Hello all. Hope this finds you all well. It is a cloudy morning here - the air feels like you are wearing it! We had a nice downpour yesterday afternoon, and it appears it rained overnight as well. I didn't hear it - but everything is still wet this morning. May gets some more today.
Things are growing like crazy, including weeds!
It is getting close to school being back in session here. A couple weeks and the kiddos start back at it. Just doesn't seem right to me. But that being said, there is still a lot of summer to be had. Kiddos still need treats and goodies (adults too). There will still be pool times, picnics and parks and just plain playing around. After school treats will be nice to have around and today let's talk about some things we can make at home with things we have around. It is also time for all those good and healthy meals from garden goodies. There are some things that just scream summer to me.
Think about making popsicles with Kool-aid, pudding or yogurt. Always refreshing. You can use popsicle molds or use ice cube trays. A nice cool and refreshing treat. Don't forget about rice krispy bars or no bake cookies too - the youngsters love them.

Some of my favorite summer meals are plain simple and just say 'good old fashioned summer food' to me.
Nothing better - well, except maybe fried zucchini or fried green tomatoes!!!!My favorite salad of summer. It is so stinking refreshing and light. Mom used to make it, I make it and still love it today!!Do you have a favorite summer treat or summer meal that just makes your day? Some things just take me back to a day in time that all in life was easy and fun for me.
We often had a 'picnic' on the front porch of pbj sandwiches or bologna sandwiches and Kooli-aid. My friends and I would sit out there and enjoy and then run off to play. Momma always had some kind of homemade treats made.
We had a huge garden, so many (most) of our meals came straight from the garden, especially in the summer. I loved them. I think that is why I love them so much today.
Just some fun ideas to make for yourself or the kiddos. Enjoy these days of summer - even though they are hot. Before you know it, it will be frigid outside again.
Have a lovely and fun day.
Make a treat!!!!!
Puffed wheat & rice krispie squares are kitchen regulars in the summer.
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me. Young or old - those have been yummy treats!
DeleteOrange Julius! That was always a favorite place to stop in the mall. I haven't been in a mall in years. That used to be a form of entertainment, looking even if you didn't buy anything. Sounds pathetic now.
ReplyDeleteIt looked like we got rain here overnight. More is expected today.
I haven't been to the mall in years! I don't know what is there anymore. But it did used to be a 'destination' to have fun and meet up.
DeleteThe rain sure is making things grow!
I have so many summer favorites. Tomato, basil, motz pizza. (this doesn't even have to be a pizza. I've taken a slice of bread, slice of tomato, motz and basil and heated it up and it's good too.) BLT's. Fried green tomatoes. Homemade salsa. I could go on and on. Enjoy your day!!
ReplyDeleteI hear that! That sounds good. Yep, BLT, salsa, fried green tomatoes, etc. are all so very, very good. I just love summer foods!!!!
DeleteI'm a fan of salads in the summer, potato, pasta, greens with veg, fruit...it doesn't matter much as long as it is cold.
ReplyDeleteMom always made home made popsicles from Kool-Aid for us. I've never Orange Julius, though there was one at the mall. And the only snow cone I've had was in Hawaii!
We would have picnics occasionally, though my Dad didn't like eating outdoors, with hotdogs cooked over a fire, and toasted marshmallows for dessert. We do that here now too, with Eli when the weather cooperates.
Salads are very yummy and make a nice cold dish.
DeleteWe grew up with snow cones - it was just a popular thing here.
Toasted marshmallows are so good - I want mine roasted dark!
I bet Eli really enjoys all the goodies and fun!
Oh yes indeed, black toasted marshmallows! Yum! :) I do believe it's been years since I had one.
DeleteI don't like eating outdoors because it's always buggy and I get so tired of that. Ants, mosquitoes, bees - all God's critters are hungry and want to picnic with (or on) me!
A tasty summer dish is Wilted Cucumbers. Joy of Cooking has a recipe. I wonder how that would be with, say, wilted zucchini? Has anyone tried that?
MaryB
LOL - funny, some don' like them roasted dark at all.
DeleteYeah, the buggers are usually flying around and want something or someone to snack on. Having their picnic too!
I have never had or heard of wilted cucumbers - but I have had wilted lettuce and I love that! I had forgotten about that - something I need to make soon.
If you could use cukes, don't know why zucchini wouldn't work!
It is strange to hear that your kids are almost at the end of their summer holidays, whereas school holidays in England don't start until next week.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite summer treat is melon. I know that they are available in supermarkets all year round now, but somehow they only taste right in the summer time.
Tracy, a few years ago, they pretty much started year-round school here in many places. They go 6 weeks, get a couple off. Then in summer they get a little longer break than during the school year. We used to get out for break around the end of May and then we didn't go back until after the first of Sept. (Labor Day).
DeleteMelons are so yummy. Nothing like cold melon. Yes, they are much, much tastier in the summer. Fresh is always best.
I have a tomato cucumber salad that we just love. They are so good and refreshing for summer time. The sweet potato brownie sounds so neat. I’ll definitely have to try those. It’s hard to believe school starts in just a couple of weeks here. It sure did go by fast for them.
ReplyDeleteYes, those fresh produce salads are just so good and refreshing.
DeleteKids just don't seem to get much time at home anymore. Kind makes a rush of vacation season for folks.
I am going to make that sweet potato brownie this week, and will be curious about how it tastes. I love sweet potato and always have some here.
