Weekly Wrap Up 11/13

Happy Sunday to all.  My goodness this week flew by.  Sometimes I question myself about what day it is - it is all just going by so quickly.

We had some very warm weather this past week and BOOM it got cold.  Yesterday didn't really get above 32* F, and it looks like most of the week will be in the 30's for highs.  We got some snow yesterday - maybe about 1" - 1 1/2".  It snowed for several hours.  It snowed on the grass - but not the street, walks, or drive!!!!  LOL!  (my kind of snow)!  Snowing so soon after mid 70's & summer weather kept the pavement warmer.
Many neighbors put up their outside Christmas lights this week to take advantage of the warm weather.  Can't say I blame them.

The kitties sure do like their warm house!  I don't think Blackie left it yesterday, except maybe to potty! Fluff had to bird watch a little, but she was so funny to watch.  Every couple of steps - she was shaking her paws!!  Seems they are like people, and forget what snow is all about from year to year.

I went out around sunrise the other day and happened to see a HUGE bird sitting way up in a tree a couple doors down.  It looked big and was quite a distance.  I thought maybe just maybe it might be a fluke and maybe there was an eagle flying through (it was that big).  Came in and got the binoculars to look.  No eagle - but the biggest red-tailed hawk I have ever seen, then I noticed a 2nd one about 20' below that one!  Watched them for quite a while and they both finally moved on.  It sure was something to see.
So many squirrels in mine and neighbor's yard.  Lots and lots of other birds.  It is so pretty to watch them all.  I love it.

This past week:
  • Picked up tons of sticks and limbs after last weekend's windstorm
  • Started washing trim, doors and woodwork - then moved to a few walls (getting things readied to paint with touch-up paint)
  • Decided to tear apart the refrigerator - oh my.  Took everything out of the inside and cleaned every shelf & the walls and drawers.
  • One thing leads to another - then the stove  - then besides and under frig and stove. (can't get behind).  Then moved rolling drawer stacks beside stove and scrubbed then.  Oh and this led to cabinets and walls........  Everything except on top of cabinets and ceiling (on the agenda).  My back needs to rest!
  • Ran to feed store, Fam.Dollar/Dol. Tree store and Ollie's - all right close together
  • I did manage to get a few items for gifts
  • Went to eye specialist again - last apptmnt. scheduled for end of November (after all drops have stopped for a week).  Then the next day - to regular eye doctor for glasses appointment
  • Got out the shovel, outdoor broom and ice melt when the snow began.  Plugged in all the water bowls and birdbath
  • Ran to Kroger - for the .49/lb. turkey.  Didn't need it, but heck I cannot get lunchmeat that cheap!  I also found canned cat food flavors I hadn't seen in months.  Stocked up.
$6.01 for turkey - saved almost $16 on price!!!!!!!  Turkey was right at 12 lbs. - perfect for me
  • Ran to Aldi - got wine I like for the season.  Got a couple gift items there, and saw a lot of prices slashed - as promised - back to 2019 pricing.  I got some cheese and a small cheesecake sampler!  What a treat 8 slices for 5.95!
  • Got to have windows open a lot this week - even the bedroom window open a little at night until Friday
  • Made another gallon of iced tea
  • Using throws and afghans to snuggle and keep warm instead of turning up heat very high
Meals this past week:
Breaded pork fritter sandwich - mashed potatoes and corn (leftover)
Small pc. of beef (from freezer), asparagus, garlic/cheese French bread
Burrito supreme (2)
Slice of pizza (freezer) and side salad
Open face 'taco' meat sandwich and steamed broccoli
Cube steak, mac n cheese with extra broc. added
Bagels with cream cheese and corned beef
SNACKS - fruit, pork rinds, cheese slices

I asked a stranger a question at Ollie's this week, and we ended up having a lovely conversation for well over a half hour - very common thoughts.  She was so friendly and shared many thoughts.  I learned some things that day, had to look up and say "hey, Dad - I learned a lot today" - then I chuckled.  She was a retired microbiologist and very interesting.  We talked a lot about natural healing and herbs.  Nice to run into like-minded folks.

