Howdy all. It is a dreary and wet morning here. My thermometer says 57*, and it won't get much warmer today. At least no snow! It looks to stay this way temp wise for the next week. Fine with me!
We got a lot of rain last evening and overnight, sure is helping to rid us of drought warnings. October was basically bone dry.
Along with living with a little less, means often not running to the store at every moment when we run out of things. Most times we don't just get what we went for, but more - plus we are spending gas and time. Knowing substitutes is fun and works to save a little bit of money.
You can still cook and bake with subs!

It is that time that many people use cream of soups in cooking. Make your own!!! Super easy and it tastes good. You can sub chicken bouillon for beef or whatever you have to make different flavors.
It is nice to have on hand, even for just adding to your own soup to thicken things up a bit.
Take time to think for a minute, if you are missing an ingredient. Do a moment of research and you can almost always find an alternative. Sure does save money - not running out for one item, and it really can taste better too.
Hope you all have a great weekend. It is time to maybe get those outdoor decorations out while the weather is still decent, or get the pantries in order, or work on the canning or crafts. Just enjoy whatever you do.
Have a lovely day!!!!
Tommy is always surprised when I tell him I can sub something else when he thinks I need a trip to the store. He was horrified when I was going to sub olive oil for oil in boxed brownies, swearing he would not eat them. He did and enjoyed them.
ReplyDeleteI only use olive oil in my brownies. Some think it is weird - but I have done that for years. I once had someone aske what makes my brownies so special - LOL olive oil!
Delete42 and pouring down rain here in the South. So thankful for the rain!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are getting rain if you need it. Have a super day!
DeleteOlive oil is our oil of choice. Unless you are using an infused oil, no one will know that you used olive oil. Reminds me of a funny story I once read: A young bride thought she was being frugal by using the Italian bread left from their dinner the night before to make French toast for breakfast. Not so good after all; she forgot it had lots of garlic on it!
ReplyDeleteWe had almost 3/4 inch of rain last night and supposedly more rain is expected for the next three days. Good thing the Farmer cleaned out the gutters a few days ago.
I pinned and wrote in my quotes book the quote about frugality. Also pinned the French onion soup knockoff recipe. It's good to know what is in your food. If people did research about what is in some restaurant food, they probably would stay home and cook their own meals.
Enjoy your weekend! Snuggle with the bitty kitties!
It is my oil of choice as well. That is funny - no garlic would not be good in French toast!!
DeleteI still need my gutters cleaned - a neighbor is going to do it for me - but a lot washed out last night!
Oh yes, if people actually knew what all went on in restaurants - it would turn their stomachs. I have known too many people that have worked in 'nice' restaurants and the stories!!! Oh my.
Have a kitty snuggled with me right now - my Blackie!
Happy Thursday Cheryl. This is a good reminder for everyone to use the substitutes when needed. We had rain all day yesterday and today it is cloudy and chilly. I had to turn the heat on for the first time this season yesterday. When I got home from work TBG and Binx were both cold. lol But it's set at 65 or else I can't sleep. Enjoy the rest of your day.
ReplyDeleteI have only turned mine on a few times, when kitties go and sit on the register, I figure they are cold!! I like it chilly at night too.
DeleteIt is sprinkling and gloomy here - just kind of a icky day! Thanks!
We had rain this morning, and I'll take that over snow any time.
ReplyDeleteI was out grocery shopping today and soup prices are sitting between $3-4 a can! No thanks, I'll make my own.
Yep, I would rather have rain too!
DeleteThat is very expensive - wow. Homemade is so easy and it sure will taste better.
Several years ago, for health reasons I needed to stop eating oil all together. At first I had no idea how I was going to make bread, muffins, etc., but eventually figured out I could substitute applesauce in a lot of things and you never even know! Now I make cornbread with applesauce instead of oil, and a fringe benefit is applesauce is less expensive than the oil I had been using! Not I am more apt to at least try something ONCE to see if a less expensive substitute will turn out “good enough!”
ReplyDeleteThere you go - proof folks! Yes, applesauce can be used in so many things. It is fun to try out new subs to me. All we can do is try! Sometimes it makes it even better than before.
DeleteBack when egg prices first skyrocketed (during Covid? shortly thereafter?), I bought some flaxseed and experimented with a substitution to make an egg substitute. It worked well in some recipes, and this post made me remember that I have about 1/2 bag of flax seed in my pantry. With the prices of eggs these days, I'm thankful to you for this post, as substitutes are a good money-saving technique. We all know that if we go to the grocery store for that one missing ingredient, we'll walk out with at least two bags of stuff.
ReplyDeleteLove this - another proof it works! You guys are what make these posts believable for all. Thanks.
DeleteYou got that right - at least 2 bags full!!! I can truly not remember ever going in for one thing and only getting that!
I love making substitutions!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I've found I can leave out the missing ingredient altogether and don't need to run to the store for it.
There was one time we were at my in-laws and MIL went to make everyone sandwiches and discovered she didn't have enough mayonnaise. She handed me a $5 and asked me to run to the store. Which I did. I chuckled to myself though because if that had been me everyone would've gotten mustard instead! Lol I don't run to the store for one thing.
