Weekly Wrap-Up 10/10

Happy Sunday.  Hope this finds everyone well and safe and happy!
Fall has still not really come to our area.  We have been having lovely temperatures.  Rain - lots of rain this past week.  You had to jump in and do whatever you needed to do outside in between rain showers.
This weekend has been warm.  It looks like temps in 70's this coming week.

I have had an emotional week with my kitties.  Blackie cat, has been very unwell this week.  It just kept getting worse and then he decided not to eat or drink at all.  His eyes looked so sad, and he didn't want to be touched.  I truly thought I was going to lose him.  He had so many symptoms that Lilly did with excess fluid/enlarged heart before her passing.
Well yesterday I finally got him in the carrier and went to the emergency vet.  What a story that was!  So many hoops to go through with all the C rules!!!!  I couldn't even go in for over and hour and half to be with him.  Any way - it turned out he had a bad mouth/gum infection.  Huge long lasting antibiotic shot and pain meds and he is home!  I have him in a large kennel at the moment - wanted to keep him secluded over night to make sure he didn't react badly to anything.  He ate like crazy last night!  Not as much this morning - but he is on the mend.  So happy.
Not a cheap day at all.  Nothing cheap about emergency medicine!  WOW  I am glad I could do it.  Love my babies.

My week:
  • I did get the entire yard mowed
  • Returned library book to drop-off.  Didn't even go in
  • Did a lot of yard clean-up in between rain. There is so much to do.  Seems there is never a shortage of work
  • Picked more tomatoes.  Picked another bouquet.  Those volunteer tomato plants are  blooming!!!!!  Too funny
  • Aired the house most of the week.  Did have to turn on AC a couple afternoons due to humidity
  • I did stop at a brand new Dollar Tree about 6 blocks away.  Full of lots of craft stuff.  I got a few goodies.  They had 32 oz. peroxide - so I got a couple more to add to stock.  I use instead of bleach.  I got more little glue tubes, a couple wonderful smelling candles, some lollipops and a couple cook books for gifts (I showed those earlier this week).
The Wyler drink packets were a 10 pack!!!!!  Love those little glue tubes - usually the right size for a repair.  Tootsie pops - $1 and pumpkin scent candles!!!!!
  • Stopped at feed store and did a small stock.  Needed corn
  • I then stopped at a super Kroger across the road.  Not my usual store.  Goodness they were well stocked!  I was impressed.  They carry everything from clothes, dishes, toys to food.  I got an extra carbonator for the Soda Stream (to have this winter) and some fruit.  Got bananas - .39/lb., seedless grapes - .99/lb. and apples .77/lb..  If you get the opportunity to shop different stores, you may find different stock levels!  It sometimes pays to go to new places
  • Changed the furnace filter and the batteries in the smoke detectors.
  • Just doing all the normal stuff
Meals this week:
Chicken tamales and salad
Cheesy mac/beef/broccoli
Small pizza
Fish sandwich, oven fries and sliced tomatoes
Potato salad and sliced tomatoes & fruit (busy day)
Loaded hotdogs and potato salad
Burger - too upset to eat much then got home late

How was your week?  Did you get any deals or save any money?  Any gardens still active?
Love hearing from you all.

I hope you all have a great week.  I hope your are still enjoying mild temps.  May you all be safe and healthy this week.
Blessings from my humble little home to yours.

Each  one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you will always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work.

  1. I wish my garden had EVER been active but the high heat made that a pipedream. Yesterday I picked red pear tomatoes for the first and only time. 1 quart from 2 plants. The 2 Sungolds yielded 5. Hubster found 1 cucumber hidden away. 3 standard size tomato plants yielded none.

All of the garden beds in the front yard were cleared yesterday along with a lot of weeding. (I had a knee replacement late July so my activity was severely limited for quite some time.) They are all put to bed unless I can get some compost delivered soon. I miss a good harvest but I love a cleaned up garden.

Today we will harvest the spaghetti squash-a whopping 5 off of 4 plants. We'll glean what we can from the 4 tomato plants and pull those as well.

Tomorrow we freeze, end of season.

    Happy Sunday everyone!

    1. Elle that is such a bummer on the garden. I guess the plus is you got SOME! Next year will be better. Maybe you can think of adding some sun screening or something next year.
5 spaghetti squash is more than I ever grew!!!!
Hope your knee is doing much better.
      Have a great week.

  2. Cheryl, I'm so glad Blackie is doing better. We love our fur babies. Our weather is still in the low 70's. Nighttime temps are getting down to freezing in some areas. We did have a pretty good crop of veggies this year. We took down the tomato plants about 2 weeks ago they were just not ripening. We have them in a box ripening up. We have been doing prepper stuff and stocking up on some things. Gosh there is so much to think about, alternative ways to do things makes my head spin. Need to be prepared though. The freezers are over full so need to rearrange things. I hope you have a good day.