How was your week?  Have you found any good grocery deals?  I am sure seeing a lot of good prices being advertised.  Next week's Kroger ad (I get sneak peeks) looks to be good as well and so does Meijer.
Are you getting the cold and snowy stuff as well?  Getting ready for all the upcoming holidays?
**This next week I will do a couple posts about giving from 'home and heart' as requested.  Hoping it helps some maybe save a few dollars.

I sure hope this finds you all well and safe.  Stay warm and cozy this week and happy prepping for the holidays.
Blessings from my humble little home - to you and yours.

Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:34

Lord, You know our natural instinct is to worry.  Help us live for today and live well and happy.  Help us understand worry solves nothing - as You are in control.  I know when scared or agitated, I need only to ask You for help and turn it all over to You.  Nothing is beyond Your power.
Help us to turn to You alone.  Amen

  1. I often end up having interesting conversations with strangers in the supermarket. One man who I got talking to several weeks ago and who I now keep bumping into told me about an app where you buy bags of food for a small sum, but you don't know what's in them, but for me that's part of the fun.

My week has mainly been reorganising, refreshing and updating my bedroom. This is no quick fix, I am doing it with almost no budget and I am trying to use things I already have. So far so good and I am liking it a lot, much neater and simpler and in a bedroom as small as mine (6.5' X 11') that's important.

Our weather has been remarkably mild, indeed it's beautiful today. Long may it continue as I need to sand several pieces of furniture for my bedroom.

    Have a good week everyone.

    1. It can sure be fun talking with strangers. They are put in our lives (or us into theirs) for a reason! That sounds like a neat app.
YAY - the bedroom makeover for no budget. That is fun. It is fun to mix things up and then repaint or just redo objects. I bet it will be divine. Have fun with it!
      Have a great one!!!

  2. Like you, Cheryl, I get a lot of pleasure watching wildlife. Each morning I look out to see what new tracks are across the yard & often watch deer close to the house. I watched what I think are juncos strip the remaining mountain ash berries off the tree. The bears will be hibernating by now with this winter weather. My snow angel cleared the driveway & yard earlier this week. We bartered snow removal for old corral boards. My SIL is recovering well. I think the home health services won't be necessary for long. I finally got the right shoe size for my mom with 2 trips to the shoe store. There will be a third this wk to return the off sizes. It's hard to shop for her with her limited mobility & dementia. I've made some lists & even ordered a few things in anticipation of Christmas only 5 wks away. I enjoyed lunch & games with friends this week awa a long overdue overnight visit from my cousin. We visited, walked, played games, read & just enjoyed each other's company. I was happy to use up some lingering freezer foods - chocolate cheese cake & raspberry coulis, puff pastry for the trout I served my cousin, ham for the homemade pizza. One of my friends sent turkey stew that I ate with biscuits. I got to care for the little neighbor this week. She doesn't navigate the snow that well, all bundled up in a snowsuit like the Michelin man. It was a good week.

    1. I just love watching all the critters. Bear - oh my! Glad we have none of those to worry about. What a sweet snow angel!!!
Glad to hear your SIL is doing so well and that you got mom some new shoes that fit.
WOW - 5 weeks! Sure sounds daunting!
Sounds like you had some great times this week. Love it.
I chuckled when you mentioned the little one in her snow suit - I think the little brother in Christmas Story - "Ralphie I can't get uuuuppppp". LOL
      Have a great week!

  3. The cold has found us this morning! Brrrrr.....our Southern bones are cold! Our Aldi does not seem to have reduced prices that we could find which confuses me. I wish they had published an actual ad for that.. But, Lidl had $2 a pound butter and 6/$2 can veggies and 1.69 sugar. The salvage store had Jimmy Dean sausage rolls for 1.50, Peets coffee for 2.99, 3# bags of breaded chicken tenders for 6.99, party bags of kettle chips for 1.99 and other misc. All in all worth the trip. When we came out of that store yesterday the weather had changed that quick. There was a cold wind blowing and you could feel the cold coming.

