It is rainy and chilly here today. I sure wish the weather would get and STAY warmer! They are calling for frost the next 2 mornings!! Last year on Mother's Day it was almost 90*!
I did buy a few plants this week - but not putting out veggies for a few days - not taking a chance with frost. Nights should maintain 50* for good planting here. Looks more like end of the week will be better.
Many flowers are starting to bloom. I have columbine blooming, and the poppies are starting to pop open. My clematis has lots of big buds. The peonies are covered with buds as well. Leaves are coming on the grape arbor.
I put my hummingbird feeder on the 3rd and finally saw my FIRST baby of the season on the 10th. Just one - but it is a start. Still awful chilly at night around here.
- I did some yard work the first part of the week. Got the pampas grass all cut back, and did mowing and some trimming. So much to do (just not a lot of gumption to do it).
- No heat all week - until yesterday morning. The house was downright chilly, so I turned it on for one cycle. Same this morning. House holds heat well. Rest of the week the windows were open and the house got lots of fresh air.
- I had to order more checks from the bank - no charge for seniors! Can't remember the last time we ordered checks. Glen did everything online - not me!
- Gave my neighbor a couple cans of coffee - I don't drink it, so someone should get use.
- Donated to "feed the hungry" Post Office food drive yesterday
- Went through a LOT more paperwork
- I received a pretty wreath from a friend in Colorado. It is on my front door in honor of Glen
- I patched 4 pairs of old jeans - which will be great for just bumming around in
- I did more cleaning - some regular that has been neglected last couple weeks and more deep cleaning
- I cooked up a pound of ground beef into taco seasoned - used in a few meals
- I ran to Big Lots one rainy day - just to get out of the gloomy house. I got a couple deals. I found 2 - 3 1/2 pound bags of cat food marked at .50 each and 2 - bottles of shampoo for .50. Super deal for sure.
Simple meals this week:
Homemade bean/cheese/ salsa burrito
Mac n cheese topped with a little taco meat
Soft tacos
Cheesy baked potato topped with last of the taco meat
Tuna patty and leftover mac
Homemade small pizza
This and that - finished all leftovers
How was your week?
Taking things one day at a time and trying to move forward. I finally got all the paperwork I need to move forward on some financial things. Things sure are different. I guess the only thing that is consistent in life - is change!
I pray that each of you have a great, healthy and safe week. I do love all my friends here. I saw a prayer in the paper the other day I'd like to share.
"Show us, O God, how to simplify our lives. Focus us on what is essential to live a life of love. Help us to let go of the rest. Amen."
Blessings from my humble little home and world to yours.
God bless you all.
I am happy you are staying busy. It was 90 here yesterday and I was loving it! Happy Mother's Day to you also and know I think of you often.
ReplyDeleteTrying to keep myself busy. Have to! Wow - 90? It is only in the 50's here today.
DeleteHappy Mother's Day

DeleteToday is our first sunny day in ages. We got the night frosts too. Strange weather!
ReplyDeleteI saw a new bird on Thursday. I had to get my KS bird book. Turns out he's not a regular to our part of the state. A Bullock's Oriole. My goodness, he was stunning! Nearly a neon orange, black, & white.
I only spent about $20 at the market this week. Mostly produce and dairy. Since the cool weather lasted so long, I got a couple of winter staples I ran out of like diced tomatoes, frozen mixed veggies, and hot chocolate mix!! Who would think I'd be making pots of chili bad beef barley soup at this time of year!? I'm not a summer soup eater. I don't even care much for any warm foods when it's hot. We're gonna warm a little this week so I'm hoping to make one last shepherd's pie.
Meals last week were:
Baked ziti
BLT & A salad
Chili
Pulled pork sandwiches (from freezer)
Macaroni and cheese
Chicken tacos
Love the wreath. It's so pretty and such a sweet gift.
I tried crocheting a dish rag. It's completely functional but is the saddest looking thing you'd ever see!!
Hi Debby.
