Happy Tuesday

 Good morning all.  Even though I am retired and all the days blend together - for some reason I get all discombobulated when there is a Monday holiday!  I have no idea why.
I hope each of you had a nice weekend and got to spend time with family and friends.  That you got to enjoy whatever festivities your areas had.  Remembered and reflected.  Rested.


I got up early this morning, and sat and watched a family of racoons running around the backyard.  They are very pretty - but I would just as soon not have them show up here.  They finally climbed the back fence and went back to the wooded area a couple doors down on the other side of the alley.
I have started removing all food sources that I put out for squirrels, before dark now.
Good golly - you never know what you will see here in the city.

It looks like 'maybe' we might get a little rain later this afternoon.  We could sure use it, it has been 10 days without any.  May is usually our wettest month - not this year!  It will be nice to not water the plants.  LOL - good grief - only had the garden out for days and here I am complaining about watering!!  Just no satisfying some of us is there?  hehe
It is going to finally become summer this week!  We are supposed to be in the upper 80's and around 90 all week long.  I guess I have done good with no AC until now!  I am sure it will come on some this week.  Right now the windows are open.

I guess I am still in weekend mode - and don't have much gumption this morning.  I will get back to regular posting of goodies tomorrow.
I think I will go out and work in the garage a bit before it gets too hot.  Today is going to be a puddle around day.

  1. I know just what you mean about being discombobulated after a holiday. Today feels like Sunday, not Tuesday, to me.

  2. Feeling the same way right now. And, we've been short on rain, as well. I've been lugging the watering can from the kitchen every morning to keep my deck planters from dieing off a week after planting. I don't know that we'll get any rain until late in the week. Stay hydrated and comfy in the heat this week!

      I know - I have been using the can with what rain water I have and the soaker hose. Got to keep them young plants going!

  3. When I was working, I was always ready for a holiday and sad to resume daily life. Now that we are retired it seems we are busier than ever. A fellow who lives down the street comes by to walk with the Farmer occasionally and he is 83. Doesn't seem to have any hobbies or activities, just sits and watches TV for the most part. We grouse about all the work we do in the gardens but it is sure better than sitting at a computer or watching mindless television.

    Off to pick up Rx from Costco, get chicken feed at Rural King, check for perennial salvia at Lowe's and make a quick stop at Meijer. The Avon area has just about everything a person could need or want.

    It was bound to turn hot sooner or later. We still haven't turned on the A/C. Enjoy your day!

    1. Funny - some retire and stay busy, others seem to give up. It is really sad. I do have down time - but prefer being active.

    Any schedule change throws me for a loop! Hubs had Fri off, too so I'm a real mess lol. We finally got some rest yesterday. Ribs and my baked beans were delicious, and we finished the meal with salad and a popsicle. The PBS concert was great, as well.

    We're really needing the rain. We thought we might get lucky yesterday, but it went the southern route. All the flowers look so pretty. I went with yellow and white this year.

    My Sunday post was so long that I left out my reading.
    On my nightstand - The Whispering Statue, a Nancy Drew.
    In my craft room CD player - Colorblind, a Jesse Stone.
    With my Bible study - Beautiful in God's Eyes by Elizabeth George.
    By my reading chair - Executive Power, a Mitch Rapp.

    Yup, I started my bedtime summer reads. I always look to read books from my youth and Ill be on Nancy Drews for awhile! I'm on #14. I don't have all of them, but I do have quite a few.

  5. Good morning Cheryl! Here in sunny Arizona the mornings are beautiful….67 right now at 6:30 am as I type this. By mid summer, the low will be 90 so most of the town is out taking morning walks right now ;). Hope you get some rain! I went to the Veterans cemetery yesterday, it was lovely with all the American flags on each gravesite. Spent a bit of time with my husband, then came home. I was wishing that the area had grass instead of gravel but we do live in a desert. Overall it was a lovely Memorial Day and I was glad to see so many people remembering that the day was all about.       Enjoy those cool mornings while you can.
      Glad you got to spend some time at the cemetery. It always does me good to sit down and just talk a while! I plop myself down in the grass and have a conversation! Hugs.

  6. I've had my a/c running already and will again today, as the contractors are here. With a high of 28C (82F), and the guys running in an out of the house to the saws, it's going to get warm. I keep it set at 24C(76F) but I'm sure the guys appreciate it being a bit cooler in the house.
    As for watering, I'd far rather Mother Nature do it too. It costs me less! :)

  7. I have our windows open this morning too. It’s such beautiful weather and I love not having the air conditioning on because of the noice and the savings on the electric bill. Ugh on the raccoons in your yard. We bring in our cat and chicken food in at night for that reason too. Oh, and possums and bears included. 😂

      Yep, darn critters. I don't mind the possums. No bear! Just wish the racoons would go elsewhere. I am truly surprise the folks a few doors down in the alley, don't have problems. They have chickens that just run in the yard! I walked down that way this AM - and their privacy fence has loose boards!

