Happy Sunday! Well, BOOM October is basically gone! What happened? Time is flying by, and before you know it, we in the U.S. will be celebrating Thanksgiving! Then it will be Christmas in a blink of an eye.
Fall is in full bloom here in my area. We had a couple really cold nights - but it has really been a nice week. Today is supposed to bring some rain - which we need. It looks like the weather will be lovely for the first week of November with highs in the 70's!
The leaves are staring to fall A LOT! My tulip poplar tree is basically empty now and some of the maple leaves are falling as well. Color is in full force.
Looking at the maple tree with fewer leaves I see no less than 5 squirrel nests up there!!! Maybe more!
It seems birds are migrating through the area this week as well. I usually have red winged black birds in spring and early summer - but usually only see a couple. Friday morning there were a minimum of 10 out there at the feeders (male and female). They were eating up a storm and they were actually shooing away the blue jays!!!!! It was pretty neat to see. Then they were gone! I still have the occasional stray one - but that was crazy to see so many. I loved it. The pileated woodpecker has been out there all week as well.
There was an incredibly beautiful sunrise this morning - God sure is a lovely artist.
I actually had a pretty busy and nice week!
- Been doing a LOT of cleaning - 'seeing' so much with these new eyes. Cleaning lots of things that don't cleaned often (at least at my house). Ceiling fans, walls, pictures, knick-knacks and behind and under things - oh my!!!!!
- Fixed a finch feeder that had a broken lid
- Lots of laundry
- Made a gallon of tea (haven't made in a while) - drank it all!!!!!
- The garden patch is totally cleaned out now - okra in pots still blooming, but everything else is out
- Cleaned out an entire fence row of spent flowers and 'stuff'
- Cleaned the deck (where greenhouse is) of leaves 2X this week
- Tore apart a crumbling wood bench and replaced it with an older bench from yard. Fluff loves her bench on the deck!!!!! On nice days she spends lots of time on 'her' bench!
- Had the windows open a lot
- 'Picked' another bowl of cherry tomatoes - from the box of green ones!
- Trimmed my hair
- My sis took me out to lunch on Wednesday - such a nice day that was
- I received a surprise gift from a reader and fellow blogger. I was just thrilled!
- I did run to Kroger for a couple of digital deals they had. Yeah, I ended up with a lot more than that. I did get choc. milk for 1.49/half gal., navel oranges 2.99/3 lbs., and seedless grapes for .99/lb. Ended up with 5 little gifts for holiday bags from clearance and quite a few more things. I will show you deals this week
- Mowed the entire yard and mulched leaves
- Got a gas fill-up. It is still pricey here at 3.89/gal., but I got a .30/gal. discount, so that helped.
- My brother and SIL came by and visited on Thursday and brought me a lovely bouquet of flowers!
- I went to a funeral memorial for a longtime friend (a camping buddy) this week. He has had a really rough time of life the past couple of years (so much self-inflicted - sadly). It was a nice memorial and done in a way that was different from what I have seen before. It was basically just a few hours of family and friends visiting and talking and telling old stories amongst themselves. Very casual and really not sad. I really felt uplifted after leaving - we just all loved sharing stories and seeing each other. We figured that was his final gift to us all.
Meals this past week:
Warm roast beef sandwich and leftover mashed potatoes
Fried tuna patty, broc./cheese rice
Leftover rice, smoked sausage and fried cabbage
LUNCH w/SIS - fried tenderloin, fries and slaw at a little family joint
Burger with cheese, one of the last reg. tomatoes, and chips
Grilled cheese and fruit
Leftover pizza (freezer) and a salad
SNACKS - lots of fruit, cheese and crackers, almonds
This week started my 68th anniversary of celebrating life on this earth! I got so many phone calls, cards and visits, it was really nice. To me, it was just another day - but family and friends were so kind and made it special.

