The Hills are Alive......

Well, I guess the hills are.  The backyard sure is!  Things are all growing and coming back to life.  The birds are singing and serenading me every time I go outside.  The squirrels are frisky and playing.  The kitties are enjoying being outside and sunning.
WEEDS - oh my, they sure are growing.  It is amazing how quickly un-desirable plants grow.  We need to figure a way to cross them with veggies.  Think of the veggies we could have!!!!!

                                                                Such delicate little flowers
Poppies are budding.  The buds are huge
Vinca vines are blooming - so subtle yet pretty.
The clematis has taken off in the past week or so and even getting buds
Peonies are loaded again with buds.  I can hardly wait - I so LOVE the smell of them
                                                           Roses are starting to bud

Everything is finally popping up and out.  I love the flowers!   They make me happy.
Grass is growing like crazy and requiring much mowing.  I see violets and dandelions everywhere.  There are many ground cover weeds growing as well.  (sigh)
The forsythia are now green and my goodness have they grown.  I am going out shortly to trim them up.

The only part of spring I do not like is the opportunity for so many bad storms.
I guess we have to endure the ugly to get the beauty.  God shows me each day the wonders of His hand.
I just love spring.
Hoping you all have a great Cinco de Mayo!!!!!!

ENJOY all the wonders of the world!

  1. Spring has sprung, the grass is riz...We've had so much snow and rain this spring that I am very far behind in garden planting. Two inches of yet more rain are forecast for tomorrow, too.

In the past two weeks I assembled my new electric chainsaw and cleaned out lots of young trees and poison ivy from the back of the lot. (The arm socks worked great!) Moved turf from under a planned new garden bed to another area that needed it. Built two raised beds (2-1/2 x 6 ft. and 3-1/4 x 10ft.). Bought manure compost and partially filled the new beds with manure, partially composted leaves from last fall and peat moss. Moved the clothesline pole post holder away from the new beds. Planted onion sets on Tuesday (about 6 weeks late). Want to get peas in later today (4 weeks late.) Still haven't even started tomatoes, cukes, and zukes in the house. Should have had that done a month ago. Finally put away the snow shovel and pulled the heat tape plug today. Supposed to be in the mid-80s later next week.

We get very few tornados here for which I am very grateful, as we have no place to go for shelter. The recent tornado in Andover, KS, went about 9 mi. east of my mother's house. I worry about her because she can no longer get down the stairs to her basement.

    1. Look at you go!!! Wow, you have been busy. Glad the socks helped! I haven't planted a thing either. Mowing and trimming is about it.
I did go out and trim bushes and it started raining just as I got done. Much more rain to come. I totally understand your frustration with all the rain - it has been wet! And WINDY!
We get warm next week as well.
That is so scary for your mom. Too close for comfort. The first year I lost my mom - we had a tornado hit just blocks from her house. My first thought was call mom. Then it hit me she was not there. I hope you have great success getting stuff done in the next week or so.

  2. These Spring mornings re motivating! We are up and have the first load going in the canner this morning and will shortly go out to water the veggie pots. Then our new freezer that did come yesterday needs to be measured for storage tubs for organization and the screen porch cleaned so we can eat out there. Much to do before storms move in tomorrow. Praying that all in the path are safe and there are no tornados!

    1. You are a busy gal as well. Fantastic on the freezer.
It is raining here - but storms come in later. Stay safe and I hope you get your 'chores' all done!

  3. The flowers are beautiful! The daffodils are gone now but peonies are budding out along with the roses. I need to spray the roses if we ever have a few dry days. The hostas are all up and are looking great.

Miss Frances, we watched videos of that horrifying tornado to Kansas. So glad it didn't hit your mom's house.

We are off to Rural King to see about adding some chicks to our menagerie. Hope they can sex them as we don't want a rooster.

    1. Yep, the daffies are all gone. It doesn't look to be dry for a few days! Oh how fun on chicks. That is probably pretty smart right now - if feed isn't too expensive. Of course, chickens eat all kinds of scraps too.

  4. Oh all that green is so lovely. We've had some really warm days this week and I notice the trees are starting to bud out. I expect to come home from my trip to lots of green. Enjoy your day!

  5. I wrote about this very thing on my Facebook page today. Our Bradford pears along the boulevard and pond-side are in bloom. The white ibis are back on the water and the robins and redwing blackbirds were singing. I even spotted one of our summer resident sandhills. It's that nature coming alive that has gotten me through all this gloomy and rainy weather. I finally got my deck set up yesterday. My planter boxes are back on the deck rails and will get planted in the next couple of weeks. Temps are still dropping into the 30s at night, so I'm not pushing planting them yet. Dropped some pea seeds into a deck pot. I put in more than last year, in case they don't all sprout. I'm planning on getting some pickle cucumber seeds in another pot later today. Tomatoes and pepper starts will get planted closer to Memorial Day. And, since we're going to get more rain late afternoon and tomorrow, the deck chair cushions will wait to come out until the weekend. Making the best of the space I have and with what nature brings me.

    1. It sounds like you have really made great use of your space. That is so cool. I love seeing and hearing the birds. I saw a huge woodpecker on the back tree the other day That was fun. My daddy always said the ground isn't warm enough until almost Memorial Day any way. He always figured it was a waste of time before that. Trust me, he always had a wonderful garden.

  6. Your garden is beautiful, Cheryl! It reminds me of our spring gardens in Ohio during our years there. I planted many of the same things.

While gardening isn't in the schedule this springtime (for me), I'm happy to share the very GOOD news that it can be again in the future. Saw a highly recommended podiatrist yesterday, just one week after calling for an appointment!!! X-rays were taken of both feet before going into the exam room. Surgery isn't only possible, it will be scheduled once we've moved into our house and settled enough for it to happen! One foot at a time. Outpatient surgery. Recovery time of about 2-1/2 months. So... by next spring I can have plans for roughly 1/4 acre of bare ground. :-D

    1. Oh Elise that is wonderful news. I am so happy for you. You will be acting like a spring chick once you are healed!!! That will be wonderful to have no pain and to be able to walk easily and have no pain. YAY!!!! Moving has proven to be an advantage in more than one way.

We've had so much rain and no breaks to mow. My poor pup can't even squat to do his business without getting poked in his privates! The grass is so long and shaggy, but a glorious GREEN! It's beautiful! My Clematis survived and has covered it's trellis with blooms. Yup, everything is gorgeous. We have a momma mourning dove nesting by the garage door to the yard. We watch each other through the kitchen window. I also have a sweet little house finch that uses my front porch wreath as his stage. He perches on it several times a day and belts out a concerto!! It's so loud that it sounds like he's in the front entrance nook- it's too small to be called a foyer lol. The dog hears him and goes over there. He can't figure out where the bird is. I love animals!!

More rain today. If you see the Kansas clouds moving towards you, know that they're full! We got 3" yesterday and it's raining again today. The sump has been running nonstop for at least 24 hrs. We're in a flood warning.

    Good weekend to you!

    1. What a wonderful description of that sweet little birdie. Green is the word here as well. It sure is amazing what a couple months can do.
Raining here too - bigger rains tonight and tomorrow. I did get out and trim the bushes, and just as I finished here came the rain. I sure hope you don't flood. You can please send that rain in a different direction and I won't mind a bit!
