Having Fun - Play - Boost the Mind

Howdy to everyone.  So glad to be here today, as a new day starts.  Hope this finds all of you well.  It is 2 weeks until Christmas Day!
It is colder here this morning - got up to the freezing mark.  Tomorrow will be bitter again - then it warms yet again.  I can do this all winter if it so happens!
I have been out of the house a lot in the past 3 days - and need to buckle down and get busy.  Still several things I want to accomplish - but will not fret, if they don't get done.  Que sera, sera!
Another little memory for me.  My brother Dick and me.  He came home on leave at Christmas and brought me my own Navy suit!  I loved it (still have it).  He was my hero, and I was sure I would marry him!!! I was so angry at my SIL when they got married, I didn't like her for a long time, as she took my brother and my buddy and my future husband!  LOL. We are good friends now!

Do you play games at Christmas?  I know lots of people have all day get togethers and games are a huge part of it.  My niece and her kids and her grand have a day of it, and they just love games.  Made up games, board games, card games, etc.  I think that is neat.

Her is one that could be a game for the family or just something to keep next to your chair, to exercise your brain over the winter!  That is what I am doing.  It is fun and a challenge - and I can't imagine finding all they say there is!!!
Now this would be something to let people do over the entire day - then see who has the most at the end of the visit.  I will work on this at home!

Another fun thing to do - might be to have everyone write down as many lines from holiday movies/shows that they can - that make the name of the movie immediately known.  Then see if everyone agrees.
Like - "you'll shoot your eye out", "God bless us everyone", "every time a bell rings...", "you're a mean one...", "I triple dog dare you".  There are so many phrases out there that instantly make me think of a holiday movie.
Can you think of any?

I think these ideas are fun - as I like trivia, but it really does help keep the mind fresh.  We need to use that old brain of ours every day to keep it fresh and alert.

Here is a bit of trivia.  I love the National Lampoon Christmas Vacation movie - it is so silly.  I just like to laugh, and I do that through the whole show.  It is just plain old silliness, with a little moral point thrown in here and there.
I know this one is not everyone's cup of tea, as there are many others that I won't watch as well.

Throw a little fun in your celebrations and winter.  Have fun and laugh!  It is good medicine!
Have a super day.  Give away a smile today!

  1. Love the picture of you with your brother. We form close attachments to our brothers. I was nine when my youngest brother got married, and I sobbed and sobbed. The other two brothers were enough older than me than I didn't remember much about them being at home.

That is a pretty neat game! It would certainly keeps folks busy for a while.

It is cold and gloomy! Ole Jim said that he didn't think the rain and ice would be too bad later on. We don't plan going anywhere so we don't mind, except for the folks who do have to be out and about. The kitties probably know how good they have it, nice and cozy in the house.

    1. Yeas, Dick was 13 when I was born. So he is probably 19 or 20 in that picture. We are still close, but boy did I idealize him back then!
I am keeping it next to the chair, so I can do it now and then!
I see a bit of sun at the moment, but it is supposed to get wicked cold tonight and the mention of that S word! UGH
Not much I bet. Yes, staying in is the plan. Blackie is curled up on the couch and Bitz must have gotten cold - he is under my covers!

  2. I felt the same way when my brother married. I didn't actually expect to marry him, but I expected to keep house for him and we'd live together at home forever. Did get over that, but it is pretty funny to look back on.

Like the Word Game, not so much the movie game. We didn't do movies much and didn't have TV so most of that goes right over my head. I recognize "you're a mean one" and "God bless us" though. :)

I think it's time for me to get my act together. There's a family birthday before Christmas and another right after New Year ... and I'm *not* ready for either one! Yikes.

Chilly and wet here, but will clear and be *cold*. Just think: very soon the days will be getting longer! :)

    1. I think we gals just idealized our big brothers. Ron was out of the house before Dick - so not as many memories when young with him.
I like Christmas movies - especially the ones that have been around a while. I like fun holiday movies.
I hear you on getting the act together. I have been doing stuff all morning. Birthdays too - oh my.
I am counting down until the official start of winter - want those longer daylight hours!!!!

