it's not very fresh looking either, kinda withered. No wonder people here try to grow some veggies at home! ;)

We still have one actual fabric store. I don't need any more clothing, no more fabric, but I kinda wish I did. Sewing is fun, and I like pretty long skirts. :) Used to be I wore clothing out, now it seems to last for ever. Older and more careful, I guess.

    Have a lovely week!

    1. I did find asparagus at it's cheapest around here for 1.49 per pound. Still right around 2.19. I think location has a lot to do with things too. If you live rural and have only one or two places to shop, they don't have to give the deals, as you have no other options.
Also looking at sheets at thrift stores is a good way to get a lot of vintage fabric!

  3. Seasonal eating is the best. We enjoyed our first BLT and zucchini fries of the year and it was delicious. Not having one since last September makes you really appreciate them when you do. We try to eat as little grocery store produce as possible. So yes, now is the season to can, dehydrate and freeze. I did pretty well last year and hope to do the same this year.

    1. I had a BLT too - with the heirloom tomato I bought! NUM!
I used some chunked zucchini yesterday from the freezer, since it will soon be producing here.
I love the little farm markets - so many goodies to be had.

  4. I am glad to hear about the Michael's and JoAnn deal. I'm hoping they might re-open my JoAnn's here under the Michael's name. But I have been picking up fabric at estate sales. Lot of quilters around here.
I have been getting my eggs from a friend of ours, so I don't know the current egg prices.

    1. that is another great way to get fabric. Love that idea of estate and yard sales. It pays to watch for deals. Glad you have an option. I wondered about that as well - if Michaels may reopen some stores under their name.
Glad you have a fresh option for eggs - the best! Wish I did.

  5. Our egg prices did go up slightly but are back to regular prices. We did not have the same issue with the avian flu, so the only reason prices went up is our greedy grocery chains. I did the math and we pay about $3/dozen (USD). Btw, Safeway is a Canadian chain - I think there are some in the States too.
It's a little early here yet for fresh produce but things are coming along. My daughter did a video chat with me this morning, and our strawberries look like they are going to be thick with berries this year. My peas and carrots are up, and the potatoes are doing well too. I'm looking forward to being home soon so I can enjoy the gardens.

    1. Lots of Safeways in US.
That isn't a bad price - we got used to eggs being oh, so cheap - then boom!
Great of the garden growing and getting ready to produce. I hope you get bunches!

  6. Good information today! That is good news about Michael's buying Joann's fabric line. Walmart used to carry lots of fabrics but the stores I have been in have a slim selection. I passed this information along to a lady in Texas who does Little House on the Prairie costumes. Laura does buy some fabric at estate and yard sales. Her dad was part of the Ingalls family.

Our strawberries are pretty much done for a while. We have ever-bearers so they should produce fruit again. The blackberries are blooming as are the red raspberries, which have little green berries at this point.

We buy our eggs at Costco and don't really pay attention to what is in the stores. We can get two dozen cage free organic eggs for around $8.00. Actually that is cheaper for us than raising chickens. The organic feed got really expensive.

It is gorgeous out today! I had the flower beds in the backyard pretty much weed free, and I swear weeds fall along with the rain. Need to tie up the tomatoes as well. Almost all the plants have little green tomatoes on. Green beans are blooming. Enjoy your day!

    1. Found it.
The last time I was in a big WM (long ago), they didn't have much on hand.
Waterman Farm stand is still advertising berries, but it has to be about done. So wonderful to have all those goodies around.
It isn't cheap to raise chickens. Not a bad price. I see Kroger will have 18 count for 3.49 w/card this week. I will probably go and get those.
It is lovely out - been doing yard work too. Your tomatoes are way ahead of mine. I planted late.

  7. One dozen eggs at Walmart is $2.96 here right now while they are $3.29 at Aldi, so they are definitely coming down in price. I read that in the news this morning about Aldi lowering prices on over 400 items, which is wonderful news.

We are enjoying peaches right now and I have two kinds of melon I need to cut up today.

It's cool here this morning at 69 degrees after raining all night. I've already been outside and downstairs working on organizing things, as you said, there is always something to be doing.

    1. That is a good price. That is wonderful on Aldi. They did that last summer as well - I am sure that will help those with children at home all summer.
Peaches will be good her soon. I looked last week, but too hard for me. Melon is so good. I love summer, just for melons!
Don't over do it. Yep, the work never ends!

  9. Eggs in my small city are still pretty high, but I purchase the 18 packages and sometimes they go on sale. As far as stone fruit, I am really glad that we have a couple of cherry trees and I am hoping they produce very well. It will be a bit before my kiwi produces and the honeyberry (haskap) as well.
Peaches, plums and other stone fruits are very high in price here. I am hoping to find a good sale so as to can some, freeze or make some jam.

    God bless.

    1. Hopefully the prices will come down some soon.
Getting a lot of cherries would be so nice. I hope you find some deals - homemade jam is the best.

  10. Our Michael's started selling fabric before JF died. Do you have a Hobby Lobby? They sell fabric and every other week run sales on EVERY kind of fabric. Some Wally's have fabric. We have a local fabric store in town. They have EXCELLENT fabric. Really good stuff.

    1. Ours has had a small fabric section for ages. I do like Hobby Lobby best, not as crammed full of stuff. I rarely do WM - but the ones around here have very little fabric.

  11. Aldi says the reductions are on seasonal items but there are regular items reduced, too. I buy soy milk regularly and it is lower by .39 and the Aldi cranberry chicken salad was $1 lower when I bought it a week ago. I haven’t bought eggs for a month but even back then they were lower but I can’t recall the amount.

    1. Good to know. Last year it was the same way. They had a lot of regular items reduced. Good to know that some do like to offer some help. They are big enough, that they don't have to be greedy.

  12. I try as much as possible to eat seasonally. It is cheaper and better for the environment.
I used to sew a lot, but hardly ever these days. I still have a stash of fabrics and trimmings, buttons etc. Maybe I will go back to it.

    1. Seasonal is best for sure.
I just need a good outlet for items other than fabric too. Sewing supplies and fun crafty things. I really did like Joannes.

  13. When we moved into our house 30 years there were many, many fabric stores within reasonable distance. Some were small places and some were chains. I spent some happy times in those stores daydreaming of my next project. With Joanns gone I can go to Hobby Lobby but it's in an area I rarely go to that's 30-40 minutes away. Otherwise, there's nothing even close. I don't care for buying fabric online. I have done it in the past but it's probably been at least 8 years. And that was for specialty fabric not available locally (like European or Japanese fabric).

Last summer I found 3 bundles of fabric at Goodwill. They were kits for quilts. The tags said the kits retailed for $120. I paid $10 each. It's obviously quality material. I might make one of the quilts but I think I'll probably break up the bundles and use for other things we could use more than a quilt.

    1. There used to be a lot of fabric stores in my area too. LOTS! Now just Hobby Lobby and Michael's and are a little drive. It makes me sad - I guess maybe a sign of the times.
What a deal that was! You could use that material for so many fun things. ENJOY!
