Weekly Wrap Up 3/30

Hello all.  Happy Sunday.  I pray this finds you well and safe.  Here's hoping that you made it through any obstacles thrown at you this past week and did it with grace.
It is another warmer morning here and it is very damp and gray.  Looks as if we are to get some nasty storms later in the day and evening.  Prayers said that they aren't too bad.  It will cooling a bit this coming week, but nothing too bad.
The world is sure coming back to life around here.  The grass is green and growing (as are the weeds), the trees are all budding.  You can see a haze of color around every tree - it may be shades of green, burgundy, bronze, etc.  It is something to see.  The magnolias actually got to be enjoyed this year and are still just beautiful.
It has been very lovely temp wise the past few days, but windy - oh, those spring winds!

Oh, my alley got resurfaced this week!  There was a crater at one end that seriously could eat a car (2' deep and half the width of alley & as long).  It is the 2nd time in 39 years that I have seen them do ANYTHING to the alley! It is the first time in years that there hasn't been a puddle behind my yard after rain!  It sure is nice for the time being.  We are all very thankful.

My frugal week:
  • Lots of laundry and only used the dryer to fluff
  • Made several hard boiled eggs
  • Picked more daffodils and some hyacinths again this week - 2X
  • Made a small batch of frozen fruit 'cream' - yummy (strawberry/banana)
  • I did go out and do my monthly gas fill-up.  Used my points and gas was 2.47/gal.
  • Received some nice coupons in the mail from Kroger - good until June
  • Been refilling baskets, bins and jars with items to replace items used (from my stock)
  • Did a 'sort of' mow!  Used the weed whacker out front to knock down higher weeds/grass
  • Worked in a couple of flower beds, cleaning this week
  • Worked on building a platform for pots out back.  Thought I was going to visit Oz!  I was carrying 6' - 2" x 6" boards and thought the wind was going to lift me up when it would catch the ends of boards!  I bet I was a sight to see.
  • Got to have windows open and air house and heat has been off for several days. Friday was 80*F!  Next week will be cooler - in 50's and 60's.
  • I got some walks in and talked with some neighbors doing the same
  • Using leftovers and cooking from home
  • Just doing all the basics
Meals this past week:
2 chicken sliders, fries and salad
Tuna melt, Au Gratin potatoes, pickles
Au Gratin pots, scrambled eggs, 2 sausage patties
Cheeseburger and salad
Broc./cheese soup (freezer) over elbow macaroni and rolls (freezer)
Chef salad (w/everything)
Fish sandwich, tots and slaw
SNACKS:  fruit, toast & peanut butter, nuts

How was your week?  Did you get any deals this week or using what you have?  Have you stayed safe from all the nasty weather?
I know we are all ready for spring and planting and heck, even mowing.  Some of our friends up north are still getting frigid temps and snow - sure hope spring comes to you soon!

Prayers for all the people involved in the horrible earthquakes on the other side of the world.  That is just so sad.
May you all have a lovely week ahead and may you all be safe and healthy.  Life throws us some curve balls on a regular basis, but with faith and perseverance we can get through.  May you keep going and be successful in whatever you do.
Blessings to you and yours from me at my humble little home.
*****************************

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you.  Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. Be sober, be watchful.
1 Peter 5:6-8

Dear Lord, again we say grateful thanks for all our blessings.  We ask that You please be with each person that is suffering anxieties and insecurities, to let them know that You are in control.  May we all have the faith needed to live a happy and restful life in the love of Your arms and teachings.  We know You have the ultimate control, so please calm our hearts and minds.  AMEN

  2. I wasn't looking however, I got 6 rolls of Jimmy Dean Sage sausage marked down to $1.64 each. I make 4 servings from a roll so a whopping for $0.43 each (6% sales tax here). YUMMY!!!!

  3. Excellent devotional! Those few verses in 1Peter very succinctly give us hope and assurance.

Good thing the crater in the alley was filled in. Some craters on the roads aren't noticeable until, boom, you've hit it with your car. I told the Farmer it takes two of us to drive anywhere.

Everything is greening up nicely. Peonies are up, Autumn Joy sedum is going to town, the usual spring bulbs are blooming, the lilacs are coming out, and the old-fashioned lilac already has small buds. We have to cover all our garden beds as the dastardly squirrels dig in them. They even dug in the green onion planter, unearthing a few onions, although it was covered with netting. I need to measure all the beds we want to protect so we can make frames for netting or row cover. The squirrels have even dug in the asparagus bed.

So many serious weather events all over the world. The latest earthquakes were devastating.

Erin's oldest cat Howie, seems to have the same dental and mouth issues that Blackie had. She got some medication for him, so she'll have to see how it works, or not.

BTW, how do keep your daffodils looking good after picking them? I've never had any success keeping a bouquet for any time at all.

