Weekly Wrap Up 9/11

Happy Sunday to all.  I hope this finds you safe and healthy.

Today is the 21st anniversary of the event that changed the entire world.  People may not realize it - here and abroad - but every life WAS changed after that day.  So much changed, and so many lost.  I will never forget that day and many days following.  I live in the flight zone of the airport - and I remember that immediately (and for many days) the skies were silent.  I remember crying and not believing that this could happen.  I remember my momma (who was so sick) not understanding - and crying, saying "what is happening in this world".  I remember it all - I WILL NEVER FORGET!

This week the weather has been decent - not too hot.  We are having rain today.
The birds have been enjoying themselves.  I keep seeing the hummingbirds, and the finches are sure loving my echinacea flowers.  There were 3 bright yellow finches out there the other day - all enjoying a fresh lunch!  The cardinals greet me every morning before sunrise.  They are the first to show up each morning and give me a lovely serenade as I feed the cats.
We have a couple cooler days coming up (70's) this week, then back to the 80's.

My week:  (quiet)
  • Using what I have and using all leftovers in some way
  • Renewed library books online
  • Mowed and trimmed everything
  • Harvesting each day and freezing lots of goodies until I get myself in a mood to can!!!
  • Cut my hair and did a touch up of color
  • Paid everything I had on hand
  • Got to air the house many mornings and had the window open late each night
  • Sorting and organizing a lot more in the deep pantry
  • Received an unexpected check.  Will probably use it for gift cards and basket goodies for holiday gifts
  • Used the rain barrels this week for watering
  • My shutters have been painted!!!  My neighbor came and took them down and took them home and cleaned and air painted them.  Oh my goodness, they are lovely - they look brand new!  Hopefully this week the doors will be done.
  • I did run up to the Christian thrift store up the road (needed to get out a while).  I bought myself 2 long sleeve heavy t-shirt material tops.  They are really pretty and will be great alone or under a sweatshirt.
Click on pic to enlarge.  Hard to see in this one.  I love them and they only cost $1 each!

Meals this past week:
Baked potato with chili sauce and cheese
2 slices pizza (from freezer)
Cauliflower steak, corn on cob, sliced tomatoes (meatless day)
Ground beef/peppers/mushrooms sauteed over rice
Fried chicken and salad
Egg roll bowl
Leftover cabbage/sausage and mashed potatoes

I have been in a mood lately - just can't shake it.  I need to boost myself up and get myself busy.  So much to do.  I think I need some fun in my life!  LOL.  I guess we all have these down times.

How was your week?  Did you get any great deals?  Are the gardens still going?  Mine is winding down a little - but still hanging in there.  Okra is really taking off!
I wish you all a blessed week.  Please stay safe and healthy.

Blessings from my humble little home to you and yours.

Dear Lord, I pray that You will help us each to choose hope over despair, that You will help us expand compassion to others.  I pray for peace for everyone and all lands. Let us all practice love for others.  Please bless us as we go into this new week.  AMEN

  1. I remember 9-11 as well, and where I was and what I was doing. It certainly did change the world. Sounds like you had a good week and with. Ice weather to boot. I’m loving this nicer weather here too.

    1. Howdy - was wondering how you were. Good to see you post.
This nicer weather is almost perfect in my book. I love upper 70's/low 80's and a bit of a breeze.

  2. Good Sunday morning, Cheryl. Yes, I was as glued to the television as most in America. A friend in NYC had called right after the 1st plane hit. When the 2nd hit (while we were on the phone) it was clear it wasn't a tragic accident and everything had changed.

This was a scorching hot week for us, so it was a blessing when rain returned yesterday. The sky cleared enough to see the harvest moon last night. We'll have rain off and on for the next week.

I've been super tired lately, but managed to throw together some easy dinners of salads (several nights), tuna sandwiches one night, homemade chili another, then chicken and dumplings yesterday. The only grocery bargains this week were on Friday only, 2/$5 bacon or breakfast sausage rolls, limit of 2, and 5 lb. bags of potatoes at 2/$5 (also limit of 2, but I just got 1).

Thank you for the reasons to trust God and your prayer today. Amen. --Elise

    1. I do believe each and every one remembers where they were and what they were doing that day.
Glad you got some rain for relief. Hopefully it will help out this week as well. Rain today and tomorrow is cooling us for a couple days.
Dinners all sound tasty to me! Hope you feel better this week.
I didn't do grocery shopping this week. You did good.

  3. I had just brought my preemie baby home a few days before 9/11 so I was already feeling vulnerable and anxious (about caring for her and her medical needs). The events of 9/11 made those feelings worse.

I did a little grocery shopping this week. I found chicken breast that usually sells for around $6 a pound for $1.19 pound.I bought 2 packages for me and 2 for my daughter. I also picked up some clearance produce. But sadly they have doubled and tripled the clearance prices on their produce. Still a savings if it's something I already needed but makes stocking up a little more expensive. I keep telling myself to get used to it. Everything is going up. A box of crackers I buy at Aldi's went up 43 cents since I last bought them about 2- 3 weeks ago. They are still cheaper than the brand name crackers sold across the street at the bigger grocery store (cheaper by about $3! I don't know how folks can afford to shop at that other store!)