I love to run into like minded natural health people. One day I talked to a lady who was 90 and knew all sorts of old remedies and uses for roots and herbs. Then she told me that her mother lives with her and takes care of the house while she is work as a caregiver everyday! They had stayed well with what she and her mother knew. I really wish I had asked for her contact information because I would have really liked to have learned more from her. But, I have found over the years that just when I need to know something that God will show me.

    Stay warm!

    1. Yup - the cold is here.
There were no ads on the markdowns at my Aldi - just little signs around the store that were beneath regular ones that 'reduced to...".
You got some great deals - WTG!
The temps changed quickly here as well. Friday was upper 60's (Thurs. 70's), then by Sat. morning it was in the 30's and snowing!!!!!
90 and lived with her mother!!!!!!! Oh my gosh! That is amazing. What great genes those women must have and what knowledge they could tell.
Yep, God places us where we need to be and with whom we need. I believe that too.
      Have a great week!

  4. Wednesday was a high of 80 here and I noticed I even got a bit of sun sitting outside reading. Then yesterday 20's with snow. Crazy how quickly the weather can change dramatically.
I was listening to Good Morning America today (which I typically don't) and they were talking about the rising costs of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. They even suggested maybe chicken, or beef or duck instead. Are they insane? Turkey is the cheapest meat you can buy now. They also remarked that the meal cooked at home has gone up 17% while eating out has only gone up 8% so it may be better to eat out. WHAT?? The leftovers from a typical meal will make the food SO much cheaper than one meal out. And this is why I don't watch MSM.

    1. They must be delusional!!!!!!!!!! Turkey is by far the cheapest meat - even this year. Home cooking is always cheaper than restaurant and tastes so much better and sooooo many leftovers! They have absolutely NO clue!
I truly think Thanksgiving dinner is the cheapest holiday meal that can be made - especially with all the deals one can find.
I agree, the weather changed on a dime this year. Stay warm!
      Have a fantastic week!

    2. Still waiting for Turkey sales here. We'll check out Walmart tomorrow. Don't you think the folks on TV have someone else buy their groceries for them? And have no idea whatsoever what they're talking about? I often do. --Elise

  5. That Scripture packs a powerful punch. It is very freeing to turn everything over to the Father. What do we gain by worrying?

Yup, we knew the mild weather would end. We certainly enjoyed it while it lasted. Still have some water to dip out of the rain containers. It will go into the greenhouse until needed.

Meijer had ground turkey marked down to $2.25 a pound. I use it for the dogs and we cooked four pounds of it with seasonings for our own use. The freezers are definitely full now! The talking heads don't always know (seldom) what they are talking about. I noticed that Meijer even has turkeys relatively cheap. Sweet potatoes are cheap so I will load up on those. Our harvest wasn't very big but the sweet potatoes are excellent. I roast sweet potatoes for the dog food and we like them cubed and roasted with carrots for a side dish.

Made a creamy sausage and cannellini bean soup for the Sabbath. I altered it a little to include potatoes. Think when we warm it up today I'll cut some Swiss chard or kale to add another dimension. Parsnips would be good in it but ours aren't ready yet. We'll have that today with cornbread. I will say the Farmer really likes my cornbread. I make it with almost all cornmeal, only a couple tablespoons of flour. Since we have lots of eggs the Farmer made an omelet this morning with crumbled turkey bacon and turkey sauce with some of the peppers from the garden that we froze. Poured country gravy over the top and it was delicious.

Now I need to walk to work off some of the breakfast!

    Stay warm, my friend!

Yes, Thursday, my neighbor was cleaning gutters and asked me what I had planned on that LAST day of SUMMER!!!! LOL
      Sure is how it seemed.
Meijer has .55/lb. turkeys and 'heads up' Kroger will have .49/lb. sweet potatoes this coming week!!!! As of Wed.! Deal for sure!
Oh, your soup sounds so good and hearty. Each change up sounds wonderful. I need to make cornbread soon - I love it.
      Stay warm there as well.

