Weekly Wrap-Up 5/8

Happy Sunday to all.  Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's out there - whether you are a mommy to a two legged or 4 legged baby!!!!  I hope you all enjoy your special day.
I have never understood this day - EVERY DAY should be a special day for moms.  We love them, we have hurt them, we laugh with them, we appreciate them, and many of us MISS them!!!!!!

We have had a range of weather again this week.  Lots of rain, wind, cool and then back to warmer days.  Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day - something which hasn't been seen much lately.  I heard this week that we have had only 9 days rain free since April 1.
This coming week is supposed to be in the 80's each day and dry!!  Straight to summer!

My week:
  • Loads of laundry
  • Made a batch of biscuits
  • Found a box of ice cream treats in the back of freezer - YUM
  • Cut chives and froze
  • Cut and dried mint
  • Got to looking closely at my bank statement - noticed that I got my Fed. tax refund 8 days after filing my taxes!!!!!  Unheard of!
  • Mowed and trimmed the entire yard
  • Trimmed all the bushes
  • I have spent every dry moment trimming, pulling, cutting and weeding everything I could - sure is a lot to do
  • Paid everything I had on hand and mailed a birthday card (from my stock)
  • I got a call one day from a friend that WM family market had a good stock of canned cat food.  I ran down there (5 minutes away) and yes, they did.  Got items I haven't been finding lately
  • No grocery shopping again this week
  • Doing all the normal things we all do
Meals this past week:
Leftovers from visit at sis's house
Cheesy broccoli soup (freezer)
Mixed greens/ham (freezer) and fried potatoes
Dirty rice stovetop quiche (rice from freezer)
Tamales over rice and fresh veggies
Biscuits and gravy
Mashed potatoes and ham sandwich
SNACKS:  fruit, ice cream bars, and Ramen soup (yes I did!)

How was your week?  Are you doing any gardening yet?  I will probably start in a week or so (just waiting to make sure this weather sticks).  Did you get any deals or bargains?
Give us a shout out.  We all kind of live through each other!  Love getting ideas from you all.
It has been great this week to see so many new people posting!!!  WELCOME

Blessings to you all from my humble little home!

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.  And those who know thy name put their trust in thee, for thou, O Lord, hast not forsaken those who seek thee.
Psalms 9:9-10

Lord, in these hard times, we often forget that You are in control, and that we must have complete and total faith in Your will.  We may not understand, but we do know that whether here on earth or in heaven we will be with You.  Thank You for loving us.

  1. I did my May grocery shop this week. All of my garden as well as my patio pots and hanging baskets are in my portable greenhouse on the patio. There is some room but not much. Frost the next 3d and it was only 35 this morning! Sigh......... We have however, had a lovely bunch of rain the last 2 weeks and it is much needed in this drought high desert state!!!!

    Happy Sunday :-)

Glad you have your plants already to go WHEN EVER! I am glad no frost here for a few days. MAYBE we are in the go zone here. Glad you got much needed rain.
      Have a great day!

  2. Had a big car bill but thankfully ready for it.
Got stove wood today at a good price.
Easy meals this week. Lots from freezer.

YAY on stove wood. Got to love those freezer meals!

  3. Happy Mother's Day to you, too, Cheryl! Hope your kitties give you lots of love today.

Our son excelled with cooking this week: beef roast was then stew and (after) a kind of pot pie using stale bread slices. Canned Chop Suey with rice one night provided enough leftovers for delicious Chow Mein using Ramen noodles and eggs the next. He also made a Tater Tot casserole. Proud of my 29 yr. old.

This week brought a LOT of progress on our house and the great news from the podiatrist/orthopedic surgeon. In a few more weeks we should be able to move in, and then I can schedule surgery.

    1. What a wonderful week you have had. It sounds like your son really stepped up with all the great meals this week. I haven't had chopped suey (canned) for years. That sounds good.
YAY on the house - I am happy it is close now. You will be having a wonderful fall and winter this year.
      Have a great day.