    1. Thank you. I let him out of the kennel this morning and he was happy. Not too sure he will trust me for a bit!!! LOL - except I have the food!!!!

Cool nights here - but nothing near freezing. WOW
I may take tomato plants out this week or next - and just let the green ones left do their thing.
Stocking is important and it is wonderful to have a full freezer! That is such a blessing. Just think, you could even cut down consumption a little and stretch it for longer.
There is a lot to do - but I think we will all be OK. God is watching over us!
Have a great one my friend!!

  3. Thankful your kitty is on the mend. I know our local vets are struggling, as well, and they have often had to end their hours by 1:00, when there is a 4-hour wait to see a vet. Boarding and day care now has to be reserved well in advance, as they've had to limit capacity, due to staffing issues. It's crazy!!!!

I was out of state for a week, thru Oct. 2nd, and spent most of this week playing catch-up with laundry and housekeeping. Because I had a carpenter coming to do some repairs on my deck, I pulled my deck-rail planter boxes (where I have my herbs), and cut back or pulled spent veggie plants in my larger planters. I left two tomato plants that still have some green tomatoes that need to ripen, but I picked the last of the green peppers, pulled those plants, and cut my chives way back for the winter. I did dry two full trays of basil, two full trays of oregano, and one last tray of parsley, all of which were added to my pantry.

My deck repairs were finished, and I just have to do the painting. And, they installed the bird spikes on the support beam under my deck, to keep the pigeons and mourning doves from roosting there and leaving their prolific droppings on cars parked underneath my deck. I'll get some of the painting done today, but am borrowing a larger ladder next weekend to do the exterior sections and those areas I can't easily reach from the deck itself (2nd story, over garage slab).

This week takes me away for a 'girls getaway' with several widow friends who are also in my bible study and book groups. Should be a fun couple of days.

    1. He is acting fine - just not wanting to eat a lot yet. Last night he scarfed a whole can+ of food. He was pretty drugged and he was hungry!!!! At least he is wondering in and out of greenhouse and he didn't want to go in when he felt so bad.
Yes, the vet had numbered spots - you call, they come out and get info and pet - you wait outside. At the end got to go in. Had limit of rooms and it was crazy busy.

Glad yo got a trip in. Coming home is always busy. Good going on getting all those goodies from the planters.
Your deck will be nice when all done.
Oh how nice a girls trip! HAVE FUN!!!

  4. I’m so glad Blackie cat is on the mend. Sometimes a visit to the vet and a shot is what they need.may be expensive but so worth it for them. Bailey bought me several of the Wyler drink packets from the Dollar Tree, they are a bargain for sure. Our cherry tomatoes are still putting out a few. It’s still warm here so it’s good weather for them. I hope you are no longer upset and have a terrific week, Cheryl.

    1. I feel much better now that I know what was wrong with kitty. He is still mending - will be for a few days - much you can tell he feels better.
If you haven't tried the strawberry/lemonade you should. That is tasty!!!! Only ones left that are 10 to a pack. Most are 6 and some are 8.
Yay, of the cherry toms. Take advantage as long as possible. They are sure loving these warm days!
      Have a good one.

  5. So happy for you and Blackie!

I am in my 70s and have a lot of arthritis in my back...meaning I work at the rate of a very slow slug! I work until I hurt and then I quit for awhile. I was determined to do a big job in my garden, and I did. This past week, I pulled up my veggie plants and composted as much as I could. We are going to have our first frost in northern Idaho tonight. My next job, which I plan to start today, is to get all of my garden tools and decor put away. I need to inspire my husband to button up a small engine and help me move all of the patio furniture under cover. This probably won't happen today, but I'm gonna try!

Best wishes to you and all of your readers.

    1. Slow and steady wins the race!!!! Frost? YIKES. I am not ready for that!
Sounds like you got a lot done and have great plans for today. Don't over do it!
Thank you and have a good week.

  6. Wow, I am glad your kitty is okay. I am sure you wondered where the infection came from. It rained for five days straight here and our yard is just mud. We have red clay so we are staying far away from the yard. Our only shopping was 10 pounds of 93% lean organic ground beef. We sealed it in 8 ounce packages and likely have enough til Spring.

    1. Many outdoor cats have problems with their teeth and gums - so I guess I understand. Just didn't know before that was what it was. Glad that was it.

Oh no - I guess good reason to stay inside!
Great going on the beef. That will make a lot of good meals this winter.
      Have a good one.

