Hey y'all! This has been a really good week here at the 'corner'. You never let me down, you always reach deep and give great ideas and experiences. I LOVE THAT!!!!!! There have been some good advice and ideas shared this week along with funny stories. I love all the sharing.
It seems we are never too old to learn, we always have something to teach and practice new things daily. My daddy used to ask me every day "what did you learn today?". Maybe as adults we should have that same mentality. Learn something new each day!
As life goes on, we all have to change at some point. That is the one constant in our life - CHANGE. Is change easy? NO. Is change fun? NOT always. Is change a learning situation? YES. Is change important? SURE.
If we didn't experience change in its many forms, life would be dull. I am not a big lover of drastic change. It makes me sad. It is inevitable, however.
Continue to go forward and teach something to someone each day. Continue to learn. Practice new ideas and make any changes that you need to, to make life a little easier.
RE-whatever as often as necessary to grow and adjust to this big old world.
Thank you again for all the participation and wonderful ideas this week. You are awesome. I just love how everyone has gotten friendly and converses back and forth with one another.
The 'corner' has become an extended family.
LOVE that china, and yes! That's exactly what it feels like here. Cheryl, your blog and all the comments have pulled me through many a day. If 2020 was the year the world went insane, 2022 has been the year of "recalculating". At least for me. Almost daily. There've been days I've felt so overwhelmed as to be long past overload. I've had to learn many things I never imagined I'd need to know about. There've been weepy days. Exhausted days. Plenty of worried days. But all in all? There's been a whole lot of GOOD. Countless reasons to be grateful.
ReplyDelete"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." —1 Thessalonians 5:11
That's what I find here. Thank you all, sincerely.

Thank you and LOVE the scripture. Perfect.
DeleteI think many of us have had some really bad days in the past few years. I know for me, that you have all helped me through my darkest days. Seriously.
I just love my friends here!
Thank you for this post, Cheryl. It is especially needed today. Yesterday was a very difficult day, and if I'm totally honest, the past week and a half have been that way. I need to step back, reset, redirect my energy, reinvigorate myself, readjust many things, reconsider my direction (and the direction I'm being pulled in), and refocus on what I [with a capital I, and in bold and underlined] need to do to make my life what I want. I'm encountering so much negativity on a daily basis that I often feel I'm being pulled under. I know change is inevitable, but when others question my professional expertise and integrity, how I spent 25 years of my life, and try to drag me into an argument to make themselves look powerful??? I need to reset and refocus, for sure, cuz I'm no one's yes man. While I feel the need to defend myself, I can't let others drain me of my energy. My lesson to myself (and others) today: If you don't know the answer, look it up. But look it up in reliable, fact-based, and unbiased sources. Educate yourself and don't rely on others to tell you what you should believe, cuz too many of them are idiots. (Sorry, I'm tired, I'm irritated, and I need another cup of coffee right now.)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good lesson for today. Sending out a (((hug))) to you, Lori, and will say a prayer for peace. --Elise
DeleteI definitely believe in learning - maybe not everyday, though I probably do and just don't realize it. :) Even frogging back a bit of knitting to re-do it teaches me to pay attention.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, though learning is important. It keeps our minds healthy. Another family story: when my dad was about 60 he taught himself to read French, with a dictionary and books from the library. As he aged, he continued to read in both languages, as well as doing crossword puzzles and anagrams. At the age of 93 he had a brain bleed and required emergency surgery. When the surgeon met with my brother and I afterward, she stated that his brain show no signs of atrophy which is common as we age. When we told her about Dad's habits, she credited these for his condition. He came through the surgery easily and showed little to no deficits as a result.
Maebeme, that's an incredible story about your dad! Wow! I have always been proud of my Grandpa teaching himself English, doing the same thing as your dad. My Grandpa had little education at all and by the time I was born, he spoke English without an accent at all, was smart and well-read, and had the most beautiful penmanship! He was in his 20s and 30s, which impressed the heck outta me! But when I think of trying to learn a new language NOW (60 is near lol), I'm shaking my head that I'd start shooting springs out my ears from overload!! But then I think about how many people write their first novel or paint their first masterpiece after 60! I mean, maybe we're too overwhelmed by life at a young age, just trying to deal with jobs, bills, kids, etc. And now we're finally able to find time and energy for a little side project!
