Weekly Wrap-Up 2/20

Happy Sunday to all.  We are less than 30 days out until Spring!!!!!   YAY!
We have had spring and winter again this past week and it looks like the upcoming week will be much the same.  Days in 50's and 60's and then BOOM snow and ice and highs in the 20's!!!!  YEP - one 24 hour period we dropped 40* - went from a high of 60^ with downpours to sleet, freezing rain and snow and a high in the 20's.  Craziness!
We had so much rain one day (ground was still frozen) that there was a lake in the back yard, by the next morning there was an ice rink!  All the warm and rain and there are still bits of snow (from week before) to be seen on the ground.  Hopefully they will be gone for a few days between today and tomorrows warm up.

I have cardinals galore every morning and evening.  They seem to visit just after dawn and at dusk.  They are just glorious.
Blackie has been doing lots of roaming this week and worrying Mom!  He was gone almost 3 days and came back starved and thirsty - mainly slept for a day and a half and then off again!  He left after dinner this last time (right before the ice storm) and only showed up 48 hours later to eat and then off again (last evening)!  I guess spring makes him think he can still get frisky!!!  LOL
The moon has been so full and bright for what seems forever!  When there are no clouds - it sure has been something to see.

Another fairly quiet week here.
My week:
  • Removed ALL the bedding and laundered.  Laundered throw rugs and towels and my regular laundry.  Amazing to me how one person can have so much laundry to do!
  • Had another half bin of sticks and limbs to pick up in the back yard.  Wind and squirrels!
  • Thoroughly cleaned all the wood floors
  • I ran to Aldi - the last day of sale and got ground beef for 1.99/lb.  I was amazed they still had a lot of it.  There shelves looked pretty darn good.  I didn't notice too much that had increased in price.  Canned veggies were still .50 and less, canned tuna was .65 tin.  Baking supplies were in stock and great prices, and milk and eggs were pretty decently priced.  Of course, their cheese is the best price in town - 1.75/half pound.  $3.50 a pound for cheese can be found nowhere else around here. Overall, I was pleased - I hadn't been there since before Christmas.
  • I did stop at Kroger solely for cat food and litter.  I am just mindful to get as much pet supplies as possible.  That is all I got there.
  • Using what I have and fixing all meals at home.
  • I did get 10 lbs. of the sale hamburger and rewrapped into 1/2 lb. packs for freezer.  I was in no way out - but had to add at the price!
  • Cleaning and dusting, doing all the normal stuff
  • Got to air the house one day
Meals this past week:
Cheese topped chopped steak and pizza bites
Taco meat/beans over Spanish type rice
Using leftover from above - made stuffed pepper skillet by adding chopped peppers (freezer) and cheese
Meatloaf burger, potato wedges and cooked cauliflower
Meatloaf burger, corn and cheesy mashed potatoes
Beef enchilada soup topped with tortilla chips
Beef enchilada soup topped with cheese and sour cream (froze balance)
SNACKS - citrus, apples w/peanut butter, toast and jelly, banana/orange milkshake

Beef enchilada soup - tasted just like enchiladas!

How was your week?  Is your weather getting any better or are you still having the roller coaster that I am having?  Did you get any deals this week?  Have you been "thinking" garden plans?
Love to hear from you all.
Wishing you all a safe and healthy week.  Blessings from my humble little home to yours!

Now may the Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Lord, guide us through this coming week and help us to be our best.  Help us to avoid the negative and evil that is of the earth.  Guide our eyes to see the beauty and wonder and guide our hearts to help each other with love and hope. Amen

  1. Temp yesterday: 5C; today: -22C. There's been some roller coaster temps. Hardly a week goes by without snow to shovel and it's getting old. I focus on the exercise and fresh air. On the flip side, the longer daylight hours are encouraging. My mom's 89th BD is in the books. She's the same age as Willie Nelson but she has no new releases. Three friends also celebrated their birthdays this past week. And a 2nd cousin asked for some family history details that initiated feelings of nostalgia. Decluttering is an ongoing endeavor in this household. Yesterday I moved a tote to the to-go pile only to be gifted with another one later that day! Winter is drawing to a close and I haven't tackled the project of culling old photos that was slated for the to-do list. Planting a garden is still 3 months away in this area so there's time to think about that. I gave up on my see-food diet this past week and still those Lindt chocolates call my name!

