Weekly Wrap Up 6/29

Happy Sunday all.  Hope this finds you well and safe.  Well, here we are on the last Sunday of the month yet AGAIN!  We are halfway through the year - just absolutely amazing!  Momma was sure right, time seems to go much faster the older you get!
We have had 8 straight days of 90* or over - we'll see what today brings.  It does feel a little nicer this morning - only in the low 70's and not quite as humid.
Friday late afternoon, there was a big, windy weather system that flew threw.  Crazy winds, pouring rain and it lasted about 15 minutes.  Blew stuff over, more limbs down, raining sideways and then temps dropped about 20 degrees for a short while - then boom the humidity was back.
Yesterday a couple sprinkles, then about dinner time we got a nice downpour to water everything!  Just quick rains, but they do water stuff.
I saw the duck again yesterday morning in the drive, then it walked on down the sidewalk.  Later in the day, it was in the neighbors out back (alley).  It must be a pet to someone.
My frugal week:
  • Used rain barrels a lot at the first of the week - they have pretty much refilled
  • I moved a bigger birdbath from out back.  It is metal and set in the sun - never used (just too hot).  I moved it to the shade area and the birds are using it now.  They sure love the birdbaths - drinking and bathing and swimming!!!
  • Changed the filter on the air/furnace exchanger - had one here
  • Had to report for jury duty (got to see the new court and jail!)
  • Did go out early and late to weed some
  • Laundry and used up dehumidifier water
  • Paid bills on phone and mailed 2
  • Pickerd 3 banana peppers and one tomato - there are bunches of zucchinis growing out there
Yep, that is my tomato!!!!!!!!!!  LOL!  A cherry tomato, about the size of a quarter - but it tasted good!
  • I did go out for my month end gas fill-up.  Needed to use my discount before it expired.  Saved .40/gal.
  • Stopped at Kroger (same lot as gas station).  Wanted more peaches.  I found a couple deals, 1 1/2 lb. pork roasts and OJ on clearance.  Spent very little.
Each little pork roast will give me a few meals - cheap eating!
  • Went out on day and cleaned the bottom of mower.  I usually do each time - but last couple times it was hot, so neglected it.  Ton of grass stuck underneath.  Did it in the garage so as to stay out of sun.
  • Stupidly, I did mow and trim on Friday!!  I say stupidly because first round of mowing (around 11AM) and trimming caused BAD heat exhaustion!  Yep, I had all the symptoms - so do as I say not as I do!!!  I even scared myself.   Finished it later in the day, under cloudy skies, just before the rain hit.
  • Defrosted and cooked up 4 big chicken legs.  Used 2 for dinner, and the others for snacks.
  • Did another limb pick-up after brief storm
  • Made hummy nectar
  • Just doing the normal stuff - cooking from home and using what I have on hand, cleaning, etc.
Meals this past week:
Leftover rice and some fresh veggies & apple & peanut butter
Tuna/egg salad with crackers
Open face sloppy Joe and slaw (home canned)
Big salad and grilled cheese
Teriyaki stir fry veggies over rice
Ham & cheese sandwich and side salad
Chicken legs (air fryer) and slaw & milk shake (used end of 'light' ice cream)

There you have it - nothing exciting.  Well, showing up for jury duty was a little exciting, so glad I was recused.  Heat exhaustion was not exciting, but a nasty experience, to say the least.  I am old enough to know better!  Geesh
How was your week?  Did you do anything exciting?  Get any bargains?  I have done very little shopping this month - but managed to get a couple good deals.  How are the gardens coming along?
I hope you are doing well.  Love to see you all check in.  Let us know what is going on in your neck of the woods!

Be safe and stay cool and healthy this week.  Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever.
Psalms 118:1

Good Morning God!

You are ushering in another day
Untouched and freshly new
So here I come to ask You, God,
If You'll renew me, too,
Forgive the many errors
That I made yesterday
And let me try again, dear God,
To walk closer in Thy way.....
But, Father, I am well aware
I can't make it on my own
So take my hand and hold it tight
For I can't walk alone.