    1. I have seen it so many times, probably 3 or 4 already this year! I see something new every time. It is soooo funny! Glad to see someone else has my sense of humor and gets it!!

  4. It is a Christmas tradition to play games all afternoon on Christmas Day at our house. Mostly they are silly children games and the winner gets to pick a wrapped prize from the prize basket. These are usually cheap gifts, gift cards and food items. The rule is that anyone can swap prizes won from the prize basket, and that always provides a laugh too. It is a good way of bringing the generations together, and since we always have a couple of non family members that don't know our children so well, its always a good way to spend time together without having to "chat".
I have just made three jars of pickled apple slices and my house smells wonderful. I saw the recipe on Pinterest and thought it would go well with leftovers after Christmas, although I'd make it again just for the aroma. Take care, Louise.

    1. That sounds like fun. I like the idea of silly little gifts and getting to shake it by trading. My niece does a lots of games with her kiddos and they have little gifts, cash and lotto tix as prizes.
Oh goodness, I bet your house does smell wonderful. What a fun thing to make.

  5. Lovely photo of you and your brother. He clearly was a great big brother. I chuckled at you being so upset with your SIL.

I have photos of my siblings playing cards when my children were babies at Christmas time. I don't recall joining them, but I would have been busy managing the kids. Since we no longer get together that's no longer a tradition.

    1. Funny, she still tells the story of me saying "I hate you" as a little kiddo. Yikes - can't believe I didn't get in trouble for that. We laugh about it - because we are all so close.
I think as youngsters it was always fun to have games to play. Either something we got for Christmas or another game. My mom and dad and my older siblings always played cards.

  6. I love that photo, Cheryl. Your brother is adorable. You look very cute too in the sailor outift. How sweet he must be to bring you the sailor uniform, I had an uncle that was like that when he was single.

I think games are nice, I saw mary's nest on tube and she was talking about games. I looked through some easy ones, and I ordered, Racko, Waterworks and Saboteur. None of them broke the bank and seem maybe easy enough. I like the one you posted, I may have to keep that by my chair too. Homemade games sound so nice.

We watched 'The Christmas Story' last night because I felt we needed to laugh a bit.

Some phrases I say sometimes are..."Why, are you crazy! Going up Mount Bedford in my bare feet!" (violet from Wonderful Life) and..."I only wear this when I don't care how I look!" lol (violet again) I think some of my favorite movies are Wonderful Life and Bells of St. Mary's and we sure are enjoying 'A Christmas Story' for a funny movie.

Have a sweet Christmas, Cheryl. God bless and be with you, your light up wreaths sound very nice and cheerful. ~Amelia

    1. Hello Amelia - nice to have you stop by. Your games you got sound fun. I have played Racko before.
Christmas Story is just fun. "You'll shoot your eye out!" The kiddos are so funny and the narrator (as Ralphie) does a fantastic job. One of my favorites I watch every year.
I love It's a Wonderful Life and Bells of St. Mary's. Both are just such good stories.
Thank you. You and yours have a lovely Christmas.

  7. Cheryl I love that movie! I love the silly happy type of movies and like you have probably watched it 3 or 4 times already this year.
I also like the Madea Christmas movie; it is spitting snow here (north of you) and temps going down....very dreary looking.
I have been busy in the kitchen using up bits and pieces and making homemade ready meals for the freezer.
Soup simmering on the woodstove now.

    1. I am glad I am not the only one. That is one I can watch anytime of the year. I have never seen Madea Christmas. May have to look for that one. I like several types - just not into the romantic ones anymore (Hallmark). I can't do Elf either - not a fan of Will F.
It has been spitting snow and ice here for a while - it is getting windy and cold. Your soup on the stove sounds perfect!!!
      Stay warm!