    1. It seems we are all on the same roller coaster! The longer daylight hours are bliss!
Happy birthday to your Mom!! Quite a birthday week.
Decluttering will never end here. Just so much stuff. I have not done even half the projects I wanted to do this winter, so don't feel bad.
It is best to wait until after Mother's Day here to plant - so generally sometime in May.
Lindt has a way of doing that!!!!

  2. Our weather is nuts as well but no frozen stuff. The moon sure has been pretty. Our big deal for the week was pork loin for 1.49 a pound which resupplied the pork chops here. I slice it and freeze in two packs. I was really surprised to find it in stock.

    1. Great deal! That is the way to do it. You make the chops just the way you like them.
I am ready for the weather to just settle down!

  3. Our robins are back along with some of the other song birds. I'm hoping that means an early spring.
We will be warm today and then cold w/ snow the rest of the week.
I plan to get alot of my seeds this week. I should be starting plants next month in prep for setting out warm crops around Mother's Day. And I need to order new strawberry plants for a new bed and blueberry bushes for the raised bed. I didn't garden last year (took a break) but DS & I will be going at it again this year. I hope to open up a new spot for potatoes and make arches for the squash.
So many fun plans in my mind. I just need more hours in my day. :)

    1. Your plans sound wonderful and will be lots of fun. Gardening is such a neat activity and you get FOOD as well!
I was just thinking this morning - I wish I would see a Robin. That is always a welcome sign. None here yet - fingers crossed soon.
It is sunny and very windy today - yet warmer. Tomorrow warm as well - then rain comes in and cools it off and chances of snow later in the week. UGH

  4. We had similar weather here this week, warm and rainy and then it turns cold after the rain. We woke up to 26 degrees this morning, which is cold to me.

Your meals sounds delicious. Sounds like you got a lot of work done in your home this week. kudos to you, Cheryl. I hope you have another good week. :)

    1. Nah, just doing all the basic stuff. Nothing exciting here!
      Thanks on the dinners.
Those super cold mornings stink - especially when I have to go out in them.
I know we are all ready for the weather to warm a bit and stay a while!

  5. We did reach above freezing yesterday morning, but by evening we had freezing rain and more snow. It was -21C (-6F) this morning but we're heading to even colder temperatures by morning. No thoughts of gardening in this head of mine yet.

What a great price on hamburger. I'm thrilled when I find it for $5.99 a pound or less. And that's C$!

    1. Wow, that is cold. I don't think we have had a negative temp this year - if we did maybe one. I guess I should quite complaining. LOL
It was a great price on hamburger - don't see that price much anymore. I couldn't pass it up - as I will use it.

    1. How exciting to have your home done and all back together. I bet it is all lovely.
Wet and stormy weather can be gloomy day. Stay in and rest in your home.

  7. Wow on the ground beef price! I haven't seen any that low in a few years at least. And as always, your meals sound delicious.

We're on the road again. Arrived safely. Our thoughts and plans are of the house, gravel drive and storage shed first. Garden plans will have to wait a bit. ;-)

    1. We have regularly had that as a sale price in my area until about 6-8 months ago. Then it has been rare.
Safe travels. Those should be your priorities at the moment. Have a great week.

  8. We are getting more snow tonight, well it started in the early afternoon and it is still coming down. I may just have to break down and look at some gardening books to hopefully get in the mood for spring.

    God bless.

    1. So sorry about the snow. ICK!
I get outside and walk about a lot - just not quite in the mood to think about gardens yet. We still have time!!!

  9. Excellent Scripture, excellent prayer! HaSatan is working overtime these days. We can fight him in the name of our Messiah.

Good deal on the hamburger! That's the same price we paid at Fresh Thyme not long ago. We usually brown the hamburger and season some for taco and some with just salt and pepper. Freeze it on a baking sheet and bag it up. Sure comes in handy.

We were in the Avon Walmart and cat food was almost non-existent, especially the cans.

Good variety of meals! We had a roast for the Sabbath, ate some more of it today and will make tacos of the rest for tomorrow. Was cleaning out the pantry and found two quesadilla makers, one small and more larger. I offered one to Erin if she can use it. I might even make quesadillas tomorrow instead of tacos.

We went down to Rural King to see if they have seed potatoes in yet. A little early yet.

The cardinals are beautiful. We had a cardinal and a red headed woodpecker at the suet the other day. Hoping none of the wild birds bring the bird flu to our chickens.

Hate to see it get cold again. Erin was born on March 21 which was the first day of spring in 1972 and a few days later we had a big snow storm. You never know what the weather will be.

