Frugal Happenings 10/7

Happy October my friends!
I am not sure if we have any Canadian readers - but if so - here is a wish for a Happy Thanksgiving!

The end of September was exceptionally cool - figured fall was here for sure.  First day of October warmed up - and behold - it's summer again!!!!!!!  We have been in the 80's and humid most of the past week.  This coming week is supposed to be much of the same till Friday - and then I think we will be able "to hear" the temps drop from what they are saying!!!!  LOL  We have had rain quite a bit this week as well - so the air is just full of moisture - ugh!
Allergies are raging.

I know I am always behind the cool kids when it comes to learning things or doing or seeing things!  Haha.
This week we FINALLY got around to watching the movie God's Not Dead.  What a great movie!  From what I understand there is a part 2 and 3 out now!   I will definitely look forward to those as well.  Just a note:  IF you are more behind than me - it's a movie worth watching!

My frugal week:
  • Used the crock pot and made a small pork roast  and got a couple different meals from it.
  • Used up several older mis-matched apples to make a crisp.  Added an 8 oz. can of cranberry sauce to it - YUM
  • Chopped and froze 4 quarts of peppers
  • Still picking a tiny bit of produce.  4 1/2 lbs. of tomatoes, and about 3/4 b. of peppers.
  • Did a bunch of printing of forms for G
  • Picked a bouquet of New England asters
  • G ordered a new battery for his computer.  NOT cheap - but we saved 10% by ordering and having delivered to their store.  I ran down there (20 minutes away) and got it.  10% is 10%!
  • Dropped off 2 big boxes of donations on the way to p/u battery (so glad to have those gone)
  • Made 2 pair of sleep shorts from old jammies I came across in the drawer.  I can't sleep with anything around my legs - so I made shorts.  Also used extra material to make 4 more hankies.
  • Bottled up 24 individual bottles of water for storage.  (was given the pop bottles)
  • Straightened and cleaned and organized under the sink base in kitchen this week.  Got rid of all kinds of stuff and organized by category of goods!
  • Cleaned out and straightened pots and pans cabinet
  • I have been organizing and de-cluttering like crazy
  • I ran to the orchard and got apples and cider - my fall splurge.  I got Honey Crisp apples - oh my they are good!  (like I said I splurged - those babies are expensive)
  • I vacuumed and vacuumed and vacuumed some more this week!  Cleaned floors, rugs, furniture, blinds, lamps and vents - also vacuumed over and under and behind everything!  I vacuum regularly - but this was a BIG FALL CLEAN!
  • Been combining things together.  Jars in frig.  Open packs of candy into quart jars.  Cleaning stuff in bottles.  Soap in partial containers.  You get the idea.

Meals this past week:

Pork roast, potatoes, carrots and onions.
Skillet pozole' (same ingredients as soup - just not soupy!) pork, toms, and hominy
BLT's
Taco salad
Fried chicken livers, mashed potatoes and country style gravy
Dirty rice w/ground sausage and red beans and biscuits
Frittata - made with leftover over rice/sausage and leftover biscuits w/jelly

Apple crisp was enjoyed over many days.
All leftovers used for lunch or mixed in other dinners.

I managed to keep busy this week.  I just love the feeling of seeing things get cleaned for fall, things, getting trashed (just out of the house), things going out the door to bless others, things being accomplished.  It makes ME feel accomplished!
I work in short spurts on projects and seem to get more done.  I did spend a couple hours moving furniture and such when vacuuming - but I was on a roll! (tired too!)

How was your week?  Any good deals?  Add any garden goodies to your pantry?
Give us a shout out and let us know what you are all up to.

Prayers that you al have a safe and healthy week.  Stay frugal and stay sweet!
Blessings from our humble home to yours.

EDIT:  If you need a ear to ear smile or proof of God's wonders today - please go over and read today's post  At Rivercrest Cottage

  1. Cheryl, thanks so much for the shout out about "our miracle" post today. Prayers from dear blog friends like you have meant so much to us.

