Nature is the Best

 I have been asked about what I do for my health that is natural.  I do a lot of things - but will list a few today.  There are so many things that this earth gives us that is so very helpful for our health.  Our earth is awesome.  God has said that he has given us everything we need on the earth - I believe it.
I am not against conventional medicine, as I know many depend it and use it.  I - however - try to stay away from it.  We all use our judgement and have our own opinions. 
I am in no way trying to change someone's mind nor am I criticizing - so I hope everyone follows suit.

I eat lots and lots of carrots and beans.  Tomatoes have to be a favorite of mine.  Fresh fruits and veggies are just so healthy.  I like fresh as often as possible as we have not cooked anything out of it.  Ever tried eating fresh green beans or asparagus?  I love both!!!!  Sounds crazy - but I prefer the taste of fresh.  There are not many fruits and veggies I don't like.
I eat oranges or drink orange juice absolutely every single day - fresh Vitamin C!!!!!!  I do keep vitamin C around - just in case - but fresh citrus is just something I crave.

I keep honey around all the time.  IF I would start to get a sore throat - that is my go to.  A spoonful of honey soothes and heals the throat.  (honey has been used since Biblical days).  I take turmeric capsules every day and often times tart cherry capsules.  
There are certain foods like broccoli that are great for cancer patients.  They contain natural chemicals that boost immune system.  (Do your food research)
I use garlic and salt all the time as well as onion which is healthy.  I know many who swear by black coffee for migraines (or Coke which isn't natural) - it is the caffeine that helps I believe.
I sure have used cloves in the past for a toothache.  Boy does it numb!


Herbs and vitamins of all types are great for the body.  I keep Aloe Vera capsules, gel and juice on hand 100% of the time.  It is so very healing both inside and outside of the body.  If I am having belly issues - I drink the juice and take the capsules (have given to my cats as well) and I keep the healing gel on hand for skin abrasions of all sorts.  Healing time is minimal when using it.

I keep Echinacea & Goldenseal on hand always.  IF I start to feel like I am getting a cold or something, I start taking immediately and it never gets very far.  I use Echinacea once a day with my cats as well (outside cats).  Sometimes kitties get colds or get an infection - they heal in no time.  I sprinkle a little in their wet food and mix in.

I also keep and use CBD oil.  It truly helps.  It is an anti-inflammatory.  If I have over done it or just have back/muscle pain for whatever reason - I take it.  I use this on my Momma cat as well.  She sometimes gets inflamed gums (she is old) and this prevents it.  Again I sprinkle in wed food once a day.  Many people do give this to pets - especially older animals or big dogs that have hip problems.  It is amazing how well it helps.
I know some find CBD - voodoo medicine - but it works & it is natural.  When hubs was here - it made a tremendous difference in the pain he had in his back and legs (from sitting and not being able to walk).  He received so much relief.  I have sprained and strained muscles - and the relief was  wonderful and quicker healing.

I take Vitamin D3, Vitamin C (if I have no fresh citrus),  and Vitamin E every day.

I keep many other things on hand for occasional use IF I feel like I am getting ill in some way.  Reishi mushroom capsules are always in my herb cabinet - they help immune system.
I use fresh herbs from the garden and 'weeds' that are beneficial as well.
I grown thyme, chives, lemon balm (makes great calming tea), mint (great soothing on bellies).  I pick and use purslane in salads - then there is nettles, dandelion,  and many others.

Natural health aides is something everyone should look into.  I mean even modern day aspirin came originally from willow bark.  Our ancestors knew all the things to use.  The early people of our lands knew what to use, where to find it and how to use it effectively.  Then big pharma took over and started putting a lot of chemicals in our bodies - and we followed along.

I agree there are diseases that needed that big pharma fix - natural didn't help.  
Don't get me wrong I am not anti  medicine.  Not at all.  There are times and things that are necessary.

Take time to do some research - you may be amazed.  A healthy diet can make a world of difference to our every day lives - we each so much processed food/junk and that can't be good (we all do it).
There are many natural items that truly do offer relief.
I hope this answers a few questions, as to what I do.

  1. As a Registered Nurse AND believer/user of Eastern and alternative medicine, I encourage everyone to use a blend of all available modalities. Many aches/pains/problems can be treated without prescriptions and scalpels.

