Weekly Wrap Up 10/8

Happy Sunday to all.  Well, one week down in this new month! Boy oh boy, time is flying by.
Happy Thanksgiving to all our Canadian friends.  Hope you enjoy the weekend and time with family and lots of good eats!!!!!

The week started fairly warm here.  Thursday, we had a slow and steady all day rain!  It was so needed.  Then it started getting chilly. Wind and more wind - it seems that has been our story around here for ages now.  Yesterday morning, deemed that I got out a sweatshirt to wear and socks and slippers!!!  Yep.  Same this morning.  Lows in the 40's.
It looks like most of the week will be very cool, with a couple warmer days at the end and more rain - then chilly again.  I do believe that fall is here!!!!!!

I actually saw a HUGE groundhog this week in the neighbor's yard behind me.  It is living under their shed.  Geesh, this after me catching so many this summer - I thought they were gone.  He must be filling up for hibernation!  The birds and the squirrels show up later each morning - the dark stays until around 7:30AM.

I can't deny anymore that it is time to pull the garden out.  I guess that will be on my agenda the next couple of days.  I will have tons of green tomatoes to pick.  I still have one tomato plants that is literally covered with blooms!!!!!  I always hate the end!  Ready - yes, but I hate it.
Out front - the sunflowers the birdies gifted me!  The one plant on the left has 20 flowers open!!!!!!  It is so beautiful.  The one by the mailbox (left) is huge! It dwarfs my hand by at least 2X.

This week was kind of slow and quiet.  I had a busy week the week before and just kind of lost my oomph!!!!  I hope to get back on track this week.
My week:
  • Sunday rested - funny how my body reacted to staying out late at the reunion and being on my feet so much.  I guess it is called 'getting older'!!!!!
  • I have done some weeding and pulling and cutting - light yard work
  • Planted my bulbs I received
  • Pulled out a few more garden plants
  • Paid all the bills I had on hand.  My light bill 'budget plan' actually dropped for the upcoming year!!!!  Not a lot - but a drop!!  I guess not using the AC a ton helped.  Still haven't turned on the heat yet!!!!
  • Picked lots of ripe tomatoes - sure have been eating a lot of them (I will miss them)
  • Sun really warmed the house nicely on our first super chilly day!
  • I ran to Kroger for a couple deals.  I got milk on special for 1.29/half.  Sugar was 1.99/4 lb. (limit 5).  I got Honeycrisp apples on special - 6 lbs. for 4.98 - so good.  Found TP on clearance 12 pack/like 48 - for 5.99 because wrapper was torn!!!!  Yeah, who cares!  2 cans of white chicken chili for .69 on clearance (nice to have just in case).
  • Stopped at an estate sale on the way home - nothing.  The lady who passed was 4 days shy of her 103rd birthday, living alone at home still.  What a gift she received!  Amazing.
  • Put my smaller quilt over the comforter for warmth.  It looks so pretty, it makes for a nice bed warmer in the winter/fall.  It worked too - last night was quite comfortable!!!!!!!
  • Mowed the front yard and trimmed.
  • Cooking from home and using what I have.  Using leftovers in new ways and stretching things.  Made some Spanish type rice and used in 2 different meals and froze some - used things from freezer (pre-made)
  • No heat or AC this week
I have read some this week, watched a few You Tube videos and just kind of rested - getting ready for a new season.  So much to do!!!!!

Meals this past week:
Burrito Supreme (homemade)
Chili (freezer) w/Fritos and cheese
Tuna patty, corn on the cob (freezer) and tom/cuke/onion salad
Veggie and thin sliced ham roll-up
Mexican bowl
Italian bread pizza (freezer)
Span. rice with added pulled pork (freezer) and beans - topped with cheese - sliced toms
snacks - crackers and cheese, apples and tomatoes
Ingredients that went in the roll-up/wrap - a variety of what I had.  Extras were eaten in a salad later that day!  Yum and using what I have!!!!!!

How was your week?  Is your garden out and done? What is on your 'fall is here' list of to-do's?
Are you getting Christmas ready?

In case you missed the post FRANCES said her hubby got to come home this week from the hospital!!!!! YAY!  Let us know how you both are when you get a chance!!!!!

