Weekly Wrap Up 3/13

Happy Sunday all.  Hope you all remembered to change your clocks!  I feel like I am way behind today!!  I like the spring forward - but this one messes me up more than the fall change.  I just feel behind for a while!  The only reason I get up so early all winter, is because the kitties internal clock does not change.  They expect to eat when ready!  So now Mom gets to lounge a bit longer in the bed (clockwise).  This whole changing the clock thing is crazy in my opinion - I wish they would just leave it all alone!!!!!

One more week to the spring equinox!  We have had a crazy weather week.  Last Saturday we reached 75* - yesterday the high was about 25*.  We had cold rains early on.  Luckily we just had flurries this week and nothing stuck here.  It looks like this coming week should have some spring-like temps.
Not only are the robins back - this week I saw the first red-winged black bird and brown headed cow birds of the season.  The wood peckers have shown back up.
Every morning I am serenaded by the beautiful song of the cardinals.
Daffodil greens are up, lilies peeking out, hyacinths (been here over 35 years) are peeking out and I even saw some red sprouts at the ground at the peonies!  It is coming!!!!!!!
My week:
  • Got to air house last Sunday
  • Got the kitchen faucet flowing well again with vinegar (earlier post)
  • Followed my neighbor to shop for recall work on his vehicle.  It was a nasty rainy, foggy, gray day - made him drive back!  My good deed of week!  LOL
  • Mixed up some soup from freezer and an older can of soup from shelf
  • Found 2 doz. pieces of cookie dough in freezer - took out and baked
  • Baked an older can of biscuits that needed used.  They are tasty!
  • I was going through some totes I had stored away - great surprises!!  10 more lbs. of rice, pounds of dried beans, 32 lbs. of sugar and powdered and brown sugars as well!  WOOHOO!!  All things that last and last.  I am beyond happy.
  • I worked on jarring up a lot of pasta on hand (gallon glass jars)
  • While vacuuming - I cleaned out all the floor register vents thoroughly - oh my!!!
  • Doing more sorting and organizing.  Finding all kinds of things to donate
  • NO grocery shopping at all - stayed home after helping friend
  • Using what I have, cleaning, organizing, de-cluttering (never ends)
Meals this past week:
Pizza sammie!  (2 pcs. pizza from freezer)
Mexican pizza
Mixed soup (potato from freezer & creamy, spicey chicken can) & crackers
Tuna/broccoli/cheesy pasta
Chicken bites, steamed broccoli and roasted potatoes
Creamy turkey & veggie stir fry (all from freezer) over rice
Leftover stir fry & rice with biscuits
SNACKS:  home canned applesauce, cereal and cookies

Homemade Mexican pizza.  This was really good.  (better than Taco Bell). Taco meat, refried beans, cheese, enchilada sauce and salsa.
Pizza sammie!  2 slices thawed - goody sides together and then heated on the gridle like you would a grilled cheese.  Both crust sides were crunchy/crisp and inside all gooey!!!!!  Figured - why not?!!

How was your week?  Any deals?  Staying home and hibernating?  Thinking spring?
I hope you are well and safe and have a great upcoming week.
Blessings from my humble little home to yours.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.
Colossians 4:8-9

Thank you Lord for ALL that we do have and help us be grateful and appreciative.  May we all lend our words, hands and hearts to others to help them in whatever way they need us.  Show us the way.
AMEN

  2. Your meals always look delicious, Cheryl. And I (as always) love the verse and prayer for this Sunday. One of the benefits of moving to AZ is there isn't any time change. Well... Navajo Nation does the time change, but the rest of the state doesn't. Speaking of which, we're making one more trip out there before the move, leaving today. SO many details! And for some of it, it really is best to be there.

    1. P.S. We've been making car load donations to Goodwill. A move inspires one to seriously purge! LOL!

    2. Oh that would be nice no time change. Not many places in U.S. don't do it.
      Thanks on the meals.
Please have a safe and industrious trip!

    3. YAY on donations - yep that would do it. Why move things you really don't need. Blessing others!

  3. One drawback to changing the clocks before bedtime is that when you roll over and the clock says 5:30, your body clock is still saying 4:30 but your mind tells you no, start waking up, cuz pup will be up in a half hour. Ugh!!!!

