Weekly Wrap-Up 6/16

Good morning.  I hope this finds everyone safe and well.  Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there.

It has been quite a week here.  Sometimes a bit overwhelming for sure.  We had some decent weather for a few days.  We had spring, summer and fall all in one week.  Crazy.  Yesterday was horrible as far as weather.  Terrible storms came through the state and there is much damage.
We got almost 4" of rain yesterday, and most of that came in about 2 hours.  Torrential rains!
I have a very flooded back yard and a very wet basement - but consider myself lucky compared to others.  The kids next door had water up to their knees in their basement!!!  A tornado hit 10 minutes up the road.
Thankfully it is clear at the moment.

I just keep thinking about the farmers.  They had a slight reprieve this week to get some things done and I imagine it was all for naught now.  Flooding is covering a lot of the state.  More rain tonight and tomorrow!
My opinion is God is letting us know He is still in control!  We need to quit destroying this planet.

I saw my first lightening bugs of the season this week.  They make me smile.  The first ice cream truck of the season came down the road this week as well.  They always take me back to being a little girl!
My lilies are absolutely covered with buds.  In a few days there will be a sea of yellow and orange in the backyard!  I sure hope my garden plants survive all this flooding!  Little bun-bun (the bunny) is thriving and growing - so cute.

I had to go turn a funeral visitation this week and took my sister with me.  On the way there my Blazer started making noise and smelling hot.  Geesh, I repeat I have my sister with me - she is 88 and we are 30 minutes from home.  We get to the funeral home and my brother went and looked.  Thought he knew what it was and said I should be able to get home.  Thankfully we did.
Got it in shop this week and it was what he said and more.  Brakes, rotors and calipers on the whole back end = big bucks!!!  UGH!  I guess peace of mind is priceless though.

My week in revue:
  • Made hummingbird nectar - they are showing up regularly now!
  • I got FREE flowers from the florist when I went to make a purchase.  They always send you home with flowers when you go in.  I had enough for 2 bouquets - down to one now.
  • I ran to the library and got a couple books
  • Pulled more weeds
  • Finished planting the garden plants.  Zucchini in now (hope they aren't drowned)
  • Froze the last little bit of milk in a jug in ice cube trays - will be good for smoothies
  • Had dinner Sunday at my sisters.  Got to visit with one niece and her husband.  We don't see each other often
  • Sis sent home leftovers with me - they provided me with 2 meals
  • Stopped at Kroger (across the road from repair shop) and got black seedless grapes for .88/lb.  Fresh ear corn 8/$1.  Bushes baked beans (nice size cans) .99/each.  Angel food cake for 1.99.
  • Have 2 full water barrels!  I still have not had to water anything I have planted - the rain keeps coming!!!
Meals this week:
Dinner at sisters
Potato cakes with a small piece of chicken cut up in them (from leftovers)
Last potato cake and a nice chicken breast - made a fruit smoothie as well
Piece of pizza from the freezer and a banana (it was late)
Homemade tostadas
Red beans/rice (with cooked burger from freezer) and biscuits
Fried corn and seasoned turkey burger   (2nd burger went in freezer)

It has been quite a stressful week.  I have been kind of emotional.  This too shall pass.
The sun is shining today, I have my home and my kitties and I can get through anything else.  I am much better than many in my state this morning.  Praise the Lord.

This is my front walk-up.  I love it.  Some may think it is over grown but it makes me smile.  I love the variety.

How was your week?  Did you get any good deals?  How is the garden doing?  I hope you have no weather situations causing problems.

May you all stay safe and healthy this week.  Prayers of healing for those in need.
Prayers for all the farmers in this difficult season.

Blessings from my humble little home to yours.

  1. Goodness, it has been an eventful week and not always in a good way. We're almost desperate for rain here while you're flooded. I sure wish we could share.

Hope this week brings more smiles than tears.

    1. Yes, some events I would like to just pass on by! I sure wish we could share the water as well. It is just so horribly wet across our state.
Thank you - I am hoping for more smiles as well!
      Have great week.