  4. I really enjoy reading your blog, Miss Cheryl. My Mom also taught ,e to be frugal, to make do and not waste. I hope you have a great Mother’s Day! I thought about you when I went to Kroger last night because some of the prices are just ridiculous now, but I still got some good deals. I will go to Aldi on the way back from my parents house today and finish my shopping list because their produce is much better in price.

    1. Hello Ga Dawg! Glad to have you here. We love seeing new people post!!! I am enjoying the sun and doing yard work and getting kitty kisses galore!
I need to go this next week to both Kroger and Aldi - and see what I can find. I love Kroger clearance.
Sounds like mom taught you well! Look for those deals first!
      Enjoy your day.

  7. I bought strawberries for 99 cents last week so tomorrow I'll be making about 10 jars of jam. It ends up being about 50-75 cents a jar I think. The cheapest good strawberry jam around here is 2.99 maybe 1.99 on sale.

I need to reorganize my stock up pantry. Adding new purchases mean I need to reorganize every so often.

I don't need to buy any food this coming week but I will be stopping to check for clearance items. Plus I'll spend Monday or Tuesday cooking to stock my fridge for the week. Since I'm running out of freezer space I plan to cook or dehydrate some things from the freezer.

I started more seeds last week. My setup isn't optimal but I have managed to get some things growing. I'm learning.

    1. Not only will your jam be cheaper, but you know exactly what is in it. Homemade is so much more flavorful.
Organize and stock - those seem to be words a lot of people are saying now days! Smart move.
Love that you will cooking for the week or more. Dehydrating really does take so little room.
Good luck with the seeds!!!!!!! Learning is what life is all about!

  8. Happy Mother's Day to everyone! This past week was a difficult one for me, not sure why. Just didn't have a lot of energy or motivation to do much of anything. So, I let my body rest and catch up, for most of the week.

Had breakfast out with my daughter this morning. She is finally on the mend from a bout of Covid (she's 11 days, so past contagion). Her hubs had a side job this morning, so it was just the two of us and we had plenty of time to catch up. Stopped for a few groceries on my way back home -- mostly perishables, as I want to grill veg skewers along with meat during the hot spell that is predicted for this week. I actually finally saw something where the price was almost back to normal -- Land 'o Lakes spread butter (with the red lid, it actually stays spreadable, unlike the whipped round tub), and I grabbed one. It's been either ridiculously high, or out of stock for the most of the last year. So I have hopes that things may start to moderate (wishful thinking, I expect, but hopeful).

I've gotten the deck furniture in place and, since only one parsley plant is showing any signs of life, I'll need to replant all of my herbs, except chives. The one that is coming back has one teeny tiny sprig. At that rate, I'll get one Tbsp. of dried off that plant all summer! Think I'll head to the garden center tomorrow and pick up some starts, along with annuals for the front part of the deck boxes.

I will also need to spend time this week going through medical bills for my broken wrist and checking them against insurance paperwork, so I can get some of that debt off the books. And I also want to get some of the outside windows cleaned during this dry spell. At some point, I'm going to need to go through the garage and set aside items for our marina's annual dock box sale in early June. Now that the boat has sold, there's a lot of stuff that I no longer need. I have no need for a set of shore power cords (our "travel" set) or 2 Danforth anchors and another 2-3 dinghy/jet ski anchors. And then there's all of the excess acrylic dishware and leftover boat cleaning items. May as well make some $$$ while making space in the garage!

    1. Sorry you have felt glum. I think we all have those weeks now and again. Wishing you a better week.
Glad to hear you got the butter you wanted. Hey, we all have to have hope. Things getting better, is a big hope.
I think I lose my thyme every year - but it always comes back with a vengeance - it is in a pot outside.
I forgot you sold your boat - so you may as well make some money on that stuff. Others can use it, and you can get some cash and extra space.
Hope you feel better this week!

