Just a quick and gentle reminder that so many do not have what we have. So many do not have family or any support system. So many do not have homes or shelter. So many just need a little hand up. We can help!
It is starting to get cold outside and for some reason these things come to mind most this time of the year. People need some help all year long - but cold weather just makes our hearts open a little more!
Being down on ones luck could easily happen to anyone. I always think "for only by the grace of God".
Most of us have family that would help - we have friends. Hopefully we would be OK. Many don't have that network and are all alone in this world.
If you can donate to a food pantry or soup kitchen, please think about it. If you can't get out and buy goods, or stop by and donate from your stock - maybe send the pantry money or a GC to use to buy supplies. I have a former alum from high school who does so much to help our side of town and I donate funds to him often to buy goods. He gives out bags of groceries at different locations - no questions asked.
Food, health and beauty items, laundry items and pet items are always welcome at food pantries. Many people just think food - but so many things are needed to help on a daily basis. One can go to Dollar Tree to buy bottles of laundry detergent, 4 packs of TP (they can be divided at pantry), multi packs of toothbrushes (again divided), deodorant, shampoo, soap, pet food - all kinds of things that are needed and won't cost you a lot.
Beans and rice products, pasta sauces, pasta, soups (even Ramen multi packs), cereal, peanut butter, jelly, etc. can be purchased cheaply as well. Watch the sales and clearance at the grocery.
Maybe you know a family that needs supplies - but you know they would be very embarrassed to accept help. Buy a GC (what you can afford - anything would help) and mail it to them. A card to a store that sells grocery goods would be best - but whatever they may need. To avoid them knowing it was you - list BOTH the mailing and return address as theirs. BE SURE YOU HAVE CORRECT ADDRESS!!!!!!!! I am sure gas cards would be helpful as well.
SHELTERS will be filling up soon. Think about donating socks, gloves, hats, scarves anything warm. Maybe if you have extra blankets or pillows you could donate - that may make someone's night warmer and comfortable. You can often donate clothes. Coats.
Remember there are shelters for men, and for women and children. Check your local listings to see where they are and call and see what they may need. Some women and children may have left with just what was on their backs - so even gently used clothing would be loved.
Another thing might be to check with your area school and see if they know a child who may be in need of a decent pair of shoes or a coat. If you can - donate one so that child doesn't have to be the "kid without" and bullied.

I have MANY ideas for another post of things we can do to help out the holidays for those without or those who have no one (nursing homes, etc.). I will do another blog about those. I will include ideas for those ladies who may be alone and just want to start a new tradition or need ideas of what they can do.
Just a little food for thought. IF you woke up in a warm bed, ate a meal, had clean clothes to wear - you are fortunate. Not everyone is.
Let us each do a little to help and give back.
Blessings!
I agree. So many of those who are less privileged are out of sight, out of mind. As you know I've been knitting scarves for a warming station that will open up soon. There are two bags of pantry items in the garage ready for pick-up. I hadn't thought of laundry detergent but that is definitely a good idea to add. It doesn't have to cost a lot but if we all pitched in and gave a little we can do a lot.
ReplyDeleteTake care, stay well.
Thank you so much for what you do. Yes we can all do a little and it will change a lot. What seems like nothing to us, could seem like GOLD to another.
DeleteThanks
Thank you, Cheryl. All wonderful ideas! I look forward to reading more, especially for nursing homes, as those folks are too often overlooked at the holidays. We'll be putting together some donations including old, clean towels to drop off at a local animal rescue. Petco or other gift cards can be used (by them) to buy pet food, too. In these times, and with varying restrictions, it's good to think outside of the box. Thanks again! --Elise.
ReplyDeleteThank YOU! Yes, pets is on my list as well. So much can be done for a little money.
DeleteWe can help in small ways and mean the difference in a human or animal life. Isn't that what it is all about?
Thanks for helping.
Absolutely. There are so many homeless in our area now and sometimes we see them on street corners with their family and belonging piled around them. The big thing we do is carry water in our vehicle and hand it out everywhere we go. After Covid hit the water fountains were all turned off so just a drink of water became difficult. When we began we were shocked at the gratitude. One man told us that that bottle of water was more valuable to him than a $5 bill. In our town we have a center where the homeless can go to take showers, charge phones and wash their clothes. They are always asking for clothing and an easy way for us to donate is to just send directly from Amazon to donate items like socks and underwear. I often wonder if there are children who are going to bed hungry right here in our neighborhood. We pray about this often and sometimes the direction is surprising but God knows the need so just ask Him.
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat about the water. Little things.