I also picked up some discounted sweets & candy from July 4th (75% off!) at that store across the street (I go there to look for clearance items). The sell by day is still weeks away. Into the freezer they go. No one here will care if they have red, white and blue sprinkles! Funny now they have the exact same items for sale at full price only decorated for fall & Halloween!

    1. What a deal on chicken breast. I agree, prices keep inching up - so we either get used to it or do without. Most things (I believe) will go back down eventually, but until then, we just have to make do the best we can.
I love Aldi crackers - those are the ones I buy.
I do that with candy too - who cares what the package looks like. I use it for baking or for the candy dish. People who visit don't care about the package!! LOL
      Get it while you can!

  4. Those who lost their lives on that terrible day will never be forgotten. It did change much of the world and continues to affect the lives of those who survived in so many ways.
Hope your mood improves - perhaps we have times of feeling low, to remind us how good things are when we come out of it.

    1. Yes, some things changed forever. For sure, the day the world changed.
I like that - I think we all need a reminder now and then - maybe that is exactly what it is. Thanks.

  5. Good Sunday morning to all!
Cheryl, nice find on the shirts! I especially like the teal one. It reminds me of peacock feathers! Those will be great for fall.
What color are your shutters? Isn't it amazing how a little paint can make such a change?

Are your other kitties Mom's babies? How are they adjusting? Have you noticed any changes in them? My best friend has several cats and she says it's always a surprise as to how the new Alpha appears when one passes on. She said they're like a little platoon!

In contrast to last Sunday (and your very productive week!), my week was slow going. The doctor gave me a steroid for my breathing/coughing and I was wide awake every night at 2-3am until morning!! So naturally I was bone tired during the days. I managed to get my chores done, but little else. Add the awful allergies and the heat and I was a blob! Weve had a gloriously cool weekend so that was a nice change. Unfortunately, we'll be back to the heat by Tuesday. We got just a spitting of rain. So disappointed. In addition to everything desperately needing it, our water bills have been high. And that's just to keep the lawn barely alive.

We put our flag out first thing this morning. It's so odd that I really *missed* the initial shock of 9/11. I never turned on the TV in the morning and I was busy cleaning and getting ready for my Bible study. I was just getting ready to leave and my phone rang. It was my mom so I picked up. It was about 9:40am Pacific time. She said, "Càn you believe this is happening?". I had no idea what she was talking about! What was that? Almost 5 hrs. since it started? My husband walked in right then because his job in L.A sent everyone home. It took him hours because people were panicked that L.A was next and the traffic was horrible. Ignorance was certainly bliss for me that morning.
Instead of the minute by minute horror that everyone suffered, especially wondering what was next, I was really spared from all of that part. My mom was completely freaked out so I was able to calm her down.

    On to the norm...
Meals were Chicken thighs and pasta salad, Rice and bean burritos, hot chicken ciabatta sandwiches, Tuna Sandwiches and Ramen cabbage salad, and a night we did orts and ends! But last night, we had a feast!!! In cleaning out the freezer last week, I found a flat iron steak buried in back. It wasn't cheap, but it was almost 2 lbs. for $10. I found a great sale last summer and got 3 of them to grill. We did the other two for birthday meals and I forgot about the other one. So we had those, baked potatoes, and steamed broccoli. So delicious and still less than fast food. Plus, we have enough for lunch today. What a treat that was!!!! My friend told me they're now $14.99 per lb!!!
    Gadzooks!!

My books are the same from last week but I'm finishing them up so I'll have nearly all new ones next week. We're watching Season 5 of Father Brown. I love the library!!

    1. I sure hope you have a better week and get some sleep and additional rest and re-coop.
I remember that day - everyone at work was freaking - so I came home and got a portable TV and took it in. (I worked 2 blocks from home). We actually watched the towers fall. Such horror.
That was a great price on flat iron steaks - indeed they are quite pricey now. Sounds like a wonderful meal. All your meals sound good. Feel better!

    2. I didn't mean to avoid a couple questions you asked.
The shutters are back to a lovely hunter green instead of pale bleached out blah! The security doors will be repainted back the same - black. I have paint to do the inside doors (both) in a contrasting color - I will be doing that.

With the cats - Fluff is mommas and so is my inside Coogy. Black came later - but he really respected momma. Fluffy and momma were always together.
Fluff is now a major chatter box every morning, as if she is telling me about her night or saying good morning - it is adorable. Blackie has tried being 'boss' and getting in her face - and she isn't having it. She is such a dainty thing - it is neat to see her stand up for herself.
Coogy, although inside, always saw momma through the door. He checked on her the night I had her in here all night as well. He started getting sick and not eating much right after. We are working through that - and he is doing much better with lots of love and chicken breast!!!! Yep, I started giving him some every day and his belly calmed down and he is not getting sick. Getting back to normal. He can have chicken every day if it helps!
So they have all experienced some change in behavior. To be expected I guess.
      Thanks for asking.