Cheryl, sounds like you're recovered from your cataract procedure. Sorry to hear about the death of your friend. Life is good; then it's bad and we just keep putting one foot in front of the other and engaging in life. My son spent a few nights with me & helped winterize a property we maintain & helped dismantle the old corrals. He makes it look easy. Christmas plans were made; I'll be joining his family, weather permitting. The winter tires were put on. Let it snow; let it snow. I got to look after the little neighbor this week. Her dad calls her Punkintator. Pumpkin sugar cookies are baking for her as we speak. I'll practice the decorating later. Cousins gifted me with a virtual concert by William Prince, a Juno award winning indigenous singer/songwriter who has performed at my house on the 2017 Home Routes tour. Food prepared this week: lasagna, rice pudding, round steak with roasted veggies; bruschetta. Cheryl, please include prayers for my SIL who is currently being investigated for a neurologic event - repeated falls & disorientation.

It's been a good week in our corner of the world. We had a nice visit and dinner with new friends midweek. The 8 lb. chicken (at $1.19 per lb.) is still feeding us via a pot of chicken and rice soup that we'll finish up today with fresh cornbread. Yum!
Other than the chicken, not much in the line of food bargains. At least nothing I needed beyond oil and eggs. And that, because I'm baking cake mix cookies from cake mix bought at about $1 per box. Cake mix cookies are so easy and versatile; just add 1/2 cup oil + 2 large eggs and mix well. Add in stir ins you'd like, if you choose. Chill the dough for a bit, then scoop onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. If you're at high altitude (as we are) add 2 T. flour to the mix. This even works with GF boxed cake mix. I made chocolate chip w/walnut cookies using a yellow cake mix the other day and Hubs said they're about the best I've ever made. LOL!

I have friends who've mishandled their lives and I'm kinda waiting for sad news about them. Drinking, drugs, and overeating really can mess with a body. :( But then I had friends who'd been careful and healthy, and boom, they're gone. Guess God has a path for each of us.

DeleteYes, drinking was this guys culprit, and it was bad. He had bad health anyway (his heart), and then had to quit working and it all went downhill from there quickly. Nothing the doctors said (and they told him it was killing him) mattered. He had an aneurysm for years - and they think it finally went. He laid down for a nap and gone. I guess at least it was probably instant. Sad. But it was a nice gathering of people who loved him.
Yes mam, God has our days numbered. That I do believe.

ReplyDeleteIt is definitely fall in northern Idaho! We have not had frost at my house yet...but it's all around me. I have lived in this area for 25 years and this is the latest frost date ever.
I spent the weekend getting all of the patio furniture stacked up under the covered part of the patio and putting planters and garden decor in the shed. I like to clean up the garden in the fall, but it looks like I'll be leaving it standing all winter this year. Just too much effort for me right now and the birds will appreciate the seed heads.

Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday! Love that. Our gas is cheaper this week we found it for 3.68 a gallon at Sams but many other places were close to $4.00. Not sure why the difference but we did fill up.

ReplyDeleteMy husband has had a cold and cough all week so we have not been far. I did help granddaughter no 2 sort out her two wardrobes, wow so many clothes that were not worn or too small. Her Mum listed them on a selling site and between them have so far posted 22 parcels. Money towards her car service in November.
Father in law gave us a bag of apple's so I have prepared some for the freezer and made an apple crumble for our daughter as we ate at her house tonight. I have done very little shopping the past two weeks as we have been eating from the freezer. Eldest granddaughter has just sent a photo of the two pumpkins her and her boyfriend have carved. There are several houses locally decorated for Halloween but it's not quite so popular as over in the US.I