I hope you all have a great week ahead.  Getting winter ready and getting your harvests in and saved.  May you all have a week of good health and safety.
Blessings to you and yours from my humble little home.

May the Lord give strength to His people!  May the Lord bless His people with peace!
Psalms 29:11

Thank You Lord for this week and for our health and safety.  Prayers sent upward for peace on this earth amongst nations and amongst all Your people. Our hopes are that all people can get along and move forward together in a positive way.  Thank You for the many blessings we have each received, whether big or small.  They are all appreciated and they are all special.  Help us through each task and problem that we may face.
Amen

  1. I finally pulled the annuals yesterday. It was definitely sad to see them go. I was looking at photos from last year and we had snow in early November. I'm hoping we get a reprieve this year, at least until after we move.

    1. It is just always so sad for summer to end in my book. Things will start looking blah soon. I hope you have good weather for the move.
      Have a great week.

  2. Your roll-up fixin's look fresh and healthy. No frost here yet but
I've brought in the tender plants that will be inside for the winter; we have a couple orange trees, rosemary, geraniums and three tomato plants that I grew from suckers that are young and have fruit starting.
Winds have blown the maples bare but the poplars and birches are now making a show in contrast to the evergreens. We have begun to use the woodstove again in the mornings.
Covid has dashed our Thanksgiving dinner plans but better safe than sorry.
My fall garden is looking fine with cabbages, broccoli, chard and kale, collards, etc. Dug most turnips and still carrots and beets growing. Lovely crop of potatoes stowed...and apples.
I have a short list for my monthly shop which is coming up this week. Your Kroger deals were good; our dairy prices are higher here. Enjoy the fresh autumn air!

    1. The roll-up was very tasty. Lots of veggies!!! No frost here yet - but it will happen soon. I still have begonias flowering and the geraniums are starting to bloom again. They will stay out till the frost gets them.
Still lots of leaves of the trees - but some are falling.
Well darn, sorry your plans got messed up for the holiday. Maybe you can reschedule. I hope so.
Sounds fall garden sounds wonderful. Those things last so well in the cold.
Be healthy and have a good week!!!!

  3. We had a frost warning for this morning, but so far it's not that cold right here. My houseplants were all back indoors, though I'm sure they don't appreciate it - they loved being outside and two of my snakeplants bloomed heavily! :)

Leaves are coming down all over, which means I must find my rake and start fussing with them before it gets out of hand. So often I find I've waited way late and then I deal with a mountain of leaves that I cannot easily move at all. Once I get them into the open my son will mow them down to mulch.

I'll pull my annual flowers out of their pots after they've frozen. As long as they look pretty I'll enjoy them.

Cheryl, your prayer for peace is for sure needed now with the nightmare going on in Israel and Gaza. :( All those poor people, and for sure most of them would rather be just living their lives, going to work, cooking dinner, doing their normal things. It's very discouraging to see The Holy Land being a hotbed of hatred and violence.

    1. Yikes - frost warning. I almost expect Mon. night we may - as they are predicting temps to get to about 39.F. I am leaving my annuals out too - as long as pretty they stay!
Leaves are a pain to rake when there is a lot of them. Been there!!! I put them on the garden.
Yes mam, it is all so sad. No person needs to go through what those people are going through. Just heartbreaking. I don't care what people's politics are - there are innocent people being killed. Dreadful.
      Have a lovely week.

  4. Love your positive blog, bible quote and prayer! I’m with you that sadly gardens are done. Ours is here in Northern VT. The garden gifts are tomatoes and squash on the counter, peppers and apples in the fridge. Two beautiful sunflower bouquets grace the island and table, and brought one to my yoga instructor. The rest are left for the turkeys and bees. Speaking of unwanted wildlife, we have 2 skunks and 2 porcupines on site. Friday evening my husband and I sat on the porch and watched the small porky climb a tree across the field and eat apples. My lab hates going out on a collar and leash but those critters are ones she should not make friends with! Mary

It is always sad when the garden party is over. Our fresh 'grow'ceries are ending from our yards. The sunflowers are gorgeous - I just love those happy flowers. I am truly surprised the squirrels haven't gotten mine!
YIKES - don't want either of those critters around. It seems once in a while I get a distant scent of skunk - but no, no on porcupines. Not nice critters!
      Have a wonderful week.