  9. What a productive week you have had. We have been very rainy here in the Pacific Northwest. We even got a lot of spring snow so the snow pack is above average. Since last summer was a drought that is kind of exciting.
We found a couple of good buys this week at an outlet store. The grocery store didn’t have any salads in stock this week or broccoli florets.
My husband is trying to prepare the ground for planting but it is still to wet. He had started seeds in egg cartons. His first plants broke ground this week.

    1. Glad you are finally getting rain and snow - hopefully no fires this year. It seems hard to find good deals - but if we look hard - they can be found!!
I may get garden plowed this week. Hoping you get to prepare your ground soon.

  10. Ran a bunch of errands and shopped Aldi last Thursday. The prices and (lack of) quality produce at Aldi made me go to Agway and get 10 more bags of manure compost and another bale of peat moss for the garden beds. I got it put in Thursday afternoon before the rain, so the beds are ready to plant. Also sowed seeds in pots for germination indoors. Have zinnias and marigolds up already under the grow light. Planted peas outside. With warm, sunny weather forecast for this week, I plan to direct sow the carrots, spinach and beets.

We have dental appts for cleanings and exams Monday. Tuesday will be laundry in the a.m. and mowing in the p.m. More garden work on Wed.

I finished reading "The Old Curiosity Shop" by Dickens and didn't like it. Read Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and didn't like it, either. Have started "War and Peace", but am finding it a little boring 100 pgs in. Hope it gets better. To my non-English-major eye, certain classics are highly overrated.

Dinner today was crockpot Hamburger Stroganoff with no-bake cheesecake with strawberries for dessert.

No bargains last week. Made 50 cents returning Aldi grocery carts people had left in the parking lot. No shopping planned for this week.

We've been enjoying watching the Baltimore Orioles eating grape jelly at the feeding station. They're so colorful! I had to quit feeding sunflower seed chips (which the goldfinches love) because the price at WM went from $6.29/5lb bag to 12.97. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

    1. Sounds like you are ready to garden. Sounds like a nice one as well. Good for you.
LOL - I have to laugh. I have War and Peace on the shelf and have stated it a hundred times. Just can't do it. I have a bunch of old classics I purchased over the years - need to read them all.
I have never seen an Oriole in my yard. I would love that. I understand prices are going up, yet I think much of that is greed on the stores. No way would be in short supply yet, from the problems over seas. It really angers me that stores jump on fear and get all greedy. A few weeks ago at the feed store I noticed things were still the same price here - who knows next time. Sounds like a busy week!

  11. Happy Mothers' Day! I was on the run this week with appointments in town 3 of 4 days - dTap booster, hair cut, massage, visit mom. I did purchase 2 new half-barrels to replace the rotten ones. I did manage to get the old ones emptied and the new ones filled. I also made a batch of antipasto to have on hand this summer for snacks. Just had some on crackers with a bowl of soup for supper. All the recycle has been taken to respective depots and there are 2 boxes of castoffs to be donated to an upcoming garage sale. It always feels so good to have that stuff out of the house. And best of all, I got to visit my son and his family who live 3.5 hrs away. I came home to a full rain barrel and 7C. It was a good weekend.

    1. Sounds like a really good week for you! Lots of visiting! Good for you. I have a couple barrels and one is really in need of being gone! It is big and heavy - so nit sure about replacing.
Yay on the full rain barrel - God's water is the best.

Mother's Day greetings to all! My sweet doggy gifted me a lovely summer nightgown!

I'm still on the lookout for sale strawberries but am seeing the lowest at $1.99 lb. I think I should go on a diet! Between the prices and the size of my derriere, the world seems to be sending me a powerful message!!!

Frances made me giggle with her book reviews! Frances, I had such similar reactions to reading some of the classics. I can't help but wonder how bad the other books were! They just couldn't hold my attention. I'm planning to read a Jane Austen this summer and I'm curious if I'll be bored or entertained.

I had a similar week to Lori K's. Difficult. I couldn't seem to motivate myself into action. I think a week of watching tornado damage might have been more draining than I thought. I wanted to sleep more. I had a lovely weekend so I'm hoping it will boost me to start a good and productive week. Hibernation season is over and it's time to put on my work cape!