  6. Lovely sunny day here in Stockport England. Washing out on the line. Squirrels running around and busy sweeping the leaves and twigs. Had front wall rebuilt that someone crashed into at last. Thank you, Cheryl, for the timely prayer. Yes, let each days troubles be sufficient for the day.
I bought a few Christmas gifts this week. So that part is looking more manageable. I'm looking forward to the Kroger deals. Doesn't seem like we've had too many in our area. You've got to wonder if Good Morning America statistics are REALLY based on anyone who is feeding a family. Who comes up with this stuff?
Being a fan of herbal remedies and natural cures, I inventoried my tinctures and put a few more on order in anticipation of the winter season. The chickadees ( my grands) share germs freely. But then, I freely accept their kisses and hugs. Makes life worth living, germs and all!.

  9. It's been cold in our area, getting colder this coming week. At least there's no more snow forecasted. We got a light dusting this week that melted off in a few days.

Blue is fully healed up now and has her staples removed tomorrow. I'm curious to see what her weight is, as she's filled out now. She looks to be a "normal" weight for her breed. Hubs pointed out last night that we're still only in our 3rd week with her as our fur baby! It's hard to imagine when she wasn't part of our household already.

Grocery buys this week included a few Safeway sales and (from Amazon) a case of Krusteaz Almond Poppyseed muffin mix, 12 boxes, for $2.19 using Amazon points. Our meals were simple. One small London Broil roast became several meals and we also had breakfast for dinner to use up the farm fresh eggs, as I couldn't pass up the sale on 18 count eggs at Safeway. No turkey sales here yet.

My focus now is on getting the house ready for our oldest son's visit at Thanksgiving and getting Christmas gifts together. I bought a 40 count box of Hallmark Christmas cards for $11 and am very much looking forward to all the ideas from you, Cheryl, and from all your readers this week. God bless us, everyone!

  10. My best deal this week was ground pork for $2.99/lb. I like it for taco meat but I dislike the smell of it cooking. I also got lean ground beef for $3.49/lb. That might sound high to you and your readers in the US but those are definitely bargains here.
More snow fell here overnight but just a skiff, I won't bother shovelling it. Temperature was up too, only -13C (9F) this morning though it feels much colder in the wind. The birds were happy to see me filing the feeder. :)

    1. I agree - ground pork stinks when cooking. I don't like the smell either - but sure does taste good. No, those prices aren't bad at all. Ground beef might get a bit cheaper with a sale - but regular price is much higher.
I think we may have more snow this week - UGH. Sure glad I didn't have to move any of it yesterday. It melted on pavement with contact.
Those birds are always happy. I have birds that sit in the trees 'yelling at me' every morning - I put the seed out and down they come before I turn my back. They sure have us trained!

  12. What good deals! We had a turkey certificate from a local grocery store so picked up a 19 lb ($34) turkey for free!!!
I am an herbalist too…..many of the herbs can be found in the kitchen and many, many more foraged outside, for free! Examples include plantain, goldenrod, mulberry/blackberry/raspberry leaves, deadnettle, chickweed, feverfew, ginkgo, mullein, mallow, burdock, walnut leaves. Many mints (peppermint, catnip) and herbs (sage, chives, basil, oregano, lavender, lemon balm, bee balm) can be easily grown. As can purple coneflower or echinacea. A good and reliable source of information can be found at Healing Harvest Homestead. Heidi and her husband are Christians and integrous.

I use several 'weeds' as people call them - from the yard as well. I find it all very fascinating. There is so much out there we can use. God said He has given us what we need to heal our bodies, right here on earth. Thank you for the site - I will look it up.

  14. Count Kansas in on the weather whiplash! I was barefoot on Thursday and shivering on Friday! It's been cold ever since. I had 3 doc appts on Friday and it was windy and frigid. I'm not sick, these were just annual checkups. I despise going to the doc so I take one day and get them over with! Only one left is a mammogram next month.

