Weekly Wrap Up 11/24

Hello to all.  Happy Sunday.  Goodness, here we are at the last Sunday of November!  One month from today is Christmas Eve!!!  Time flies when you're having fun!  So they say.
I hope this finds everyone well and safe.
It is cool this morning, maybe going into the 50's.  Looks to be the best day of the week.  Come Tuesday, temps start to fall, and it will get much colder for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

We finally got our first freeze of the season this past week.  They said it had been 229 days since the last freeze!  We got snow on Thursday, maybe an inch or two - then Friday morning it was gone.  Yep, it warmed up overnight and it was all gone.  I can do that kind of snow!
My frugal week:
  • First of the week was warm- so I put the garden all to bed for the season.  Soakers put away, and garden weed shield removed.  I did leave a couple cabbage plants in - just to see what happens!
  • Raked all the leaves again, and got those and the previously raked leaves all on the garden
  • Rain barrels emptied and put away
  • I did get out the cords for the heated water bowls and the snow shovel out
  • Cleaned the filter of the kitchen faucet as mentioned earlier in week
  • I cut 4 roses on Sunday, and they lasted almost all week.  So sweet smelling
  • I mowed the entire yard one more time
  • Put extra bedding in the greenhouse for Licorice
  • I did run to Ollie's to use my 15% coupon on entire purchase.  Got some basket stuffers, a couple things for kiddos.
  • Made a small pot of chicken, noodle & veggie soup
  • Changed out handbag
  • Doing a lot of cleaning - moving some things in the kitchen around
  • Had 3 days that I got open windows for fresh air
  • Made a nice fruit milkshake for a treat one day
  • Working on some sewing
Meals this past week:
Roast & veggies
Pasta w/sauce, pork schnitzel, toms & cukes
Homemade rice a roni, fried green tomatoes
Leftover rice and salad
Soup - homemade
Cup of soup and a tomato sandwich
'Poor man's' Swiss steak and mashed potatoes

I want to say a special thank you to Mary B and Cookie for the lovely cards I received this week.  So thoughtful of you.

How was your week?  Is the nasty weather of winter in your area?  I guess it is time - it held out here past normal time. Have you done any crafting or shopping for the holidays.
Are you ready for turkey day here in the US?
I will post on Tuesday, probably something light on Wed. - most people will be getting ready for Thanksgiving and not looking to read blogs!  No Thursday blog - then maybe a Friday one!

If you are so busy this week that you don't make it back - have a great holiday with family and/or friends.  Safe travels to all.

Prayers for all that you may stay safe, healthy and warm this coming week.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17

Dear Lord, as we enter this week of thanks for all that we have, we humbly ask that You hold each one tight and keep them safe and healthy.  May each person take time to say thank you for all the wonderful gifts received in life, as we are so blessed.  May we all be thankful every day, not just this week.  Thank you for all the beauty of the seasons and joys of families and friends.  AMEN

  2. Oh, yes, winter is here with >4" of snow yesterday. There will be some major shoveling to do, my exercise for the day. I walked only 3 miles this past week. Went out for lunch one day with friends then enjoyed an afternoon of playing cross crib. On another day, I joined friends at a seniors' dinner sponsored by the local FCSS (family & community support services). It was a delicious meal & the hall was so beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. I enjoyed the company of the neighbor little on Friday. We did some painting & crafting leaving the place mostly unscathed. It helps to clean as we go! I'm making peanut brittle for a fundraiser craft fair at the assisted living lodge where mom lived. Only one more batch to go. I finished the 11th season of Call the Midwife. It's a favorite series of mine so illustrative of community nursing. I've also been indulging in some Hallmark channel Christmas movies. I know! I know! Not to everyone's taste but enjoy the over-the-top decorations & the fluffy story lines at the end of a day. In the kitchen: roasted broccoli with garlic; hot dog w/ beans; pasta w/ meat balls; sausage & bean soup. Happy Thanksgiving to all south of the 49th.

    1. Sounds like some fun times this past week. Oh, spending time with the littles is so precious.
How sweet to make the peanut brittle.
I used to watch all the Hallmark movies - believe it or not - they some of Glen's favorite things at the holidays! I haven't watched Hallmark since he passed. I see other holiday movies, but just can't watch many things we watched together.
      Your meals sound good.
Enjoy your week and stay safe.

  3. Snow on and off here, followed by rain and high winds from Storm Bert. I have sat each morning making Christmas cards with my son and have also started stitching some felt ornaments to put in with Christmas gift baskets

    4. Joyce - thank you for giving us a name to pray for. I feel so bad for you going through all of this. We sure have a lot of seasons in life - some good and some stink. I look forward to hearing that it is gone as well.
Eat well as you can, get rest, pray and God will do the rest.
      Many prayers deal lady!

  6. Funny, I can tell when it is time to turn up the heat - Bitsy goes and sits on the register and turns and gives me a look - as if to say 'mom, I'm cold'! Glad your kitty enjoyed it.
It is lovely here today - started chilly, but I have a couple windows open at the moment! We have to take advantage of those moments.
I am sure you are making great progress on the mess.
    Thank you.
    Have a blessed week.

