Couple More Kitchen 101 Ideas

Today will be a couple more K101 ideas.  Just basics - but helpful.
Summer is coming upon us, and we can all use new ideas for food and drink. I hope this inspires someone!

I love this!!!  I make myself a lot of sparkling water with the soda stream.  This is a great way to add some flavor.  I like just a hint of flavor.  This would also be great for iced tea - I am thinking lemon or orange flavored Kool-Aid.  Just add a cube or two to a glass of your favorite cool drink!

Fresh fruits and veggies are a go to in the summer.  This is a refrigerate vs. don't refrigerate list.
I am OK with the refrigerate side - BUT I DO refrigerate apples, oranges, cucumbers and peppers.  I have a problem with those items going bad too quickly if not refrigerated.
I NEVER put a tomato in the frig.  I remember Mom would sometimes put a plate of leftover sliced tomatoes in the frig and I wouldn't touch them (and I LOVE tomatoes).  It sure did change the flavor in my opinion.
Do you agree with the lists?

Oh my, this is surely one of my favorite things.  Lettuce is a great spring/early summer garden food and this is just one more way to use it.  Everything is better with bacon!!!!!
I don't usually add egg or radish, but may try that.  YUM!

Hopefully this gives you an idea or two.
ENJOY!

  1. I put tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, apples and peaches in the fridge. Carrots don't have to go in the fridge if you are keeping them for long term storage. When I go apple picking in the fall I wrap most of the apples in newspaper and store in my cool basement. They last for months that way. A few go in the fridge because I like them cold.

    1. I have kept apples in the basement for long term - but I like them cold to eat. If peaches are getting too ripe, then I will put in frig. I am still a nope on tomatoes in the frig!!!! LOL - that is just me.

  2. I always put cucumbers in the fridge they go bad too quickly here in the heat. Can't wait for my first off the vine tomato.

    1. Same here - even with A/C on. A warm fresh tomato sounds so good. My mouth waters thinking of it.

  3. I frequently refrigerate apples because it keeps them crisper (can't abide a mushy apple), and sometimes refrigerate an avocado if I think it is going to ripen too quickly. I also keep garlic and ginger in crisper drawer; other than that, I pretty much go by that list. I'm with you on the cold tomatoes; they're just not the same. I'm going to try the kool aid ice cubes; I drink a bunch of sparkling water and that will add some interest.

    1. Also cucumbers in fridge; they go bad very quickly otherwise.

    2. I don't eat avocados, but most people I know leave them out unless getting too ripe - like you do.
I love the ice cube idea too. I put some fruit punch ones in the freezer today!

  4. The Kool aid ice cubes sound like a great idea. I need to drink more water, and I think the flavors would help.
I'm with you, I don't like refrigerated tomatoes. I think that is why I don't like store bought tomatoes. Need to get my tomato plants in the garden so I can enjoy fresh maters.
I do refrigerate most of the other fruits though, except bananas.
Oh I love wilted lettuce. Yep bacon makes everything taste better. ;)

    1. I have a few tomato plants - just need to get them planted. Love a fresh tomato!
I have heard people keep bananas in the frig - supposedly the skin really darkens, but they stay fresh. I keep mine out, so I don't know for sure.
Yep, love bacon. Wilted lettuce is so yummy.

  5. I sent the Koolaid idea to my daughter - I think my 2 year grandson would get a kick out these ice cubes.

I do refridgerate apples, oranges, cucumber, peppers, tomatoes and garlic. Maybe that's why I'm not such a fan of the tomatoes we get in the store as I didn't realize they shouldn't be put in the fridge.

The lettuce salad sounds great...who doesn't like bacon? Note what takes priority!!!

    1. I like the Kool-Aid idea for even adults. Too much fun.
I think that may have something to do with people not liking some tomatoes. Refrigeration does change a chemical compound in them. They taste much better at room temp.
Exactly - BACON - it's good with just about everything!

  6. My mother always made that wilted lettuce salad. I never had it because I thought it was weird - what do kids know??!! Lol

Thanks for posting the recipe - I will definitely make it

    1. I like a lot of things as an adult that I "didn't like" as a kid. Now I am willing to try things.
I hope you like it - it really is fantastic.

  7. I love the Kool aid idea. I've frozen berries and mint into ice cubes so I shoulda thought of this! My friend in Montana did a fun thing with her kids in winter that this reminds me of. On a frigid night, they would fill balloons with water and food coloring and put them out to freeze overnight. The next morning they'd peel off the balloon and put the colored ice balls all over the front yard for decorations. He said they're fun to watch melt, as well. I wonder if you could make a tie dyed front yard!

    1. Oh my, what a cute idea. That would be adorable to see. I bet the kids had fun with it as well.
I have frozen grapes in cubes as well as wine. That is a good way to keep a glass of wine cold!

  11. Another one for "No Tomatoes in the Fridge!" Club. For example, I love gazpacho, but can't stand it cold from the fridge. Room temperature tastes best!

  12. I think I'd rather use cabbage for that recipe than lettuce!