  2. Well with all this strange weather I bet food prices are going to sore. I am sorry you have had an emotional time, but it is to be expected, here is a virtual hug from me. (HUG)

    1. Yes mam, the prices are going to go through the roof. I am afraid we aint seen nothing yet!
Everything is just different when you don't have someone to share with. I'll be fine - but thank you for the HUG!

  3. Weather better here this week which is good as we are at the seaside. Terrible flooding in Lincolnshire though as 2 months rain fell in two days. Feel so sorry for the people affected. Your flowers are pretty.

    1. Oh how lovely by the seaside. That would be so nice.
Sorry for all the flooding - many places in the U.S. having the same problem.
Thank you - my little country style garden.

  4. I'm sorry you had a rough week, I hope this one's better.
Know that we are all praying for you. Snuggle your kitties, feed your birds and squirrels and tend your garden, because these are the things that feed your soul. Hugs to you.

    1. Thanks Savannah. I need the prayers and sure do appreciate them!
You got that right - I have those sweet babies and my love for gardening to make me happy.
      Thank you!

  5. We are supposed to get a bad storm tonight. We will see how it goes. I think your front walkway looks lovely. I was never one to color in the lines so I am a let it go and look pretty type. Sorry about the cars expenses. I am glad your brother was able to give you some type of idea and that you didn't get stuck and need to be towed. Hoping you have a better week ahead. Sending lots of prayers and hugs your way.

    1. I am the same way - I like what I like. Old fashioned gardens are what I like.
Stuff happens. It was costly - but sure cheaper than a car payment.
I have thought about a new vehicle as mine is 17 years old - but very few miles and pretty much all major stuff has been replaced. So will keep it for a few more years.
Things will be get better I know it!
      Thanks sweetie!

  6. I totally agree with the first part of your statement: "My opinion is God is letting us know He is still in control! We need to quit destroying this planet." But I don't for a moment that the bad weather is punishment for us "destroying this planet." Rather I firmly believe that it is our sinfulness (breaking commandments left and right, immorality, and blatant disregard for the sanctity of life) that is being punished. We, as a society, have ceased to listen to God's word and obey His commandments. When that happens, as shown over and over again in the scriptures, watch out! Destruction is near.

So glad to hear that you made your journey safely, even with car trouble. You're so blessed to have a florist that gives you flowers!! Your front walk is lovely with the variety of flowers and plants--no doubt it brightens your outlook every time you see it. Thanks for keeping up the blog and sharing so much with us. Blessings to you in the coming week.

    1. Oh I totally agree with you. You said what I wanted and meant to say so much more eloquently. Thank you.
      Yes society needs much improvement.

Thank you. It was a stressful ride - but I made it. I do love my flowers.
      May your week be blessed.

  7. 2nd try- I'm gonna do this in 2 posts in hopes I won't lose an entire one again.

Based on my own experience of losing someone, it takes at least a year to cycle through all the emotions and processing everything. No shortcuts that I know of so be kind and patient with yourself.

Ah, rain. I saw our church garden up close this morning and the tomato plants were full, but few buds and just a green tiny tomato. Definitely not a good growing year unless you're my hydrangeas! They look amazing.
Speaking of flowers, what a wonderful gift you got. They're lovely.

    1. have never been extremely patient! I guess I have to be kinder to myself now. It is just so hard.

The growing season is being hampered every where for sure. I do not believe there will be any corn that is "knee high by the 4th of July"! At least not around here.

  8. I got some of those Kroger deals, too. I got beans, mayo, kielbasa, & some other great coupon deals. We had extra expenses this week so I was glad to find them.

    Meals last week were:
    Hot dogs and chips
    Chicken taco salad
    Peppery beef on noodles
    Hamburgers and pasta salad
    Spaghetti and meat sauce
Garbage salad (everything that needs using up!)

Got a few bigger messes cleaned up and have 2 big ones to conquer this week. I'm in my Bathroom zone. I need to go through the master closet and the bathroom pantry. It's time to purge old meds.

    Let's see. I'm reading:
The Warriors by John Jakes (Kent family chronicles)
Best Kept Secret by Jeffrey Archer (Clifton chronicles)
Mrs. Dunwoody's Excellent Instructions for Homekeeping
Just finished The Secret by Beverley Lewis on CD

Have a good weekend, Cheryl and all!

