Cheap Meats and Things I do

 Happy Tuesday to all!
Today I am going to talk about some 'cheap' meat options that I use and have found as of late.  I scour the meat section of the store and take advantage of the mark downs.  Many times I find absolutely nothing that is really good, or that even seems like e decent price.  Other times I hit the mother load, and I stock up.
There are some options that many may not think of.  I try to use items in a new and different way.
Here we go.

I love smoked sausage.  I can fix it for all kinds of meals.  This is the time of the year I often find individual smoked sausage links on sale.  I find them 2 packs/$6.00 quite often.

I love these.  I can find regular, all beef, cheddar, jalapeno.  One package is 6 meals for me!  If buying 2/$6 - that is .50 per meal for a protein.  Can't beat that!!!  I like to eat like a hotdog on bun, just on the plate as my meat, cut up in mac n cheese, with cabbage, with any type of beans, with beans and rice, green beans and potatoes, even add it to soups at types.  There is absolutely no limit to the uses of this product.  Now is the time to get the deals - it is BBQ time - holidays bring great deals.

I came across this in the freezer - forgot I had.  Ground pork 1.95/lb. on clearance.  This can be fixed in any way that you would use ground beef.  Ground beef, ground chicken/turkey and ground pork can all interchange.  Sure the tastes will vary a bit - but with seasonings you can make it taste how you like.
I got one of these out of the freezer and made myself 4 breaded 1/4 lb. ground pork burgers/fritters.  Had one for dinner and froze the others after frying up.  It will be a quick heat and eat some other days.  They are so good.
Here is a couple of the pork burgers.  They just came out of the pan, so still a bit greasy - but they were great after I drained for a few minutes.  I used flour and bread crumbs and a bit of seasoning - that is it.  You could really flatten and make your own fritters!
Add seasonings and make home made sausage.  Use in gravy over biscuits/toast.  Add to casseroles or soups.  No limit to uses.

Here is another item I keep in my freezer.  I do not have the advantage of living on the coast with the availability of affordable seafood!!!!  Living in the heartland, limits your access.  Oh, I could buy crab - for a grand price (usually $17/lb. and up) - and no way of knowing the freshness.  Nah!!!!
I love making crab salad for sandwiches or for crackers on occasion.
A grand crab dip is made from time to time - a mix of cream cheese, crab, shredded cheddar (or what you have) and a little sour cream - and I throw in some chopped jalapeno.  Top with bread crumbs and bake until all melted.  Oh my gosh - what a wonderful hot dip/spread.  You can use in egg rolls, homemade crab Rangoon, add to pasta salad or add to hot cream of soups.  So many uses.  I tend to find these on sale or clearance about 4 times a year.  Usually I get them for 1.99 - 2.99 a pack - (8 oz.).  Sure does make for a cheap and tasty seafood bite!!!!

I showed these finds a couple weeks ago.  The sausage has no limits - and yes, the Kroger sausage has a great flavor.  .75/lb. is unheard of!  I can make as breakfast patties, breakfast sandwiches, added to pizza, meatballs, to beans and rice, to soups, you name it - I can add it!!!
The ham - makes great sandwiches in a quick moment (whether hot or cold).  Great with grilled cheese.  Make your own chicken cordon bleu.  Mix with some cheesy potatoes!  MMmmmmm.

You just have to think outside the box sometimes and be willing to try new and different items.
I will buy chicken on sale, pork loins often go on sale very cheaply - it makes great chops (I cut my own), roast, pulled pork, whatever you can think of.  If you get a loin, and there is only one or two of you - cut that loin into 4 or 5 sections and then freeze.

I buy ground beef when there is a super sale.  I still never pay more than 2.99/lb. for 80% - 85% lean ground beef.  I like a little fat in mine as that is where the true flavor is.  Keeps the meat moist.
When it goes on sale for that price - usually at Kroger or Meijer - I stock up.  I package up in 1/2 pound vacuum sealed packs.  Makes my life easy.

So look around and you may be surprised at what you can find.  Be willing to change it up a bit - a recipe is just something someone has made up - so make your own!!!!!!!!
Here is an idea - add some cream of soup or cheese - potato, rice, or pasta and boom you have a meal of a casserole or pan meal.  Add a veggie side or add to the casserole and you are set.
One pot meals are a favorite of mine - tasty and little clean-up!!!!!!

Don't overlook the cheap cuts and finds!
ENJOY!

  1. Any of the meats in your refrigerator/freezer would be good for a stir fry or skillet meal. You found some excellent buys! Meijer had turkey sausages (like brats) on sale and I cut up one yesterday and put it with little gold potatoes, carrots, lots of onion, red and green cabbage and a bit of fresh thyme from the garden. Delish! Enough left today for a meal with cornbread and maybe some baby lima beans.

