Chilly Morning Ramblings

My mornings have been very chilly the past few days.  Sunday gave way to the first measurable snow and WIND!  The outdoor kitties didn't come out of the greenhouse Sunday, except to potty, and then I think they held it in!!!!  Smart kitties - stayed in the warmer spot and out of the weather.
My going out consisted of only feeding them.  It was yuck and it was really nothing considering what is yet to come.
Oh I am a spring, summer and fall person!
View from the porch on Sunday!  It was gone by evening - it rained and warmed a tiny bit.  We only had about 1/2".

Not the best picture (taken through window) of the back this AM.  Leaves, leaves, every where leaves.

I have been pulling together fabric for little girl quilted nap blankies.  I think I have it all laid out - so hopefully I will start sewing this week.  I plan on using an old mattress cover for a filler.  It is in very good shape, I don't use any longer - so I will cut and use to make the quilts a little warmer.  I have 3 to make and then baby doll blankies for 2 of them as well.
I am using fabric & pieces that I have had for years.  There will be no money spent on these at all.  3 special presents - cost ZERO.
I went through my supplies and I have everything for making a blended snack mix for the 3 older nephews.  I will include their favorite brownies (they love my brownies) and maybe some fudge or cookies.  Have everything for soup mixes I will be making for baskets as well.
I do NEED to make my jelly!!!!

I showed you my egg,  ham and cheese biscuits I made last week.  I thought I might show you how I get my egg nice and round.  I use an old wide mouth canning ring!  Yep,  grease it well and drop egg in (I broke yoke with fork) and fry - then flip entire thing and do other side.
Slide a knife around edges and out pops a nice round egg just like restaurants serve.
You could use any item you have that is metal and round and open on both sides.  I like the rings as there are no sharp edges like there might be from using a can.

My biggest decisions each day is what am I going to eat!!!  Such problems - LOL.  That is how slow and laid back my days are.  No schedule to meet, no leaving if I so desire - heck I can eat junk for a meal if I want.  Normally I don't - but I could.  Feeding kitties is my one schedule item.
Yep - life in the slow lane - there is much to be said for it.

We are to get more rain this week and a couple decent days - then back to chilly days.  I will get the leaves all gathered at some point and they will be put on the garden area for the winter.  Heck more leaves will be falling - so no rush.
My house stays pretty neat - I am not a messy person.  Just dust and vacuuming most of the time, and then only when I feel like it!   (not like I have a lot of company).  Dust/fur bunnies seem to move in VERY often!  I continue to slowly declutter.
I will be crafting more in the weeks to come - and a little decorating for the holidays.

Just quiet and slow days around here.  How is it going in your home?  What does your week have in store for you?

TOMORROW - Inexpensive small gifts ideas and simple wrapping - using what you have or spending next to nothing!  Simple ideas for those co-workers and neighbors.

See you tomorrow.  Have a wonderful day!

  1. Deciding what to eat every day is huge here, too. Once I have that in my mind for the day things are easier until you have the curve ball of the chicken that was still frozen at 4 PM. Thank goodness for containers of homemade chili in the freezer for supper last night. Who knew that a chicken split in half down the middle would take as long to thaw as a whole bird! Well now I know!

    1. Those containers of already made food are wonderful. I did chili yesterday as well (from freezer).
Well now you know and can plan accordingly!!
Nice to just be able to go with the flow!

  2. Deciding what to eat is a big part of my day too. Sounds chilly up your way. It’s chilly here too. Although we have not had any snow here. I like the kind where it is gone by noon. Lol

    1. Isn't it something that our big adventure is figuring out meals?? My favorite kind of snow too!

  3. Do post pictures of those quilts when they're done, Cheryl. I still have the quilts a grandmother made for each of our sons when they were babies. They'll get them when they start their own families. What a great idea to use a mattress pad for batting! Love your ideas!

Like the other ladies, I, too, spend time deciding what our meals will be. Often I'll make a big meal and get creative with leftovers for a few days. --Elise

    1. I guess we could surely have worse problems to contend with!! LOL
I will show them - they will be pretty simple - but many of the great greats have a blankie Auntie has made. I am not a quilter at all - but I make a pieced blankie and they have always been a hit.

  4. After last week's big spend on food (which absolutely stuffed the freezer outside and fridge/freezer inside), this girl is staying in! I spent $260 total. We are full up with proteins until at least March except breakfast sausage or some fresh chicken if we just gotta have it.