  5. Sounds like a lovely week Cheryl. I'm going out in a bit and cutting the basil and thyme. I'm still getting tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. We've enjoyed so much this year. Now on to soups and stews with the start of the cooler weather.

      Have a great week.

  6. Fall is definitely here in NE Alberta. The other morning it was -5C. I've been lighting a fire in the woodstove each evening. The 4+ cords of wood that were bucked up this spring have been hauled to the wood piles with the help of my neighbors. Lots of stacking to do. There will be one more batch of salsa to make when the tomatoes ripen & with that, processing garden produce will come to an end. The renter has taken his cows home so the water owl needs to be disconnected. Then it's put the yard to bed - empty rain barrels, put yard decor away, etc. Thanks for the Thanksgiving greetings. No turkey dinner for me. I got to spend this w/e at a ringuette tournament with my oldest granddaughter. I keep thinking I can smell stinky feet then I remember that I'm sharing a room with a hockey bag that's airing out!

  7. It seems you had a very GOOD week, Cheryl. Love those volunteer sunflowers! Thank you (as always) for the verse and prayer. Your meals sound tasty and how nice to have mild weather. I hope next years' grow-cery beds produce just as much for you.

So glad to hear Frances' news that her husband is home and in time for her Birthday. Prayers continue. It's been a rough time.

With clearance for the walking boot, I've been on my feet a little at a time. The largest incisions are nearly healed up. In the kitchen this week, then, I was able to prep one meal for Hubs to cook that we had for 2 days; yesterday I got a package of mild Italian sausage divided up and vacuum sealed in portions, as well as 1/2 the ground beef Hubs browned up. With help today I'll do some freezer rotation to get more meat thawed, cooked, and repackaged for the fridge freezer. Hubs calls it "that sucky bag thing". LOL! There were a few good deals for groceries this week, mainly produce.

Anyway, it's a start. The doc says it takes 3 months for the bones to fully heal, so... 1st of December? I've been exceptionally tired. The pain, though, is mostly gone, returning only when I'm walking in the boot. Two thumbs up! It's good to read about everyone's final garden harvests and what you're all doing with it. --Elise

  8. Cheryl, Lovely prayer and verse. I too am just heart sick over the mid East situation.
Good week for stock up sales this week, another 5 off 35 mailing coupons and a friend of the family gave us theirs so 3 sets and it works out good for us.
Sausage was on sale at that store so one coupon stocked us up on sausage.
Making hot pepper jelly and it seems we are eating it almost as fast as we eat it LOL.
I lit my wood burning stove last evening, I just could not get warm.
Firewood delivered on Thursday. Still needs stacked but it will be done in bits of time. The days of me doing it in a couple days are over. I am no longer 35 and need to remember that.
    Have a great week all,
    JC
My garden is still producing peppers but that is all.
Leaves are coming down, another job but I will hire the largest part of that done. I have learned my limits on leaf removal

So happy to hear Frances' Husband is home.
We are having one more day of hot weather today then tomorrow it's going to start raining(fingers crossed) for about a week. I'm sorry some of you are feeling sad about taking down the garden. Me: I'm just so over it, LOL It has been so hot here and I don't enjoy gardening in the heat.

It is such a sad situation for all involved in the middle East. I am glad the Capt. made that discission - it sounds like a sound one. No one that doesn't have to be, should be inn that area right now. I hope they realize their safety is more important than the trip. Maybe he can guide them somewhere else.
I am glad you will be getting rain. We had very hot temps for us this year, I just miss walking out and picking fresh food. I know how you hate the hot.
Have a blessed week my friend!

