Useful Information

I hope that many of you will find the following charts useful and helpful.
There are so many varieties of fruits and veggies out - there is no way for any one of to know about all of them.
Hope these help!!!

Click on picture to enlarge.  There are so many varieties available this time of the year.  I know we all have our favorites - but this may give you a new idea.

Again, it's that time of the year - so many options.
I truly don't think I have found an apple or a squash that I didn't like!

I just love this time of the year for all the goodies that we an get.  Remember that winter squash can be kept for months in a cool, dark and dry place in your home.  Get them when the prices are good, and eat well all winter.
Make sure you check your local orchards and farm markets for apples - if you d the math - it is generally cheaper to buy fresh from the orchard (fresher too).

Make like a squirrel and get these fall goodies while the getting is good!  Stock up and store for the winter.  According to the way these little critters are acting (and the birds) it may be a cold one!!!!!
I do believe that sometimes 'nature' is much smarter than we are!!!

Enjoy the bounties of the fall harvest!

  2. Thanks so much for this post - I enjoy each of them but this answered a major dilemma for me. What to do with celery. I used to cook and eat it raw so much it never had a chance to spoil. Now at 83, I still cook for myself, but now I don't so I've been throwing it out much to my dismay. Thanks for that tip especially - I do almost all of the other things.
My question today is: Due to dealing with a minor health issue this past week I just opened a 1 qt container of 2% milk. I knew the expiration date said 10/19/19 which is tomorrow. I've never concerned myself because I either freeze milk and other foods or they generally last longer than the date stated. This milk had already turned. Since I no longer drive any ideas on how to use it? (Back in the day I would have jumped in the car and returned it!) I really hope I don't have to throw it out. Thanks so much! Shirley

    1. I am glad you were excited to post. It all gets read - so it doesn't matter where you put it!

I would say use the milk for biscuits or pancakes or waffles. Maybe if you make yogurt or bread. Biscuits, pancakes and waffles can all be wrapped and frozen as well - so you could keep and use as you needed. You could also freeze in cubes to use in 'cream of' soup or gravies later.

Hope you feel better and get past the heath issues quickly.
      Have a good day!

  5. I think co coya above may be a spammer... I keep getting comments from that person too. I need to try more winter squashes. We didn't grow up eating things like that, so I am pretty limited to what I know about them.

  6. Good to know on the apples and squash! I love planting different squash! Once I planted Hubbard squash and I didnt keep an eye on it. One day there was like these basketball size squash out there!! I went to pick the last of the eggplant the other day, the plant was eated way down and no eggplants what so ever. Seems one of the cows beat me to it!! I'm still trying to get all my tomatoes canned up. The tips on tuesday were helpful, I have one. Bananas last longer sealed in a plastic bag. The key is to keep them sealed! I also need to try the candy recipes! Thanks for all the good advise!

  7. The apples are so much cheaper at the orchard this year. I've already bought from them twice this fall. I love any kind of apple, although the Arkansa Black apple is very hard!

    1. I have never heard f that apple. We like crisp, tart and sweet (if that makes sense) and juicy apples.
Of course you are farther south - so may be something we don't see here.
      Have a good one!

  8. Thank you for this post, most useful. Recently, on my blog, I posted how I was perplexted that people would visit but no comment and then I realized that I do the same thing! so, I am making sure I comment when I visit, if only with a "hi". I do enjoy your blog and read it regularly so, if you see a "hi" in the comments, you will know it was me.

    1. Thanks. I am guilty of that as well - read and don't comment every time. It is amazing when you check your views - it's usually quite a big number. That makes me smile - even if no one says anything.
Glad you enjoyed the post and found it useful.

Looks forward to seeing you again. Have a good one.

  9. I will add one thing. Golden delicious apples are good to dry. When they are cut they don't turn brown so no ned to put them into lemon to keep them white. They also stay white after drying without any help. I think there is another one that does this too but not sure of which one right now. Best applesauce to me is to use several different kinds in the same batch. We like chunky canned applesauce with no sugar. I do though can some in half pint jars or even smaller ones that I make very creamy smooth in the blender before canning. I mainly use those to use as a substitute for fat or eggs in recipes. Or for a visiting baby to eat. ! :-) Sarah