I am a quilter and love triangles therefore, my online group buddies send me their "waste" (these are cutoffs from sewing corners onto larger squares). Well, I had about 3 gallons of these that have been sitting around in their bags. I set out on Friday to trim them ALL! I finished yesterday late morning. My hands are happy to be done with that job. They will all go into long-term quilt projects that use those sizes.

I'm also doing that walkabout our home with a keen eye on everything. What am I done with? Even though we did a major purge 25years ago, there are still items now and then to go. A few larger decorative snowman items went, 3 baggies of wine corks are going today. My smaller office desk is gone and hoping the side table filing drawer goes today. It was all replaced with a larger desk obtained for a pittance on Facebook Marketplace. It looks "cleaner" and I'm happy with the decision.

With canned cat food hard to get (manufacturers are having trouble getting cans), I now order Kylie's food online for in-store pickup. This was I'm not wasting gas to find the shelf empty. At some point today I will drive the 2.25miles to pick it up ;-)

Yesterday I cleaned the bathroom and dusted. This morning a load of towels is now in the dryer. Sheets are next.

I do love this kind of week sometimes. Relaxing and rewarding, tucked warmly in my home :-) God is good and I am Blessed.

    1. What a job! I wish I was a REAL quilter - I know several - but I am not. I do my best to piece thinks together and I keep it simple.
You have done decluttering. I have seen lovely Christmas wreaths made with wine corks! Look on Pinterest. Maybe a Christmas tree!
Your week sounds like most of my days. It is nice to just have a slow pace.

  5. Meal planning is often difficult here too. I just get tired of making the decision - I asked my son what he wanted for dinner tonight and he just shrugged. I think we'll eat up some leftovers from the fridge. Sometimes I just reach into the freezer and plan my meal around that.

A FB memory popped up today - last year I had my decorations and tree up. Not this year, though I'll probably start bringing some of the tubs up from the basement today while I'm doing laundry. Take something down, bring something up.

    Take care, stay well.

    1. I told my sister the other day someone needs to open a restaurant called "I DON'T CARE". That is the answer so many give! LOL
I may do some little decorating in a week or so. Have fun!
      Take care

    2. Haha! I ask my hudmsband what he wants. He replies I Don't Care. I reply...I don't know how to make that.

  6. I am impressed with your quilting/sewing skills! Yes, please post pictures! The latest sewing I have done is mending. A new apron would be nice tho.

The snow didn't amount to much and we knew it would happen sooner or later. We have had some unusually dark days. Always happy to see the sun.

I used the food saver to package the tough old turkey in small packages so I can make dog food. Chopped it really fine and the dogs pretty much gulp their food down so that's a win-win. Finally got the last of the canned goods dated and in the proper place in the garage. Saw some gaps so those items went on my Meijer list for tomorrow. Made taco mac and cheese yesterday for lunch and it was quite good. Definitely enough left for lunch today after we get back from the dentist for bi-yearly cleanings.

Thursday is a vet appointment for the boys' yearly checkup and then Friday the Urban Farmer has a haircut and beard trim. This is a rare week for us to actually have things on the calendar. I will echo Miss Elle's sentiment: God is good and I am Blessed!

    1. I wish I were a real quilter - not just a sewer. But hey, I give it a go. The ids are little and they will be OK with my adventure. Momma said it sounded like a fantastic idea to her!!!
Taco mac and cheese sounds good. Get those gaps filled, so if need be you can settle in for a long winter's rest!
OH YES - God is good and we are surely blessed

  7. Seems like the cold weather has put you into the spirit of Christmas. Your gifting plans sound great. It's so much more fun to make things than to just fork over cash for a premade gift. Enjoy the season. 22F here this morning but I had a nice pick of broccoli and cabbage. Grouse soup for lunch. Woodstove is keeping us cosy.

    1. I guess maybe that is it. Weather does change my way of thinking. I love homemade stuff - and most of my family does as well.
Never had grouse before. I bet that was good. Brrrr glad it isn't that cold here!

  8. Wish you and I could change places, we are to be around 80F today. I ran to the store to get milk and cheese yesterday, came home in a sweat. I just love the winter, when I was young it was the summer.
I would perfer winter all year.