  8. Good *Tuesday* morning, Cheryl. Yes, I always get discombobulated, too, after a holiday weekend. Amelia shared something on her blog (My Forest Cathedral) over the weekend and I hope she doesn't mind if I share it here...

    It's a GOOD thought for the day, don't you think? This morning is sunny and warm in my corner of the world. Tall, native grasses have gone to seed and the morning sunlight is making the seed heads sway and glisten with the breeze.

    Blue was just barking fiercely at a wild bunny in the yard. Poppy didn't understand what all the fuss was about. She gets her 2nd round of vaccines this morning and we'll see how much she's grown. Poppy used to be able to crawl under the LR loveseat to hide from her big sister when play got too rambunctious. This morning she found that nearly impossible. The two of them make me laugh. And that's also a GOOD thing.

    Wishing everyone here a very GOOD week ahead... just tune out the ugly noise and enjoy the start of summer. --Elise

      I bet it is pretty in your area. Oh that sweet Poppy! She has obviously grown a bunch! Sounds like they have a grand time together.

    2. Poppy did well for her quick Vet visit. She's doubled in size/weight since she arrived at my side door; just about 10 lbs. now. Healthy. Happy. She napped with me afterwards.

      P.S. As I rarely do, I wrote a formal letter to the CEO of a retailer today and will mail it tomorrow. It won't matter to him, I'm sure, but it can be personally cathartic.

  9. Very hot here this week, and we need rain, too. I have about enough rainwater left to water the vegetable beds for a couple of days before having to use city water. Finally got my flowers that I started from seed planted in the front flower bed this morning. I have to say this is the sorriest looking flower bed I've had in a long time. I'd like to eventually make it all perennials, but that takes time and money.
    Husband has been pretty weak and somewhat confused the past three days. The long-awaited doctor appt is tomorrow. I sure hope they can adjust his meds to get him back to normal. My anxiety kicked in to overdrive on Sunday and I gave in and had a good cry after he went to bed. Just trying to take it one moment at a time.

  10. I managed to get to the garden shop at the end of last week. Oh my! Plants are much higher. I changed what I was going to get so I could less expensive plants and not overspend. I tried growing from seed last summer and wasn't successful. But I'm going to have to give it another try.

    Frances, I'm thinking of you. I hope the dr appointment goes well and hubs feels better soon.

    1. Yes, plants have gone up this year. I bought much smaller plants in 4 packs, vs. bigger singles. Some things are easy to start from seed, others not at all!

  12. Raccoons ar cute but they can become a real nuisance. Animal control might be called to catch them and relocate.

  13. I have to agree with you about getting out of sync after holidays/ long weekends.
    Retirement really suits some, but not others. My partner tried it, he missed the personal contact with others, I would find him out on the curb chatting away to strangers. It took him a while to admit it and then decided to not return to work, but not be retired. He found something that suited and now he is much much happier, certainly for him giving up work cold turkey didn’t work out.
    This week I will be buying a new slow cooker. Mine was a huge early 80’s monster that I bought at a yard sale for $2 at least 20 years ago. Over the weekend it died and it made me kind of sad, thinking about all the meals it made. Getting attached to kitchen appliances!! I must be going mad!!! Louise

    1. Yes, a lot of people just can not cope with retirement. Me - I have nooooo problem!!!
      Well, I would say you got your moneys worth out of it! Isn't that something. They aren't cheap now - good luck getting one. I think we get used to something and figure it will always be there!

    2. Louise, I'm on my 5th Crock Pot, but some of that has to do with damage during moves. It's okay to be attached to your kitchen appliances. :-)

    3. Cheryl, I think that means you are more adaptable to change. Not wanting to start a gender war, but I think GENERALLY, women are better at change than men. Or at least that’s been my experience.
      And yes you are correct, I have definitely had my money’s worth from it. Would you believe it was still in the box when I bought it? It looked like an unused wedding gift.

      Elise, thank you for understanding. I’ve just had it so sooo long, and it’s moved a few times too. It was so heavy that I could only keep it in a certain cupboard because I was unable to lift it from too low it too high, but geez it’s done some heavy lifting of its own. It’s cooked thousands of meals. Imagine what I will be like when my coffee percolator finally goes !!!!!

    4. I actually cried when my perfectly seasoned cast iron cookware was left behind when we moved from Texas 30 years ago, Louise. Still have the blender we got as a wedding gift 38 years ago, and a thrift store food processor from about 26 years ago, though. I've slowly collected cookware that's older than me and have the full set of Magnalite by Wagner Ware now. One skillet is about 100 years old. I love to think of all the meals its made over a lifetime (or two!!). --Elise
