Weekly Wrap-Up 10/16

Happy Sunday all.  Here we are halfway through another month.  Goodness, the holidays will be upon us in no time and the new year will be here quickly.  My, time flies.

We have had some decent weather this week.  A little rain - not much to speak of in my area.  Sunshine, nice temps, wind, and very, very soon freeze!  The temps start dropping tonight and much cooler days are ahead - then we get back to 70 by next weekend.  Guess I can't complain - doesn't do any good!

This has been me this week - just hanging in there!  It has been a very tough week.  It is so lonely in this house.  First time in decades - no other person, no pet inside.  Just me.  It has been very hard to get used to.
I keep expecting Coogy to come bopping in every time I make noise, to see what I am doing or what he can eat!  Every noise I hear, I think is him.  Every shadow I see - I look.  I really do miss him.  It is so amazing how such a little creature can make such a difference in a household.  Been loving on Fluffy and Blackie a lot.  They seemed to have sensed something different was going on with me.
Sadly, this is all part of life.

My week:
  • Took my Coogy to be cremated.  Got his ashes back on Friday
  • Did a lot more yard work - cleaning and clearing things out
  • Did tons of laundry - used dehumidifier water in laundry when I could
  • Renewed library books online
  • Picked lots and lots of cherry tomatoes - saving all I can with freeze coming
Hoping they will ripen, and I will have fresh for a while!
  • No shopping at all - stayed out of stores as to take no chance of being around people and maybe getting sick with surgery coming up this week
  • Froze 3 containers of soup
  • Got a rebate check from health insurance of $168 for years of 2017-2018!
  • Paid everything I had again this week.  I got a $0 gas bill this month and it had a $49 credit as well.  I am on the budget plan each month - so a no pay this month!  Paid the house insurance for the year - good grief in is over 2X as much as my house taxes!!!!!!
  • I partially deep cleaned kitty room - just couldn't do it all at once
  • I have cleaned and cleaned and cleaned some more.  Just trying to stay busy.
  • I refurbished the wood on my dining room tabletop
  • Using what I have, cooking from home and using all leftovers.  I made fried green tomatoes one day and had egg and flour seasoned mix left - so I added some flour to the egg and fried - to browned and crispy both sides (fluffy in middle) and that made a tasty snack one afternoon.  Didn't want to waste it!!!!
My meals this past week:
Leftover tortilla soup
Nachos
Roast beef sandwich and salad with egg added for extra protein
Mushroom, Swiss open face burger and side salad
Pozole and crackers
Corned beef & Swiss grilled sandwich and side salad
Chicken tenders and fried green tomatoes

I am very anxious about the upcoming week.  I am scared and excited all at the same time.  I know it will all be good, as God is in control.  It is amazing to think my vision will be so much better in no time.
I will answer all comments I can by evening today - after that I will be off the computer for most of the week.  I am not supposed to read or use computer for a few days.
So don't think I am ignoring you - just following guidelines.  Hopefully I will be back by Thursday - depends on what they say.
You guys feel free to chat amongst yourselves!!!!!!!

What have you all been up to this week?  Any deals or bargains?  Is your garden all wrapped up for the season?
I pray you all have a wonderful, safe and healthy week ahead.
Blessings from my humble little home to you and yours.

...fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah 40:10

Lord, thank You for assurances of goodness and support in our lives.  We turn our worries and frets over to You, knowing that You are with us, each and every one.  Help us to trust and have faith in all we do.  Amen

                                                 HAVE A BLESSED WEEK EVERYONE

  1. Of course you're anxious, you wouldn't be human if you weren't, but it's a tried and tested surgery and it will make your quality of life better.
    Best wishes.

  2. Trust and faith is what it is all about! I am praying for your mind to be at ease about your surgery. If I remember right, there was a limit as to how much I could lift for a while. Rest and eye drops will be your norm for a few days. If I had paid an extra fee, they could have done something extra that would have corrected my nearsightedness completely. However I would still have to have correction for reading. I can walk through the house with ease and even read regular size print.