  1. Good morning, Cheryl. Please heed your own warnings; no more heat exhaustion, please. The temps in NE Alberta have been relatively cool & finally the rain came. There was >1.5 in this past week. The garden should pop after this moisture & with the forecasted hotter temps. The family interred mom's ashes yesterday so the week was spent preparing for company & zhuzhing the family cemetery plots. This lead to a disussion with my son about where he wants to be buried - maternal or paternal family cemetery? He has recovered from pneumonia but now one of his girls has tonsillitis. I enjoyed an early morning walk with friends & spotted the wild lady slipper orchids. In the kitchen: quesidilla; deli sandwich w/ chicken, onion, roasted red pepper; tuna bake; zucchini coconut loaf; bbq burgers w/ quinoa & caesar salad; hashbrown & corned beef fry. Have a good week.

    1. Yes mam, I learned a valuable lesson for sure. I felt horrible.
Glad you finally got some rain and cooler temps. What a blessing. Those are discussions we all need to have for sure. I have my spot all bought and paid for - actually our first big purchase after getting married!
Wow, orchids growing out in nature! Your meals sound perfect to me.
      Have a great week.

  2. We have had the same weather as you Cheryl, I tried to be prudent in my comings and goings outside. So many things I would like to have done but can't take the oppressive heat/humidity.
I did pick green beans 4 times, I waited until after 6PM to do so and I tried to be as careful as possible.
I have canned 7 quarts, although 1 didn't seal. I will continue to pick, clean and freeze until I get enough for another canner load.
Laundry done early and hung out to dry. Hot enough to dry in no time at all.

My yard needs mown but not going to worry about it (rural) it will get done when it gets done.
Egg salad, honey garlic chicken thighs, salads and cold plates. Somedays it is a smoothie late morning and corn tortilla chips with cowboy caviar in afternoon. When it is hot my appetite is non-existent.
I did reset a large rack in a guestroom for storage of home-canned goods. Will be covered with long drapes and hopefully look like a "wardrobe". I store food everywhere LOL but I would like to have it accessible to family.
Ordered a large amount of sure-jell for jam/jelly making. When received I will make strawberry jam and that will clear the freezer a bit. I have a lot of strawberries in the freezer for that purpose.
Watching the mark-down racks pays off.

    1. Yum on the fresh green beans. YOU were very smart to have waited until evening to go out. Canning is hot work.
Yeah, I shouldn't have worried about it either - I am just a little OCD about it. Leaned a lesson.
That is a good idea on using the guest bath room. Being the 'guest' bath it shouldn't have any humidity.
I need to make some cowboy caviar soon - I like that stuff.
Sounds like busy days at your house.
      Have a super week.

  3. I like those quick rains where everything gets watered.

Saving 40 cents per gallon on gas is good. I’d make sure not to miss out on that either.

Your first cherry tomato sure looks delicious.

Good deal on those pork roasts, you probably get four or more meals out of one. That certainly lowers your cost per meal.

Oh no, on the heat exhaustion! This weather is so dangerous. Please be safe out there!

Jury duty sounds exciting, but glad you were recused.

    1. I do like those fast rains - it is just enough. Kroger points sure do pay off on the gas purchases. A break is always appreciated.
Exactly on the little roasts - super deal for meals. If I chose, I can rinse them off and add my own flavors.
I learned a valuable lesson - not going to do that in the heat again.
      Have a wonderful week.

  4. Alas, weeding is so tricky. It's easy to pull the wrong thing - I think I tangled with Poison Ivy. Did not see it, but now I have the little itchy blisters. Yuk.

Sorry you got Heat Exhaustion, Cheryl. Easy to do, if you're like me - "oh, must just finish this part, oh, and that piece over there, and here's another spot... " and then WHAMMO, collapse. That's the main reason I'm shy of power tools, I might cut myself to pieces by accident by overdoing things.