Meijer also has mulch on sale 5 for $10 for the two cubic foot bags. Cheaper than the 1.5 cubic foot bag at Walmart for $2.97. (And closer to our house). I need to finish up weeding the south flower bed and spreading mulch. Just about time to plant green beans. We have strawberries ripening and found a hoop system to cover plants from the varmints. The strawberry plants are sending out runners so the Farmer put out containers with dirt so the runners can root and we'll have more strawberries. A few years ago we had tons of strawberries and froze most of them. Plants died out so we started over. The potatoes are really going to town. I will probably use some of them while they are small to put in green beans. Growing your own food is very satisfying, as you well know. Grow-ceries!

Enjoy your day! We are truly blessed with this weather.

    1. FOUND IT! You are right on the stir fry. Any meat is great for that. Your meal of cabbage sounds good. OK - now I want baby limas. You guys keep putting ideas in my head!
Deal on bark! I hope you gets on strawberries again this year. Yes protect them - as all of nature is bringing out their young now!!!! Varmints galore!
Baby potatoes in beans sounds good.
      It has been just gorgeous!!!!!

  2. (Little Penpen) My husband loves sausage, so we make a lot of meals with it. I love the imitation crab meat. I usually eat it right out of the package with fruit. It’s a treat!

    1. Hi Penny! I really like sausage too. I do enjoy the brab me - sometimes I warm and dip in butter and sometimes - like you - I just eat as is!

Wow. Our store never has markdowns like that. But since I found out that the good leftover Christmas stuff gets sent to another store, I suspect the same is true for most of the bulk food clearance. The only things I ever see in our meat clearance are the pre-kabobed stuff and expensive cuts of meat that are still over $10 lb. Hahahaha....

My go-to sale meats are pork loin and brisket. Both will go on sale for $1.99 and that's about the best I can do. They're delicious and versatile so it works. A local group is doing a smoked rib fundraiser this weekend so we ordered a slab. Definitely a yearly treat. Hubs goes crazy for them. I much prefer beef ribs so he eats the lion's share. I'm overnight cooking some baked beans in the crockpot to go with them. Yum!

    1. I like country ribs - Glen used to love all ribs.
Brisket is extremely expensive here - so that only happens once a year or so. Pork loin is a great find - so many things to do with it! Enjoy those ribs! YUM

  4. I never find those prices. Yea you!!!!

Ground pork I use for Eggroll in a Bowl. 2 bags of Coleslaw mix, 8ounce ground pork, fresh chopped onion, minced garlic, minced ginger, soy sauce and Sriracha to taste. 3 servings in 20 minutes!

No matter the recipe, if it's a single dish I double the veg and reduce the meat by 50% so that in itself cuts the meat cost by 50%. I'll play any game to get veggies down hubsters gullet ;-)

    1. Eggroll bowls - yummo. A favorite of mine too. I usually use sausage but that would be a great use for the pork.
We really do have some great markdowns on SOME stuff. Now beef or steaks - are still crazy expensive even after clearance pricing.

  5. Yum! My Dad gave me some ground pork one time and I used it in the egg roll in a bowl and it turned out really well. We love those cheddar smoked sausages too. They are delicious.

    1. They are delish aren't they? They go with anything. I love making a sandwich out of them (like hotdog) and loading them up.

  6. I have cut on sale pork loins into boneless chops and I love using the imitation crab or lobster in various dishes. As you say living in the heartland of our countries, really limits the fresh sea food.

    God bless.

    1. I have no problem with the imitation crab or lobster - it is still made from seafood. I loke it. The real stuff is soooooo costly.

  7. I live in Arizona and am bewildered when the stores advertise fresh fish….seriously? From the ocean to the boat, through processing, into a distribution center, trucked/flown to Arizona, then delivered to the store in Phoenix. Their definition of fresh I think means recently thawed out (exceptions for the live lobsters I see swimming in tanks). ;). Hilogene in Az.

    1. I do believe you are right! At the fresh meat counter at Kroger - if you read the sign closely - it says previously frozen in teeny tiny letters. Kind of mis-leading to me!

    2. Fish can be labeled FRESH if frozen within 24 hours of catch.

  8. I too am saying "WOW" on those prices. Sometimes I see a sale price, but usually it's $5 instead of $6. Maybe I need to check more closely? That's why I've about quit buying meat and only eat it maybe once a week. I've no idea what my store does with things that they are trying to move quickly.

I agree that sausage and hotdogs are tasty and very useful as main meat or part of soup, many ways. In the past we had good ground pork, but some years ago it changed and now is all "preseasoned" - and is perfectly nasty. :(

    1. I am very lucky to find the pricing I find. I do look hard for it - it isn't always right out front.
The ground pork here is strictly plain pork - no seasoning. I wouldn't like that either.

