Weekly Wrap Up 6/22

Hello and happy Sunday to all.  Goodness, this month is slipping by quickly.
Well summer came in our region and boy did it make an appearance!  Hot, hot, hot!  It brought the heat dome as soon as it started.  We look to be in 90's(F) all week long.  That wouldn't be so bad, but humidity came with it.  Very muggy.
Mornings aren't too bad so far.  Yesterday morning was just luscious - I went for a walk, sat on the porch and just enjoyed the breeze - then afternoon hit!  LOL
This is important to remember now that so many are in the heat.  BE CAREFUL.  Drink lots of 'good' fluids - no caffeine or sugary drinks.  Light weight clothing.  Nothing strenuous.  Please, even if you have no pets, leave water out for wildlife.  They need fluids too!!!!!

I didn't have to water this week - due to the rains we had.  I was talking with a neighbor and she said as of Friday, she hadn't turned on AC yet.  Dang!  She is older and it has to be warm, but she watching her $.  I told her not to try to be a hero!  I will be keeping in touch with her.
The robins and the bluejays love to take baths in the birdbath - especially the robins.  They are sure dirty little birds!  After 2 or 3 bathe - the water is muddy looking.  I change it often.
Had the biggest hawk I have ever seen sitting out on a wire in the alley this week.  Dang, it was huge!!  Patience it had - that thing set there for a good hour - waiting!
Heard a bunch of noise outside this morning, looked and a neighbor on the other side of alley, is having a new roof put on garage.  They were already working at 6:30AM - smart!!!

My frugal week:
  • Did tons of weeding all over, but especially in the perennial bed
  • Spent a half day with sis this week - fun time/good talks
  • Did a lot of neighbor visiting!  Had porch talks, walk talks, fence talks.  Also had a school friend call and talk for a long while.
  • Lots of storm pick-up.  Still having things fall from trees with the breezes - but all is good
  • Cut my hair
  • Made a fruit salad with things on hand
  • I mowed on Friday evening, before the huge heat hit.  I have mowed in hotter - but it was pretty darn warm.  Probably won't happen again for the next week.
  • Used air fryer a few times to avoid oven
  • Paid bills by phone
  • AC off as much as possible - used ceiling fans - AC as needed
  • NO grocery or shopping at all
  • Washed a few windows
  • Took several really good walks this week - early mornings.  It sure is refreshing.
  • Using food I have on hand and trying to get creative with food
  • Refilling containers and baskets as needed
  • Just doing all the normal stuff
Meals this past week:
Sausage/egg/cheese Mc Waffle sandwich (homemade)
Tacos
Chicken/cabbage eggrolls (air fryer) - homemade
Breaded pork burger, cauliflower/carrots steamed topped w/cheese, hard-boiled egg
Enchiladas (freezer) - heated in air fryer
Homemade calzone (air fryer) and salad
Samon (in browned butter), spicy rice and side salad
SNACKS - fruit, fruit salad, fruity milkshake, cheese sliced w/crackers

I had a surprise visit yesterday from my nephew and part of his family.  That was so nice.  We live many miles apart - so every visit is precious.
How has your week been?  Staying on the frugal track?  Finding any deals?
I sure hope you all have a means to stay cool.  I understand the southern hemisphere is now in winter, so you take care as well.  I hope all managed no damage from the storms this past week and may you all be cool and safe this week.
Blessing to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

Lord, thank You for all our many blessings and the safety of our loved ones and our friends.  Help us each one to walk that path of goodness and integrity.  May we be kind to others, non-judgmental, and helpful in every way that we can.  We are human, and we make mistakes, but we pray that You lift us up to see our misgivings and help us to be our best.  Prayers for safety and peace for all.  AMEN

  1. Definitely a heat wave! It was 90 here yesterday during yard sales, which wore me out quicker than usual.

I’m so happy you got to visit with your nephew and his family. Those are just the best visits. My niece called me last night and talked for a while, it was so good to hear from her.

Speaking of big birds, I was driving home the other day and one of the neighbors had about a dozen vultures in her yard, so I was thinking there was something they were after. (Yuck!)

You meals sound delicious. It’s been a while since I had an egg roll and that sounds so good. 😊

I hope you have a good week and stay cool and safe if you do venture out in the heat.