I often use less of things. Less oil or 1 less egg. Less sugar - I haven't found it to be noticeable.
DeleteYes mam, it would have been mustard or catsup then at my house!
Ha! I like substitutions also, but if I'd ended up with mustard on my sandwich I'd have been very sad. I don't care for mustard, and seldom use it except lightly as seasoning in bean recipies and devilled eggs! :D
DeleteMaryB
Guess we all have different likes. I might have done even ranch dressing instead of going out for mayo! I do like mustard - I can't have a burger without it!
DeleteYes MaryB, I understand that! I wouldn't do that to anyone who doesn't eat mustard. In that case I'd probably serve something else. But my family eats mustard so they learned early it could be one or the other.
DeleteI’ve just caught up with the posts from this week after having a few nights away.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to read everyone’s thoughts and ideas. Such a wonderful sharing of information.
I’m a great one for substitutes, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I regard recipes as suggested guidelines, not carved in stone, and rarely follow them to the letter.
Take care, Louise
Glad to have you back and that you got caught up. It is a good group - love how everyone shares.
DeleteI am the same way - kind of guidelines. I stick fairly close in baking but do tend to cut back on things. Cooking - recipes are not something I use much at all. Glen used to like a dinner and say make that again - uuummmm have no idea what all I put in it!!!!
So funny, I always tell my people my cooking is impossible to replicate ( because I can never remember what went in it)
DeleteI did try a new recipie this week that was shortbread made with a can of condensed milk. Very easy, very cheap and decent tasting. Nothing like made properly with butter, but was okay for workers for morning coffee break. I’m already thinking of how to “improve” it for next time.
Have a great weekend, Louise
Hiya Cheryl, we had some nice days but back to rain today.
ReplyDeleteOn the 29th October I was at ATM ( what do you call a cash machine)to get £150 . The machine did not give me any money but was taken out of my account. To date I’ve not got it back. My own bank said it’s about 15 working days for them to return the money.
Finger’s crossed.
Sylvia
Glad you got some nice days - I remember you were getting lots of rain (I think).
DeleteATM is what we call them too. Golly, I am sorry that happened. That could be really devastating for some people to not have the funds for that long. That is another thing I have never used - an ATM machine. I guess I am just old fashioned.
Many years ago I realized how much it was costing to run to the store once a week. I always seemed to put something extra in the cart. Now I go once every two weeks and if I run out of something I do without or make substitutions. Saves lots, especially when one needs to use things up.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Very smart lady. That is a great plan and sure stops all the extras. Substitutions can sure save a lot of money and time.
DeleteDue to eating gluten free and low histamine it's all about substitutions in my kitchen. Tomatoes are off the menu for me, but I make a mean no'mato sauce with carrots , beets and Italian seasoning and a little apple cider vinegar for the acidity of a tomatoe and no one knows the difference when I serve it for pasta or chicken caccitorre among other things. Real mayo also too high in histamine, but I do make a sub that tastes like the real thing as well using evoo, water, mustard powder, honey, salt rice flour and xanthine gum. For cookies and other baked goods -- no flour - no problem. Three ingredient peanut butter cookies, flour free brownies that use only chocolate chips and eggs, found a recipe this week that uses unsweetened cocoa powder instead of flour. They were delicious. Cold and rainy here today. We decided to go to the new WW11 museum here. It was amazing.
ReplyDeleteCookie
That sounds interesting on the sauce. I can't imagine not being able to eat tomatoes. Gosh, I love them. I feel for you. You have some great subs listed. It is pretty amazing the yummy things you can make so differently. Thanks for letting everyone know.
DeleteI bet you had a nice time on an icky day.
I would be interested Cookie, if you'd care to share the page for the sauce & the flour free brownies. We need more gluten free options and to lower the histamine levels too. Thank you! Ann Austin
DeleteI cannot eat mustard on sandwich, just a bit in something for flavor. It is not always what a person likes.
ReplyDeleteAs Cookie told us above, there are many ways to make tasty substitutions, when you can't eat something.
DeleteGlad I have no allergies.
:) You and me both. I would have substituted butter for mayo. Certainly not the same, though. I know people who love mustard. My MIL always made sandwiches with butter, maybe other flavors in also, but *always* butter.
DeleteI would have been annoyed to have to run to the store for mayo, that would have seemed a bit over the top. Guess that's where our Frugal Backup Storage comes in. :)
This fool hurricane has gotten me into using some of my backup stuff, so now I need to work on replacing those items along with things that had to be trashed because they went bad with no refrigeration. More expensive months coming here, for sure.
MaryB
So many ways substitute - it just takes a little imagination.
DeleteWell, there you go - the reason we have that back-up pantry! I bet you were sure glad you had it. That is an example of an emergency situation that we don't plan on - and having goods to get us through it.
Now that the 'season' is basically over - you can take time and slowly rebuild your stock as you find things. You will have it back to normal or even better before you know it.
I am sure glad you had your pantry items on hand!!!