I don't know if any market mails out their weekly ads anymore. Ours don't, which is really a bummer! I have to call up the ad online. I didn't realize that my ad popped up on page 2! I'm so glad I looked a second time or I would've missed the turkey! 79¢ lb. with a $25 purchase. So, we got one for a little over $10. I was happy with that. I love instant hot chocolate in winter, but like the low sugar kind. There was none last year. The name brand was more than $3! I'm used to paying $1 per box!! So, I was happy to find that for 3/$4. We got potatoes for 5#/$1.99. I also found Chex cereals for $2.49 box. We love Chex Mix to nosh on. Those were the only holiday type deals I saw. I hope that Wed. ad has the rest!!

I join you all in laughing at the media people for their thrifty suggestions that would land me in the poor house!! Tgiving has always been a good meal on the cheaper side. Add in that it would feed our family of five (when I was growing up) thru the long weekend and it's a steal! And we usually still had turkey sandwiches for school on Monday!! Nowadays I freeze a bunch. We also carried on a family tradition that my mom started after my parents divorced. I always called it Taco Bell Saturday. I went to my mom's for the long TG weekend. It was getting near dinner and she pops up and says she wants a turkey break and suggested Taco Bell. Well, someone else brought it up the following year and a tradition was born! Hubs and I now do it in my mom's memory. Silly, but it wouldn't be TG without Taco Bell Saturday and a few games of Racko! And now it's just the 2 of us.

I had a really busy week otherwise. Made some mixes, my cleaning laboratory, clothing repairs, pulled out winter gear, etc.
My husband readied the bird bath for winter and stored the little one. I also need to pick up some bird seed. All I have is suet cakes. We e been putting pecans out for the squirrels. Our friends have a pecan farm and sell last year's crop for squirrels. I'm surprised we don't have pecan trees cropping up everywhere with the way they scatter about burying them!!

Meals this week we're meatloaf and baked potatoes, breakfast, chili, bean enchiladas, and a couple of nights of freezer fast food. We also ate late lunches a couple of days and didn't have dinner.

Still reading the same books. We finished season 8 of Father Brown.Im looking forward to seeing Miss Scarlet and the Duke on PBS. All we really watch anymore are British mysteries. The other regular is Death in Paradise. I think the only American show is our local news for about 15 minutes each morning!! TV is such rubbish these days.

Elise, your comment about Blue made me remember that I told my husband I was worried I could never love a dog as much as I loved my coyote girl. Now I have my hairy little beast and I can't imagine life without him....

I like getting some gift items there as well. It is a fun place. I am going to keep watch of their ads until Christmas, for gift ideas.
      Have a wonderful week!

  18. I do love a genuine conversation with a stranger - I call it a drive by connection ;) I am not a religious person but I believe God is in those connections

    1. I do believe people are put in our path for a reason. Not sure what the reason - but I bet there is one! It is fun learning from others.
Kind of like we are all here for a reason. We lift each other up, we learn and we share. I think that is wonderful. Spirit moves us where we are needed.
      Have a wonderful week!

  19. I went to Aldi this morning---have never been on a Sunday at 9:30. Roads were empty! Yea! Scored 3 large packages of chicken thighs with sell by dates of tomorrow---at 50% off, so came home and put those in 2 crockpots and took meat off the bones. The gal who rang me up did not do the discount, so I had to get a refund on that. Glad I checked my receipt before leaving the store!

Our Aldi also has my very favorite apples back in stock (none at all last year). They are called Autumn Glory. I bought 5 bags!!

No back to 2019 markdowns at my store, either. Maybe the sale prices were that, but they did not mention the "rollback". I still got a lot for the $, as always.

Really enjoyed your message today, Cheryl, and I love reading the comments, too. Jane in Florida

    1. I have never been on Sunday morning. I have always wondered if there were less people.
Great deals!!! Score on the chicken and catching the mistake!
Never heard of that apple - must be a good one.