    I am a huge fan of acupuncture and massage. I've had regular massages since 1995. Biweekly when I worked and monthly since I retired. Best money EVERY spent! This was the self-care I will never give up. It's good to not love stuff and clothes and shopping 😀😀😀

      My Mom did acupuncture way back (in 80's) and it sure did her good. I used to go to a chiropractor years ago and boy did that work. I worked on my feet a lot back then - and my back was a mess.
      I would love a massage - may think about doing that for myself in the near future.

      The CBD I have purchased for many years now has been from Fresh Thyme Market - is is Plus +CBD Oil - usually get 15 mg - but recently got 25 mg as they didn't have 15's. PlusCBDoil.com is listed on the bottle.
      We also used to get CBD from Swanson's - it was very good.
      I got a lot of family started with taking it from the Swanson brand - and they all loved it too.

  3. This is so informational and fascinating - I love it, thanks, Cheryl! Our neighbors have a hyper Doberman and an older Mastiff with hip problems. Both dogs are treated with CBD oil. I love it that you help your kitties with the herbs or oils!
    I've heard that purslane is kind of a "super food". I must check into Lemon Balm.
    Yes, it's the caffeine that helps get rid of a headache - something about dilating the blood vessels, so blood oxygen can get to the brain faster....according to DH.
    I love the info in the two pictures you included as well as the pretty herb cabinet picture.

    1. Thanks Mary. I am a firm believer in the natural and using the gifts God gave us. I will do whatever is needed for my kitties to keep them healthy. Momma kitty is a good 12+ years old and she often acts like a youngster!!!!

  4. Excellent post, Cheryl! My grandmother was into herbal remedies and juicing long before either was accepted. I vividly remember sitting on her couch (mid '60s) and reading her copies of Mother Earth News and herbal prevention magazines. I also remember her telling us kids that, if we got a canker sore or had any tenderness inside our mouth, to chew up a couple of raisins and let them sit on the sore spot for a minute and it would cure it. Sure enough, it worked! I still use that remedy today.

  5. Great post Cheryl. I have to agree 100% with everything you said. Gargling with warm salt water is also good for your gums/sore throat and Elderberry juice is amazing. We have a neighbor that makes it and I swear by it. I've always believed that the right foods keep us healthy.

    1. I keep a water bottle of pink Himalayan salt and water mix in my bathroom for any irritation in my mouth. I used to have a lot of bleeding with my gums and the salt water rinse has stopped that. Salt is very healing - most people don't realize.
      Elderberry is wonderful if you can get it. I know many make their own.

    2. I learned about gargling salt water for a sore throat when I was in college. When your throat is sore, it's because the pH has gone off-kilter--the salt helps restore the proper pH.

      The BEST thing I do for myself is to drink a big glass of plain water when I first get up. I have to remind myself to drink water the rest of the day, but this happens every morning without fail. (I have tendency to get slightly dehydrated).

      Tea tree oil is great on cold sores--dries them right up. And arnica cream relieves pain.

      I take a multivitamin, calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. I'm in bed with Big Pharma for my high blood pressure and major gut issues, but two pills at age 75 is probably on the low end.

    3. water is so smart - most people do not drink any where enough water. I love cold, cold water!! I can down it in nothing flat.

      Yes mam, I would say you are on the low end for sure. 2 pills at 75 is pretty darn good. I have heard many people say that changing eating habits and what they eat and when they eat can also change so much in intestinal/gut area as well.

    4. Cheryl, I always enjoyed cold water, but I've found that I drink more if it's just out of the tap. Seems to go down easier. I've been told--not sure if it is true or not--that warm water helps with elimination.

  6. I am with you 100%! Black coffee is also beneficial for an asthma attack. It really does help calm and open the lungs. We have been alternative medicine and no prescription drugs for many years. I have no health insurance but it does no bother me one bit because I can treat just about anything that comes along with essential oils or herbs. Hopewelloils.com has a ton of beneficial information on their site but you must create an account to access it. Also we swear by all of the Christopher's formulas which you can find on Amazon or Vitacost. They really work. I have been shot down over and over for leaving this in a comment on other blogs but the coronavirus is easily treated with lavender essential oil. It must be from a reputable source like Hopewell to work but applying it the bottoms of the feet three times a day for three days will take care of it. The common cold is a coravirus as well and it only takes one application on the bottoms of the feet to take care of it. I have seen for sure that those who eat the most veggies and fruits and salads have had the best chance of coming through the virus. My aunt who died from it was a meat and potatoes and bread eater as well as a childhood friend who lost the battle.