With my broken wrist, I knew there was no way I could mix my Irish soda bread, so I tried it in the bread maker. A little moister (gummier?) than usual, but it'll do. Making corned beef in the crock pot today, along with potatoes and carrots. There will be enough leftovers to last me all week, I think. Making due, for the most part, with what I have on hand and thinking about planting peas in the next couple of weeks. Later this week, we're supposed to be up near 65, and I want to air the house out and start getting the deck organized for spring and summer. Limiting my driving and consolidating errands when I do need to go out. Make it a great day!

    1. I must have missed it when you told us you had broken your wrist. I broke mine a year ago February and had to have surgery. You have my complete sympathy!

    2. When there is a will there is a way! Corned beef sounds good. I have some left over in freezer. Cabbage is .49/lb. at Aldi this week. May need to get some. Sounds good with potatoes and carrots too.
I think we are to get to 70* a couple days this week - how wonderful. It always get you in the mood for things.
I sure hope you heal nicely and quickly.

  4. Every year I dread the "spring ahead" time change. It takes me 2 weeks before I feel well rested and back in step with the world. I wish they would leave the clocks alone! My daffodils and hyacinths are popping up. The dwarf iris I planted last fall have been blooming for a week. Some of my peonies are showing a couple of inches of red growth. I love spring and the joy it brings.

    1. I like the spring time change in that it stays light later. That is my only like! I agree, you kind of feel behind a lot for a while.
WOW on all the things coming up and flowers blooming!!!! My peonies aren't that high, just sticking their noses out! I sure hope spring is pretty much here to stay! Love the reawakening.

  5. We had more snow this week than we've had in any one week all winter. Wednesday we got a surprise 3" of heavy, wet snow. It was mostly gone by Friday. Then Fri. night into Saturday we got over 8" accompanied by high winds. Enough already!!

The time change always messes us up, too, so this year we decided to not change our clocks. Of course, we will have to adjust for the very few appointments we have, but otherwise we are operating on standard time.

There are blooming crocuses under the snow, and the daffodil and dwarf iris greens are up. I bought onion sets and beet seeds at WalMart. They will go in the front flower bed. Supposedly rabbits don't like the smell of onions (anything in the allium family), so we'll see if that keeps the bunnies away. I need to get seeds started indoors in the next couple of weeks.

All of the undesirable birds are back and plaguing my feeders. Starlings, robins, grackles, red-winged blackbirds, cow birds. There is a very aggressive male robin who thinks he owns the place and is terrorizing the other birds, body-slamming them off the feeders and running them off, so I took two of the feeders inside. I'll be glad when the snow is gone enough that he can get his fill of bugs and worms.

Shopped at WalMart, stocked up on aluminum foil (which has gotten very expensive) and Husband's prune juice. Picked up salad items and dairy at Aldi. Husband got his hair cut for the first time in months. I think she left more on the floor than on his head! He doesn't yet trust me to cut his hair, but I think the time is rapidly coming when he won't be able to go to the stylist.

More quilt making, genealogy and reading this past week. Hoping for a quiet week ahead, too. Temps are to be in the 60s in the latter part of the week, so I might get some more garden prep done.

Dinner is chicken pot pie made with some leftover cooked chicken from the freezer and a small can of chicken from the Tuesday food box. Made chocolate/peanut butter chip cookies with free chips from the food box, too.

    1. Yuck on the snow. You sound like us. We have had only one snow of over and inch and that was all at once in Feb.!!! Got like 8-10".
Good for you on deciding to use the flower bed for ground veggies. Lettuce will pretty it up!
I love the red-winged and cow birds - they stay on the ground here. As do the robins. I can't stand starlings and black birds - oh and pigeons. Bullies all of them! LOL
Pretty smart on not changing your clocks - just don't forget anything important!

Quiet weeks are nice. I think that means life is just happening and we have finally figured out how to stay out of the ruckus!
Love how you get and utilize from the free goods.

  6. I always liked the Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell. I’ve made it before here at home too. One of my favorites.

