Thursday Tidbits!

Howdy all.  Here we are close to the end of another week.  We woke to the 20's this morning - much better than zero or below.  It is still cold, but just not bitter cold.  Cloudy and grey.  Looking forward to the weekend when things warm up a bit.  In 9 days it will be February and the end of this looooong month of icky January!
Yes, the simple things.  Yesterday I looked out and the chickens were out grazing 2 doors down.  They were really enjoying themselves.  I have so many types of birds that show up.  The squirrels are a hoot to watch.
My kitties make me laugh sometimes.  Most evenings they each sleep on each end of the love seat.  It has a cover over it - when I get up, Bitsy's end is all scrunched up, as he makes a 'nest' in it to sleep.  He likes being under covers!  Blackie just curls up in his own corner, totally unamused.
Licorice was waiting at the door this morning, wanting his breakfast.  He eats then goes in the greenhouse and naps!  He is so sweet, I just wish he would let me pet him.  We are getting closer, I think.
Yesterday the sunrise was a glorious painting.  We have all enjoyed the full moon that was present for a while.  Isn't that neat - no matter where we live in this world - we all get to see the same big old moon!  That still makes me giggle like a kid sometimes!  Doesn't take a lot to amuse me!!
I have my sweet little home and food on my table.  Lovely family and friends.
The joys of a good and sweet life.

The southside lost quite an advocate this week.  We all called him Mr. Southside.  He was a huge influence on a lot of people.  He helped to start the alumni program at our high school, had reunions at our grade school, and was huge into influencing our youth in sports programs for decades. The ultimate little league coach.  Huge and loving family man, and a friend to all that met him.  Such a good guy.  He fell right before Thanksgiving and hit his head - and was disoriented.  On 11/27 he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.  He didn't even know he was ill!  He passed on Monday - not even 2 months later.  He was just 8 years older than me.
I mention this to point out how quickly life can change.  You never know.  Life changes in a blink of an eye.
So YES, enjoy all the simple things and live your life with gusto.  Do the fun things, do the silly things, and just ENJOY.  Strive to be the best you can be!

I promised an address to look for those mushroom kits.
Try - backtotheroots.com
It was mentioned here that Target sells them as well as Menard's.  At least you can check online, if you can't find locally.
They weren't super cheap - about $12 a kit, but you are growing something in the winter in your house, it is 100% organic, it's good to eat and FUN!
I need to do some sprouts in the next week or so as well!

What is everyone up to today?  Do you have big plans?
I hope those who got a rare snow are all safe and actually got to enjoy the snow a bit.  I saw pics this morning on the news of someone playing hockey on the icy streets of New Orleans!  Good example of enjoying the situation!
My great niece lives in Georgia and they were all home for 2 days and making snow angels and snowmen!  A rare treat for her and her teenage kiddos.

I think I am off to do a bit of cabinet cleaning - both inside and out!

Have a beautiful day my friends.
Carpe diem!!!!!

  1. Your comment about all having the same moon reminded me of when I was probably 7 or 8 years old. We had been at my grandparents farm and I was lying in the back seat of the car watching the moon. When we got home I told my Dad that grandma's moon followed us all the way home. He broke the news to me that there is only one moon. I thought everyone had their own moon and I was pretty sad to learn there was only one. Yes, I was an odd child. Enjoy your day!!

    1. What a cute story. I guess in some way grandma's moon followed you home - you both got to enjoy it!
The innocence of being a child!

    2. When I was little we sang songs to the moon -
"Oh mister moon, moon, silvery silvery moon,
Won't you please shine down on me!"
      and
"Moon beams shining, soft and low, this I beg of you,
Find the one I dearly love, tell him I'll e'er be true!"

    1. How fun!!! Some of the children of the south have never experienced snow in their lives. I think it must be quite an adventure and treat!

  3. I did some cabinet cleaning yesterday. A home was found for a set of glass ware that's been taking up space on a top shelf so washed & packed them. One thing leads to another & soon all the top shelves were cleaned & more items culled. It's one of those things that no one will notice but me.

    1. That is what I am afraid of - one thing leads to another!! I started moving things around on the little bit of counter space I have yesterday afternoon - now I want to dig in. Under the sink is my start! YIKES!!
It does make you feel better even though no one else knows!

  4. So sorry to hear of the loss of a local icon. Sounds like he loved his community.

'Tis a bit warmer today. Looks like some low 40's will be here over the weekend. I mustn't complain...it's winter. We keep busy and that makes the gloomy days go by better. Finally going to clean out the old record cabinet that holds dry goods. Alana sent me a gift card for the holiday so I bought a new shop vac with attachments. I'll use it to sweep up dust and debris. Probably some things in the cabinet need to be tossed out.

Some of our fur babies like to be totally covered. Jacob is always completely covered and when he sits with me on the couch, he wants under the blanket. I like to be totally covered when I sleep, right up to my chin. When I was little our house did not have a furnace, just an oil stove in the living room. My mom would warm a sheet blanket on the stove and wrap it around my feet and legs. Almost like a hot water bottle. Wonder if anyone makes sheet blankets these days?

Enjoy your weekend! When a person is retired it doesn't always seem like a weekend, though.

    1. Thank you - he was a great icon and ambassador and everyone loved him. Just one of those kinds of people.
I just went out to take out some trash and fill the feed bins. I then got in the garage and got out the small rake. I raked around the squirrel feeds. Got stuff into a pile - not picked up. Didn't even get chilly!
Bitsy loves covers. I think it is cute. I am usually covered except one foot! Yep, I am one of those. Can't be too hot - or I am miserable. I remember sheets blankets. I really liked them - mom always had several. I may have to look for those again.
Every day is the same for me - 7 day weekends!