    Another huge thing for good health is keeping the pH of the body neutral or alkaline. You can buy test strips for your saliva and if it needs correcting there is a lot of good information on the web. Cancer and infections cannot grow in a body that is alkaline!

    One big American habit to ditch is sunglasses. Your pituitary gland needs sunlight through the eyes to work. It controls every gland in the body so think what happens when you shut it down!

    Some alternative practitioners believe that 80% of disease can be healed by just drinking enough water every day. Half your body weight in ounces is the right amount.

    1. Lana I want to take this moment to say I will not knock anyone for there ideas and methods on treating anything. That being said - folks this is my blog - so PLEASE do NOT knock anyone for their beliefs. We each have them and are entitled to them.

      Herbs, oils and food are huge in daily life. I only wear sunglasses (now) because I have cataracts and the light does react with them and changes my vision. I am also taking some herbal things for my eyes, but will have to probably have surgery for them.
      What we put in our bodies can make a lot of difference. Yes, our bodies are mainly water - so we must stay hydrated.

      I started doing research on food back when my sister had cancer in the early 90's. I could not get her to do things I knew would help and no one (I repeat no one) will ever convince me that she died of anything other than chemo poisoning. She was holding her own and doing OK and that wasn't good enough for the doctors and they doubled her dose of chemo and within 5 days she was gone. Every since I have been pretty much a natural living kind of gal.

      It is nice to see others who agree!

  7. I agree that there's a place for medicine but if we can do without, nature is better! I do most of the same as you and thought your comment about fresh beans/asparagus was interesting. I have never had canned vegetables except for corn when I was a kid!

      I meant fresh as in raw!!!!! I love raw green beans and asparagus. As a matter of fact I like most veggies raw. That is the only way I will eat a turnip!!!

    3. I am a fan of RAW veggies for the most part. Now dry beans, I fix myself and cook - but most taste so good raw. I do have a bunch of frozen odds and ends. I don't think mom ever bought canned veggies from the store - we had a garden either ate them fresh or she froze or canned.

    1. I thought about that after posting the blog. YES - YES - local honey and bee pollen is great for allergy symptoms. It doesn't help me 100% - but it does help a lot.
      Local has all the pollen in it that we inhale - and it helps our bodies make immunities to it.

  9. total agree, I try to eat as close to nature as possible, with occasional treats, and fix with nature too. Though I think that there is a place for conventional medicine for serious illnesses and vaccines have made an enormous positive difference to humans health.

  11. I like tart black cherry juice for pain in my knees and fibromyalgia flare ups. Spearmint or peppermint tea for upset stomach (and just because it tastes good. Green tea too. I don't use sugar in those teas and unfortunately I am very allergic to honey. Love blueberries and most other ones. Just pulled some blueberries out of the freezer that I had frozen last summer. Let them melt just a tiny bit but still frozen. So good to eat that way! If a person eats more whole food like veggies and fruits, beans, nuts, grains they won't be as hungry. At least that is what I have found. Sugar and processed foods tend to not satisfy. Enjoyed your post. Take care.

      I love berries that are just partially thawed like that. My favorite is grapes - I LOVE frozen grapes. Such a treat.
      You are right - healthy snacks do make you feel full longer.

  12. My dad was a proponent of honey and ate it on just about anything. He also ate lots of butter - he used that in place of salad dressing. I'm serious.

    In the years before he passed away, while he was living in a nursing home I would purchase a case of honey every six weeks. If I remember correctly it was six 2 pound pails in a case, and he ate one pail every week. He lived to be 98 and while I certainly don't credit the honey for all of it, he never had arthritis or other aches and pains.

    I've heard good things about CBD oil, though I've not tried it...I expect someday I'll need it.

  13. Love this!! I think the good Lord gave us all the wonderful food to help our bodies be healthy. Like you I try to eat natural and stay away from 'modern' medicine when possible. With fresh gardens coming in this summer, eating fresh and preserving for the winter is my go to plan. Thank you for all your info.

  15. Well written post on nutrients we need for good health! That being said, if a person does not eat a healthy diet, not much, even natural remedies do much good. My husband uses CBD and I put a few drops in my dogs' breakfast bowl. Gary also found out today that not only does he have wet macular degeneration in his right eye, there is dry macular degeneration in his left eye. The doctors (including our local eye doctor) stressed the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. This is something he has always done but his mom had macular degeneration and it can be hereditary.

    We just got home so I'm off to prepare a veggie bake for lunch. Boy do I hate driving up in the Carmel area. Next time should be easier...I hope!