I've also been purging...some going to younger friends who can use kitchen things we seldom do use ourselves. My cabinets now have room to breathe! And of course it makes it much easier to find the things we really do use.

    1. No problem - I just felt everyone should be able to smile and praise the Lord as I did today. So happy for you.

It always feels good when you end up with extra room. As you said it makes it so much easier to find things.
      Have a great week.

    1. Oh I hear ya on the apples. I did splurge - but not sure that will happen ever again! LOL

Rain is a great incentive to organize and clean.
      Have a good one.

  6. I've never been one of the cool kids and I really dont mind that this is the case.
I too have been cleaning like a maniac all week. Bluey and I went on a road trip in our caravan for 14 weeks, leaving Katie at home to look after everything. We got home and Katie and I jumped into her car for a 14hr road trip to get to my sons Engagement Party. I had a word to him about him trying to get home to see his Dad before he heads to your part of the world for 10 weeks training. He and his family followed Katie and I home. Bluey had a wonderful surprise. We had a week of a rolly polly bubba and a very energetic 2 yr old. We were sad to see them go but are glad to have our home back. So this past week I have been cleaning up and getting my home back to its state of quiet peace. I'm not quite there yet but not too far away.
I hired a carpet shampoo machine and did over our carpet squares(my house is ceramic tiles throughout) and the micro suede lounge. I also did the velvet of the dining room chairs. My goodness this machine has made such a difference.
It looks like the cleaning bug has infected us on opposite sides of the world. I am going to hang out some washing and then come in for a coffee and a bit of a break.
Enjoy your lovely clean and organised home.

    1. Jane you have had quite a lovely time this year. I kept up with your journey on FB - and you sure had some adventures. How fun.
How neat that your son is coming to the U.S. for a while. I hope he gets to have a few adventures while here, and not all work!

I think the cleaning bug has hit many f us. I am no means totally organized - just too much stuff. But I am working on it.
      Have a lovely day!

    1. I just do what needs to be done. There is plenty more.
That movie came out at theaters probably a couple years ago - but we don't go to them. I wait till I get it on TV.

      Have a great one.

  8. Cheryl, I have seen all three of the "God's Not Dead" movies, and they are terrific. Sounds like you had a really productive week. I was motivated to scrub the shower and clean the bathroom this weekend. As I work 5 days (M-W, then F-S) it is difficult to deep clean in between the normal errands and a little time for self. My shower in this apartment came with some sort of "film" for lack of a better work. Not a slimy one, one that has some actual texture to it. I have been using comet, baking soda, sprayed it with bleach, etc. and using a tough scrubbing pad with a handle, all to no avail. So this week I got that scrubbing pad and first sprayed with the solution of blue dawn, vinegar and hot water. Almost overpowering, but I scrubbed and scrubbed, and don't you know - it's still there. Ia think they had re-grouted in there before I got the apt. and never completely got that off.I thought it would work, but I sure can't. And I have now been scrubbing for over 9 months. Any suggestions? I got the normal vacuuming, and dusting done. I also have water and other food put away because we might experience some of Hurricane Michael. We are expecting some of the winds and rain as we are on the "right" side of the storm coming mid-week. Might not be able to get out to do the weekly errands or wash clothes, but have everything I need in case that happens. Knowing what you need and having it in place is so comforting. I made a big meatloaf last night for dinner, and that will be work lunches this week - meatloaf sandwiches are just the best.

  9. Norma thanks for the heads up on the other two movies. We will surely watch them.

I have no other solutions for the bathroom - it sounds as if you have tried everything. You might just ask at the office if they have something or someone that will get that film off.

You are always so prepared, so I am sure you will get through this storm. Make sure you have extra clothes and maybe food/drink at the office - just n case you would get stuck there for a day or so.
Prayers it doesn't affect people badly. Stay safe.

  10. Yes I am a Canadian reader and yes we are enjoying a beautiful Thanksgiving day. It is foggy and a slight misty rain which makes it all so cozy. We enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday with my daughter who is over from the States. This morning we attended a Thanksgiving service at church. We have so much to be thankful for!!!!