    1. Thank you. Oh the potholes are horrendous. You really have to be watching ahead at all times. I probably drive a little slower too. I can only imagine how many people had damage on the hole at night! There is no light there.
It is wonderful all the things popping out. My peonies are probably 4-5" tall now. So many shades of green - it is amazing. I change the water each day on the daffies. They seem to last many days. Yep, those squirrels dig everywhere, planting their food stuffs. We truly have to give them credit though, they are the best preppers ever!
Oh poor kitty. I sure hope they can help it. The tooth surgery is pretty rough if they have it done. If it was ever an outdoor cat - the vet says it is common.
      Have a beautiful week.

  4. Lots of wind here too.
Laundry dried out on the lines.
I tried to clean out some flower beds but the wind was constantly against me so gave up for the moment.
Everything eaten this week was out of the fridge and at home.
I really wanted to plant some garden but, in looking at the weather report decided to hold off for fear of the seed potatoes and onions rotting from too much rain.
Plenty to do in the house on wet days, but enjoying my time spent outside when weather allows.
Windows open when warm enough, fresh air is always a plus.

    1. The wind has been nuts. I did some, but you are right, you have to constantly fight the wind. It gets very tiring.
Garden will wait a while here too. I never get in much of a hurry and it always does well.
That fresh air is just lovely.
Enjoy the blessings of the week.

  5. Good morning Cheryl, prayers headed your way that the storms are mild. Here in Phoenix, we had a few unusually hot days for this time of year, and we were all muttering ;). Thankfully temps are dropping back to the wonderful range this upcoming week. All good here, I am glad to be alive, this a great time of year, plus gratitude is my new focal point. Wishing you the best, Hilogene in Az.

    1. Hi Hilogene. Always good to see you post. Thank you, I hope the storms aren't too bad. Covers most of the state for tonight.
Glad it will be cooling off for you. It is a wonderful time of the year (except allergies). So much to see and enjoy. Gratitude is a wonderful focal point!!!!!!
      Have a lovely week.

  6. No green in sight here. The anticipated spring snowstorm dumped ~6" of snow last Thursday. I cancelled 2 appts & hunkered down. I haven't left home since last Sat when I returned from the city 2hrs away. I had spent 4 days with my friend (recovering from her 2nd hip replacement) in her downtown city condo. Her recovery is going well. I was happy on many levels to return to my country home where there are more deer than people. I was able to visit my cousin who remains in CICU after a ruptured aorta. Her recovery is progressing as well. And I also got to visit with an old neighbor who lives across the street from my friend. I'm happy to report that I walked 30 miles this past month. Health screenings done. I'm aging out of some screenings; even the docs don't want to look at it anymore! More front end assessment required when the car had an oil change. Always something. In the kitchen: pork steak w/ sauerkraut & mashed potatoes; carrot/lentil/rice soup; pulled pork & coleslaw; baked penne pasta; brownies. The fridge is quite bare waiting for the 10% off Tuesday shopping day next wk. And yet I'm able to enjoy good food with a little ingenuity & effort. Have a good week, Cheryl.

    1. Maaaannnn - ick on the snow. I don't blame you I would stay home too. So nice of you to help your friend. I am sure it was appreciated.
Home is the best place to be. I tend to like animals more than a lot of people! LOL. Sounds like you got a lot of visiting in and glad people are recouping. Great on the walking - that is a lot.
Yes, it seems to always be something. Such is life, huh?
Your meals sound wonderful to me. A little creativity is all it takes. Happy shopping.
      Have a great week.

  7. Still winter here, though this week looks to be bringing warmer weather and some sunshine. I am looking forward to seeing some green in the next few weeks.
Here's hoping the winds and storms aren't too bad. Those poor folks in Myranmar. I understand that at least 1700 people were lost. I live in a town of about 4,500, that would be about 40% of our community. So devastating.

    1. So sorry you have no spring yet. Soon! Here is hoping for you.
I hope all is safe here as well, the one 'good' thing about spring storms is there are no leaves on the trees thus little resistance. It just blows on through them. I sure hope it isn't as bad as they say it could be.
I know - the earthquake was so devastating. Weather is something we all love, yet it can sure mess things up.
      Have a beautiful week.

  8. It is sunny here right now, but storms are supposed to roll in sometime after 1. 80mph winds are predicted with hail, rain and possible tornados.
Your meals all sound really good. I haven't had au gratin potatoes in a long time and now that you've mentioned them, I'll have to make some soon.
Kroger points really add up for great savings on gas, don't they? I usually always save between 40 and 60 cents a gallon and I really don't spend that much there.
Stay safe and enjoy your Sunday!!

    1. I am hoping the sun doesn't come out here, as they say that will worsen the storm. That sounds wicked. I sure hope you stay safe!
Thanks. I made a small batch of them, as they sounded good to me as well. It had been a while - but how do you go wrong - potatoes and cheese!
I don't spend that much there either but often go on Friday when they double points - that really helps a lot. Any savings is great in my book.
Prayers for your safety and have a good week.