DeleteThe bird sounds incredibly beautiful. What a treat that had to be.
I am the same way - soups and stews happen only in cold weather. Then there is that - we still have cold weather!
Your menu sounds yummy to me.
Who care how the dishrag looks as long as it works. Practice makes perfect.
Have a good one.
I am so jealous of your humming bird as we don't get them here. Yes one day at a time is best. The wreath is beautiful. A simple life is best.
ReplyDeleteWow, I figured every where had humming birds at some point in time. They are just little flying jewels.
DeleteI love the wreath as well. I will display it proudly.
Yes, we all need to simplify.
Blessings
Happy Mother's Day. The wreath is very nice. You got great deals, cat food for 50¢ is wonderful. I don't have a cat but I would have grabbed those for the food pantry. The seniors on assistance are always asking for food for their pets. It was 70 degrees yesterday and 45 degrees today. I hope we all don't get sick. Now we will have rain for the next 4 days. Have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteI know that was crazy on the cat food. If they had a bunch more I would have gotten to help others out.
DeleteIt is chilly here but 80's by the end of week. Up and down.
Have a good one.
Just found your blog and wanted to say I am so very sorry for the loss of your dear sweet husband. May God give you the strength and comfort that you need as you go forward...and I know He will. From one Cheryl to another...God bless you.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! God is my stronghold. I hope you stick around as things get back together on posting.
DeleteMy nieces and nephews all call me Cheri too!
Blessings
Hi Cheryl
ReplyDeleteYour wreath in honor of your husband is very pretty.
I hope it makes you smile when you come home from running your errands.
What a deal on the cat food. Wonder why it was so cheap? Was the bag torn and taped up? I sometimes find great deals on boxed cereal where the boxes are smashed and my main grocery store puts them on the crash & burn shelf.
Thank you for your prayer for us, your readers. You are so kind -especially with your own sadness- to think of us.
Take care
Debra
Debra the cat food was a few days from being dated with the "best by" date. I don't think my kitties will care!
DeleteI love my readers and they hold me up. Blessings
My heart is hurting for you! Please know my family has been praying for you in Missouri.
ReplyDeleteBless you and thank you so much. I truly can feel all the love and prayers.
DeleteI continue to think of you and was happy to see your post. It's been such a long chilly spring here in Neb. that I can't really wrap my head around that fact it's the middle of May. We are simplifying our year. We have a lot going on and much of it is stressful. I'm not putting in a garden and we are allowing ourselves to just "be" on those Sundays when we can. (like today) One of the processes of getting older I guess. We are enjoying the time spent on the phone or in person with our children & grands and with our dear friends. Those are precious.
ReplyDeletePraying for a good week for you.
I think the older we get the more we need to simplify,
DeleteIt is hard to believe it is May - I agree.
Hoping you enjoy your summer and have less stress. Thank you for your kind words.
Have a good week.
Your wreath is so special for Memorial Day coming up. I'm sure your hubby would've loved it too. Hoping the financial handling will get easier as you get used to doing it again. Life goes on here in Texas. Enjoy that sunshine!
ReplyDeleteEach day I figure out a bit more. Learning process all over again.
DeleteBlessings to you.
The wreath is so pretty and perfect for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.
ReplyDeleteOur weather was in the high 80's and sunny the last two days. Rain and temps in the low 60's starting tomorrow and continuing for the next ten days. Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind around here.
I think of you often and enjoy your postings. God Bless!
Suzanne
No Mother Nature can't decide. It is frustrating.
DeleteThank you for your thoughts.
Have a good one
I sure admire you! This all has to be so hard. Glad to see you are eating and getting out a little. One day at a time. Our dear Lord provides always. Hope you are feeling that love daily!
ReplyDeleteI so look forward to your posts and consider you a special friend that adds lots to my life. Thank you!
Aaahh Linda thank you. It is hard, but it has to be done. Glen would want me to get on with things. I am trying.
DeleteGod lifts me daily as do all my wonderful friends!!!!!
Thank you and have a blessed week.
