Frugal Happenings 4/7

Well here we are at the end of the first week of April.  How did this happen already?
We are finally getting a little better weather.  It has warmed up a little and should be decent most of the week.  We do have a prediction of that nasty four letter "S" word later in the week.  Just flurries - but still!
Things are really greening, and I see the first mowing being this week.  My forsythia are trying to bud out, and many flowers are poking their little noggins through the ground.

It has been a very quiet week.  I went out Wednesday, to make a grocery run and noticed a ways from home that the temperature gauge in the Blazer was starting to peg out at the high point.  Crap!  I knew enough to not drive it any further.  Gladly I was in a really safe and nice area.  I called AAA and they came (no extra charge) and took me and my Blazer to our shop.  The shop brought me home.  After 3 days - I got it back Saturday afternoon.  My radiator cracked down the side.  It was original (2002).  It could have been worse.
I really anticipated a huge bill - it ended up being around $360, which I didn't think was that bad - considering.  THAT is why we save!

So needless to say, I did noooooooo shopping this week.

My frugal week:
  • I did go up to the library on Monday - hadn't been in a while
  • Made an apple walnut cake with items I had on hand
  • Got to air the house many times this week
  • Only heat was first thing each morning
  • I found a sturdy wooden captain's chair (think dining room) out back in the neighbors heavy trash area.  I brought it home and will use it as a plant stand somewhere out in the yard.
  • The daffodils finally perked back up after the 20's and I picked a lovely bouquet for the kitchen
                                                         They sure make me smile!!!!!
  • I got a lot of mending done this week
  • Made up a batch of dill pickle cheese spread
  • I did manage to get some yard work done - as things started to dry out.  Rain coming again today!
  • When I got to p/u the Blazer - I did stop to get G's scripts at WM (he was out).  3 scripts of 90 days each was $45 total.  Not bad at all.
  • All the usual stuff - making tea, meals from home, cold water laundry, etc.
Meals this past week:
Baked fish, oven fries and home canned slaw
Southern stroganoff (spicy & made with ground beef) green beans
Pork chops, fried hominy w/onions & peppers
Cold sandwiches, cheese spread & crackers and chips
Mexican crunch wraps
Poor man's Swiss steak and mashed pots
Fried chicken and potato salad

                                                               Mexican crunch wraps

It sure is amazing how lost one feels when there is no handy dandy vehicle to jump into sitting in the drive!  It is a bit humbling, but it also proves that we don't have to be on the go all the time.

How was your week?  Did you get any deals?
How is spring (or fall depending on where you live) starting out?

I pray that you each have health and healing for you and your families.  Stay safe and stay frugal.
Blessings from our humble home to yours.

  1. You are so right Cheryl. We are addicted to going and I love to do it but it's amazing how you can put off a lot of going when you have to. Dill CHeese spread sounds delicious!

    1. I think sometimes God is saying 'slow down', and we need to listen!
I post how I did the cheese spread this week! Super easy.
      Have a good week.

  2. What's in those Mexican crunch wraps? They look like a good summer dinner with raw veggies.

I'm gonna pick my 2nd daffodils bouquet today. They just scream out that it's Spring, don't they? I've got 3 varieties to combine. The tiny ones bloomed yesterday.

We're supposed to have 3 warm days before another cool down and I'm looking forward to SANDALS! OPEN WINDOWS! AFTERNOON READING OUTSIDE!!
Hubby mowed yesterday. He set up the bird bath and our mourning doves are already sitting under it.

Last week was another forgettable meal mess of last minute throw togethers. We have 2 busy times at church- in October and April. This week seems it will be a little better. What I remember lol...
    Wrapped hot dogs
    Caesar salad
Mexican cheese soup ... Or was that last week!?
    Cheese pizza
    Tuna sandwiches

    I'm making my menu tonight.

Sorry about the car but it sounds like it all happened in a tolerable way being in a good area and you were financially prepared! Yay you! Dave Ramsey is so right when he talks about first having a car crisis and then a money crisis. From there it can spiral into all kinds of other problems. We've all seen it and possibly experienced it. **raises hand*_

    Have a blessed week!

    1. I will add the crunch wraps to the same post as dill pickle spread!

Daffodils are just so sweet. You have to smile. I have had some windows open - haven't read outside, but did some yard work. Flip-flops coming soon!!!!!!!

Your menu sounds good. I never make a menu plan - I just figure it out as I go. Maybe the night before or the morning of. I am not a good planner in that way!!!!

Well I figure paying for a car repair is so much more frugal than paying a car payment for years on end. The tow truck driver was amazed at the year of the vehicle - he said it looked great. We do take care of our stuff.
I was very fortunate for sure.

      Have a great one!

  3. That wasn't a bad rice for a new radiator. I've had that happen to mine too. Glad you were in a safe area when you pulled over. The crunch wraps look so good. Just think of staying at home as having some no spend days. GLad you were able to get it back already.

    1. They don't make things like they used too - plastic car parts!
I was lucky. And yes, it didn't hurt me a bit to stay home - I missed nothing.
      Take care.

  4. Looking forward to your recipes. The dill pickle spread and mexican crunch wraps sound tasty.
Love the daffodils. They make me happy too.
Sorry about the car, but I'm glad it wasn't worse.
It has been a rough few weeks for us. We had to put our 13 year old girl cat to sleep. She had cancer, and it was opening up and bleeding so she was in some pain. And for the past few weeks, my 13 year old male cat has been having diarrhea and losing a lot of weight. He had an u/s, and it looks like he has lymphoma. One of the treatment options was surgery and chemo, but we are not putting him through that. I have felt so disorganized lately, and all the vet bills have been expensive, so I wanted to check your blog. You always have great ideas.
    Thank you!

    1. Oh Kathy I am so sorry. I have spent a small fortune on our kitties over the years. I know we all do what we can, but sure don't want them to suffer.
So for your loss (our last girl was 12-13). It hurts so badly. Sorry your boy is going through this as well. Dang it. That makes me so sad.
Prayers for you and for your family. Prayers for your big boy too.

  5. Wow you are so lucky to get out with that small a price on your repair. We are having better weather but so far have only had one really warm day. I have been working in the wet and the mud, and I am still loving it!

    1. I thought I was pretty lucky too. Good guys and he takes care of us. Mom & pop shop.

I have been out some and it was pretty muddy - but it did FEEL GOOD!

  6. We went to visit my oldest daughter and go to the college youngest daughter accepted. It was a crazy busy weekend.

    1. Glad you got to make the visit. I bet the weekend was enjoyed by all.