    1. I bet that did wear you out - heat just drains you.
Glad you got to talk to your niece. Those are nice conversations. Oh goodness, vultures are so darned ugly - yep, must of been something dead there.
Thanks - just using what I have, and trying to mix it up a bit. The egg rolls were so crunchy in the air fryer.
You stay cool as well. Have a good week.

  2. You made me think I want to get a batch of waffles made for the freezer. I like them with a bit of cream cheese and ham. I attempted egg bites last week but the Trader Joes spray was worthless and they stuck. I'm attempting again this week with different spray.

    1. I like having a batch of waffles in the freezer - you can use them in so many ways. Ham and cream cheese sounds tasty.
Good luck on the egg bites.
      Have a super week.

  3. For sure looking at heat this week, getting into the 90s. Have moved to summer window arrangements: windows open after lights out at night, everything closed up and blinds drawn by 10 AM. No AC here, so it's very old school. Ceiling fans are lovely things. :)

Worked in garden weeding while earth was still damp from the rains. Disturbed a wasp and got stung. Ouch!

Early morning is the time to be outside, but there are some no-see-'ems who like that time of day. Most annoying. DS came and mowed and the whole place looks better. It was looking really shaggy after all the rains. No rain in sight this week, and high temps so I'll be carrying jugs of water to potted plants.

Good devotional today, thank you Cheryl. You really help keeping me on the narrow path! L(

    1. I open the blinds early (for sunlight) - then yes, I close them again around 10AM. Ceiling fans are great - they sure can keep the air moving. No AC? Oh goodness, you are brave. Not sure how I would like that. Well, I know how sure I - NOT!
Sorry you got stung. Yes, the grass was looking straggly here too, so went out before the blast of heat came. I doubt it will grow much this week.
Thank you! Have a wonderful week,

  4. You're experiencing high temps after rains. In NE Alberta, it's cool temps (15-20C) & still wanting rain. There was 6mm last wk. Carrots & peas have not germinated in the garden & the rest has just popped up in the past wk. I'll be heading to farmer's markets for some of that produce. A nephew is competing in the National Junior High Rodeo finals in Iowa & they've reported the high temps. The tap repair was a fail w/ one thing & another going awry. The plumber came on Fri to remedy it all. It doesn't take long; it just takes money as per the Alan Jackson song. Enjoyed a massage & reiki session. The massage remedied the sore left knee. Enjoyed lunch out with a friend & hosted my SIL/BIL for supper last night while we listened to chuckwagon races. Grass was cut/trimmed & garden weeded. These activities tempered the worry for my son who had pneumonia. I'm glad to say he's recovering now. In the kitchen: zucchini coconut loaf; roast chicken; spicy chicken salad; carrot pineapple muffins; bbq pork chops w/ fried rice & corn salad. Have a good week, Cheryl.

    1. Yes, it seems the rains also brought the temps. I hope you get some decent rain soon.
Rodeo sounds fun! I always admired those folks. It is going to be hot in the whole mid section of the country and even moving to the east this week.
Self love sounds wonderful. Glad you took some ME time. Good to hear your son is improving.
Mmmmmm - yum. Have a great week.

  5. Excellent devotional! We need to walk that path of goodness and integrity.

Not looking forward to this coming week. You are smart to get out and do what needs to be done outdoors early in the morning. We watered early this morning. I have some deadheading to do and may go out again if it isn't stifling. This kind of reminds me of State Fair weather. It has been hot and very uncomfortable in the past. Light meals will be on the menu this week.

You had some quality family time this past week. That is worth its weight in gold.

    1. Thank you - I think so as well.
Early mornings are the time to do what we need. Evenings can be good - but I bet the skeeters will be out and about too! Funny, I haven't seen any yet.
It does seem like July or Aug. weather - hopefully it cools after this week.
      Family time is the best.
      Have a blessed week.

  6. We've gotten rain off and on now since the downpour on Thursday, and the forecast is saying more rain through the week. That's good because the young woman who will be checking the house won't need to worry about the containers.
I wonder what the hawk was waiting for?

    1. Glad you are finally getting rain.
Not sure - maybe dinner? It set up there on the wire with its back to my house (there are always birds and squirrels here). It flew off alone. The birds were all hiding here, and the squirrels were all resting and not moving! Those critters know and they sure are smart!
      Have a super week!