    2. Yes double point Friday is when I've started shopping now. It adds up fast, especially when I only need to fill up once or twice a month.

    3. I agree. I fill up once a month and save a ton!

  9. The world is definitely coming back to life. I have dogwood trees right outside my bedroom window in full bloom and they are beautiful. I hope the storms are not too bad up your way today. That is terrific that they repaved your alley and fixed that giant hole. I'm sure you all are very thankful for that, I know I would be too. Your dinners sound delicious. I've got vegetable soup going in the crockpot today. I'll make some cornbread to go with it later. I hope you have a great Lord's Day, Cheryl.

I am so grateful (although I don't use, except to walk), but many others use it and what a difference it is. Glad the city finally heard us!
Thank you. Just eating simple and what I have. Soup sounds good, been thinking about that too. Mmmm cornbread.
Thank you -- you have a blessed week.

  10. That is a respectable week! I have drawn up plans for clotheslines in our yard. The old ones were taken down when our house was re-sided, then we got a naughty puppy. I am so looking forward to drying everything outside. Springtime is probably further along for you -- and I am feeling very impatient just reading what you are doing!!!

    1. Thanks - not bad. A clothesline will be nice. I just love the smell of laundry off the line! It not only smells good, but feels good too. Good luck with that.
It is getting pretty around here - things are coming back to life.
I hope you feel the spring weather soon!
      Have a wonderful week.

  11. I laughed at the thought of you carrying those long 2x6's with the winds! That's a workout, be careful. Hope the platform turned out nice. We've had spring weather in AZ for several weeks already. My grass is already growing like crazy and I've been planting pots of petunias on the patio. This is my favorite time of year! Hope you have a great week! I always enjoy your positive, uplifting posts!

    1. Yeah, it had to look comical. It was a workout and the wind made it worse! It was a very simple platform but will work!
AZ is so far ahead of us. I am glad you are able to plant already. That is neat. It is a lovely time of the year, except for the nasty storms we have.
I appreciate your kind words, and glad to have you here.
      Have a lovely week.

  13. I had a no spend week (out of necessity, lol) Just too stubbirn to break down and go to the store. However, yesterday I had to get gas, hopefully for the month, and then some half & Half for coffee. I had a gift card for (of all places) 7-11, lol. So, I used some of that for the essentials. Not the gas. We have a gas station near my daughter, appropriately names "blessing" that has gas for $279 a gallon, while everyone else is $3.50 a gallon. They run out of gas ALL the time, but they fill up just as quick too. Bet they are making a killing. The place is usually busy, but it doesn't take long to get really. I am more patient in my old age, lol. Tomorrow is a new month! I hope it is a good one Then May is "beach" vacay with my sisters and then the summer I work a little part time job to help pay property taxes. Whew.

    1. Those no spends are nice to have now and then for sure. Heck, free money, might as well use it.
That is a good price on gas. I bet they do a brisk business, so much cheaper than the norm.
Hard to believe April starts tomorrow - it is sure flying by. Yay, on having something fun to look forward to. That sounds fun. Very smart to take care of the taxes that way. Hope it is a pleasurable job!
      Have a super week.

  14. I am very envious of your gas prices. This week Costco is 3.57 a gallon and Fred Meyers is 3.79 before the Kroger discount. We had one kind of a nice day. A nice morning and rainy afternoon. We have been doing a freezer challenge this month. I keep reminding my husband we need to eat the stuff we have. I did u]run across a good sale on a few pantry items I was out of so a bought a couple for the pantry. The backyard chickens started laying again at the end of February so we have not needed to buy any eggs this month. We get 2 eggs pretty much everyday and sometimes 3. We only have 3 chickens. We feed them any food scrapes we have but have to be careful we bury any they don’t eat. Chickens attract rats much the way bird seed does. My husband always has traps set.
Spring can be very wet here and the girls really don’t like the rain. I would like it to warm up a bit so I can open some windows and air things out. Hopefully we will get a couple of warm days in April.
This week is spring break for the grandkids. I am hoping I can hire my granddaughter to do a few jobs for me. She is 14 so I am hoping she wants to earn some money.
We will have a big expense in April as out property taxes are due by the end of April. I just need to be thankful for our house and that we have savings to pay our taxes.

    2. Hi Nancy. Gas prices vary so much here. One week they are great and then they pop up. We had spring break here at the same time as the basketball tourney - so prices went up. They always do when something special is happening, even though we are told that doesn't matter! I am glad I only fill-up once a month, and get to use those points.
Using what we have is just smart. You sure don't want the freezer items to get frost burnt or forgotten. Use it up. Great on the eggs - love that 3 chicks are keeping you supplied. Just shows you don't need a lot.
I hope you get some good work out of your young lady - she can maybe earn some fun cash.
May will be prop. tax here and also car tags for me. It sure is a comfort to know you have the funds.
I hope you get some "window" weather soon. It is such a joy.
      Have a super week.
