Howdy Ho to all!! Holy Toledo it is cold outside. The news says it is -4*, my thermometer shows 1*. Half a dozen of one - 6 of another!!!!! LOL! Cold is cold.
Most schools are still closed here - not just snow (although many roads are still bad - ours!), but the cold. They have E learning.
It has been almost 6 days since we were above freezing and it looks like it will maybe be another week. Well, they keep telling us January is the coldest month - sure hope they right.
I so hope you are all well and warm here in the US. Stay cool in the southern hemisphere!
Sure looks cozy doesn't it? You can almost smell the goodies - love it.
Today I will share some charts of things that just about everyone should know. Food can be good and food can be bad. We need to know the things that keep us healthy, as in it gives you nutrients and vitamins needed. Things that last and things you can make yourself with no preservatives!
Color is your friend. Eat the color as much as possible. I love fruits and veggies. I do try to eat color every day - it may not be fresh goods, maybe frozen or canned, but I do try to eat color as often as possible. Here is a chart showing many popular items and what great natural vitamins you can get from them. I am big on almonds, eggs, bananas, apples and milk. Get some of those (if not all) every day!Not all the pictures match the words - but you get it! Read the words!!!
Your own homemade cake mix! You can mix dry ingredients together and keep on the shelf - then add wet when needed. Bake at times and temps of cake mixes.
I know that beans get hard to cook - but it can be done. I soak and soak, then pre-cook in baking soda water - then cook. I cook without adding salt (for some reason it seems to slow cooking time for me). I add my flavorings at the end or from the meat. Just take your time and be patient. No need to throw them away.
Do you have any tips on how you cook older beans?
You can alter by adding other ingredients to change it up a bit. No fake ingredients and things you can't pronounce.
Here is a repeat to help in a pinch.
Out of butter - no cream - use powdered milk to make a great sub for your table.
This sure may help in a pinch and keep you from making an unnecessary run to the store or maybe help those living far from a store. (click on recipe to enlarge for easy reading)Just a few tips from me to you.
Do you have any great tips that we need to know? Please share!
Have a blessed day and be safe!

Our schools never close, no matter how cold it gets because there are parents who have to work and have no alternative care available to them for younger kids. Those days it's usually a skeleton staff and a few dozen children and the teachers rotate through the classes. The children also get longer indoor recesses when it's really miserable outside.
ReplyDeleteBut I understand your area isn't as prepared for the really cold weather and it is safer to keep the children at home.
I like veg and fruit too, though my Dad was a beige eater - brown bread, butter, bologna, honey and cookies were his favorite foods. We always said he could spot a piece of celery in a casserole from a mile away and the only veg he ate was leaf lettuce (with butter) and peas. With a diet like his, I'm sure some dieticians would marvel that he lived to 98.
My biggest learning moment was that 1 TBLS of ground flax seed with three of water, stirred then sat, can be used for an egg in baking. I rarely use real eggs in baking now. It started as a support to my vegan daughter then when eggs were so expensive, a good option. Now, it's just habit plus you get the good fiber the flax seed adds. It's still bitterly cold here but school has been on I believe.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the list of foods that never expire. I use very, very little sugar (rarely bake cakes, cookies etc.) and I wondered if I should keep my very old sugar when I moved, but I did keep it. I also don’t use a lot of honey but like to keep it on hand and I’m almost out. So I’ll consider a larger jar of honey if that is the better $$ deal. Barbara M.
