Hello all. Happy June! It is now meteorological summer here in the northern hemisphere! Hard to believe it is winter in the southern hemisphere! I always have a hard time wrapping my head around that one. It is chilly this morning at 47*. I sure did not want to get out of bed this morning - it felt so cozy.
The big old sun ball is out - but it sure is hazy looking! Yesterday was a sunny day, yet it was hazy, everything looked hazy, and it smelled too. It is coming from the fires up north in Canada. I was sitting on the porch yesterday, and just looking at the trees that were a couple blocks away looked as if it were foggy.
It is supposed to get pretty warm for a couple days this week, then back to normal. All good.
My frugal week:- I mentioned earlier that I needed to make little cages around my garden plants. That seems to have worked. I had the wire in the shed already. I also put 3 pinwheels out there that I had. Not only are they kind of pretty, but they move, which seems to keep critters away
- Mowed and trimmed everything again - free exercise
- Did manage to get a few more peonies cut for inside, also cut roses and clematis flowers (I love fresh flowers)
- My neighbor brought me over a BIG helping of her corn pudding (YUM)
- Made a batch of biscuits
- Deep cleaning kitchen - and moved some things around for easier use in the summer. Got the G. Foreman handy to use for summer
- Made up bottles of shampoo and dish soap
- Made a dozen cookies from dough I had in freezer
- Used leftovers in new ways. I had some baked beans left - so I blended them until smooth w/salsa and taco seasoning for refried beans (tasty). Used rice and beans (and refried) to make enchiladas. Ate 2 enchiladas and froze 2 for later
- Cooked up some sausage to use and then made several sausage patties (fried) and then froze
- Ever weeding - it doesn't end
- Went to get gas for the month for Blazer and filled the gas can, needed to use my points. Good for the summer on mower gas now. Paid 2.49/gal. after my discount
- Finally cut up the watermelon I bought last week
- I did run in Kroger while getting gas (same parking lot). I got 3 heirloom tomatoes in a .99/bag, a bag of shredded cabbage (slaw mix) for .50 on manager deal and a big container of seasoning on clearance (that is it)
- Meals from home and cooking from scratch and using what I have
- No heat or AC - aired house a lot
- Filling containers and pulling out stock from deep pantry (shop at home)
Meals this past week:
Beans & rice, corn pudding and biscuit
Baked beans, corn on cob, burger (no bun)
Enchiladas
Sausage gravy and biscuits
Mashed potatoes with leftover saus. gravy, fried corn with peppers
Loaded cheeseburger and fresh veggies
Chef salad
Nothing exciting here this week. Just a calm, cooler week. We did get some rain a couple days, which was nice - it was a nice soft rain. Did porch sitting when I could. I think I am back on schedule now, after the holiday.
How was your week? Did you do anything exciting last weekend? Get any deals?
I wish you all a great start to June, may you all be safe and healthy.
Check in and say hello!
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

"Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day."
Matthew 6:34
Dear Lord, again we thank You for all our blessings and gifts received. Please help us each one to live for the day and to not worry about what "might" be. Help us to be prepared for whatever comes our way but keep our minds happy and free of worry. Let those that stress about the what ifs know they are worrying a good day away. Help us each to stay healthy and happy. May we all make our todays great days. Amen
Good morning, Cheryl. June 1 - let summer begin. It did arrive with a bang with temps >30C on a few days this past week. The veg garden is planted; the bedding plants are in; the perennial garden has been divested of its quackgrass. I need more flowers so may make another trip to a greenhouse today. The air was heavy with smoke a few days ago; bothersome but not as bad as being threatened by fire causing evacuation from one's home. Whole communities have been evacuated in some places & some infrastructure has been lost. These fires are happening in heavily wooded areas of the province complicated by dry, windy conditions. The World Professional Chuckwagon Association began its summer tour this past week; I spend my evenings listening to the races on the radio broadcasts & cheering on friends who compete. Items for donation to fundraising garage sales were packed up. Enjoyed a lunch with 2 friends. In the kitchen: fried rice w/ ginger beef; yogurt flavored with canned blueberries my cousin gifted me; liver & onions; roasted yam; chicken thighs & salad. Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteGlad you have all things planted! Weeds and grasses never seem to stop. Oh yes, the smoke is much better than having the fires. I feel so sorry for those in the paths.
DeleteSounds like a good week to me. The Chuckwagon races sound interesting.
Fried rice is on my menu today!
Have a lovely week!
Excellent devotional! We are not to be anxious, but to trust in the Father.
ReplyDeleteIt is a touch chilly this morning but will be good weather for working outdoors. The rains we had this past week were perfect, nice and gentle. With the rain, came more weeds. You had peonies left! Ours are gone and need to be deadheaded but they were beautiful while they lasted. The fig tree is growing like crazy. Looking forward to fresh figs. Strawberries are really starting to produce. I need to check the beds this morning and pull some turnips. The Farmer got the peppers planted and some are already blooming. Tomatoes are blooming.
We had a Korean barbeque chicken salad one day for lunch, and the next day a sirloin salad. We used Gordon Ramsay's marinade recipe and it was delicious.
My oldest daughter will be 53 on the 5th. They have been in Italy for a few weeks.
Enjoy this beautiful day!
It was a chilly morn, but it is pretty. I did have a few peonies left - they are done now. I get everyone I can. The rains were perfect. Fresh strawberries - yum. I have a few little blooms as well.
DeleteHappy birthday to your daughter! Sounds like a trip of a lifetime. I have family over there now as well.