    1. Your meals sound very good. Thanks for listing them. Mine aren't that exciting these days and it's nice for people to get other ideas.

It is going to be rainy here all week - so I need to work on inside projects. I need to get my bum in gear!
      Have a great one.

  9. I'm so glad your safe and the damage wasn't too bad. The rain just keeps coming down here too. Very few farms have planted they are just collecting the insurance. I don't blame them they couldn't get in the fields if they wanted to. We went by a sod farm today and everything was yellow! What a spring!
You will need your water at the middle of July I bet. I'm glad I got mine this year! Have a great night CHeryl.

    1. It is awful - so many places under water. Boy are groceries going to go up this fall.
I bet you are right. It always seems to be feast or famine - so we will probably have a drought later!
      Have a good day.

  10. The weather... just the start of the birth pains the Bible teaches, before the End Times. Keep watching the sky.
Thanks for the reminder what do to with "leftover" milk. The little grands were here overnight and Sissy still drink nut milk. I have most of a quart and while it stay good for quite a while, they won't be back to stay overnight for a few months. I will freeze some in 1 cup portions for her and the rest in the ice cube trays for smoothies as you suggested.
Reading: The Kitchen Diaries (cookbook) by Nigel something (British author)
Rose in Bloom by LM Alcott
Other things I'm doing: Besides working at the off-the-farm job, we are gearing up for DS1 & family's visit in July. All the Big grands coming. I have 3 floors in this old house to clean & get ready. Sleeping arrangements for 9 people.
We have grass hay to cut & bale. An old cow recently purchased to return as she is barren. Will be replacing her with a younger cow. Taking our 2 fat butcher calves to the butcher for our annual meat. My summer squash is blooming and I found tiny grape/cherry tomatoes on the bush tonight. Cucumbers are slowly getting their first set of real leaves. The herbs are going bananas. And my hollyhocks will be blooming soon. The clematis is blooming like crazy now. I had hopes of working in the other flower beds but so far I haven't had time to get out there. Maybe this fall.
Finally, keep taking care of you. It takes time to get used to a new reality.

    1. Wow it is going to get super busy at your house. I bet you are excited about the family coming. I am wondering how you find time to read with all you do. That is a lot of upkeep.

My plants are slowly flowering and getting set. It seems everything will be coming on a little later this year.

It sounds like your garden and flowers are flourishing.
Have a nice week and don't over do it!

  11. Hugs, just the biggest hugs. This week is going to be a great week for you. I am sending the best blessing and prayers it will be. I am crossing fingers your new plantings did not get flooded. I am still trying to get mine in.

That is so sweet your florist gives you free flowers. I love your front walk. It's not overgrown. It is perfect. Have you ever read She has the most beautiful overgrown garden. Her yard is about the same size as both of our yards. She does a lot of frugality art journaling posts. She is always sharing posts of her gardens too.

I love lightning bugs Our lightning bugs have been showing up since late May. That is early for them. I love your rabbit's name. Bun-Bun is so cute. We get a lot of baby rabbits in our neighborhood and my home. They are so adorable. I am blessed to have a lot of wildlife. I live right on the city limits.

I did find a great deal this week. DH really found it. We found a very expensive brand new aquarium with really expensive testing kits and all the supplies for only $50. I know that sounds like a lot. Everything is worth over $300. It has never been used. We were so excited and happy. The rest was all my normal frugal things.

    1. Thank you for the blessings. I am optimistic for a better week!
I will have to check that blog out. I am not a conventional gal - so I do everything a bit different.

The bunny is just so cute and little - so Bun-Bun seemed appropriate! I live on city limits too and it is just amazing how much wildlife there is around here. Nothing big, but lots of little critters.

That is quite a find on the aquarium and supplies. Good job. That will be lovely all set up.

      Have a good week!

  12. I am so sorry about the stressful week. As my Mom used to say, if it wasn't one thing, it was fifty. Hope your car will last a good long time without any more troubles. And I hope you have some blue skies. Sending lots of hugs and prayers. Love the flowers!

    1. Yep, I remember that saying as well! LOL!! Very true.
Probably not many blue skies this week. Calls for rain everyday! I will utilize this time to get stuff done inside.
      Have a good day!