We picked all the peppers and pulled up the plants. We chopped and chopped on bell peppers and the hot ones on Friday. Froze the hot ones in bags and put the bell peppers on a baking sheet to flash freeze and then dump into a bag(s). Goodness, I didn't realize that we had so many. Think I will pickle the banana peppers today. We have been eating turnips but the parsnips aren't quite ready. Cabbages are growing but I don't know what the cold weather, even covered, will do to them.

Good deal on your insurance rebate check! Extra $$$ is always welcome.

I made sausage gravy this morning with the turkey sausage we use. It was good with hash browns and eggs from the backyard girls. Don't think we'll eat lunch at the regular time...stuffed!

Prayers for you. Visit when the doc says you can.

    1. Yep - 10 lb. weight limit - no bending at waist - no reading or computer. TV is OK.
Sounds like your garden has really blessed you this year. That is wonderful. Have fun with all those peppers!
I am making some sausage gravy today for dinner! Sounds so good to me.
Thanks and I will be back soon!

  3. Prayers for a safe surgery and your healing. I had a surgery in January 2021 and spent the entire night before pacing the house and watching PBS, I was so anxious. Didn’t need to be, everything went fine and the surgery improved my health so much.

  4. I have prayed for you missing your kitty over the last week. I think of you without him when I am awake at night. I will be praying for your surgery as well. We are heading out for two weeks at the lake house today. It is going to get cold here, too and it is early for it. As usual we had a haul from the salvage store and yesterday we found out they are opening a new location more in the area where we usually run errands. Where they are now is kind of out for the way. This could be dangerous for us! Come back when you can and don't rush! Hugs!

    1. Oh, and our homeowners insurance went up $500! I am thankful that they are being diligent to keep up with the costs of replacing our house if there is a disaster but it was a shocker!

    2. Thank you so much for your prayers. It has been an abnormal week for sure. Looking forward to getting back to a little normalcy - although grief does go on.
Yay on going away to the lake. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your time. Stay warm!!!
Ooooh a closer salvage store - you lucky duck!!!
That may be it on insurance. There has been so many claims around the country this year - so I am sure we are all paying. At least I am covered.
Thanks - have a good vacation.

  5. Cheryl, I will be praying for you and your surgery and I know you will be okay. And I am sorry about Coogy. Once a long time ago, I lost a rescue old dog who was old when I adopted her. I had her for 5 years and it broke my heart when she passed. My vet, who is also a good friend, said, “You will know when it is time for another dog to come into your life.” I think you will know when it is time for you to have an inside kitty again. Until then, take care of yourself and I look forward to reading your blog soon! Hang tough!

  8. I too have cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. Getting ready for our end of the month trip up to the mountains of AZ. We've had our reservations in at the State campground for a year.
This week will be spent making more freezer meals for that trip.
Prayers for you Cheryl for your upcoming week. I can never sleep before any type of surgery. So I always go in exhausted. Dumb, I know. But it is what it is and yes, you can nap afterwards. Eat, sleep, just put your feet up! God loves you.

  9. I was gone for over a week and missed the news about Coogy and your surgery. I am so sorry about Coogy. We still miss our Westie dog, Molly, who left us last year at 15-1/2. I think we always will! We have another dog (they were together for 5 years but she never liked him) and it is a good thing their personalities are so different! (He is more the court jester).