  10. Hi Cheryl, just checking in at the end of a nice week. Temps were up into the 100’s again but I think this is the end of them…mornings however are lovely, lows about 70. I walk the dog at sunrise and it is wonderful. My new neighborhood has a lake and a bunch of us dog folks walk around the lake at sunrise every day, a nice community to find ;). Home renovation continues, last week bathroom work. This week I get new windows and sliding glass door. This condo has mostly had part time occupants (snowbirds) the past twenty years, so maintenance was spotty, so lots of catch up things to do. At least I know things are now fixed and should work for the next twenty (although I don’t know if I will be living here at 87, but who knows, the woman next door is 88!). I am jealous of your tomato plants, I will, have them next season for sure! Have a good week, Hilogene in Az

  11. So glad to hear Frances' husband is home and also that Elise is doing well. We have been home from our bus trip for a week and trying to get caught up on rest. Friday and Saturday my daughters and I finally had our garage sale that was put off twice. It was cloudy, windy, and cold - the high was 51° but the wind was very cold. There was rain early Friday morning, but fortunately that stopped before the sale started. And despite the weather, we had a lot of people both days, and it went well. I helped get things set up on Thursday and was there from 9-3 on Friday with one daughter. The other daughter came around 3:00 and took over for me. I was chilled to the bone. I got home and put on two pairs of socks and a flannel shirt over my t-shirt, and later my jammies and warm fuzzy robe and covered up with a blanket. I probably should have taken a hot shower, but I was too darn tired. The daughter who had the sale at her house was out from 9-5 on Friday said, too, that she could just not get warm. Saturday the girls took care of the sale and I didn't go until it was time to pack up the leftovers. At least the sun was out Saturday and it wasn't quite so windy! The bus trip was wonderful. Every morning we started with a hymn and prayer. We particularly enjoyed seeing Samaritan's Purse. What a wonderful organization! We also saw Noah's Ark and Creation Museum, Titanic museum (really good), Billy Graham Library, went to Gospel Quartet Convention. One of the best parts was we got to see a niece and her husband in Charlotte, NC, who we seldom get to see. We were gone 8 nights/9 days and in a different hotel pretty much every night except for one two-night stay. Suffice to say, we are not as young as we used to be, so it took the starch out of us. We were both so glad to be home in our own bed!

    1. Nice, that you finally got to have the garage sale. I hope you sold most of the items and didn't have much to pack up.
Cold nasty weather is not fun for a sale. When you chilled to the bone, it takes forever to warm up. Hope you don't end up with a cold or something.
Glad to hear you had a good trip. SO many neat places you got to visit and see. That is wonderful that you got to visit with your niece.
Oh a different bed every night - no thanks. It would take the starch out of me as well. Nothing better than your own warm, cozy bed.
Glad you had safe travels. Rest up. Have a great week.

  12. I was in Walmart the other day and they had their Christmas stuff out, aisle after aisle of it. It’s too early for that. We still have Halloween to get through. I’m loving this cooler weather as I sit here under a blanket all toasty warm.

Your neighbor’s groundhog sounds huge! Maybe you all can catch hi. To and get rid of him? The sunflowers are beautiful. You need to have some fried green tomatoes soon. My dad would wrap his in newspaper and have them until February some years.

  14. Hi Cheryl, it's been a trying week thinking of our Missy and what happened. Our vets sent the sweetest sympathy card with individual signatures, (personal messages) from both vets too. They sent a beautiful poem about Heaven and our pets, how our pets are still with us, and then they put a paw print and even a precious nose print of our little Missy Christmas. I was so touched.

I've been busy too with hubs 70th little party yesterday, just our kids and his mom, my mom didn't feel like coming. I'm not a "party person" but it was a nice time, just a bit of bad timing with Missy and then Muffie is starting to go up and down. I'm very tired today.

I have thank God been doing a bit more Christmas shopping. Went ahead and picked up cute hot wheel garage, car wash, city parking sets for three grand boys to go with pants outfits. Little grand tot girl will get a toddler barn, animal and peoples set to go with her little clothes set. So I'm pretty much done. Picked up some red, green and white tissue, bag o' bows and tags at wally today. It was fun, just looking. I did decorate outside with little scarecrows and metal pumpkins paired with fake fall flowers from dollar tree. Velvet pumpkins on table with pinecones etc. Everything is pumpkins and scarecrows. Put fall garden banner-flags out too.

So very happy to have read about Frances and her husband. Thank God for that!

