Weekly Wrap Up 1/17

Happy Sunday to all.  My goodness we are over half way through this month already.  Crazy!
Hope you all had a good week.
I actually got to experience sunshine for a few days this week!!!!  It was wonderful, yet somewhat odd.  It has just been so cloudy for so long.  We had a few really nice days in the 40's along with the sun.  Woke to a covering of snow on Saturday, but most was gone at the end of the day.  It is flurrying again this morning.  Looks like it will be pretty normal and in the 30's all week.

My neighbor has a light on the alley side of his garage - and every morning when I go out to feed the cats, I see a big old rabbit out by his gate.  It sure appears to be big!  I love that there is so much nature here in the burbs.
The  birds and the squirrels have sure been hungry!
Thursday morning I saw something that had me a bit unnerved. I live in the flight path of the airport and I am very used to the sights and sounds.  That morning in the dark of morn - I walked out and saw military jets flying in an unusual flight pattern out of city and at a super high rates of speed!  That was weird for sure - I just felt I wasn't supposed to see that.  Things that make you say "hmmmmm".

My week:

  • Caught up laundry for first time this year - LOL!  Hung most of it in the basement for extra humidity.  Did dry heavier items.  Have it vented (covered to catch lint/dust) into the basement for extra heat.  There are no heat vents down there
  • I did feel the call to stock a bit.  I stocked up on pet products and OTC drugs/vitamins.  I got myself milk and a huge bag of oranges.  Oh, I got myself a new hand mixer!!!!  Mine finally gave it up over the holidays after 33 years of use!
My new mixer.  $14.99 at Kroger.  It will do me just fine for a long while
  • Went outside on one of the nice days a picked up a gazillion sticks that had fallen, as well as odd pieces of blowing debris
  • Cleaned out the watering holes and bird bath while it was nice
  • Made a pot of potato soup and froze 2 containers for future meals
  • Made a batch of 'special' cookies for my brother and sister - we finally get to have our "Christmas" today!!!!!
  • Paid all bills for the rest of the month and ran up to PO to drop off, since mail delivery will be short a day this week
  • Started a 'tax folder' as info is starting to come in
  • Did a root touch-up on my hair
  • I actually ordered myself a magazine subscription!  Haven't ordered magazines in ages.  Ordered Country Woman for 2 years for a grand total of $15!!!!
  • Using what I have, meals at home, just doing all the normal everyday stuff
Meals this past week:
Big juicy loaded burger and a side salad
Loaded Potato soup - 2X
Goulash
Club sandwich and chips
Ham/rice/asparagus topped with cheese
Smoked sausage sandwiches (used slider buns from frig) topped with lettuce and sliced radish

How was your week?  Are you stocking?  Are you doing a no spend month?  Crafting?  Look forward to hearing from you.

I hope you are all well and safe and stay that way during this coming week.  Prayers for peace and comfort for all.  Blessings from my humble little home to yours.

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear or be in dread of them: for it is the Lord your God who goes with you; He will not fail you or forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6

I know I used this last week as well - it is in my heart.
Good words for our current times

  1. My Betty Crocker hand mixer also gave up this past thanksgiving and my first thought was “they just don’t make them like they use to”. I then did the math and realized it was about 25 years old! I got a new hand mixer as a Christmas present for myself and spent about $20 and expect it will last about as long.

    1. That's funny - no they don't make them like they used to!!!! Mine was my present to me. Hopefully it will last the rest of my days!

  2. I did a big stock-up at Costco. Haven't been for at least 3 months. Meats in the freezer, fresh spinach/salad/cucumbers for some big winter salads and various other things running low.

I am using the last bag of frozen spinach from my April veggie stockup (back when store freezers were nearly empty?). Crustless quiche in the oven. That will get me 4 meals along with a slice of cranberry/walnut bread from Costco.

I aim to eat salads for the next 3 dinners. I have feta cheese, coked bacon in the freezer and the above freshies. Sounds delish right now and hubster is in the mountains on a 3d ski weekend so I'm batchin' it ;-) I left freezer meals up there last time we left so he's eating well too.

I'm not planning further ahead than this.

All January bills are paid and 1 paycheck to come still. I'm not a shopper anyway so I'm not one of those feeling like I am missing out.

My hand mixer is a KitchenAid from the thrift store. I don't remember exactly but I know it was under $10.

I'm enjoying winter and continue with my art of quilting and plenty of reading.

    Wishing everyone a terrific week!

    1. Sounds like your quiet time taken care of. Enjoy your time. Your meals sound delish to me. Good for you on getting the stock up done and everything full.
I still have a check coming this month as well - but I am good. Don't shop other than groceries or animal stuff - just not a shopper.
Have a great week and enjoy your solitude.

    1. Creepy - not a common occurrence here. Usually only happens on Memorial Day weekend for the race.

  4. I'm stocked up on everything, even a certain amount of meat. I can't do any more because I don't have a stand alone freezer. Was a little worried about winter food shortages, but that does not seem to be the case.

I, too, ordered a magazine for the first time in years. It was Victoria (or Victorian, I can't remember). Every time I look at the old fashioned china and beautiful gardens and lovely wooden furniture I just drool. I have long felt I was a reincarnated Victorian. :D

    1. Glad to hear you are well stocked. Let's hope that shortages are common any more.
Good for you - on the magazine. I am sure you will enjoy it.
I think I would have been a good pioneer gal. That is what I enjoy.
      Have a good one.