I think you are doing so well, Cheryl. I am sure it hits you at some points and almost brings you to your knees. I also know that you are a strong person and are doing what needs doing and moving forward as best you can....and honoring Glen as you know he would want you to move forward. Love to you- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThank you - such kind words. Yes there are those moments often.
DeleteI appreciate the love and concern.
I love that wreath Cheryl. So nice of a remembrance.
ReplyDeleteYou are keeping busy and I think that's a good thing.
I enjoy when you share you previous weeks meals...I need ideas!
Have a good week. I think about you often.
Trying to keep busy - some days I just want to curl up in bed.
DeleteMenus aren't that fancy any more. Maybe I will get back to cooking more later.
Thanks. Have a great one
We only have one hummingbird this year. Last year we had two. Maybe the squirrels scare them?? I don't know. Glad to hear you were busy this week. I know each day is especially lonesome and you miss your dear hubby so. Still praying for you!
ReplyDeleteSo far I have just seen the one - once. Hopefully we get 2 - 4 like usual. I love watching them.
DeleteTrying to keep busy. I need the continued prayers, so thank you so much.
Have a good day
Cheryl, I've thought about you a lot lately. My husband and I are not spring chickens I'm pushing 71 and he is 75 and still working. We are on an 80 acre farm. We longer have animals, but the back pasture land is rented out for cattle. It takes him all day on Sunday to mow the grass around here to keep the bugs and snakes at bay. I love the area here, but find myself wondering if I would be able to keep this place up with only SS as a back up. It's a scary situation that most women don't think about ahead of time. I know that I alone could live much more cheaply, but...... We have 3 children. The oldest daughter lives in Wisconsin, The 2nd daughter lives in Arkansas (we live in SW Missouri). Our son lives with us, but..... It seems there would be a lot of buts in my life should my husband die suddenly. sorry, but your past posts just brought to the surface what I've been secretly thinking for quite awhile. I guess if my grandmother lived alone in her own house until she was 101, I certainly can manage. But thinking and planning are essential. I will think and pray for you often! God bless you!
ReplyDeleteYES MAM!!!! You are absolutely correct. Everyone needs to plan ahead and consider everything!!!! I can manage here - house is not large, decent yard, savings and income. It is very scary to think about the future.
DeleteOnce I get in a better 'head' space I plan on posting about planning and being prepared for such loss.
I am glad you are thinking about things and maybe planning. We just never know what the next moment might bring.
Blessings.
Glad your hummingbird showed up, and I hope she tells all her friends. Are your squirrels still eating out of your hand? Won't your flowers be beautiful when they are all in bloom. I hope nature brings you some comfort and peace.
ReplyDeleteYour wreath is lovely. Great deals too. Thank you for sharing the prayer.
I hope the hummy brings others as well. Yes the squirrels are just so cute and run up to me when I go out. Even my neighbor is getting them to come closer - so maybe he will be able to feed by hand as well.
DeleteI love seeing the flowers, birds, squirrels, kitties, and nature. It DOES bring joy! We all need to learn to appreciate all those little things more.
Have a great day.
Thinking of you & your furbabies. Your wreath is stunning. Yes, just one day at a time. One thing at a time. It will get done.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing deal you got on cat food. Ocean Mist is my favorite White Rain scent. I can't use the shampoo on my hair but I buy it for hand soap and body wash. I love that scent so much.
I had to turn the heat on too for a couple of cycles. Errand day every store I went to had the air conditioning even though it was cold outside. I was so cold when I got home. I know that is corporate decision when stores must turn on the air/heat for the seasons.
I think some stores decide that AC goes on on a certain DATE. It has nothing to do with actual temperature. I hate going into a store and just shivering - it is not a smart decision on their part. I feel for the poor workers that can't leave.
DeleteI use that shampoo a lot - only watered down. Usually get it at Dollar Tree - but half price is better. Those 2 bottles on top of what I have on hand with last me for ages.
Thank you for your thoughts,
Have a good one!
