Being a Good Steward

Today is the official Earth Day.  I feel confident that most people that are reading this, take care to be vigilant about taking care of the earth.  We need to be mindful and resourceful of everything we have.  Our earth is precious - it gives us a home - it gives us food - it gives us the beauty of nature.

We all know that we need to take care of it.  There are so many little things that we can do that just make good sense and that will make life better for all living things.

DON'T LITTER - this just makes me so angry.  So many people don't care.  Not only is it a disgusting and ugly thing, it is so disrespectful to others who really care.
It is also bad for tourism - if your town is trashy, how many will want to return?
Litter can be so harmful to wildlife.  Animals can get caught into various litter and die, they can eat things that are harmful.  Litter is just bad in so many ways.

Go out and pick-up litter when you see it.  It may not be your litter, but be the bigger person and pick it up.  Encourage businesses in your area to keep trash receptacles outside their businesses, that people can use.  Also encourage them to keep their commercial properties clean

Don't use so much packaging.  That just becomes trash and goes into our landfills.  Some packaging will takes years and years (if ever) to break down.

Plant indigenous plants and trees around your property.  They add back to the natural habitat of animals and insects and birds, they add oxygen to the air, and they help the actual earth.

Don't waste.  It takes a lot for food to get to your plate.  Collecting and harvesting seeds  or raising animals, farmers planting, taking care of the plants or taking care of livestock, butchering and harvesting, shipping, buildings to sell it, packaging....... my goodness there is so much involved.  PLEASE don't waste it.  Use in other ways or cook less or just buy less.

Be mindful of your utilities.  Don't waste water - it is precious.  Don't waste electricity or gas or oil.  These things make our life easier - but we should never waste them.  If you are not using - turn it off.

Please don't use chemicals on your lawn and yard.  We need these bees and other insects for pollination.  Without them - we do without.  Try not to use chemicals in your home as well - clean with natural products.  Remember whatever you put on your surfaces - you are putting into your skin and into the air you breath (and what we all breath).  You pets touch surfaces and breath the air and lick their paws - chemicals get into the little bodies.  The same with children - they touch everything and their hands are always in their mouths.

Recycle, reclaim and reuse everything you can.  It just makes sense. Our resources are limited and prices continue to rise - so use what you have in new ways.  Not only are you helping yourself, you are helping this planet.

Plan your trips out - be resourceful with your gasoline.  Car pool if possible,  Walk or bike if you have the ability - it is healthy exercise too.

If you have the ability to raise some produce - do it.  It is just a little less that you have to purchase.  IF you raise it, you know how it is raised.  No chemicals or garbage or preservatives in it.

Allow fresh air into your home whenever you can.  Everything in your home - from rugs to curtains and furniture - have chemicals in their construction.  They may be older - but the air should still be refreshed.  You circulate the same old air over and over with your heater and air conditioner - purge out the old air and allow fresh air in.  You will feel so much better.

There are a millions 'tiny' ways to help our planet and our lives.  Do whatever thing you can to help.  This is the world that future generations will have to use.

BE A GOOD STEWARD of this BIG OLD PLANET.

  2. I went for a walk to the river today, taking my litter picker stick and council rubbish sack. I filled it up and left it by a bin and will report it on the website then it will be collected tomorrow. There are lots of us in our town doing this. We are called Wombles. Don't know if you know what wombles are but it was a children's program years ago.

    1. I love it. Thank you for doing that and to all the other Wombles! I wish more people did that.
I do what I can - but our city doesn't do nearly as much as they should.

  3. Well said! One of my biggest pet peeves (besides mistreating animals and other humans) is the litter! It is so easy to pick up after ourselves and yet I see sooo much trash along the roadsides and highways. We pick up litter while walking, but I have to wonder, don't people have pride and respect in their environment?

    1. I wonder the same thing or are they just lazy? It is so disgusting. It is bad for our towns and cities, it is bad for wildlife, it is disrespectful of others.......I could go on and on.
It seems so many have no pride at all.

  4. Great post. I get upset when I see people wasting food, particularly animal products. Those animals lost their lives, probably in horrible conditions, to feed us,so please don't be so disrespectful of them. I see eggs tossed out just because sell by date is passed, and they're probably still good so think of the poor chickens! A rotten egg smells awful, you will know! I eat very little meat, and then only organic since less environmental destruction and it's kinder to the animals. Don't get me started on litter... I'll shut up now!! Celie

    1. I agree. Not only have animals died so we can eat, but it is just wrong to be wasteful. There are so many hungry people in this world, and that it is sad. Then we throw away food - just makes me sick when I think about it.

I am thrilled when I see stories about people rescuing food from landfills and behind stores to distribute to others. It may not be perfect - but it is still good. Stores should be ashamed when they throw away so much good food.

  5. I hate seeing litter on my walks as well. We only have one world and we need to take better care of it.

    God bless.

  6. Thanks for this post. Please people put your trash in the trash can. How hard can that be? Makes me so mad to see litter of any kind. My husband knows when we go for a walk I'm coming home with a trash bag full of trash. That's just how I am. And yes recycle any and everything you can. Our recycle bin goes out every other week full to the brim. As for food waste? Never. I got that from my grandpa. He hated food waste and so do I. So many little things we can do that add up to big things to help our planet.

    1. Good for you. I go out and clean the alley at least once a week. People just don't care and it is their neighborhood too. I just shake my head.
Yes each little act is huge if more and more people do it!
      Thank you

  8. The principal of the high school here walks across the parking lot and always picks up trash when he sees it. I love that about him.

  9. I think it's the spirit that lives in the person - whether they consider the world around them their pigpen to abuse as they see fit, or to care for it and even...improve it! DH picks up dog poop others have left behind as we walk our dog. I always tell him that if everyone were like him, we'd have a perfect world!

    1. Your hubs is a nice fellow. Yes, if everyone did a little something the world would be so much better. Kind of like doing and saying kind things - what a different world it would be.

  10. Another excellent post! The trash really gets to me. I have seen people put dirty diapers down on the parking lot by their car after they change their child's diaper. Now it's disposable masks and gloves. Makes you wonder what their homes look like.

    1. I have always heard that you can look at someone's car to see how their house might look. Yep, dirty diapers is awful - I mean who want to get out of the car to that. I see masks every where - some days it makes a person not like people a lot! Just nasty.

  11. Personally I think they should ban all plastic bags (Wm and grocery store) and paper masks and disposable diapers. I hate them all. I use my reusable cloth grocery bags including net produce bags. I get positive comments on the produce bags all the time. While I'm not in favor of masks, those who use them should use cloth and stores should stop providing paper. They are ending up as litter. And we old ones grew up in & using cloth diapers. Those things never disintegrate. In fact, I'm all in favor of cloth menstrual pads too. I've used them and they are not any worse than the diapers or underwear to launder. These are all pet peeves of mine.

    1. Kind of agree with you. I love using my cloth bags and mesh produce bags. I have cloth masks to use when I need to.
I have never had kids - but I know Mom only used cloth diapers with us (probably cause she had to). I do know a few young folks who use cloth.
We create so much trash - so much packaging and throw away stuff. Everything if cheaper to replace now than fix.