Today was too busy for a Sunday! Most importantly, it's my pup's eighth birthday and he's still a puppy in my eyes! Happy birthday to you, too, Cheryl! And I felt terrible being gone so long. We had church, donated blood, attended a charity breakfast, and stopped at the dairy.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I gave y'all the impression that I was having a bad day. I'm just not feeling great about the ways of life these days. I'd like to trade for a different normal cuz this one stinks! We're in our retirement countdown plan and watching things go way down...like the Tower of Terror. Sure, I appreciate the blessings we have, but it's hard to be happy go lucky when our already small monthly grocery budget has half the buying power it used to. I'm a realist. This is pretty scary.
I agree with Cheryl that we're already in a recession. Elise talked about 2008 or thereabouts and I only remember higher gas prices and irritating "gas surcharges" on certain bills. (Funny how there's no refund when prices go really low, huh?!). All of our other bills were normal and to be honest, we were doing great, as were our friends. Now, everyone is barking! Most everyone is or has delayed retirement (especially those in Cali).
Alrighty, you can vote me off the island if I'm annoying you, but I do thank you for your concern 😁. I was pretty cranky on Friday, but that was only because the birthday boy found a big pile of fresh goose poop out in the yard somewhere and rolled in it from neck to tail. DISGUSTING!!! He was quite literally a little stinker. We both got a good bath after that ordeal.
The rest of last week went well. We got a smidgen more rain. The Lord certainly outdid himself with the Autumn show. It's beautiful. I think I enjoy the season change much more after growing up in Cali and only having 3 seasons...Hot, Hotter, and Fire!!
I also send sympathies on the loss of your friend so young. I've lost 2 friends in their early 50s in the last 5 years. One to alcohol and one to drugs. Both to complete organ failure. It's tragic, but wasn't surprising. Whenever the phone rings from my brother's area code, I expect another. He's 53 and a long term user. I have been praying for him for some 40+ years.
So, for the second time this month, I got out of line at Mc Donald's after seeing the menu prices!! The large sodas were $1 forever. I was going to get two. The price rang up at $2.73. I hollered NEVERMIND!!! CANCEL THAT! and left. Today we were going to get 3 cones to celebrate pup's birthday. $1.29 each. Nope! $1.89 now. We pulled out before they took our order! Good grief!! Mc Donald's is for the rich people these days lol!!!
We were blessed by getting to the breakfast so late this morning. The organizer was a friend and when they shut the doors, he asked hubs if he wanted their leftover biscuits. Are you ready?! FIVE DOZEN!! Hubs loves biscuits so he's in heaven. They're the home style type.
Meals were:
Au gratin spaghetti.
Homemade baked beans with hot dogs.
Cashew chicken salad in pitas.
BBQ pork.
Homemade chicken noodle soup.
Ham and Lima beans.
And, last night we had PB and Js because they sounded good!

DeleteYes, it is always sad when we lose someone, but many times we know it is just a matter of time - especially with lifestyles.
Sorry you are feeling so frustrated. I also remember the mess from the 70's - you could only buy gas on even or odd days depending on birthdays or name or some stupid criteria. The late 80;'ds weren't much better. The market crashed big time and everyone was so afraid of losing retirement and investments. Just remember generally what goes down (market) - does go back up. You lose NOTHING unless you take things out. Leave things alone and be patient. I do believe we will see things getting better, it will just take time. Trust us older folks who have been there and done that!!!!!!
Funny, pop at McD here just recently went to 1.19. That is still good compared to others. I like a fountain drink once in a while. Not often. I don't eat there.
YAY on the biscuits!!!! Some days it pays to be late or behind. What a treat for your hubs.

Debby, I was right where you are on things at the 1st of the year. My husband had already retired at Christmas. Our house plans in AZ were underway and our move here planned. My own IRA had bled everything it had gained in the previous year. It probably doesn't help to know you're not alone, but it might help to know somehow, someway, it works out. Maybe not the way you expect, but it does. Eventually. And I don't mean that to sound trite.
DeleteFrom 2007 on, for eight years during that recession, Hubs not only didn't receive any cost of living raises at work, out employee contribution into health insurance and his pension increased. In fact, our insurance costs doubled. I had 2 teenaged sons during that time, too, and feeing them became a real challenge. Higher gas costs meant carpooling to and from work. It also meant no family trips. Even weekend ones. That's when "Staycation" became a word. Many businesses in the small, coastal town we lived in went under, because tourism fell flat. Hubs worked for the county and there were weekly auctions on foreclosed homes.
It's GOOD that those years weren't bad for you. I'm glad for it. And you're still in my prayers. --Elise