  5. Wrote a long comment and Firefox wouldn't let me post it. :'(

Anyway, has anyone used Decluttr to sell DVDs and books? Or any other similar sites? I'd like to hear opinions. Husband has cleared out dozens of DVDs, and the library isn't taking donations for the foreseeable future.

    1. I have not used that. Maybe someone on here has. Last ones I got rid of I just donated to the thrift store.
Hope someone can give you advice.

    1. I think 4 eat a lot!!!! WOW - 8 babies. I had 8 a few years back - divided between in and out door. It is amazing how much something so little eats!!!
It was a great soup week. Sunshine has been rare and I have sure loved seeing it now and then.
      Have a good one.

    2. Imagine what 16 eat!! We have 16 barn cats. They are not feral. They just live in the barn and are not afraid of us, just not used to being handled. They "talk" to me plenty and we feed them well. They have a nice large barn filled with hay/straw to sleep in.) I've had people accuse me of neglect which is why I explained so much above. We go through 2-4 Big bags a month. Depends on who feeds them. I'm a bit more generous.

    3. 16!!!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness - that's a lot of kitties. Bless your heart for taking care of them. You don't have to explain here, we all love fur babies.
Thank you for providing for them. Blessings

  8. I love to read about your home and the animals you see. It is comforting to me. I know that sounds strange but you go about your life and caring for your home and those around you. I finally quit work and will only pick up one 3 day a month job for now. I enjoy it and it gives me something to look forward to every month. I am now back at home and enjoying getting to know my home again. Seems like the last 10 months all I did was the bare basics and now I get to care for my home and play in the kitchen and really appreciate it. Take care. P.S. I started reading your blog before I saw you the Proverbs 31 Women FB page.

You probably need to take a few days to just decompress!
      Have a good one.

  13. Enjoy your delayed holiday celebration with your family! It's snowing a bit so that will add to the festive day. My oldest daughter and I always say that a celebration doesn't have to be on "the" day.

Seeing military planes fly over can be unnerving. It may be something as simple as training. I used to live on an Air Force base and was used to planes flying over, breaking the sound barrier and rearranging the pictures on the walls.

Reading about you ladies subscribing to magazines sounds like a little lift that would be welcome now. We are getting seed catalogs but the Urban Farmer enjoys those more than I do. Actually, I figured out how to check out magazine on the library's web site. They don't have all the ones I like but still it's free.

    1. A celebration can be any day you are with people you love. We had a wonderful day. It was just so nice.
I saw the deal on the magazine and just figured "why not?" I haven't done anything for myself much for ages - so it will be enjoyable.

It is snowing here right now - been doing that off and on for a couple days now.
      Love the verse.

  14. It is in my heart as well. God has entrusted us with living in perilous times. But he said "lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." xoxo

  15. Greetings, Cheryl and all. Military was likely shuttling troops to DC to provide security for the inaugural events. I have a friend that is a PO on a transportation detail and he's assigned to DC Metro this week. Did a little stock-up to replenish items I've used in my pantry over the holidays -- and bought a second carton of coffee creamer, thinking I was just about out. The one I'd recently purchased was hiding behind the milk carton, and I thought THAT one was the one I was finishing. So now I have 2 quarts of half-and-half in the refrig. Luckily the expiration dates are into March! Cooked at home most evenings last week -- chicken in the crock with apples and dried cranberries; meatloaf; pizza (bought refrigerated cheese and added additional toppings I had at home), and made a pot roast with potatoes and carrots in the crock. Would up having mid-afternoon appetizers with a friend, so only had a very light dinner last night. Pot roast leftovers tonite and will make pulled BBQ for sandwiches tomorrow. I kept dinners easy (crock pot style and leftovers) this week, and I decided to look into refinancing my townhome. Lots of paperwork got shuffled and submitted this week and I'm shaving 2% off my interest rate, and they waived the appraisal, since I've been here less than 5 years. Whoo hoo!!!! Will apply that savings to paying down the principle each month.

    1. You are probably right on planes - just odd to see.
Yay on extra creamer - you will use it.
Those meals all sound so yummy. Love being able to use things in additional meals.
Congrats on saving 2%!!!! That is great. It's a good time for that now.

  16. Always inspired by your productive weeks and delicious meals you create Cheryl! Lot's of stocking up for myself last week because the coupons/clearance were too good to pass up!

I was able to get three makeup items for for free and then pay as little as 2 cents for two mascaras. I also was able to get some packs of Keebler cracker snack packs of 8 for a dollar with coupons and some new Sunmaid raisin snack bites for free (two bags). Two toothpaste for .59 each and more that I can't remember at the moment. Hope you stay warm and have a wonderful week!

      Thank you!

  17. Strange to see the jets...it sure does make a person wonder. Any time I see one flying over, I wonder what is up. Don't see many here, but do see one every now and then.

A loaded hamburger is as fine a meal as I could ever want. Well, I like onion, mayo and tomato, fried onions if I don't have tomato. Dill pickles on the side. YUMMY!