    Reading this week:
On my nightstand - I finished Even Money by Dick Francis and I haven't pulled out the next book. It'll be another by him.
In my craft room CD - Stephanie Plum # 28 by Janet Evanovich
With my Bible study- Created to be his Help Meet by Debi Pearl
By my reading chair- When the Heart Cries by Cindy Woodsmall

    See ya Tuesday!

    1. I haven't seen good prices on strawberries yet either - usually end of May here.
I understand Frances. I have tried reading some older books and have figured out why I didn't like them in high school when it was a mandatory reading. Thank goodness for those Cliff notes. I would read first, middle and last chapters!!!
I can only read one book at a time, and it amazes me how many you have going. I would be all mixed up.

I think that is why I have to turn the news off - it gets to you and you don't even realize it. I hope this week is better.

Cheryl, I've always been that weirdo that could read multiple books at once. They're usually pretty different so easy to not mix them up. In the stack I mentioned, there's a horseracing mystery set in London, a completely inane mystery set in the Jersey burbs with a bail enforcement officer, a study on biblical womanhood, and an Amish tale.
I used to be the kid that would read while walking home from school or staying up late with a flashlight under the covers!! It's funny. I don't recall anyone ever reading to me. But I do remember having a phonic lesson thing with records and a book to follow along. I know I was younger than 7. So silly but I remember the voice on the record saying "ÀE, IOU some sugar" to remember vowels! My grandpa only had an 8th grade education in Spanish and taught himself English reading old mystery magazines. When I was older he read Ellery Queen and Agatha Christie.
He always gave dictionaries as gifts because he said reading was one of the best things in the world. I
When we would go visit relatives without kids, I'd always ask if they had encyclopedias. I'd read them for hours!

I was right about my good weekend perking me up. I'm moving right along today. 😄

    3. I love to read now - but I sure didn't like it as a high schooler. Now in grade school we always had contests for number of books read. We had to read them out loud to our parents!!! Poor mom. I won those things. I was a gal that went to a different drummer in high school - so maybe that was my rebellion!
      Glad you are feeling better.

  13. Hi Cheryl. It's been an odd week here. Tuesday one granddaughter woke me with the news her friend could not go on the three night cruise she had booked, would I like to go, less than 24 hours notice, fortunately she works for a travel firm and was able to change everything over. Trying to find summer clothes and pack, the phone rang, her sister was hysterical, she has slipped in the kitchen at home, tipped boiling water over one hand and after an x ray, had fractured her other arm. Bless her, the next door neighbour had run round as she had heard screaming. I picked Poppy up and met my daughter half way to the hospital.
Glad you had lots of kitty kisses on Sunday. Eldest grandaughter's little dog was so pleased to see us both back but he is banned from my room as I brought back Covid!! Still we had a great three days. My granddaughter knew three people from work who were also on the cruise, so after dinner and a show was able to party with people her own age.
I grow chives in the garden but have never thought of freezing them. Hope you have a good week. We had rain in the UK before I left so everything outside is now growing at a pace.

I always chop and freeze the chives - they are so easy to use that way.
Glad the world is coming to life in your area.

  16. So many folks rely on themselves and the talking heads to tell them what to do. There is a YouTuber that the Urban Farmer likes to watch but the man does not mention our Creator at all. I'm a little surprised that the Farmer follows him but the man does have news about what is going on in Europe. One of his commenters said that "he didn't want any religious answer". In this day and age, we need to keep close to God and allow him to lead us.

You have been super busy outside! Always so much to do. Got the raised beds filled and I planted green beans in one. Will wait a couple weeks before planting the other. Have plenty of jars and should have enough beans to fill them. Eggplants look good and need to fill in with a few pepper plants. Have little green strawberries.

The eight little Rhode Island Red chicks are doing well. They were a week old last Friday. You can just about see them grow everyday.