I saw a red cardinal in the tree outside the kitchen window here today. So pretty.

Nice of you to help your neighbor. Nice of h8. To drive back too.

      Cardinals are just so pretty.

  7. We are being really diligent to use up everything and not waste a crumb if we can. I felt like we lived like that before but we are being even more careful. Yesterday when the Publix ad preview came out I realized that many items in the ad are now fully double what I used to pay for them and that was an on sale price. It really made me think.

Yesterday we went to the discount store and bought 2 Pepperidge Farm bagels, cake mix and frosting for German Choc cake, 2 bran muffin mixes with real blueberries (I think there is a can in the box!), a bag of jelly fruit slices, a case of decaf coffee, 3 tomatoes, 2 dinner mixes add chicken for a main dish and a case of cartons of organic egg whites for $13.44. I am always amazed at the low total there and we are blessed to find those deals every time.

It is supposed to warm up after this weekend and I am hoping so. We will be sleepy heads for 2 weeks now but it must be done.

    Have a good week!

      Have a good one

GM! Add me to the time change haters! It takes me a week to adjust and it's a slow groggy week. Hubs is off this week so I'm hoping we can ease into it a little easier. One can hope.

In the Use it Up category, I found a 2 yr. expired box of chocolate cake mix. I know exactly what I bought it for but the event was cancelled due to Covid. It was in clearance for 50¢ so I thought that was cheaper than homemade. Anyway, I found a Pinterest recipe that was quite timely, as I had 3 overripe bananas on the counter. One box cake mix, 3 ripe bananas, and 2 eggs. I put the batter in 2 loaf pans because it said it all wouldn't fit in one. I sprinkled a handful of chocolate chips on each and baked them for 30 minutes on 350. Really tasty!! It's like chocolate banana bread. Hubs is loving it. Oh, I also threw in some walnuts.

Very windy today, but full sun so we have the heat off. It's in the low 50s. Hoping to get out this week and clean the windows and screens.

I've been enjoying books from The Library of Mom as I fondly call it. My MIL was an avid reader and we had similar tastes. She would bring a suitcase full every visit. She's been gone 2 yrs now and I'm still reading them. I'm on the last of about a dozen Margaret Truman Capitol Crimes she gave me. Political intrigue. They've been pretty good, but definitely leaves me a bit disturbed as to what goes on in Washington and the secrecy. I don't doubt that much of it is based in truth. Egads!! Anyway, if that's your cuppa, I recommend them. Great characters.

Your Mexican Pizza looks delicious! One of my favorite go-to meals is a warmed corn tortilla with shredded chicken and fresh salsa. Aldi has delicious fresh salsa and I always get one when we go. Just had that for lunch, in fact.

Speaking of Aldi, hubs stopped on his way home from work (saves gas from me driving into the city) and loaded us up. I was very afraid to see the receipt but pleasantly surprised to see that most prices of our regular purchases had not increased. Honey had gone up alittle but all else was normal. Our grocery store has been a different story. Prices seem to go up weekly.

Love that Bible verse. It's one I've dwelt on a lot in the past two years.

    1. Great use for use it up items! That sounds really tasty. Hmmm - give me a couple ideas for this week! Thanks.
Love the library of Mom!!! I have a big box of books sis gave quite a while back - need to get busy on them

Good to hear on Aldi. Prices were good last time I went as well. A few things changed, but not much. Great idea for him to stop on the way home.
      Thank you!!!
      Enjoy your week with hubs.

  11. It was nice to air out the house for a few days. Looks like this coming week will be pretty good.

Love Mexican pizza! Pizza Hut used to make the best but of course, they dropped it (actually theirs was called taco pizza). I may make breakfast pizzas this week with sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and cheese.

As always you find timely Scripture for us. I have been listing Scriptures to add to my collection of comforting words.

  12. We changed our clocks in this province up until about the mid-1960's. Then I think we went to DST (not sure - I was just a kid) and never went back. I get so confused with the time change - trying to remember whether we're an hour or two ahead or behind our neighbouring provinces.

What a great idea to grill the pizza sandwich to heat it up. Makes sense it would be good and gooey.