Have a wonderful week.
Wise words from Matthew. "Don't cross your bridges until you come to them," as my Grandma used to say.
ReplyDeleteWe have had a mixture of sunshine and showers this week. The showers were very welcome, after such a dry Spring. I managed to potter around the garden doing a bit of dead-heading etc and also just enjoying it.
My bad back suddenly decided to behave, which is very good news! I can only think that something was trapped and that trying to be a little more active once it calmed down a bit freed it up.
I hope you have a lovely June.
Glad you had decent weather and could get some things done. So happy that your back decided to behave!!! Hope that continues.
DeleteThank you have a great month as well. Have a good week!
No good deals, but I didn't go out much.
ReplyDeleteWe had a birthday potluck for my Grandma, she turned 82. We go big on food and everyone brings containers and makes leftover trays with what's left. We had dinner, breakfast, lunch and dinner the next day and still have some left.
I forced myself (extreme social anxiety, it's very difficult to do anything out of normal) to take the kids to sign up for the summer reading program. They had inflatables and face painting and the kids enjoyed it. I also took them to the park to get them out of the house. Schools out for summer and when they are together they are not quiet and my husband works from home with a lot of phone calls so I have to try and minimize the noise.
Found some books at the free little library. Got a pack of diapers on clearance for a niece's upcoming baby shower.
Did a lot of cleaning outside and got into something again so my fingers and a little of a hand have been covered in painful and itchy blisters for a few days. Driving me crazy.
We have a small above ground pool with a leak. Last year we would have to refill a lot on days we would use it, but water here is ridiculously expensive. It was cleaned and scrubbed and I searched all over and found a couple of tiny little pinprick holes. Hopefully that is all there is and patching them will take care of it.
Sounds like a nice family event for grandma. It is always nice to have those goodies to eat for a few days.
DeleteNice that you got out and let the kiddos enjoy. It would be hard to keep them quiet at home.
Nothing fun about getting into poison. It is miserable. I sure hope it clears up quickly.
Hope the pool is an easy fix. The children would sure love it.
Have a super week.
Had a lovely visit and lunch with an older couple who cannot get out much any longer. Still sharp as a tack, but feeble in body.
ReplyDeleteMaryB
I bet your visit was special for them. That was so nice for all of you. Those are the things that make life special.
DeleteHave a blessed week.
The smoke has pretty much dissipated from my corner, but the wind has come up and now dust is flying around. You had a lovely frugal week. I need to get out and pick lilacs and perhaps some of the columbine flowers.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
So happy to hear the smoke is moving out. Nothing like a vase of fresh flowers. Such simple joys.
DeleteHave a lovely week.
We are just starting winter here, and I have spent the past week raking up the leaves from the deciduous trees in the front of my house. They are near a path and if I don't rake then the path gets very slippery. Great exercise! but thankfully in another week or so the trees will be bare again.
ReplyDeleteI am going on a vacation in July so I am saving what I can for it, and eating very frugally from the freezer and cupboard, and just buying the absolute necessities. It has actually shown me that I can be more mindful about my spending in the future.
It is so hard to wrap our heads around it being winter in places. That is the time of the year I dread. Yes, all that yard work is sure free exercise and it is always needed!
DeleteIt is amazing how frugal we can be when saving for something. I like that everyone puts themselves to the test at times. July will be here in no time!
Have a super week.
What is your dish soap recipe, if you don't mind.
ReplyDeleteNo recipe. I just water down everything I use. The shampoo and dish soap are just regular appropriate soaps - 1/3 bottle to 2/3 bottle water. Shake and let it set overnight to meld together.
DeleteI also use WAY less laundry soap than called for and at the end of the bottle - I can get a few extra loads by adding water. Concentrated OJ - I always add an extra can or more of water. Just something I have always done.
I make my own foaming hand soap as well. I have a 'foamer' from years ago - add about 1/3 bottle soap and then water to fill - it makes great foaming soap. I often use body wash to make it.
Hope that helps.
Have a great week.
Excellent to read that the wire worked!
ReplyDeleteThanks - darned little buggers!!
DeleteHave a good week.
I love that it is summertime now after a chilly winter and rainy spring. There is always so much weeding to do here too. Things are growing like crazy with all the rain. The baked bean experiment sounds delicious! Baked beans are just so good.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of winter - and do love the pretty weather. Rain and heat come with that.
DeleteI figured I would try it with the beans and it was really good.
Have a super week.
I would sure like to see some of that rain, especially in the north of our province. The fires continue to grow and another community has been placed under an emergency evacuation order. It is an are where I lived as a young woman and my heart aches for those in the path of the fire.
ReplyDeleteYour refried beans sound interesting. Glad to hear that the wire cages are keeping the critters at bay. As for the weeds...they certainly keep us busy outdoors. ;)
Those fires are so sad and horrible. I feel so bad for everyone in their path. That is one of those downfalls of summer, that and hurricanes in the south.
DeleteYes, my garden is now growing! Those weeds never stop growing.
Have a great week.
Well thank you for reminding me it's time to start buying watermelon!
ReplyDeleteOne of my summer favorites - always so refreshing!
DeleteHave a lovely week.
Your week sounds great- great savings. We went to a farm store and they wanted $12.00 for a watermelon. We passed it up and are going to Meijers today to see what they have. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice week. I paid 3.99 for mine on sale. $12 is a lot, and probably wouldn't taste any better!
DeleteHave a good week.