  7. Hi Cheryl, sounds like our weather is similar here except for the snow. We did get frost a couple of nights ago.
We’ve been enjoying watching a live bird feeder in Ohio on YouTube lately. Makes me amazed and so thankful for all God’s varied creatures. I can’t even name all of them…(must look them up). Our kitty has started watching tv now😝 She loves watching the birds; she can’t get to them, but they still keep her eye.
So glad Licorice has you to help him keep warm and fed.
We had irises in bloom til the frost..and petunias. We’ve had a really nice long Indian Summer.
Have a wonderful week; I’ll be here to read your posts this week☺️

    1. The weather has been a bit crazy. I have a feeder on the front porch and a full glass storm door - it is kitty TV here. Bitsy loves watching them and sometime blackie does too. It is so amazing how many varied critters there are and they all have a purpose. Today I walked out back, and 2 squirrels came running up to me and stood up - asking for peanuts! Amazing.
I still have some geraniums looking pretty - everything pretty much bit the dust this week.
      Thanks. I'll be here.
      Have a super week.

  9. No snow yet. The temperatures have dipped and seem to be staying. No more 80 degree days. The garden was put to sleep a long time ago. I still have one raised bed that has fall crops in it. I have harvested mulitple times this week. I am making Zuppa Tuscano tomorrow with potatoes and spinach from my garden. I try to harvest from that spot through December, January and February. I put up the tunnel a few weeks ago and so far so good.
I also did a lot of cleaning for Christmas. Wiped down walls, washed windows, deep cleaned the kitchen and did floors. I am ready for next week.

    1. Yep, I think the summer weather is done until spring! Nice that you have tunnels set up - that keeps things going longer.
Your soup sounds wonderful. Even better that you can put fresh veggies in it.
I hope you week goes smoothly. Tis that time of year for cleaning!
      Have a great week.

  10. Hi Cheryl,
Lovely prayer, thank you. It is amazing that the snow is falling, seems like it was just summer. Well the snow isn’t falling here in central Arizona but you had some, and the upper parts of the US had theirs as well. I went to a church thanksgiving dinner today, and have started a new tradition ;). We had to wait for our table to be called to go to the buffet, but the dessert tables were available, so I started my meal with pumpkin pie, then later had turkey etc. it actually worked out beautifully since I was hungry when I ate the pie, then didn’t overeat the rest of the meal ;). So if you are a rule breaker, and love pie…it is something to try. Happy Thanksgiving, Hilogene in Az.

    1. Glad you don't have snow. It didn't last long here, but I have to admit it was pretty.
Sounds like a nice new tradition to start! Nothing wrong with pie first. I am glad you have a church family to do things with.
Hope you have a wonderful week and holiday!

  12. It is the season of being thankful; however, that should be a daily thing. Where would be be without the Father?

It was a nice week to get a few things done outside - despite the snow that melted quickly. Today was pretty nice. The Farmer had cut the last of the roses before the snow. We still have turnips to harvest. They have grown quite large, bigger than a croquet ball, today's was 1.6 pounds.

Erin bought one of the 33 cents a pound turkey from Meijer to cook and take into work for her staff. They contribute sides and have a meal together. She said that Big Lots was purchased and it looks like maybe her store will stay open. We found some things set out for large trash pickup and she got a card table for her basement and a vintage high chair. The chair will be cute sanded and repainted.

    See you Tuesday!

    1. Yes, being thankful should be a daily thing - I know that is first in all my prayers - just saying thank you.
It turned out to be a very lovely day. I got some things done outdoors and even had a couple windows open.
How nice of Erin to cook the turkey for work. Nice that places still have dinners like that. I remember those from the past. Glad her store is staying open. I asked the last time I was in one I go to - and they said it is planning on continuing as as well.
      Nice finds.
      Have a lovely week.

  15. Good morning, Cheryl. I'm so glad you received the card and you're very welcome. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I have been getting ready all week in the way of cooking something for it everyday. Now everything but the turkey and the pies are done. I will do the pies Wednesday and the turkey will go in after the Macy's parade on Thursday. I like to get everything done ahead, frozen and ready to go so that I can spend more time with family and any guests.
Weatherwise it's been a mixed bag of warm, very cold, rain and snow and then warm again. Craftwise I've been working on Christmas cards and December birthday cards. I got a lovely gift from a dear friend this week of two huge butternut squashes and two enormous heads of broccoli from her garden. The butternuts will be used instead of pumpkin for pies. Wishing all a Happy Thanksgiving. Cookie

    1. It sounds like you have it all going on for turkey day! Like the idea of using the squash instead of pumpkin. What a nice gift.
It is good to get things done ahead of time. I bet it will all be so yummy.
The card was just so pretty. I have last years out as well - they are pretty accents.
Have a fantastic week and don't over do it.

  17. Happy Thanksgiving Cheryl! I just wanted to say that, and that I really appreciate your blog. I have read many of your posts this year. Prayers to those who need them, to the Lord who health me and blessings to all.
I honestly enjoy the prayers you post & I always need reminders to try and save more. It has been a very difficult year but also a very good year. Now if only I could eliminate those pesty groundhogs! They ate up all my flowers and the veggie garden. They are so destructive! Santa bring me a sure fire way ! Grin
    Peace to all. Ann Austin.

    1. Hi Ann. So glad to have you here. I always love seeing a post from long time readers. Glad you took a moment to post.
Thank you for your kind words. I think we all need words of encouragement for both our spiritual mindset and our frugal mindset.
I tried so many things to get rid of groundhogs and the only thing that worked for me, was live trapping and rehoming down by the river. I know not everywhere lets you trap and release - but you might check that out. They loved romaine lettuce and strawberries at my house (for trapping). They ate my phlox for many years and my green bean plants. I can understand your frustration.
Have a wonderful holiday and a great week. Please post again, whenever you feel like it.
