Dollar Stores - My Fav!!!!!

I recently saw in the News that a bunch of Family Dollar stores will be closing.  From what I understand they are owned by Dollar Tree.  They said many would become Dollar Tree's - so you might want to keep an eye open in your area.

I love dollar stores.  Family Dollar has never been a favorite - as the ones around here are very messy and not that clean nor organized.  Just kind of junky.  I really like Dollar General and of course the Dollar Tree!!!

I mean - heck it's a dollar!  Now we must all realize that not everything there is a deal.  I can get many items on discount or sale at the grocery store for less.  Some things just aren't worth bringing home and some shouldn't be brought home.
Watch and read when buying things like toothpaste and beauty aids.  The packaging looks like brand name - but if you read it carefully - it is not the same.  Tons more chemicals added and it often comes from a foreign country.  You really DO have to beware.

That being said - I still find a lot of things well worth that dollar bill!. I buy snacks for G sometimes, candy is often a deal, I like to get cards there as well.  I love making cards - but always try to keep a bunch of ready made for all occasions here at the house.  Most are 2/$1 - that's like dirt cheap.  Cards are sooooooo expensive - and they often just get tossed in the trash.  I buy kitchen towels, peroxide & alcohol, cards, some spices or grocery items, snacks, silk florals (for cemeteries), and shampoo.  Those are my go - to items.  It just depends on the season.

I have been seeing lots of posts of FB talking about Pink Himalayan Salt at DT.  That is what we use and let me tell you that stuff is pricey.  Yes we could use regular table salt, but there is the added iodine and pink salt contains lots of natural minerals of the earth.  It is all natural and better for you.

Well I went yesterday, just to see if ours had the salt.  THEY DID!  I got 5 - 1 lb. bags @ $1 per bag.  Now I know that sounds  pricey compared to table salt - but it is worth it.

This stuff is great.  It is better for you (click on bottom pic to read about it), and it is healing.  G has sensitive teeth and had a tooth hurting for a while and he now keeps a bottle of water (w/pink salt added) in the bathroom and rinses his mouth with it everyday.  No more pain or sensitivity!  It works great for gargling with if you get a scratchy throat.  Much like regular salt water - but has minerals in it as well.
I also use pink salt in my canning instead of buying canning/kosher salt.  No iodine added - so no cloudiness in our canned goods.

I got the mail in yesterday after I came home and there was a booklet from my spice place - Spices, Etc.  I love that place and have purchased our salt from them in the past.
Well check out the price in this flier.
17.8 oz. bag is $19.95!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I paid $1 for 16 oz. bag.  HUGE difference.
It is pure salt and comes from the exact same place.  I checked the bag I still have.  Crazy.

I truly do not know how DT can sell things so cheaply.  Is it just that other places are making a fortune?  I don't think so.  Think about materials & labor, processing or manufacturing, then shipping and location to sell, etc.  - it just doesn't make since.
I will continue loving my DT as long as possible - because eventually this cheap train has to come to an end.

These are the kind of deals that make frugal shopping fun!  You might check your store for this deal as well.
ALSO keep an eye on your Family Dollar stores as many are starting the discount pricing already.  I have seen 20% - 25% off at some stores.  Popular items will go fast and you won't even get to think about getting a deeper discount for some things.

Keep your eyes open and shop smart!!!!!

  1. I love my dollar tree. The last time I was in the local one was to buy rice and beans, for $1 a 2 lb bag which is .50 cheaper than the sale price at most grocery stores. So there I am with my $4.00 in beans and rice, standing behind a woman who had 17.00 worth of mostly personal supplies, (shampoo, rinse, toothpaste, etc.) Well her debit card would not work and they ran is three times, and she kept saying I just put $35.00 in to that account today (probably over drawn so they immediately took her money but said nothing to her), I just piped up I will pay for your things, she turned and said but it is $17.00 and I replied I don't care if it is $50.00 let me see that you get what you need. and you can pay it forward. So my beans and rice which I was buying to save myself a whopping $2.00 cost me ...... Why can't I get out of debt:) I am blessed so I don't worry.

  2. I love Dollar Tree. I had gotten 2 packs of the salt about 2 months ago. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I also have found A1 there. It is so expensive elsewhere. I bought 10. Last week I bought 20 packs of seeds for 25¢ each. I have never had a problem with their seeds. I get so much lettuce from a pack. They are great for herbs too. Don't forget Dollar Tree takes coupons and is on Ibotta. I get items from them for less then a dollar all the time.

    1. Good job. I am always the last to know about these great deals - so I figured I would help someone else out. I am thrilled to find the salt. I will get more - as it doesn't go bad.