DeleteSure makes me think!!
Maebeme I think we learn each day even when not trying or being aware. Just watching TV or reading a book, we learn something.
DeleteWhat a neat story about your dad. That is amazing. YES, I believe if we keep our minds active and healthy we can persist in parts of our bodies staying young.
Debby - same - neat story. People can do so much with a little effort.
My dad finished 8th grade. He was one of the smartest men I even knew. Challenged himself everyday with the crossword. Back then they set a time limit you should meet - he always finished in half the time. Had a brain for math, that exceeded everyone I know. Owned his business and made the cover of a national gardening magazine. He did good!
I stive to be a small part like him and mom. Both just amazed me.
That is amazing! My Dad was so smart and knew anything we wanted to know because he was always learning. He was the only employee in the company he retired from to be an Engineer without a college degree.
DeleteThanks Debbie, and Cheryl. I do think my Dad was pretty darn special. He also had to leave school after the 8th grade as his father had passed away and he was needed on the farm. Maybe that explains his need to learn but in any event, he certainly is an inspiration.
DeleteBoth of you had amazing fathers too; we can take inspiration from their efforts. If they can, we can...as long as we set our minds to it.
I love mixed china and silver. I love this safe place after being bullied elsewhere this week. You all are the best!
ReplyDeleteLana I seem to get bullied somewhere else each week at least once. People just have no decency anymore. They think if they think it - they have a right to say it.
DeleteGlad you are here!!!
I'm sorry it is happening to you, too. We both say it like it is and some self centered people can't take it because we speak the truth. 🤗 Hugs
DeleteI'm sorry Lana. Me and husband thinks people have gone a little nutty. Hope they get back to a nicer people soon.
DeleteCheryl, you do attract the nicest readers to your blog .
ReplyDeleteMust be something about you.
I'm going to work on learning something new each day .
Even if it is a small thing.
I adore old mismatched China. I keep the color scheme
Close,so it's not jarring. I love all old,vintage things.
Miss Lori,I'm sorry you've had such a rough week .
Keep your head up and don't let them know they got to you.
Lana I'm sorry someone felt it was ok to bully you.
It's a shame, people have lost all morals and manners.
I HAVE the nicest readers - not sure what attracts them - but thank you.
DeleteLife is too short to get nasty all the time. What does it achieve? Nothing.
I am so thankful for all you gals!
Thank you, Savannah!
DeleteCheryl, I enjoy your blog each and every day. Not often I can reply as I found my mobile does not allow me but on the iPad it’s ok.
ReplyDeleteNow the dark evenings are here I used my iPad as a monitor for my security cameras. I live in the country.
You speak a lot of sense. I can’t understand why people are so rude on other peoples blogs.
Keep up the good work. Sylvia
Thank you Sylvia. Good idea to have cameras, especially if living out of the way. Keep an eye on things.
DeleteI think people are just rude about everywhere today and it is so sad.
So happy to have you here, and reply whenever you get a chance!!!
Hmmn, what have I learned today? That my swimsuit has degraded so much from the chlorine that I have been flashing my backside to the other unfortunate users of my local pool!
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, this isn't something I learned today, more a slow realisation, I need to retire. Technically I don't reach retirement age for another 8 years, but I can't face 8 years of dealing with mindless bureaucracy and stupidity. I will be 60 in November next year and I am looking at retiring then. I have an annual review (oh the joy, more inane questions) next week when I intend to formally raise the issue. I know I'm going to get a lot of comments, that I only work part time as it is and how will I manage financially. Frankly, I would sooner cut my cloth accordingly and retire than potentially die still working (I don't come from a long lived family).
OOPSY on the flashing!!!! LOL
DeleteGirl you do what you need to do. I quit working at 51! Hubs got his disability and retirement, and wanted me home. No problem. We still lived a good life. Money isn't everything.
Maybe you could find something else if necessary. Regardless, you do what is best for you - no one else's opinion matters.
Prayers is all works out for you!!!!
Do not I repeat do NOT give more notice than required to retire. You will suffer needlessly. I was required to give 30d notice-it was painful. An employee of mine gave 6w when she could have given 3. She regretted it.
DeleteThanks Elle I appreciate your advice, unfortunately I have to find out how much pension I am due and to do that I have to submit an official form. I was going to insist on my managers silence anyway but I shall be very firm about it now. You have given me much to think about, thank you.
