Spring Has Sprung (?)

It appears that spring has sprung by the looks of things.  But good golly Miss Molly it's cold outside!!!!  It was in the 40's this morning and the wind is blowing and it is just down right chilly out there.  Good grief.
Friday is supposed to be close to 90 and we have a few 80's coming up as well.  It just doesn't seem like it can make it's mind up this year.
I have seen stories about snow happening this week in the continental U.S.!!!!!!!

I still don't have tomatoes planted.  I did plant a couple pepper plants yesterday, and a couple cucumber plants.  I have a few flowers planted as well.  Today I will give you a little spring time tour of the yard.  These are the things that make me smile these days!

Poppies and peonies - and there will be tons of lilies to bloom later.  Oh how I love the peonies!!!  I have picked several bouquets already.  I just love the aroma - one of my favorites!
See that little birdhouse on the left side of the picture?  It is on the handle of a broken shovel as a yard ornament.  Well, there is a tiny pair of birds that have built a nest in it this year!!!  They are about hummingbird size birds - but not hummies.  The opening is about 1" in size.  The birdhouse is about the size of my hand.

Squirrely and it's buffet!  I have many, many squirrels. They are so sweet to watch.  They run to me every time they see me for handouts of peanuts!

Spiderwort is blooming - this picture doesn't do the color justice.  It is such a pretty purple flower.

Some baskets in the front flower bed.  The green is spiderwort and there is echinacea in there as well.

Pretty geranium.  I just think they are so delicate.

I planted 4 hanging baskets with multi colored begonias.  They will fill in nicely.  This is down the back walk.

Clematis have started blooming.  These used to be light blue.  Last year they were deep purple, now they are reddish purple.  Absolutely covered with buds!

All the climbing roses are absolutely covered in buds this year.  Last year some didn't get but one or 2 flowers.  Amazing.  It should be lovely very soon.

Columbine.  Years ago these were a very light blue - now they are very dark purple - almost a black color in person.

Chives are popping blooms.  Those have been growing in that barrel for years.

Vinca vine has started blooming as well.

So there you have it - a mini tour.  I have so much work to do out there.  I have been pulling weeds like crazy in the flower beds.  They have almost taken over this spring do to all the rains.  I need to get bark mulch to cover some areas that have thinned out over the past couple years.  Maybe I will get the balance of the veggies planted this week (not a lot of plants) and I also need to trim bushes.  There is never an end to the yard work - and this year - more than ever - I AM GLAD.  It is keeping me busy and I need that. Nature is just so awesome!!!!

ENJOY

  1. Lovely and think you for giving me the names of some flowers that spring up in my yard every year. Spiderwort I have always enjoyed and now can address it properly.

    1. I love my flowers - most of the perennials all came from my Mom and Daddies place years ago. I love that I have a piece of them here too.

  6. ❤ Your yard is beautiful and I agree that being busy, especially among God's handiwork, is the best therapy.❤

  7. Cheryl, you're just surrounded in beauty, aren't you? My peonies have taken a beating from the torrential rain we've had and are laying on the ground! I love your geraniums. They're a perennial in Southern California and I had red ones and white ones surrounding my patio. They smelled heavenly.

What kind of peanuts do you feed your squirrel?

    1. It seems every year when the peonies start to bloom the rains come. It is so frustrating. We have now had hard rains for 2 days - I have been picking what I can.

I tend to get peanuts in shell at the feed store. The squirrels run up to my feet or run down the handrail and stand up and beg for their peanuts. Spoiled? Not my squirrels!!!!!

  8. I love peonies too - they are so beautiful. It looks like you have quite a few bushes.
It's so nice that many of your plants came from your parents.
I did a lot of dividing this spring to fill in some empty spots. You mentioned in one of your earlier blog posts about doing that. I enjoy it & don't mind waiting for the little divisions to grow up into big plants.
Last year a friend let me know that their neighbor took out a large bed of flowers and put them on the side of the road.
Of course I went right over there and brought home tons of daffodils, Siberian Iris and Bearded Iris.
They all settled in & came back nicely this year

    1. Oh my how fortunate to be able to get free bulbs! How cool is that? It always amazes me that people will 'throw away' flowers.
Yes, it takes time for some things to 'catch' and bloom - but it is worth it.
Glad you have had so many freebee flowers as well.

Many of the peonies were here when we bought the house almost 34 years ago and they were well established then. Others came from Mom's. It is amazing how long plants last.

  12. I love, love, love your garden. Your garden has been such an inspiration to me. I mentioned it before but we have similar homes from the same time period they were built and similar yards. Reading your blog was such a help for me in my own gardening.

Oh my gosh that squirrel is the cutest ever. I love him. I love squirrels.

We are getting rain, tornadoes and lots of flooding. Did get my tomatoes planted. When DH & I replaced our bed. We took our old one, tore it apart to use the bed springs as trellises. We put the tomatoes on one new "trellis". Oh my gosh it looks so cute. I have some strawberries already blooming. That is if they haven't flooded yet. You ready for this one. I have over 400 roses. I grew it from one little tiny rose bush that I planted six years ago. I propragated it and made that little tiny plant grow into several huge bushes. I do still have a lot of planting to do but have to wait until the rain and flooding stops.

    1. I am so glad you find the blog and my yard as inspiration. That is really a neat feeling.
Oh my goodness, that is a lot of roses! WOW. That will be gorgeous for sure.
Those squirrels make me smile and laugh every day!

No, still raining here! I need to get the tomatoes out in the next couple days in between rains. It is supposed to rain off and on for days. I also need to get the zucchini in. I have 2 bell pepper plants already in and cukes. Oh, green onion starts as well. It will happen - not too worried.

I bet the springs trellis does look cute. Waste not want not!
Hopefully you get a break in the rain!

  13. Everything looks so pretty. With all of the construction going on here, my flower beds look pretty bad. The construction should be done next week and then I will have just shy of a month before YD graduation to get the flower beds pretty.
