Frugal Happenings 4/1

HAPPY EASTER to all my friends every where!  May you have a glorious day and remember what the day is truly about.

Oh my, here we are in April.  Time is just flying by and we are still having nasty old winter weather.  I am so ready for Spring.  Our 10" of snow from last weekend melted quickly, then we had rain all but one day.  The lake was huge in the backyards again and the mud has been yucky!
I told G the other day I wondered why geese or ducks never stopped in at our rainy days lake.  Two hours later I looked out the kitchen window, and saw 2 Mallards swimming  in the backyard 2 doors down!!!!  That was too funny.

We had Rocky raccoon come by and visit a couple afternoons and evenings.  He was a smaller coon and my goodness that face!  He wasn't the least bit afraid of me - he walked right by me to go get a drink and wash his 'hands'.  However he was intimidated by the kitties, and got away from them quickly.  He is cute - but I just hope he doesn't become a regular visitor.

So many birds are showing back up at the feeders that disappeared over the winter.  Of course the Robins are back, and now see the bright gold finches, cow birds, red-winged black birds, and all the variety of woodpeckers.  So neat.  It won't be long (one of these days in the future) when the hummingbirds come back.

I managed to snap a picture of my squirrel baby coming to get a nut from his 'Momma'!!!!!!  They come running when they see me!

The daffies are starting to flower despite the weather.
It's been another quiet week.
My frugal week:
  • Printed the taxes
  • Got a 14 lb. Honeysuckle turkey out of the freezer to thaw for Easter dinner. (It's 2 years old)
  • Did more spring cleaning - cleaning never ends
  • Went out and did some much needed banking, that I have put off for 2 months!  I was quickly reminded why I put it off.  I hate dealing with anything at the banks - especially things that requires them the opportunity to try and 'sell' you something!
  • While out I stopped at a different Kroger.  I got a .99 bag of brussel sprouts, some lettuce and grape tomatoes and an .88 HUGE fresh pineapple.
  • Filled the gas tank while out - I still had over a half of tank - but topped it off.  Got a .20/gallon discount
  • Changed out my watch battery with one I had on hand.  I got 2 packs of watch batteries last year at Dollar Tree - 4 batteries/$1.  They last over 6 months each - not bad.
  • Got to watching You Tube and got strayed off path!  You ever have that happen?  I started watching one thing and then got off subject and starting watching videos of abandoned homes!  Interesting.
  • G has been working on cleaning out older paperwork again - boy does that stuff add up fast
  • Doing all the regular stuff every day

Meals this past week:
Beef and dirty rice and salad
Tuna patties, asparagus and salad
BBQ chops (in crockpot) and mac n cheese
Chicken breast and jalapeno poppers (from freezer) and side salad
Beef hotdogs, leftover mac n cheese & salad
Pasta/crab/veggie salad (all in one meal)
Smoked jalapeno sausage and leftover pasta salad

I currently have my turkey bird in the oven.  We are keeping our meal simple today.  It's just us and we are really trying to eat healthier.  Turkey, roasted brussel sprouts and fresh pineapple for dessert.  That is it!  Lots of turkey will be left for various uses this week!

Mother nature is doing an April Fool for us this week.  Supposed to start snowing tonight with maybe 3" by morning!!!  It will melt quickly - but really!!!!!!!!!!!!  Supposed to stay in the 40's this week.  UGH!
My front grass needs mowed terribly - but it is way too wet and muddy.

I hope you all have a blessed week and I pray you all have great health and happiness in your life.
Blessings from our humble little home to yours!

HAPPY EASTER TO ONE AND ALL

  1. Happy Easter to you too, Cheryl. I get so tired of all the mud from snow and rain. You need some sunshine to come and dry it all up. I love our birdfeeders. We've had a lot of birds come back in the last few weeks as well. Yes, the cleaning never ends. I've been scrubbing all week since I was on Spring Break. Great prices on the pineapple and brussel sprouts. Yum on both of them. I did not know that Dollar Tree sold watch batteries, that's great. I need one right now. I hope you have a great week, so sorry you maybe getting snow again.