DeleteI see a lot of homeless around as well. We have a soup kitchen that feeds anyone not far up the road, and it is always full, especially in cold weather. Hot coffee, soup or hot chocolate could be just the thing needed to keep someone going.
I don't know of any place like that that offers such wonderful amenities here. We have shelters, but most are down town and that doesn't help those on various sides of town.
he children - that can just break your heart. It sure isn't their fault.
Maybe check with the area school and see if there is anyone who might need help.
Our nearby elementary school has a very poor group of kids that attend there so they all get free breakfast and lunch. Then there is the backpack ministry for weekends. Thank goodness these kids get these two meals everyday.
DeleteThat is great - we have that as well. We have the backpack ministry as well - sending home with something for weekend.
DeleteLove that this happens.
Thank you for this blog post Cheryl! It's a great reminder of how we can help others in need. Your blog is always informative!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome. We are all important in this world and it is our place here to help.
DeleteThank you!
Yes, a wonderful post and a good reminder. Starting after Labor Day, if I find a BOGO sale on items I use, I'll keep one and the other (free item) goes into a bag for my holiday food bank donation. You'd be surprised how quickly this adds up and it really doesn't cost me a thing. The same can be done with other household items, such as Kleenex in a 4-pack, 2-packs of sanitizer wipes, etc.
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful and such a good idea. Sure people are hungry all the time - but being hungry AND cold has to suck. We all deserve the right to the basics.
DeleteJust think if everyone that could - did just a little - there would be no problem.
Thank you.
You’re so right, Cheryl, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. I love the Little Free Pantries where people can go and either give food or get food if they need it. There are no papers to fill out and no lines. Just take what you need for a meal, no questions asked and no one there to be embarrassed about it all.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had those around here - as I love the idea. I do think people here would be greedy and take everything or there would vandalism. It is such a wonderful concept.
DeleteWe are just so blessed
We have those here. I have never seen anyone at them but maybe they go in less conspicuous times of day.
DeleteMay go when others can't see them. I can understand that - neighbors do talk sadly!
DeleteAt least once a month I pick up a package of food to add to my grocery shopping. Our Co-op makes up bags of groceries that you can purchase and add to the cart that is taken to our food bank. We also give cash every year so turkey or ham can be purchased.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Wonderful. That is neat that the Co-op does that. Many people forget about real meat - so that is wonderful.
DeleteTHANK YOU
This is lovely and so true - and I love all the ideas in the comments, too. One thing I may add - feminine hygiene products are the #1 item in demand in most shelters - they are SO expensive (and taxed) and lack of such really impacts the dignity of those already lacking. An organization near me does a twice yearly women for women drive and distributes to both shelters and low income high schools.
ReplyDeleteVery true. That can be a problem for many women. I am not sure where you live, but here many of the Dollar Stores sell pads and such very cheaply - however they are not the same quality. Yes products can be very expensive.
DeleteThere are just so many things we all take for granted. We are truly blessed.
Thanks
All really great ideas! My church runs a once a week breakfast program all year round (twice a week during the worst of Covid) and our Out of the Cold dinner program starts Nov. 1st. We also run a "boutique" during both meals and you are so right - it's not just clothes but toiletries and even backpacks and tote bags that are in high demand.
ReplyDeleteMy city took over many hotels during lockdown and used them to house the homeless and this will continue until next Spring - but some poor souls just won't go and prefer to stay on the streets - it is so very sad.
How wonderful that the meals are provided. So many things are needed for sure. Backpacks and totes would be essential to carry things! Great idea.
DeleteI wish our city would do that with old hotels or buildings. We have specified shelters and they do open 'warming stations' in frigid weather to get out of the weather. We have so many homeless and so many empty buildings - it just makes sense.
I know some just don't want to go. Sad.
ReplyDeleteWhat we do, and have been doing forever, is send our homeless shelter checks on a regular basis. They know more than we do what they need, so this works for us. We also have a little free pantry and we go there from time to time to drop off non-perishables. Great post btw.
Thank you! Yes, they know their needs and the funds help a bunch. We have several food pantries around to help with food - but just not enough shelters in the outskirts of town. They should be more widely dispersed, not just downtown.
DeleteThanks for helping!
Amen.
ReplyDeleteThanks - wouldn't it be lovely if everyone felt this way?
DeleteThose of us who are "comfortable" really don't have any idea what it would be like to do without. The ladies have good suggestions for items most people wouldn't consider.
ReplyDeleteBeing comfortable is nice - and I have done without - but have never been homeless or starving. That is something I can't imagine.
DeleteLove all the suggestions.
Wonderful post Cheryl. Thanks Jean