DeleteSu, inquiring about benefits doesn't have to mean resignation. Ask for now, in 1y, 5y, 10y. Everyone knows smart people are planning their retirement futures. Best of luck to you!
DeleteMy mother collected teacups and saucers. None of which showed up twice in her collection. I used to love it when she would take them out to use for her ladies meetings.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
What a lovely memory. They make such a sweet statement.
DeleteOh, I love mismatched beautiful china! When things seem too much for me I think about the grit that the generations before us had. My grandparents were born during WWI, were teenagers through the Great Depression, and then had small children during WWII. Talk about change and having to adjust! And none of them had a high school diploma, but they continued learning and growing. My grandma lived to be 88 years old still living independently and finished the newspaper crossword puzzle everyday. Thank you for always inspiring us, Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl, it was Adrians funeral on Tuesday so now everything seems so final. I am 47 and have been off work since June when I needed to stay home and look after him. My job has been kept open and I'm not due back until December but I'm not sure the I want to go back there.it's not a plesent place to work as it is. I shall spend some time thinking about what to do but I really don't want to go back. Very tough year with also losing my brother suddenly in March. Time to reflect on what's important in life. Don't really know what to do with myself at the moment going from caring full time to suddenly being on my own. Clayre
ReplyDeleteThat China is beautiful! We like different pieces like that too. Frasier called it eclectic. 😂 I do love the comradery we have in the blog world. It’s a positive thing in our lives.
ReplyDeleteI like eclectic!!!!
DeleteYes, it is a great thing to have that extra 'family'. We all need all the positive we can get.
What did I learn ? Yesterday I went to Walmart and the sticker shock was astounding. I planned to buy a new package of underwear for myself and they are now $20 a package!!! I decided to wait for a sale. I used to get those underwear for $10-12. I also got out my bean and rice cookbook last night and came up with some new recipes to try. I'm going to learn how to depend less on meat!
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Tanga?
Deletehttps://www.tanga.com/deals/search?q=underwear%20women
It is amazing how expensive undies are! Hopefully there will be some sales coming up soon. It seems you get less pairs for more money as well!
DeleteI use less and less meat - that is a great idea.
I try to learn new things regularly. Right now it is new embroidery stitches. I've had to rip out a few but that's ok. Progress! Thank you for your blog. It is so refreshing and encouraging! --- Elaine
ReplyDeleteHi Elaine. Each stitch you rip out is a learning step! Been there and done that!!!!! I bet you will make some beautiful stitch work - hopefully you get to share it with others.
DeleteThank you for being here!!!!!!
Life is a learning expierence for sure Cheryl. I always find something in your blogs that I can do to save money and time. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the compliment. I learn 'something' every day - even if it is NOT how to do something!! Have a good one.
DeleteI do learn something each day, if not deliberately, by accident. Some people come on my blog and try to convince me of things they have no idea what they are talking about, then complain they are being bullied when someone sticks up for me. I do love the china, right up my alley. It is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSTOP
DeleteI believe we put ourselves out there when we blog - but it is still not nice for people to bully.
DeleteI just ignore any comments that are negative or that I disagree with - my choice.
So now you are here to bully me. Go away.
DeleteAgreed. I like this blog so much, Cheryl, because everyone is so tolerant and considerate of any difference of opinion. I learn so much from you just because of your outlook on life. You are truly a good woman.
ReplyDeleteDifferent strokes for different folks - that is what makes the world go round. It would be boring if we were all the same. I just keep my mouth shut if there is something I disagree with 'most times'. Making a big deal of things doesn't do anything!
DeleteYou are very kind!
I love learning and often learn things from my teenage grands. lol. Love the china. I have way too many dishes but hate to get rid of any of them. lol. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI think we can learn a lot from the young-ins if given the chance. Learning keeps our minds fresh!
DeleteI just love mis-match!
My Granny, who lived to be 95 years young told me the key to NOT getting old was to learn something every day and spend time with young people. My husband asks the grandchildren: What did you learn today? What made you laugh? I think his reminder to find humor in things is just as important as Granny's advice.
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice - granny was wise!!!!!
DeleteMy dad used to ask that of me every day.
Laughter - is the best medicine. Indeed, we all need to laugh and enjoy each day. Thank you for that reminder as well.
