Kitchen Saving - Part 2

This is something that will be ongoing for a while - as there are just so many ways to save in the kitchen.  I will also interject ideas for cleaning and laundry and health & beauty along the way.  Different ways to save around the house.  There is just no end to the ideas.
Those who are just starting on this journey, will be amazed at all the simple ways to save a little here and there.  Again, it may not be overwhelming for each idea, but it all adds up.
Today a few more unconventional ideas for using food items in a different way!

Biscuit bowls!  A great way to add your sausage gravy to a breakfast meal or any meal.  Fill with gravy, maybe some creamed veggies, meat topped with gravy, thick and creamy potato or broccoli soup - oh goodness, there are tons of ideas for using the biscuits bowls.
How do you make?  As you prepare your biscuits - whether homemade or canned - lightly grease the BACKSIDE of a muffin pan - form your dough over the back.  Once baked, remove, and you have nice little bowls!
How fun is that???

Let's talk STALE bread!
Now I am not talking moldy bread, but stale.  Just because it is stale doesn't mean you throw it out!  So many uses.
Croutons, bread crumbs, cubes for dressing/stuffing
Toast and use under gravy or sauce - make great open face sandwiches
Grilled cheese
French toast
Bread pudding
Toast and use as mini pizzas - add toppings and place under broiler for a few
Any kind of 'salad' sandwich (chicken, tuna, etc.) - toast and add filling
Make Crustables for the kiddos.  Use a cutter to cut circles - fill with PB&J (or whatever you want) add second form - crimp edges and toast in oven or toaster oven or even on a griddle  (keep edges for making crumbs)
Garlic toast
Cinnamon/sugar toast - yummy treat
Toad in a hole - cut hole in bread slice, place in pan, add egg to hole and fry, grill the piece removed as well
So many uses!!!!!!  Absolutely no reason to throw away.  All it takes it getting a little creative.  Food is money!
*****************

Yesterday we talked about not needing meat every meal (some do I guess), or how to use less and to use cheaper cuts.  ALSO don't throw away bones and scraps (like fat).  This makes excellent bone broth.  You can also throw in some scraps from veggies (carrot tops, wilted veggies, limp lettuce, trimmings, you name it).  The veggies just add to the flavor.  Cover with water and simmer long and slow.  Drain and either freeze or can.  Great FREE broth to use is soups and sauces.  You can also roast the bones if you wish until dry - crack and then make your broth - that allows all the nutritious marrow to absorb into broth.  You can do this with any type of bones.
*****************

Here is a simple chart to use all those leftovers to make soup. No, you don't have to follow it precisely - wing it!  Have fun with it.  This is just a general guide on a great way to make a budget stretching meal (or meals) for your family using what is hanging around.  No waste.

Here is a simple recipe chart for creating a casserole from leftovers and what you have on hand.  Pantry items, freezers items, leftovers, just use it and get creative.
****(click on picture to enlarge for easier reading)

These are just guides to give you an idea of what you can do.  There is no right or wrong way to create soup or casseroles or to use leftovers for that reason!

Have a bunch of veggies left from a meal - either use for another meal or mix together and top some rice for a lunch or even breakfast - add a little soy sauce or spicey siracha or whatever you have.  Just use things up.  You can make easy fried rice - veggies, rice, throw in an egg, maybe meat, seasonings and you have a great meal.  Make a tasty lo mein with veggies, meat and cooked spaghetti noodles (yep, that is what I use) - toss with your flavorings - super easy.
Stir fry - veggies, meat (if you want), seasonings and top rice or pasta.
Mix leftover veggies with some sour cream, Italian dressing or whatever you like and warm, then top a baked potato!  That is a meal!!!

As you can see, there is no end to what you can do with leftovers and there is no need to waste.
Food is money - money that doesn't need to be spent AGAIN.  Money that could be used on something else.  Being wasteful is just so wrong in so many ways to me.
Be a good steward of what you have - ALWAYS.

I hope these guides & posts help someone just starting this frugal adventure.  I think they can help us all - as we all get complacent at times and just forget!
You don't have to eat badly when you are trying to save money.  Quite the contrary - you can have wonderful and wholesome meals.  You just need to get creative and USE IT ALL!
These are wonderful ideas for everyone - not just those needing to save.

Stay warm and cozy.  It looks like we have a couple more icky days coming up this weekend and then we head into a warming trend for a bit here!  YAY!!!!
Have a great and creative day!
SMILE!

