My Frugal Home

Hello all my lovely friends.  Hope you are all well and safe today.  A bit cooler this morning at 75*, but going back to 90's.  We had rain showers a couple times yesterday - some really nice rain.  Looks like chances of rain each day for the next few!  NICE.  It cooled about ten degrees right after the rain yesterday - which was a nice perk.  It was nice to not have to water things.  I even opened the back door for a bit!
If you have been here very long, you know I am a very frugal person.  Many years ago, it started as a needed thing, now it is just a way of life - a lifestyle.  If you do things long enough, it becomes a habit and a way of everyday living.

I do lots of things to stretch items - I water down most everything.  Soaps - especially.  Many, many years ago I heard a stylist 'to the stars' talk about how damaging soap can be on hair.  They said never use it full strength, no matter the brand.  Well, I have watered it down since - and I find it gives suds even better.  I do the same with dish soap, foaming hand soap (make my own) and body wash.  I have bars of soap as well - they don't go bad, so I always have many on hand.  I use way less on laundry soap as well - remember it isn't the suds that clean, just the water, motions and a little detergent!
Shoot, I even add water to fruit juices, and they taste just as good.
I make my own iced tea, drink lots of water, and have a Soda Stream (bought @ yard sale for $15) to make sparkling water.

I do not pay full price for much - if anything.  I buy clothes (very seldom) at thrift stores, yard sales and on clearance.  Undies cost a ton today - I buy around back to school time, much cheaper on sale.

I try to figure out ways to use what I have on hand, if I need a new 'thing'.  I know when sales happen and try to stock up at those times.  I buy clearance A LOT at the grocery.  It is still good stuff.
I have been talking about buying a new couch and maybe a new chair for several years!  Yep - it will happen when I see just what I want at the right price.  For now, mine works fine.  Patience!!!

I keep things off or turned down/up as needed.  No excess lights, use rainwater and dehumidifier water for things, AC or heat higher/lower than many, shop my pantry and just try to be a good steward.

Lately, I have been going to the store very little.  I have a very good deep pantry, and I need to use it.  Having a pantry isn't a good thing if you don't use it.  Yes, we want to be prepared for emergencies always!!!  But use those items, then replace as needed.  You don't want your food to go bad and be unusable!
Lately the kitchen here, has been creative!  I have been eating a little lighter, using up odd things I have on hand and now that the garden is growing - I will have fresh produce for the summer and fall.  I don't have tons - but I will have tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and onions - basics for me.  I also have basil, mint and lemon balm growing.  I trade with others as well.  Yummy summer goods!

I look forward to making this again soon and fried green tomatoes!  They call this a breakfast pie - for me it will be dinner.  It is so yummy.  Super easy, cheap and tasty. (I use less sugar)
Dinners can be as simple as this!  I do this often in the summer - it is cool and somewhat light, and it fills me up.  Dinner is what you want to eat!!!!!  NO RULES
Stir fry veggies purchased on clearance a while back with rice, will be a dinner in the next couple days.  I mean you can't get too much cheaper!  I will add soy sauce or some oriental seasoning and have a meatless dinner.  I often have meatless dinners.  I know many can't do that, as their hubbies want their meat - but just use less.  Make it a side, not a main thing!

I have used a ton of items from the fridge freezer, and now I am bringing things up from the upright.  I will always be on the outlook for deals - and will add them back in when I find them, but for now I am using what I have.
I have a lot of fruit in the crisper, and I am trying to use that up and be a little creative.  Fruit salads are always yummy, make a crisp or pie, grilling or sautéing fruit is yummy, adding to sweet breads or muffins or pancakes, add to ice cream or puddings, make freezer pops - there is always a fun way to use things up.

Living a thrifty life and having a frugal home is just normal for me.  I am not rich, but I can live how I want for the most part - and that is what I do.  I take care of my pennies and dollars, and they take care of me.  I live a very good and satisfying life - I don't feel I am missing out.
It just takes a little creative thinking and working with what you have.  You too, can have a frugal home and enjoy the good life.
**(Being frugal everyday allows you to splurge once in a while when you choose and not feel guilty!!!)

Have a great and thrifty weekend.  Stay cool and hydrated.
Have a beautiful day!!!!!!

  1. I love it when the rain cools it down a little bit, which is doesn't always do, but is nice when it does. I think watering down the soap makes it suds better too. When I shampoo my hair I apply more water after the initial scrubbing and it always produces way more suds with the additional water. Yes, undies cost a lot these days as do the good socks! I was a little bit shocked at the cost when I replaced mine last winter. Your dinner plate of cheese, crackers, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives and radishes looks so good, I love a dinner like that. You are a very frugal person, Cheryl. This is such a great blog post and very much needed these days!