    1. You are correct - dust continues to accumulate - that is my biggest problem. Never ending. HUGE dust bunnies!!!!

Check Dol. Tree next time you are there. I think the brand is Sunbeam on the watch batteries and they are 4 to a package. Just look where the bulk of the batteries are.

The sprouts (I made 1/2 today) were so good. The pineapple sure is juicy - we will eat on that for a couple days!

I'll survive! Spring has to come sometime.

  2. Happy Easter! Hope you had a blessed day!
Good to know that 2 year old turkeys are still good. I have a couple that I really need to roast.
Ugh on the snow. We had about a foot of heavy snow last weekend that did so much damage. We were without power for 3 days, and we spend yesterday taking down broken branches and trees before they fell down on us.
Hope you have a good week.

    1. Kathy so sorry to hear you got damage from snow. No power for 3 days? WOW! Hope you didn't lose anything in your freezers. We didn't get any damage, just mud.

The turkey is yummy! I cooked it in cooking bag, it is very moist. They really last well in the freezer.
      Have a great one.

  3. Happy Easter! That baby squirrel is so cute. It sounds like you had a good week. I understand what you mean about YouTube. I get started and next thing I know I have been on it for 2 hours. At least it is free. We are supposed to get some snow tonight too. Mother nature is having lots of fun with us this year. My week is up at https://mcoia.blogspot.com/2018/04/my-frugal-list-week-of-march-25-2018.html

    1. I am glad someone else does that with You Tube. It is so easy to get side tracked!
I guess we set all kinds of records with the snow. It wasn't a lot, but enough to break a few records!
      Stay safe.

  4. Hi Cheryl, I’m guessing all your wildlife is happy the menace dogs have been removed.
We use a local credit union that is quite easy to deal with as well as USAA online as my husband is a veteran.
It’s cold here, cold enough my grands had an indoor egg hunt here yesterday, I hope you are done with snow for this season.

    1. I think a lot of kids had indoor egg hunts this year. We had rain Saturday, so a lot of the public hunts had to be inside.

Yes, all the animals seem to be getting back to normal.
      Stay warm.

  6. I hope you had a wonderful day. Ours was quiet too.
I cooked a spiral ham, we also had cheesy potatoes, salad and deviled eggs and I made 7 layer bars for dessert. If there is anything left by Wed. it will go with DH when he goes to visit his sister.
Saturday was decent here and most of yesterday then it poured at about 4 and from then on. It's 38 here right now. We are having cooler and wet weather this week. We got more snow up on Mt Hood overnight, that's a good thing for our water reservoir.

  8. Happy belated Easter Cheryl. Whilst you still have the cold we still have the heat. The nights are cooling down but the ceiling fans are still on in the bedroom all night.
We had a cyclone reform off the coast and is starting to move towards our tropical north. It is bringing heavy rain aand stong winds in coastal areas. We have had so much windy weather lately. The rain means everything is so green and my garden is booming. However further north, they had major flooding a few weeks ago and look like the same is going to happen again.
Hope you finally get that warmer weather.

    1. It is amazing that we are all having our share of bad weather - hot or cold. Please stay safe.

I can't wait to see green garden again!
We are having thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow, getting very warm and windy, then snow in forecast for Wednesday. Crazy.
      It will get warm someday!
      Have a good one

  9. I'm sorry you are going to get hit with more bad weather. I just say the news this morning about how bad it might get for my friends and family. I'm glad our Josh and Lauren are safely in Las Vegas now because all the areas that they traveled through are supposed to be hit hard.

That squirrel baby is darling! I just want to pick it up and cuddle it. :) Great deal on the pineapple too. I thought I was doing good getting one at $1.99. That reminds me, I need to get mine cut up too. ;) Be blessed my friend!

    1. Oh this is Spring in Indiana - it is always unpredictable on weather. I love the rebirth of spring - but the extreme weather sucks.

Glad you family is safe. I hope everyone you know stays safe.
Squirrelly is a cutie isn't he?

      Have a good one.