** On Sunday wrap up I will list all the re-uses and using bits and pieces from this week, that I have done!

  1. There is usually a pot of soup in the fridge made from what needs to be used up. Last week - a pot of turkey rice soup. Carrots, celery & onions are pantry staples & form the base of most soups I make. There was some leftover hummus; it was added before it went bad. Very tasty. The 1/2 loaf of garlic bread leftover from a company lasagna was used for pizza. When my young cousin was living with me, I threw $20 in the garbage can in front of her. Her eyes got big. I reminded her that was what we're doing if we throw food away. Of course, I retrieved the $20.

Exactly - just throwing money away. They wouldn't just throw money out a window - so why throw it away in the trash. Food is expensive.

  2. Good morning. I'm enjoying these use it up posts. I needed new ideas.
I hope you have been staying warm with your cold weather there. We have just been having rain and more rain but that's okay as it's snowing in the mountains.

    1. Good morning. Glad to know that you may be getting some new ideas. I think we all get so comfortable in life, we forget a lot of little tricks.
It is a tiny bit warmer today - but snow comes overnight and temps plunge again. Next week should be good.
Your rain will surely help with the drought situation. I know you love snow - hope you get some!

  3. Great tips, Cheryl. I'm also enjoying these posts very much. There's just so much you can do to use up every little bit and scrap of food. Remember that 80% lean ground beef for $1.97 lb.? I'll be using 1/4 loaf of stale bread today to do meatloaf and meatballs! Speaking of, muffin tins are great for individual meatloaves when you're cooking for only one or two. They bake faster, too, saving energy.

Mona, I love what you did with your young cousin. YES. Yes, indeed.

I shared a lot of things yesterday, so I'll shift to a quick update: the top teeth were drilled and filled yesterday, but as I'd expected, one became an abscess that will need a root canal. I was got a referral to an oral surgeon, but they don't take our plan. Hubs will call around to try to find someone closer that Flagstaff or Phoenix (each a few hours away). I need another dental appointment ASAP for the bottom tooth/teeth to be filled before that abscesses. I was awake and aware the whole time. The knock out pill didn't knock me out until I got home. Typical. I take good care of my teeth so this is all very strange. --Elise

    1. OT Prayer Request [feel free to skip].
Things have gotten very bad with my mom. Sis called early today. Mom's got a terrible cough, is incoherent, falling constantly and has started to have alarming behaviors. They have a doctor appt. today at 2 pm (central time zone). BIL wanted to take her to the ER last night, but Mom is getting hard to control. I'll thank anyone inclined to pray in advance.

With so much happening right now, I might be less active here. Don't worry. I know God is with me, He has this, and it'll be okay. Maybe not exactly how I'd want it to be, but He knows best. ((((Group Hug)))) --Elise

    11. Thank you all so much for prayer! It means more than I can express. Amelia, I understand. Boy, do I. To update: my mom has Covid + a UTI. Sis had hoped they'd hospitalize her, but she's back home with Sis and they have meds to give her. Hubs and I will be ready to head to AR if/when needed, but will play it by ear.

For me, there's a lot of dental work ahead. My jaw bone has deteriorated, which is what's causing this. The cavities start at the root. I'll get the one tooth pulled ASAP, rather than root canal/crown. There's another tooth about to abscess. It takes priority over the other 3 that are there. Good thing my SS kicks in next month.

Amelia, please have your mom checked for UTI. Maybe see if they'll just let you get a urine sample from her to drop off and test? My mom's doctor says that's probably underlying her incoherence, falling and behavior. UTIs effect the very elderly differently. Praying for you all, too. --Elise

    14. Hi Elise, Oh I so hear your heart. I'm so sorry what you are going through with your jaw, that must be so troubling. I will pray. Our youngest daughter has had tooth troubles and she has no idea what caused it. There is a formula by Dr. Christopher called 'Bone and Tissue' formula. Also there are UTI test strips etc. that we can buy ourselves too to test. So that is good news indeed.

I sure hope you get to feeling well and I look forward to a good report on your mom, ((((((((hugs)))))))) (praying hands) ~Amelia

    19. Thank you so much. They seemed to be very nice at hospital and doctor on call in ER saw things our way, seemed to be very careful about rushing into surgery, lots of factors involved. The orthopedic doctor was supposed to call and did not. A nurse told our daughter this evening a surgery was scheduled, that two doctors could decide! : O My mom is not even in her right mind at this time. We will have to be at that hospital first thing to see what is up. I reiterate that the orthopedic doctor was supposed to call hubs and did not. Just unbelievable. It was a nice day, and I was praising God. I was able to feed and laugh with my mom, and then this other strange news is very unsettling, I'm feeling weak-kneed at this point. Hugs back to you, I could sure use those with those prayers. Hopefully things are not what they appear to be. God help us, I appreciate you. ~Amelia