The pole beans are climbing. :) Another squash seed sprouted, that makes two and that is good as they can fertilize each other's blooms.
My grocery had cherries on special, so I bought some, OMGoodness they are so yummy. :) That's a once-a-year treat usually. Free-stone Peaches will be in soon - by mid-July! That will mean a trip to the Farmer's market.

    Stay cool and safe, y'all!

    1. I am finally healing from my poison ivy - sorry you got it. Hot and itchy is not pleasant.
Yep, that is exactly how I am - "just a little more". I was actually lucky - it was really borderline going to far.
Yay on the beans. I haven't bought any cherries yet - I do love them. They are just so pricey! I need to splurge a little.
My peaches were free stone - bummer. But they are still good.
      Have a blessed week.

  5. This week my hubby was on a "bucket list" vacation with his buddy of 61 years, so that left me "queen" of our castle. Lol. I was able to finish my first Christmas gift for our younger son, a crochet blanket. I was in charge of weeding and making sure our vegetable garden was cared for. Dinner was taco salad for three nights and then egg scramble the others. I will be happy to have him back today. Have a blessed week.

Good for you on the blanket. Simple meals are right up my alley. Sounds good.
      Hope they have safe travels.
      Have a lovely week.

  6. That's a great deal on the orange juice. My husband and kids could go through a couple of jugs a week, but it's gotten so expensive we don't buy it too much.

I got most of the holes patched up in the pool so we've been enjoying that in the evenings. It's been nice with as miserable hot as it's been. I also had their jump house up with water in it a couple of days (bought on huge clearance last year).

The kids have had free fun at the library and splash pad. Been doing the free weekly food pick up for them. Found them some books and games at a free little library. The little one has been placed on a break from speech therapy because he's not been making any progress, maybe even going backwards. The therapist is hoping the break will get him out of the routine and be less complacent and be better for him when we start back (a year and a half so far of weekly sessions). Hopefully it will help and that's less gas I'll be using every week.

I went to Ollie's for the 15% off store promotion and grabbed a few things.

I have some elderly relatives moving away to live with their daughter and they have been giving away a lot of things. I got for free a winter coat for the husband, some clothes and boots for the oldest and me, a keyboard, an air fryer, a couple of plates, a kitchen hutch, and a sun umbrella. I also bought from them a solid wood dining table. I'm currently using a cheap junky pressboard table that's at least 40 years old that squeaks every time it is touched and has broken chairs. So I'm excited for that and being solid wood, it's heavy and will hopefully last a very long time.

My garden is doing pretty well right now, but is in desperate need of weeding. Had a small tree come down in the wind so I have to get that taken care of too.

    1. The OJ was organic and no sugar -yes a great deal. It is almost $7 a gallon here. I get on clearance or buy the frozen concentrate.
Glad you have the pool - that would be great in the heat. Kids know how to have fun. One day, your little one will be talking up a storm - it will happen.
I saw that promo at Ollies - I didn't get there.
Oh you got some great items. Free is always nice. Woohoo on the air fryer. Nice to have the new to you table. They made things well back in the day.
Glad you garden is doing well. Weeds never seem to stop!
      Have a super week.

  7. Cutting the grass in high heat is dangerous and I’m glad you are OK. I used to do it (1/4 acre) all the time (Florida summers) until three years ago when I was very sick I hired someone and even though I could go back to doing it myself, I’m happy to pay someone. My friends used to always say they worried about me and it really was not easy. We will not get a break in the heat until mid-October.

This week I mostly decluttered. In a pack of greeting cards I found a card from my late mom to me that made me cry because it was so loving. I thanked God for letting me find the card which I now treasure.

    1. Thanks. I have cut in the heat many, many times - this was just a bit too extreme I guess. I tend to push it, and need to realize I am not a kid any more! Oh, that is a long time for high heat. We will cool a bit, though summer does hang on until Oct.
That is so neat you found that card. Those days are just supposed to happen in my opinion. Like a little hug from mom. Maybe stick it in a frame!
      Have a wonderful week.