As for your eyes, I'm assuming you are having cataract surgery. I had both eyes done about 5 years ago. I paid $800 extra to get a special lens to correct the astigmatism in one eye...but they couldn't do it in the other, so what the heck? I hated wearing reading glasses so I went back to bifocals after about 2 years, and I'm very happy. I see so much better! Turns out the 20/20 correction I was supposed to get for distance isn't quite 20/20 (but not far off) so now I have great acuity at all distances, with no putting on, taking off and losing my readers. I expect your surgery will be successful and you will wonder why you worried so much! ((( Cheryl )))

  13. After a week of mostly nice weather, we are to have frost, freeze and even a little snow this coming week. The vegetable gardens are done and emptied. I'll let the flowers go a little longer for the seed for the birds. I relented and put out a couple more bird feeders this morning because of the number of birds looking for them. I took advantage of the good weather to caulk around the new doors (that project is done!), wash and hang out laundry and curtains, winterize the outdoor faucet, put away the garden hose, check the skirting insulation, check the heat tape, and clean the internal furnace filter.
We're down to a few yellow jackets in the house per day. I'm not looking forward to when the eggs in the nest hatch, but the exterminator will come back and take care of that phase of the problem, too.
Husband shattered a tooth Wed. evening and has to see the dentist tomorrow. Fortunately, it had had a root canal, so he is not in pain. Unfortunately, it is a front lower tooth, one of the few he has left with which to chew. His jawbone has deteriorated so he is not a candidate for dentures.
Husband read an article in a popular financial magazine that said to consider taking a long train trip if you have an extra $1000 laying around. Made me scratch my head. In the past month, we've had to have a new toilet installed, the cat was euthanized and cremated, the exterminator visited, and we'll have dental co-pays. All that will come to over $1000. Needless to say, we'll be replenishing our emergency fund, not taking a train trip!
Besides Husband's dental appt., I have my physical on Thurs, Aldi on Wed., and the library's semi-annual book sale on Friday. It's going to be a busy week with way too much 'peopling'.
Best bargain of the week was 8% off of purchase of Tracfone airtime with my credit card. I bought two 1-year plans at $199/each and will get a CC credit of nearly $32. Sure beats the $95/month we were paying Verizon.
Cheryl, I understand what you mean about looking for Coogy. I keep thinking Charley should be sleeping on my bed or looking out the window when I walk by my bedroom door. When you're ready for another indoor cat another one will adopt you.
Continued prayers for your surgery and to relieve your anxiety. We'll be looking forward to hearing all about it when you're back online.

I am sorry about your hubs tooth - hope it can be fixed for his chewing comfort!
UGH on the darn yellow jackets. You would think they could have done more to get rid of them.
That is a great deal on the phone. My brother-in-law is still on my plan and he is in a nursing facility. He has little mobility - so I just can't really change anything for now. I would love to change plans - but someday.
I feel for you as well - it is so hard without them here. You just expect to see or hear them. You are right, another will FIND ME, when the time is right. They have all found me, over the years.
Thank you for your prayers. I will be back soon. Don't you over do it this week!

  15. Add me to the Eyeball Well-wisher Club! Yup, you got this!

Oh, I know so well that feeling of the petless house. Picking up all the toys, beds, dishes nearly killed me. I had my husband's big ol size 15 shoes clomping around so there was noise when he was home. But when he was working, I felt so so alone. I suspect that's why I only lasted 6 weeks before calling the rescue.

Our water bill was astronomical again. Ugh. I don't watch the national news so I'm clueless about lots....by choice lol!! I happened to see this morning a bit about the Mississippi River being so low! Bloomin Nora, I had no idea that the entire Midwest was in a drought! Especially with all the talk of California trying to divert our water. I knew Kansas was in a drought, but the weather dudes are always talking about the weather patterns sending the moisture north and south. (OK stole our rain last night lol). So hearing about an area wide drought was quite disturbing. And we already do all those tree hugger things like rain barrels, catching warm up water, etc. Our yard practically crunches when we walk on it. I have my doubts that our grass will survive.

Hubs brought up a box of books for me to fill my reading shelf so it's nice to see that full again with books that seem interesting. He surprised me when he said that I've really depleted the stash my MIL gave me (hundreds). That I'm primarily down to paperbacks. I got so spoiled from hardcover that I now dislike paperbacks!! But if they're authors I like, I'll suffer through them.