    1. Of course the cool down doesn't last - but it is nice while we get it!
I agree - soap just really suds better with more water. I make a 1/3 bottle shampoo to 2/3 water - shake and let it set a day or so to melt together and it is good to go. It sure makes a regular bottle last a lot longer.
Undies and socks are very expensive. I tend to get socks as gifts, but undies I buy.
I love simple meals like that too. Easy, light and filling. Can't beat that!
Thank you so much Belinda - those are kind words indeed!

  2. You got more rain that we got here on the west side. It thundered and grumbled at bit but that was all. We were out early this morning watering, especially the pots. The Farmer helped me trim the Miss Kim lilac in the front and cut out the trees whose leaves look like redbud trees. I don't know where they come from but they are plentiful. I finally cut the dead out of the hydrangeas and one of them has really grown.

Always dilute soaps of any kind. More bang for your buck. You're right, they lather better. Outstanding find on the frozen mixed veg! You can't grow stuff that cheap.

The Farmer had his first jalapeno and said it was actually hot. We are still using last year's bounty from the freezer.

Enjoy your weekend. I am looking forward to the Sabbath!

    1. Yep, it rained a good steady rain around 1PM and then again around 4PM. It was sure appreciated.
I go out early too and try to do a bit of this and that. You are smart to get out there before the heat of the day. I just came in from the garage doing some stuff.
Nope, you can't grow things that cheap. I have several bags of those, that I found - just couldn't walk past that!
YAY! I have picked a sweet banana pepper, and it was tasty.
      Always!

  3. I made granola again a couple of days ago for pennies. Buying it in the store is a crazy price and it is so simple to make. Many don't know how lucky they are to be able to get great discounts. Here we don't have that many as things usually get bought no matter the price. I bought some cherries (ours aren't ready yet) on sale saving $4.00 a pound. That actually made them the price that I used to be able to get them. I can usually stretch a pound of ground beef into 2 or three meals for the two of us. We had spaghetti and meat sauce one night, then I made baked spaghetti to use up the leftovers and we had another 2 meals each with some leftover for our lunches another day.
Soup and stir fries are another way I manage to stretch meat as both of those actually take little meat.

    God bless.

    1. Good going on the granola and it tastes better too!
So many ways to stretch the food budget, if we just think about it. I love baked spaghetti with leftover spaghetti.
Cherries are 'on sale' here for about 2.99/lb. I still think that is too pricey. Haven't bought any yet.
Ground beef can be stretched int many things. It is so versatile. Great ideas - thanks.

  4. I absolutely love finding groceries on discount! It’s often how I determine what I will eat. I never buy juice, nope if I’m gonna have sugar I want it to be a treat like chocolate!

    1. I love discounts too! I have a good pantry on hand, so that helps me decide - but those bargains are generally what fill it.
LOL - chocolate is a treat. I like it, but not as much as fruit (for me).

    2. Fruit yes! Juice never!

    3. I don't get sugary drinks - ever. I buy 100% fruit juice - nothing added. I do get the crave for orange juice!
I eat a lot of fruit too.

  5. I made ice cream using maraschino cherries and am saving the liquid they came in to make cherry soda in my soda stream!

    1. Oh yummy! Both sounds very yummy. I use whatever I have on hand for flavoring Soda Stream water - it is usually fruity.

  6. When I was 7 or 8, I asked my mother why she put water in the bottle of Prell shampoo. She said it foamed better. I never forgot that. Of course, she was trying to stretch the use of Prell.
One night, I fed my very young children a plate of 'ingredients' like pecans, apple dices, raisins, carrot sticks, diced chicken, and such. They did not like how I was going to combine these items even though, singly they like everything. So, they had piles of food on their plates. The secretary of their school came by and laughed at their dinner. Sometimes, I still eat like that...sometimes.

    1. Smart mommy!
That all sounds good to me. I guess some people, even kiddos, look at presentation. It sounds like a very healthy dinner to me. I eat like that often too - especially in the summer.

  7. I splurged this week by travelling to London to stay with my best friend from schooldays. We took bottled tap water with us everywhere, as it was very hot and one day we took a picnic and went to Kew Gardens - bliss! We paid for a couple of attractions, but being a local she was able to take me to a lot of free places, off the tourist trail. The highlight was just being able to spend time together and enjoy a good giggle. That is priceless.