DeleteOh, I was just starting to drive with that gas mess. For a 16 yr. old, it was a money making opportunity! Relatives paid us $10 to go get their gas lol!!! Get paid to wait in line?! Heck yeah! Consequently, it was a social gathering of buddies. My parents were far less amused lol. I can't imagine if you had a job and had to take 2 hrs. to get gas and didn't have a teen driver to help.

So many people these days are opting for no service or recognition at all. I recall the days when two days of visitation was normal.

ReplyDeleteI was supposed to be off work, but had to go in for 'training', it wasn't training at all and what really annoys me is that the journey takes 90 minutes each way. So for my 2 hours pay I was out of the house for 5 hours. Still I am off this week and next.
I did make butter and soda farls with the clearance cream I bought and what a bargain! I got 240grams of butter and 2 soda farls for 20p, 250g of butter is now a minimum of £2.
I am continuing to stalk the clearance section in my local mini supermarket and my freezer is pretty full.
I have eventually got the needle size right for the Christmas scarf I am knitting, it's progressing nicely.
My daughter found a Nordic walking taster session and knew I wanted to try it, I am so glad I went the couple running it were lovely and I was the only person to turn up for any of the 3 sessions. It's a little bit tricky to get to, but the sessions are only once a month, so another free activity for me to partake in.

Soda farls are just soda bread but cooked on a griddle. Apparently soda bread is more from southern Ireland, soda farls are from northern Ireland. I prefer them and they're quicker to cook.

Very thoughtful, especially wrapping things up to mail. The pretty flower bouquet is such a pretty display of the fall season, just lovely.
ReplyDeleteI'm busy cleaning for Thanksgiving, dusting little nooks that have been neglected etc. I am enjoying a few fairy lights the little wire kind on my kitchen window sills and some fall leaf lights I have in my main eating area. (I just need to remember to turn them on!) lol
I found my grandbabies Christmas gifts this past week, so that was a blessing. The only hiccup was returning from Walmart with a 3 piece baby outfit missing the pants to it! Gah! Check your stuff friends before you leave the store! Who would have thought though? I have no idea how that happened, it probably was left at the checker's feet somewhere. : ( That Walmart is almost an hour away and I had to get the manager on the phone. Geesh. I promptly ordered another outfit but not the same one since it wasn't online. Kinda disappointing but maybe for the good since the new one will be more Christmas colored. Yep, some days we have to say..."Good grief Charlie Brown!" : )

Those nooks and crannies sure do contain some dust!! I think we all have those places that just don't get cleaned often. Then when we do - YIKES.

Yes, i could definitely use some other pants but the pants that went with it were these cute little striped knit britches. The jacket matched with little doggy ears! lol All browns, but the manager on the phone I finally got hold to assure me with a receipt I can bring them to another wallyworld, so some how or another I'll either find another pair of striped britches at the other wally or I'll have the other set I ordered. Win-win! Right? I remembered as I was sitting on the phone yesterday on hold that there were plenty of others with problems like those at the children's hospital. I used to have a temper too, God has taken one layer off at a time though, now people think I'm a gentle soul who laughs loud. : ) What would I have done without the Lord in my life? He's definitely not through with me yet either! lol
DeleteHappy belated Birthday Cheryl! That's so nice that your friends and family made a bit of a fuss over it. 😊 I hear ya on time just whizzing on by. It really does! Our leaves are just about all gone but they were amazing while they changed colors. I'm grateful we didn't receive a lot of heavy rains during the colors so we could enjoy them just a little longer.