Frances, I would be in serious trouble if yellow jackets were in my house. I am so irrationally afraid of stinging flyers that I've nearly caused myself serious injury trying to escape. I would honestly be living in the car or outside under a giant net. When you just mentioned eggs and more of them, I squeaked so loud, the dog started barking lol. I know. Irrational.

Cheryl, your meals always sound so good. Trying to think what I made this week. Spaghetti, vegetable soup, chili dogs, pizza, taco salad, and hamburgers. I'm pretty tired of the same stuff, but grateful to have it, ya know?

Well, you take care of yourself this week and make sure you keep track of those eye drops! Relax and enjoy the break!

    1. It is quiet for sure. Just keep expecting that sweet little fellow to come trotting in.
I have seen that about the Mississippi. My water bill is still the same in IN. I am sure after the winter I keep seeing projected, we will have more liquid. Although I never believe the predictions. Sometimes right - sometimes wrong. Best bet - is stick your head out the door and you can tell what it is doing!!!!!!
Nice on the books. Good hubs!
It seems we all get in ruts with meals. I am ready for comfort food. I just do easy at my house. YES, grateful to have what I have.
Thank you and I will rest up. No other choice! I will be back soon.

Yes, I know what you mean…I always keep thinking I see my missing pet out of the corner of my eye……
We never found my dad’s cat. So hard for him not to know what happened He put away the litterbox, etc., yesterday.
Sounds like your week was a hard one, but productivity does help, for sure, doesn’t it?
I love tomatoes too, and you’ve had a wonderful harvest of the cherry tomatoes this year! Yum!

Got to keep busy. Idle hands - idle mind. I learned that years ago.
I did have soooo many cherry tomatoes. They sure did produce. Too bad I didn't get as many regular ones. They did good, but not like those cherries!

  17. It was a stressful week here, as well. Had issues with a credit card company (reversed a late charge in Sept., but failed to remove the minimum interest charge, which kicked the late fee back in, and then added a second late fee, grrrrrr ...), and a dispute with another store over an online order (everything was ordered for in-store pick-up, but 2 of the 4 items kicked back to "Ship to", meaning shipping charges added + I lost my discount for store purchase above $xx). Then, Mom decided on an assisted living place, and decided she wants to move NOW, like by the end of the month (and I'll be away much of that week). I'm also not sleeping well and there's so much political turmoil in my suburb (current Mayor running for US House). I truly needed the prayer at the end of your post, and have printed it out for daily and nightly reflection.

    1. Oh wow. That is a mess with the charge card and the charges. THAT is a big reason I do not order things online. If I can, I will continue to go and shop myself. I don't charge a fee!!!
Oh my goodness. Does mom realize how much work that is going to involve for others too? I am sorry it has turned out like this. What a mess.
Don't fret about the political garbage - all you can do it vote - nothing else. That is kind of out of your hands.
Prayers for you dear that you can receive some calm and rest. Give it to God - He will take care of you.
      Huge hugs!!!!!

Got some good deals this last week. Boneless chicken breast for 99 cents/lb. I got marinated pork tenderloin rolls for $1.44 each. They're usually at the least 6.99 and often more. Hubs loves them. I got a bunch. I also eye round roast for 1.99/lb. My freezer is groaning. Got a gallon of whole milk for $1.60 so made my grandson some yogurt.

I celebrated Thanksgiving with my nephew & his family last Sunday. It was their first time to cook a holiday meal on their own. They passed with flying colors. I got to bring the turkey carcass home to make broth. I got to care for my neighbors' 16 mo old while they separated calves for shipping. You should have seen her dragging 2 buckets around the yard! The 2 cords of wood that was delivered has been stacked. I'm enjoying a fire each evening when the house cools down. I've got a good section of the old corrals torn down. The time spent swinging the sledge hammer allows me to rethink new construction. Meals this week: lentil soup, chicken pot pie, butter chicken with rice. The week flies by. I hope this coming week flies by for you.