  9. Our local Co-op has the best sale prices on meat, so I tend to stock up then. I've found I prefer ground pork for taco meat - not such a big fan of how it smells when cooking, though I've learned to cook some onions in the pan first, which helps.
I don't eat as many sausages as I'd like because most prepared sausages are very high in salt. But we do eat Johnsonville sausage once a week. (Hot Italian is our favorite).
Lean ground beef was on sale this week for $5.49/lb and that is probably the best price I've seen in a long time. I did buy a "family sized" package and broke it down into smaller packages for the freezer.

    1. I will have to try pork in tacos. I agree - pork always has a 'smell'. Used to really bother me. Johnsonville is really good, and yep it has salt. But heck a gal has to eat and it might as well be tasty!!!!
Glad you stocked on ground beef.

  10. I only buy marked down meat and I like all the ways you cook your hotdogs.

  11. I used to make a salad that my kids loved using imitation crab meat. It was just shredded meat, chopped celery, with a mayo, ketchup, Tabasco dressing served on a bed of shredded lettuce. I will have to try that again soon, thanks for the reminder.
I got some super marked down bags of cooked chicken a few weeks ago, it’s been interesting finding ways to use that up. Frugal eating is all about being open and inventive. Louise

    1. Hmmm - that sounds tasty. Kind of like shrimp cocktail!
I like cooked chicken on chef salads or over mashed potatoes with some gravy. Chicken tacos or maybe a wrap.
Yep - love trying new things.

    2. Yep, exactly like a shrimp cocktail, the kids used to think we were super fancy when we ate that. It is a nice salad to have on a hot evening.

  12. I love sausage but a lot don't have any flavor (spices) to me. About the only brand we ever buy is Swaggerty and that's because it has spices it. I know Glen used to get onto you about not eating fat.... at least that's what he told me. It's funny how people will say they don't like fat and then eat bacon which, in a lot of cases, is at least 50% fat. I've always like bacon better than ham and now it's more expensive than ham. I know this is kinda off topic but when I was a kid they would essentially give you chicken wings and now they're the most expensive part of a chicken for the amount of meat you get.

    1. I have never had that brand. I do love me some bacon!!! I don't have it often - but I do love it. I got a great deal a while back and have plenty in the freezer!
I still do not like fat on my meat - like fat on pork chops or steak. NOPE! Can't do it. Bacon is another story!
You are so right about chicken wings. Used to be the 'scrap' parts of chicken - now everyone wants them, and they are super expensive. Glen loved wings - I never understood it. There just isn't much on them. If I want meat - I want meat!!!

  14. Hi, Cheryl. I'm alive and well, just a worn out piece of ham. Poppy has been getting us up in the night and Blue starts barking at about 5 a.m. Yesterday hubs and I rearranged some furniture in the house, then went to pick up 2 new-to-us refurbished dressers It took 3 trips to get it all here and we have 6 steps up leading to the porch, so even with a dolly it was heavy and difficult. We're finally getting the whole house fully put together. More on that on Sunday.

On topic, though... I like and have used your ideas, haven't found prices that low on sausage in many years and haven't seen any ground beef under $2.99 in quite awhile. What I find stretches my meat dollars the most is learning how to be my own butcher. There are You Tube videos that can help when you're learning.

Also, use meat as part of the meal vs. the bulk of the meal. Dollar General has their own brand (Clover Valley) of frozen chicken strips in 25 oz. bags; a few of those prepared as directed can be chopped up to top a meal sized salad. Use the 4% off $25 coupon on Saturday, pick up a few bags with whatever else you need to get to $25 and it's a good deal that can make many salad meals.

This week's Safeway flier came in the mail today. I was surprised there aren't any major sales on meats with the holiday weekend coming up. I'll check the online ads tomorrow for Basha's.

    Until tomorrow, then... --Elise

Good deal with the coupon at the dollar store. I noticed that too on sales this week. Seems like last week was the week for sales here.

    3. Basha's does have better deals this week for AZ shoppers, including (beef) ground round at $2.47 lb., and pork ribs for $1.77 lb.. Seedless watermelon is 19 cent lb. There are digital coupons for Best Foods mayo (20-30 oz.) $2.99 and fresh strawberries (16 oz.) for 99 cents; both are a limit of 2. Friday through Monday they'll have Villa Roma sausage (Italian, 16 oz.) for $1.99 ea., b/s chicken breast at $1.99 lb., and avocados for 75 cents each.

  16. I try to get meat the cheapest I can with $1.99 the price I want or less. I cannot abide fat, either. I use ground pork for taco soup. I tried ground beef in it, but I did not like it. I stay away from sausages, but Tommy loves them with cheese in them. Chicken breast is the meat I should eat because of my allergies.