  7. I hope the kitty makes a full recovery. I worried about my stray kitty while we were gone last week, so my dad came over a few times to leave food for it. I saw it this morning, our first morning home, and was glad to see it didn’t forget us! Sounds like you had a good week. I rarely go to the Dollar store, but think I should start!

    1. Those strays DO find a way directly into your heart!!!! Glad your baby didn't forget you!
I did. I don't go to DT often - but sometimes yo can find some good stuff.

  8. I'm glad your kitty is on the mend, poor boy. Animals are a worry as they can't tell you what's wrong. It's the same here in the UK, pets have to be handed over to the vet while their human waits outside.
Thankfully we had a good crop of tomatoes this year.
    Wishing you a better week.

Super happy yo had a good crop of tomatoes. So many things can be made from them.
Thanks and yo have a good one as well.

  9. So glad your kitty will be ok! It’s so hard when they are injured or sick and can’t tell us what’s wrong or where they hurt! I heard it’s really difficult to get in to see a veterinarian in our area! Didn’t realize it was the same everywhere else!
The nights are getting down in the 30’s here in the PNW, so Friday I pulled up the carrots, planted garlic and thinned the lettuce seedlings I started last month, then put the cold frame over them. Hoping I can grow lettuce for part of the winter months, anyway! Earlier in the week I picked all the ripening tomatoes and sweet peppers and made a pot of stewed tomatoes to freeze and use later for soups. Got the recipe from a friend. Still have Sun Gold tomatoes on the vines but the other plants are pretty much goners! The rest of the garden is all done. Now time for clean up! At least my hubby helps with those chores!
    Take care!

    1. Thanks. Yes it seems to be difficult to get in every where. My regular vet doesn't even answer the phone now - you have to leave a message and they get back to you when they want. May not be my regular vet much longer!

That is chilly! UGH. I am so not ready for cold weather. Sound like you have been doing great with end f harvest. Glad you have help tearing it all out.
      Have a good one

  11. So glad Blackie is on the mend with just a gum infection and nothing more serious than that. No deals this weekend, I stayed away from all but one store where I found some autumn lights and a couple of fall decorations. I don't need them as I have so much already but you know how that goes? It's gonna get cold for a couple of nights this week so they've already warned us that any garden goodies need to be picked or they will be lost to the hard freeze.

Something can always tempt us! Giving in once in a while is fun.
I sure hate all these comments about cold weather. Dread that.
Make sure to get in all your goodies.

  12. Glad to hear that Blackie's issues were relatively easy to treat. I'd say he was definitely feeling better if he ate so well.

    Take care, stay well.

  13. Poor Blackie! Glad you took him to get some help. I follow a blog written by a retired dentist and she was very careful to descale the kitties' teeth and they still had dental problems. The boys got a bath, mani-pedi and a teeth cleaning this morning. It was long overdue. Washed all their bedding and hopefully will eliminate some of the eau de dogue.

We also have a bunch of volunteer tomato plants. Birds must be busy. lol Picked green beans this morning. Probably the last of them as there are no blooms on the plants.

Went to Joann's to buy some seam binding and the clerk said to check out the free table and take what I wanted. I found a nice three-wick candle in a nice dish that had been 30 bucks. Smells nice too.

We drove past the new Costco and they are really coming along. Supposed to open the 29th of this month. Need to go to Rural King to make sure we have enough chicken supplies.

    We are abundantly blessed!

Wow still getting green beans. Good for you.

FREE table at Joanne's? WOWZA - that is pretty darn cool.
Never been in a Costco. I have been to Sam's - but not for a long while.
      Good to stay stocked.
INDEED we are blessed - God is so good.

  14. Been absolutely loving temps in the 70s the past three weeks, though with temps falling to the low 60s for highs and 40s for lows starting this weekend, I've been working very hard to get everything done. Cukes and zukes are done, but cherry tomatoes are still producing at about 25 per day. I'll be picking the green ones this weekend. They'll ripen in a brown paper bag with a ripe apple. I'm at over 1800 tomatoes from 16 plants (1 did not produce) so far. Harvested marigold, cosmos and thithonia seeds yesterday. Waiting for the zinnias to go to seed.

Someone here in the trailer park has organized a produce giveaway every Tuesday. The food looks like the day-old items from a grocery store, starting to go a little bad but still quite edible. Last week I got 6 honeycrisp apples, 3 oranges, a salad cuke, a package of 8 sesame seed buns, and 2 lbs of pasta in a broken package. Great deal!!

Been washing windows, doing yard work, hung out laundry yesterday, washed bird feeders today, crossing off chores on my Snow Flies list right and left. I have so much energy this time of year!

Glad Blackie is doing better. Hope everyone has a safe and frugal week!

Good work om your list. You get done you can come by my house!!!
Thanks. You have a good week.