  4. I like the idea of those biscuit bowls. My hubby would love them. I am doing better using up what I have and not wasting as much as I used to do. I have also started doing online grocery shopping. The pickers, so far, have been great and I don't have any impulse buys that way either-plus they use their own digital coupons and when I pick up they will take any paper coupons I have. Easy peasy. xo Diana

  5. I don't usually have stale bread to deal with but when I do I toast it if needed and then whirl it in the food processor for crumbs and stash it in the freezer. I keep my fresh bread in the fridge after having it out on the counter for a day or two. I know they say that dries it out but I toast the bread for sandwiches so that's never a problem.

I'm more likely to have stale crackers or chips. I crush those with a rolling pin and save them in a bag either in the pantry or freezer.

Cute story. Last fall I made a dish in the oven that called for a bread crumb topping but since I only had crushed crackers I used that. Apparently, my husband liked it because when I was making the same dish a month later he asked me to make it with that same topping because he thought it was really good! Lol. I did tell him it was just crushed crackers.

Very good thoughts here! I appreciate you sharing your casserole too, that is awesome to have on file, Cheryl!

I just popped some soup along with the brown rice in the freezer, so that will be a good little meal when I'm tired on certain days.

It's so true, why in the world, do people waste food? It seems like a sin to me, said like the sheriff talking about the ladies probably bringing cakes and cookies to Boo Radley with his shy ways... in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. My dad and uncle were both drama people, my uncle majored in it, my dad was in plays in college, including his monk tights being so short he hopped up some stairs in a play lol the director was furious! So I guess I am a bit of a drama buff too. ; ) Sometimes I have to write my tone so people don't think I'm being just mean about something.

Thank you for all suggestions and prayers for my mom. We are seeking the Lord for direction. D Mannose is good for UTIs btw for anyone who has trouble with them. Thank you for all of your care and prayers. It's a hard time for me that is for sure but I know God will come through in some way, in His way. In the meantime I'm a bit nerved up, I'm not super woman. I've got some anxiety with this kind of thing. With discernment comes a delicate composition too. I think of others who are going through similar, I think of the ladies who visited their moms at the nursing home I volunteered at, and they survived. I saw the angst of family members putting their dear daddy in the nursing home, worry just poured out, I tried hard then to comfort those NY Italian gals but I don't think they bought it, I've always thought of them and their sweet daddy though.

God be with us all! Thank you ahead of time for prayers! I appreciate the blog here and your very informative and helpful entries, Cheryl along with your warm hearted support and comraderie. A Gift. (capital G) : ) ~Amelia

  12. Just a reminder that anything you can buy in individual portions can be bought MUCH cheaper in larger amounts. If you typically grab a mini bag of chips when packing lunches, next time buy a big bag of chips and bag them up yourself. Better yet, have the person who eats the chips bag 'em up. This applies to pre-cut veggies, pudding and gelatin cups, etc. ANYTHING!

    1. Oh what a mess. Hospitals and doctors - I despise them. No one talks to the other and communication can be awful. You have to stand your ground and be firm about things. She is not in the best place to be making decisions herself.
I surely hope this all works out well for all. God's will be done - He is in control.
Try to get some rest when possible and continued prayers.

  20. I have learned the hard way that hospital communication usually involves a lot of "hurry up and wait" on the part of the patient and their family and it is even worse on weekends. I've also found that various departments (ER, orthopedics, etc.) do not necessarily communicate with each other. Given your mother's dementia, I agree with you about not rushing into surgery. Specialists tend to see only the part of the situation that pertains to their specialty, so of course the orthopedist is seeing her as a broken hip to be replaced. They need to know that your mother is incapable of giving informed consent to the surgery and that whoever holds her healthcare power of attorney will need to be the one giving consent.
Try to get some rest and take care of yourself. I'm still praying. God will see to it that everything turns out according to His will. ((Hugs))

I was going to suggest a uti. I was told when elders in nursing homes are diagnosed with dementia, it is often a uti.
We hate throwing out food. But, things get lost or we forget. Not often, but enough times for us to vow to be more careful.
Some days, I tell Tommy I am going to freeze something like the rest of the meatloaf for a time when we need a meal after going to doctor and coming in late. It never fails that neither of us feels like even thinking about preparing food. So, the meatloaf or whatever really makes a difference in our like. We can find leftover vegetables in the refrigerator on those days or a salad or open a can of green beans.