I have a tough time with eating. Cooking for one is just not fun. I have to force me self or I live on chips, cereal and toast. I have a full pantry and freezer. I did take out chicken breast, half of a NY strip and a minute steak from the freezer last night. Trying to force my self to eat better.

The house is a mess with dust and dog (dust) bunnies everywhere. The kitchen needs a good scrub and I need to clean the oven again (with baking soda and vinegar) like you taught me.

    Have a great week!

    1. I wish we could trade locations as well. I do great with 75-80.
It isn't fun to cook for one - but we must take care of ourselves. Good for you on taking some great sounding meat choices out of the freezer. No sense having it - if you don't eat it!

We all get in a funk now and then. The job I hate doing the most is vacuuming. I have no idea why. It is always so nice when done.
You take care and you better get to eating right!!!!!

  9. I usually work out my menu for the upcoming month. Not that I follow it exactly as things sometimes get moved. This ensures that I use everything up as much as possible.

Cold and windy here today. We are expecting snow later and with the wind any amount is going to cause visibility problems.

    God bless.

    1. I love to hear about people making up menus. I have never been able to get myself to do that. I just go by the seat on my pants!
Today is actually pretty here. Sunny, little breeze and in the 50's. Only lasts another 24 hours or so then changing again.
      Blessings dear.

  10. Enjoyed your slow and cozy post. I most likely will decorate for Christmas on Thanksgiving day...as we will be solo and I'm not even fixing turkey! Not a fan as of the last few years...haven't decided on a menu...but pretty sure hubby will want I DON'T CARE! I laughed out loud at your suggestion for that as a restaurant name!!!

    1. Thanks - some days are just slow and maybe even a little lazy. That is OK. Not sure if I will make a turkey until after Tday. I think I will be going to my nieces that day and maybe I will fix one the week after and have my neighbors over for dinner.

Good name I think!!!! LOL I do believe it would be a hit if for no other reason than to see what they have!

  11. After lots of medical and dental appointments the past few weeks, we are looking forward to staying home for a change. Husband is getting a haircut tomorrow, but then there is nothing on the calendar for the foreseeable future.

I'd love to see pictures of the quilts when they're finished. You ARE a quilter if you are making quilts. The kids will love them all the better because you made them. Food for young men is always appreciated.

Went to the weekly food giveaway today and came home with an abundance of good food: potatoes, peppers, salad mix, cut mango, honeysweet apples (yum!!), small tomatoes, an italian hoagie, a wedge of fancy cheese, fruit punch, cookies, cereal, and bagels. God is very good!!

    1. Glad you are going to get some stay at home time.
I will show pictures when done. I guess I say not a quilter as I don't really do the quilting part of it. I think the kids will like them. And yes, most people like food and young men love sweets!

It sounds like you got some wonderful items. That is fantastic. I am sure some of those things are high ticket items.
      God is very good!

    1. It is really easy to do the eggs - just grease the ring well!
WOW more than you did - amazing. I thought I heard your area or there abouts had a blizzard.
I did some raking today too.

  13. That is a great idea. I often reuse things like that to make quilts. I have torn apart older blankets to use as batting for quilts. Love your squirrel. We have been getting cold mornings here also.

  14. My days center around 'what am i going to eat' too. Sis and I are going to a town about an hour from here that has an Aldi tomorrow to get the turkey day stuff. Hoping to grab some extra canned goods for my pantry. Always a smart idea these days. I did a bit of online Christmas shopping. Nothing to $$$ but did knock out a few gifts. My hands are crippled so my days of crafting/cooking are few and far between. Too much precision. I enjoy Winter and like snow. No use for ice though. I like the snug inside feeling. I put my decorations up the first week of November. Since I'm pretty much home except for doctor appts. I will get to enjoy them for 2 full months. I'm taking out a small lasagna from the freezer for supper. I make garlic bread with whatever is on hand. Tonight it's english muffins. Please post pics of the quilts!

I guess some snow is OK - just not a lot. Ice - I am with you on that. Just so dangerous.
I have fall decor up - I will probably change it out next week. It would be lovely to enjoy your decorations so long.
Lasagna sounds yummy. Have a good day.

  15. It seems like life revolves around food-=making a list, going to shop for it, putting it away, getting it out, thawing, peeling, cooking, and then after eating it, putting away the leftovers.