    1. Cat food is definitely hit or miss. You may go in one day and there is tons and the next nothing. I get what I can as often as I can!
Daddy always planted potatoes on Good Friday.
The birds are just so pretty and their songs as lovely. Makes it feel like spring.
There have been bird flu cases in IN. Many! I think I heard they destroyed over 100,000 turkeys in the last few days.

Heck we have had snow and cold in May - never underestimate mother nature!

  10. I'm guessing that Blackie has been snipped?! From the male cats I've had, it seems like they wander anyway. Neutered or not. Our ladies rarely left the yard if they escaped. They made a big effort to sneak out, then they'd just lay on the back porch. After moving to Kansas, our kitty made a run out the door behind the dog after a big snow. Her first snow. She got to the middle of the patio before she realized it and the snow was up to her belly. She lifted one foot at a time, trying to shake it off. Then she looks up at us and let's out this MWOWRRR that I'm sure was some kind of cat cussing. I rescued her, but my mom and I must've laughed at her for 10 minutes. I think she bathed herself for a few hours lol. Silly kitty kat!!!!

I think our birds are completely confused. We've had Juncos since October, which is normal. But the robins have appeared off and on since mid January. We've also had bluebirds, a red capped woodpecker, mourning doves, and even a couple of gold finches. I've only seen one cardinal and no blue Jays...very odd. I'll be curious to see what shows up in spring!! Maybe penguins!

It's been a long week. Hubs has been down with a head cold that just doesn't want to clear out. He tested negative for Covid. He never gets sick this long. He's usually a 3 dayer. I'm a 3 weeker so I'm hoping I don't get it. The weather warmed to the mid 60s today so I aired out the sick house. It smells so good!

Maybe I'll have some fun stuff to report next week!

    1. Yes, and males are just wonderers. I guess they have to rule their domain and the immediate area! Momma never leaves, Fluff wanders a little - but usually just my neighbor's yard or back in the alley. I can call her - she puts her head down as if to say "shoot she caught me" and hops the fence back in the yard!
SO many birds. I have had cardinals and blue jays and finches all winter. Robins - not yet. Lots of doves here as well.
Hoping your hubby gets to feeling better quickly and you stay healthy!!!!!

  11. We had tornado warnings and high winds on Thursday. The winds blew a tree across a line, and we lost power for a day and overnight. Spring is trying to stay here, temps in 60s and 70s. I am looking at my seed packets and tried to find the kind of kale at garden center that I love.

    1. Tornados are sure scary. Spring is definitely WIND time. Glad you are OK. Nice temps!
I don't think I have ever had kale.

  12. Your weather is crazy! We're expecting some snow Wednesday and Thursday. Yay! I'm excited, this will be the 3rd week in a row we get some snow. How lucky you are with all those beautiful cardinals in your yard. I've never seen a cardinal in person. If Blackie lived in our neighborhood he'd be a goner for sure. We live next to miles and miles of open space and when those coyotes get a cat or small dog the sound is just terrible. Glad he's okay though and just being a little frisky in his old age.

    1. Yes, our weather is crazy! Glad you are getting snow that you like.
Cardinals are just so beautiful. They are lovely to see in the snow - that vivid red on the white.
I am so happy we don't coyotes in my area. That would be horrible. I don't think he is all that old - but should be more settled down! Just being a boy I guess. LOL! He goes through stages.
Our fur babies sure do make us fret!

  13. You are busy little beaver. I wish I could find ground beef for $1.99 I would stock up for sure. I love cardinals, we do not have them here and when I visit Sissie, I am always on the lookout for Cardinals.. WE do have mountain bluebirds that are truly blue. SO beautiful.

    1. I have Blue Jays and have seen Blue Indigo Buntings a couple times here (they usually live south of here). I have never seen a real blue bird. I guess we all have our specialties in birds!

  14. I will miss Winter in North Fla. Mild days and no bad weather. Japanese Magnolias and Azaleas are already blooming, and soon the thick pollen will start. With April comes Tornado season and June 1 begins Hurricane season. That's when the heat will drive us indoors. Our menus will change and we'll freeze lots of fresh vegetables mostly from Georgia truck farms. What a big and diverse country we live in weather wise.

    1. It is truly amazing the diversity. One country and so many weather, food, and activity differences. I love spring and its beauty and life coming back - and others look at it with different eyes.
I do not look forward to allergy season, nor tornado season - but I do love all the rest. I am so sorry there has to be such things as hurricanes - they are so destructive.
      Take care!