That is right - they do take coupons. I didn't buy anything worthy of a coupons, but that is wonderful to remember!
I have older seeds and they always do good too. I don't pay much attention to dates and brands. Well, you already knew that about me!!!! LOL

  3. We used the Dollar shops a few times when we were in US 18 months ago. I was initially surprised that not everything was just one dollar - but our 'pound shops' had started going the same way. I think the market on both sides of the Atlantic must have reached saturation point as we lost one of the two main Pound stores in the UK, and now it seems the same is happening in the US.

    1. We have many stores with dollar in the name. Family Dollar and Dollar General are both cheap but not everything is a dollar. Dollar Tree is however a dollar or 2/$2.
Some areas have .99 cent stores as well.

It can't keep going in the market - there is such a thing as inflation! It has surprised me that they have lasted this long.

I hope we all (both sides of the pond) can keep getting deals for a while longer!

      Have a good day

    2. What a great deal on the salt. You just never know what you will find Cheryl.
When we went to Canada last summer there $1 stores were not a $1.00. They just can't do it anymore. Inflation is bad already there.

    3. Well, it makes since. I don't see how they do such low prices. It is amazing though at what you can find.
I guess we all need to get our fix while the getting is good!

  4. We went into a dollar tree when I visited the US a few years ago and I bought some really pretty pot holders. I used some as gifts and am still using some. We have pound stores but many have closed and now we have pound stretchers. Its good for some things but not everything a pound. I've never heard of that salt. It sounds a really good deal.

    1. Many items are truly good deals. I think DT will probably increase prices one of these days soon. I have actually heard a couple reports about it.

Himalayan salt comes from areas that are very, very ancient and it is full of minerals. We have been using it for several years now.

      Have a great day!

  5. My husband and I are caretakers of a local cemetery. I have noticed that my Dollar General flowers hold up much better than the more expensive artificial flowers. I was very impressed with the quality.

    1. I have used dollar stores type flowers for years at the cemeteries and they do really well. They seem to last the season for sure. I am pleased with the quality as well.

  7. My favorite is Dollar Tree but I don't venture in As often as I should. My best find there were lingerie bags for the washer. Drawstring and 4/$1. I use them for produce bags at the market! Sturdy AND environmental! I bought 3 packs about 10 yrs ago and I'm still using the first one.

    1. That is an awesome deal. Great idea to use as produce bags. I save those bags from the .99 section at Kroger. I peel of the label and carefully open - so I can re-use.

10 years is a fantastic value for anything - but for something that cheap - WOW!
      Love it.

  8. Wow! I have a visit to Dollar Tree next week and have added the salt, lingerie bags (love that idea), ziplock bags and more I'm sure. I finally have one that is in with other stores so I can maximize my bus trip. I was there 3 weeks ago and they had Spring items out. I was desperate for some of that cheer so I bought a tablecloth and two kitchen towels - $1.00 each! They make me smile! Now I can get some of my decorations out slowly.

    1. I hope you find the items you want. It seems it is hit or miss around here. There are several Dollar Tree stores in our area and all are different to some extent.
You just never know what great deal you will find.

I love that you found some spring cheer! Pretties always help!
Love that you can journey by bus, and have several stores to visit.

  9. I am so excited about Family Dollar's closing. I know that seems so horrible. Dollar Tree won't let go of the employees but transition them over. I have a Family Dollar right down the street from me and my fingers are crossed they will change it to Dollar Tree.

There was a news article a few weeks ago about the government working with Dollar Stores to bring in healthier food. I think we will be seeing this in the future.

I do think Dollar Tree is trying to adopt a 99cent store theme to their stores. Have you ever checked out the girls 99cent store hauls? Avacodas 10lb bag for $2.00! Two dollars!!!! Wow! They get some killer deals in there.

I am a DT aficionado. I am really close friends to a lot of the employees. A lot of things DT gets are just overstock from other stores. In California they get overstock from Disney Parks. Yes, the Disney Parks! How cool is that?

I love, love, love Dollar General too. If I lived in California I think I would live at 99cent store, Dollar Tree & Daiso, lol.

    1. LOL - it sounds like Dollar Tree is your place to go! Love that you make friends with employees - that is wise to do at any store that we frequent.

Our Dollar Tree now has frozen and refrigerator items. Many are brand name - they are just smaller in size than normal. I have heard that many are now getting fresh foods as well. That would be so helpful in low income grocery desert areas.

I have never seen any seen any articles about the .99 cent stores. That would be interesting. I have seen stories about people who buy much of their weekly grocery items at DT - which is kind of cool.

  10. I had read that about the Family Dollar stores too. The writer said to be on the lookout as things will eventually go to 75% off, so we will keep an eye out for sure. Good deal on the pink salt, Cheryl.