  6. We had the same airport quiet. We have a friend of about six years who was in the area hit in the Pentagon that day. He is a true hero who did not consider his own safety but made sure a handicapped coworker got out safely. It is an honor to call him our friend.

  7. On Sept 11, my nephew was in the Pentagon but by the grace of God, was unharmed. I think he still has nightmares though. My grandson was one week old and I sure wondered what kind of world he would be growing up in. Let us never forget!
Your new shirts are gorgeous. Your week sounds productive to me. We are still eating lots from the garden, but like you, some things are done. Not long until time for pumpkins and sweet potatoes.
Cheryl, be kind to yourself. Do what you need to to get back grooving. Reach out to others and go out and have some fun. Feed your Happy!

Thanks - I thought they were pretty. I washed them this AM with my laundry - getting them ready for wearing!
"Feed your happy" - I like that. I just have no idea what that is!!! I will figure it out.

  10. As usual, excellent Scripture and prayer!

Both tops are really cute! You'll get lots of wear out of them. I'm debating about putting away the summer things. Maybe wait another week.

9/11 was a horrifying day. Most folks remember where they were when the news came on.

Going to can diced tomatoes tomorrow. Too many to eat and hate to throw them out. That would be a big waste.

I need to make salsa this week. Those tomatoes will be wonderful in things this winter.

  11. Cheryl, until you mentioned it, I'd not given any thought to this day being 9/11 and the day we North Americans were reminded that we would not be spared from the vagaries of humanity. And life goes on. There was 13mm (1/2 in) of rain here this week, the first moisture in 3 wks. And the first frost has occurred, albeit a light one. The only thing left in the garden is carrots. The 24 tomatoes were picked from the 12 plants; the worst crop in 40+ yrs. I bought 50 lbs of tomatoes from the Hutterite colony at $1/lb, best deal ever and have processed 12 qts already. I make a toffee tart using toffee bars & cream in small tart shells. Toffee bars can't be found these days so I substituted Werther's candies and they worked like a charm although they took forever to melt down. This was a week for visiting - visited with 2 cousins & just came home from a visit with a friend. We get together 3-4 times a yr and pick up right where we left off. Meals this week - corn chowder, pasta salad, wiener roast, fried green tomatoes.

    1. Yes, we sure got a wakeup call that day. We are not exempt.
Oh gosh, frost already. It will still be a while here before that happens. It is cool today, but back up close to 90* by the weekend. We are to get rain today, then that is it for the week.
Mmm your meals sound good. I need to make fried green tomatoes again - I love them.
Glad you are getting to visit with your special people!

  12. On 9/11 I was working at a local bank, the first plane hit the Twin Towers just after lunch break (UK time). It was hard to take in what customers were telling us. Tragically an ex collegue's 26 year old niece Karlie Rogers was killed in one of the towers so it brought the tragedy even closer to home. Not something we are likely to forget.
Your new t-shirts are a great bargain. Our daughter loves charity shops and brought me 2 tunics and a jumper last week, which I was happy to give her the money for.
We had some much needed rain last week, great for the gardens and luckily after the children had returned to school.
Hope you have a good week.

I love the charity shops too - don't go hardly ever, but they are fun. How nice on your clothes!
Glad you got some rain - I have been hearing about how very dry certain regions are overseas. Have a lovely week.

  13. Hiya Cheryl, I am in Spain for 10days. It’s so warm. I’m not used to these temps. I have booked a 3week course on family tree history. It’s in October. So that will easy me into winter.
    Love your blog.

  14. Oh, how I remember that day...We were in Branson Missourri for our little family vacation and I entered the hotel breakfast area with our little girls, all four of them. I looked up at the television they had as I was holding my tray in line glancing at the donuts...Just in time to see the planes striking. We went to the table amidst many old vets and I hung my head in prayer and we went upstairs to tell hubs...As we left the breakroom I looked up to see another plane crashing again...That day we didn't know if we were going to be able to get home or what with the gas lines and when we went to the Laura Ingalls Wilder home one of the ladies working there was concerned, she hadn't heard from her son at the Pentagon. Still gives me shivers and I wonder what happened. At Silver Dollar City that day also I remember being led in prayer as one of the famous comedians stood as we gathered round.

I hope you are doing well, I know how those turny twisty days can be. I love your tops! Refreshing colors! Great deal gal! Woo hoo!

Your menus sound wonderful, Cauliflower steaks are soooo good! Last night I pulled a bag of frozen soup out of the freezer, I make split pea but add a little pasta gravy in it to Italian it up a bit and it makes a wonderful roux type soup as the peas disentegrate. I serve it over brown buttered rice. I made a little pan of yellow potatoes baked with tomatoes and seasonings to round it out and fill our tummies a bit. : )

Blessings to you, may we lift our country up in prayer. Amen to your prayer too. <3

  16. I lived a mile from the Trade Center on 9/11. And after that surreal day, after the crying people and the ash and the shock and numbness wore off - came so much love and unity and understanding. The fire station on my block lost 7 firefighters, and people came together instantly, mourning, helping, praying. That spirit saved NYC, maybe the whole country. I am so sad that seems to be lost these days. Never forget.