We're down to two full days of our east coast vacation. We've had lovely weather, though today we had a bit of rain. It held off until we were on our way back to our hotel from the Fortress Louisburg.
We fly home on Wednesday, it will be a long day of travel. But for now, we've got more adventures to enjoy.

  10. Hi Cheryl, I am so glad to hear you are okay after the heat exhaustion, and it is a cautionary tale for next time for sure. I had it once on a motorcycle trip we were on, my husband and I sat in a convenience store and cooled off and each drank a gallon of water ;). It is very dangerous. I kept saying I wasn’t thirsty and he said, I don’t care, drink it anyway ;). He was right, you can get confused and not understand the danger. So I am glad you are okay! All good here in Phoenix, I took an online zoom class on St. Francis that was quite good. Otherwise, ate at home all meals but one! Take care, Hilogene in Az.

Take care and have a great week.

  11. Hi Cheryl. Next time you need to mow, before you start make sure your blade is tightened. If the grass is damp and clumpy, it just makes the mower work harder. Have a good week. Stay well.

  12. Excellent devotional! We need that steadfast love!

Yay for picking three peppers! Those little tomatoes are so good It seems that once the produce starts, it pays to check daily for new goodies.

You got some good buys at the store. I keep reading that Kroger will be closing some stores. Don't know if that is a recycled story or not.

We worked outside for a while and it wasn't too bad. Still humid but it didn't seem quite as warm. Looks like the high temps have set in for several days.

Erin made open faced sloppy joes for her supper. Used garlic butter for the bread and put pepper jack cheese on top. The recipe my girls use for sloppy joes, I made for them when they were kids.

Maybe some rain tomorrow. You and Bits can hang out together.

    1. Thanks. Yes, the tomatoes are covered in blooms and bity maters. Our Kroger just remodeled - I really like it now. Funny, I usually don't like the changes, but this one makes since. I have read 2 up in N IN are closing, just little business.
It wasn't too bad out on Sunday.
sloppy Joe is so good, and open face is easy to eat. I still make mine like mom did too.
      Have a great week.

  13. Heat stroke is nasty the way it suddenly kicks in. I'm glad you recognised what it was and was able to deal with it quickly.
A door on one of my kitchen wall cabinets was hanging unevenly when I got back from my travels. When I investigated I found out that the fixings for attaching the cabinet to the wall had torn out of the chipboard and taken a good chunk of the chipboard with it. It was actually the cabinet that was leaning, rather than the door!
My husband was out for the day and I was afraid it would crash down, so ended up taking it off the wall and putting a spare bookcase on the worktop to hold my crockery. We both rather like the 'unfitted kitchen' look, but agree that our 36 year old units could probably do with replacing. We won't be rushing into anything though, as what we have now will work until we find something we really like at a good price.

    1. Me too! I don't want to do that again.
That would have been bad if that had come down all the way. I am glad you caught it, and had a great remedy. Amazing how many things age and finally need replaced. You came up with a good fix for now and it didn't cost you a thing.
      Have a super week.

  14. Cheryl, I'm so glad you're ok! And that wasn't even the heat of the day! I'm always getting onto my husband for wanting to mow in the middle of the afternoon, for some reason. Summer is just too dangerous.

  15. Good Morning Cheryl! Just checking in to say hello and let you know I’m still here. You be careful in that heat. It can be brutal! I’ve seen a few court cases lately, that I’d love to be a jury member on!! They’d throw me off, I’m sure, because my bias would definitely be showing against the rapist, murderer, etc.

Oh, that is why they said bye-bye to me. Very strong opinions and they sure didn't like my answers! I mean we weren't there to go to Sunday school - there was a real reason to be in court!!! This case was a year and half in the making they said - so something was up!