Beautiful prayer, Cheryl. Yes, we must pray hard at this time in our world. You have been busy and that is good, just take time to rest. I totally understand how you feel, I've never been a high energy person so I get that.

I'm wearing a long sleeve tshirt for a change and that feels nice.

If anyone has lost a pet at the vet's office, may I suggest Dr. Sarah Hoggan DVM on youtube, she's a lovely person who explains the grief and the feelings. She works at an emergency hospital for pets and is so understanding, and even speaks of her own grief. She has done two talks on the subject. Wonderful lady, she soooo gets things.

It is so hard as our animals age. I lost 3 in a matter of months between fall and early this year. They had been with me for years. It is heart breaking.

  16. Husband is in bed, so I have a few minutes. A week ago (Oct 1), he woke up with his heart in (previously undiagnosed) A-fib. His blood pressure fell dangerously low, and he collapsed on the bathroom floor. He went to the hospital by ambulance and was admitted to an intermediate cardiac care unit where he stayed until Thursday. They ultimately changed his meds, eliminating some of the BP meds and changing to a blood thinner specifically for people with Afib.
He came home with a catheter, which I have learned how to deal with. After a terrifying episode of Hospital Delirium, he has generally been cognizant and aware. He is very weak, though getting a little stronger each day. He is getting services from a visiting nurse and will start in-home physical therapy tomorrow to build up his strength and stamina. We plan to resume the outpatient neuro-physical and neuro-speech therapy (from his stroke in June) as soon as he is able.
We are incredibly grateful for all the prayers and little kindnesses that have blessed us. My birthday was Friday, and my neighbors (two brothers) brought me bakery brownies to celebrate. They also came over to sit with Husband while I picked up his prescriptions the day we came home. It truly is the little things that matter.
I am coping as well as I can, keeping expectations low. Trying not to lose any more weight, I am consciously eating. I've resumed walking around the block a couple of times a day (3 laps is 15 minutes) while he watches for me out the window. Sleep, however, is another matter, with his needs or my anxiety waking me in the wee hours. I do try to rest during the day when I can grab a few minutes. I'm certain anyone who is or has been a caregiver understands.
Know that I have been reading the blog & comments every day. Even it I don't comment, I have prayed for those of you in need or suffering losses and celebrated the successful surgeries and recoveries. You are all in my daily prayers.

    2. At my grandparent's old house--the one my mom grew up in--there was a little store on the corner with a glass candy counter that sold penny candy. Grandpa would give us kids each a nickel to go get candy... looking back now I think it was to get a few minutes' peace and quiet!

  18. Good morning All. Brrr, it's cold here and last night we fired up the pellet stove. Fall is here and my part of Pa. It's been a very busy week for us. Prior to hub's surgery we did a big shop for fresh veggies. I use the Green bags and boxes and they keep fresh veggies and fruit good for a couple of weeks, Baked some cookies and got ahead cooking meals and freezing them. We still have carrots, chard, a few peppers and butternut squash in the garden. I'm putting off doing garden cleanup until after the sutures are removed, which will be on the 20th.
While hubs watched football this weekend I finished up my halloween cards and started the Thanksgiving cards.

Cheryl, I made the peanut and candy corn mix. It's so good. Thanks for the idea. Now I'm going to have to stock up on candy corn (lol). Cookie

    1. Very chilly here this morning too. Glad you are stocked up and things are going good. I pulled my tomatoes yesterday - not sure when the plants will get pulled. I like leaving them in for as long as possible so that all their energy & nitrogen goes back into the soil.
      Sounds like a nice weekend.
I am glad you like the mix - it is just so good! Don't they make Christmas colored candy corn too? Something to have on hand for sure.
      Have a lovely week.

    2. Candy Nation sells Christmas Candy Corn that tastes just like Halloween Candy Corn. https://www.candynation.com/christmas-candy-corn

      So does Half Nuts. https://www.halfnuts.net/products/christmas-reindeer-corn

The Brach's Christmas Candy Corn is flavored like candy canes, which might not go so well with peanuts. Keep that in mind if you see it in stores. Zachary's candies (in dollar and discount stores) has Christmas colored candy corn, but reviews are poor. Hope that helps! --Elise