My store didn't really have signs that said 'rollback' - just had their regular yellow pricing signs - with a little white one underneath with new pricing.
They have been advertising the rollback thing - but the signs just have pricing in a different color.
Thank you! Glad to have you here Jane.
      Have a great week.

  20. Another busy week here. We've been busy purging paper that has accumulated. Husband saves all sorts of articles and newspaper clippings and then never looks at them again. I had old paperwork from my employment days that went into the shredder. Was able to get rid of a 2-drawer file cabinet, freeing up more storage space in the sewing room.
Used $10 in Aldi coupons and am going again today. I like 'investing' in groceries!
Dental checkup went well. Husband has his today.
We sold a few items last week, and I got enough money to buy a new platform bed frame. It will have 12" of clearance, so I can store more food and smaller bins of fabric under the bed. I'm keeping my mattress, but the box springs is going to the metal scrapper.
Thinking of getting a 10" tablet to use as an e-reader. So many library books are online only, and the cost of buying used books online is getting to be more than they are worth. Does anyone use a tablet that way? What do you think of it?

    1. Good for you on purging - it seems to be a never ending job.
So glad you are still getting the coupons for Aldi - you go girl. That is a great way to stock.
YAY on getting a new bed. That is on my wish list! More storage is always a plus!!!
I have a small tablet - but seldom use it. I like to hold a book - so really don't like it for books. I guess someday I may have to. It does make books ALWAYS accessible to you.
      Have a fantastic week.

  21. Oh isn't it wonderful when we find a kindred spirit at the grocery store? I just love that! I really love it when I'm in the near small town and run into a WWII or Korean War vet...Oh yes. We get along great. But it can be others too who we just really have such a nice conversation with, it makes our weeks doesn't it? One of my married daughters loves Ollies, I haven't been to one yet, not in my area but they sound wonderful.

Isn't it great that many of these stores still have one dollar and 98 cent gift bags even in the extra large size? And plenty cute rolls of wrapping paper too for 98 cents and a dollar? Can't figure out why people want to pay a lot for 'quality' for something that's going to get torn up! lol

It sounds like you and your kitties are staying nice and cozy, how nice and peaceful. Really sweet.

Love your scripture and prayer. Amen to that. : ) I'm just plodding along in my home gradually getting things ready in my little government here. I'm usually all about voicing things as my dad was a very honest and straight forward patriot and a city councilman, First Lieutenant army man, much like White Christmas type of guy when my dad was on one of his toughie days... but at this point...I'm being quiet and praying and listening to cheerful old vintage holiday music. I think my daddy would agree at this point. My husband is even getting into that mode and just can't take a whole lot of even normally trusted news. ...Love the scripture and prayer I reiterate. Yes ma'am. Amen. My husband today said he put on a trusted news guy who is a Christian and a wonderful person, but he just couldn't take it, turned it off and put Lyle Lovett's cornbread church song on. *big smile*

I'm cozy here down south of you, rainy and cool. I made cucuzza soup with lentils and will add some protein thin spaghetti on the side to put in the soup. Cozy supper and then I'm going to put on the old movie, The Postman Rings Twice with Lana Turner and John Garfield. Don't know how cozy that is but it makes for a nice planned evening. That movie is paying on 'Movies!' channel btw on antenna television.

Have a sweet week, I sure enjoyed your post! God bless you Cheryl real good!

    1. I do enjoy meeting new people. It seems they are put in our path for a reason. I asked her a simple question about something she was buying (what she used it for), and that led to all sorts of conversation! Kindred souls.
I don't understand why people send so much money on wrappings either. In the trash it goes - what a waste. I have even used the comics for the kids before. They get a kick out of it.
News gets me down - I just can't do it much. I do watch local news in the morning - as I like the newscasters. Even at that I hear things that just get my goat!
There isn't a lot I believe from the news today. It seems they make it up as they go.
I like old movies. I have noticed a lot of them on lately. I think that happens a lot around the holidays. I have recorded several to watch later in the winter.

      Have a fantastic week!
