Howdy all. It is soooooo cold this morning. I know I am spoiled. Weather says it is 12*F - my thermometer says about 18*. Windy too - but not as bad as last night. I have several sticks to pick up at some point, and the chairs out back were all topsy turvy. Trash blown in the yard picked up. Surprised the yard decorations across the street are still there! We had some 60 mph gusts last night. Today's high - maybe 20*. YUCK. It is supposed to warm up this weekend for a bit - Yay.
Yesterday did finally get into low 40's and the neighbor 2 doors down was mowing about 4PM yesterday!
Just a couple things - one bought and one made. Just wanted to share.
So it can still be had!
I mentioned making a throw for my niece with baby clothes from her 3. Well, it is complete. I just want to say I am not calling it a quilt at all. I know there are wonderful quilters out there and would never want to insult their work. This is a whimsical and fun throw.
A full image. It is backed with a super fuzzy store-bought throw. The denim is from a pair of Uncle G's jeans, and the binding I made from a top I had. Making the binding was almost the worst part! (So, we are also included in their memories too.)Lower half. Includes a handmade bootie of one, a bow tie - even zippered items. Tried to make it a 3-D type item. The booties could be removed at any point if wanted - not harmed at all.Upper half. Part of a tutu in top left corner - another bootie in a pocket and ruffles that hang in middle.I hated cutting up the clothes - but she said do it! It was fun to make, but tough too. Wanted it to be totally different than anything else I had made her. I have lots of scraps left and have a couple ideas of plans to make her something else after the holidays.
This sure made my back hurt. I have very little floor space to spread something that big out. It is heavy too (and warm). My worktable could use some improvements (an old dining room table). Not to mention this body isn't as young as it used to be! LOL
She is coming this morning to get it. I hope she loves it - I think she will.
She has asked me to make her oldest a T-shirt blankie for his grade school graduation in May. Good thing I love these kids!!!!!
Have a warm and wonderful day. May everything you touch turn out wonderful.
20 days until Christmas!!!!!!!
I am a rabid quilter and this IS a quilt!!!! Yay you for doing it. How special.
ReplyDeleteStay warm. We are a balmy 28F this morning, dense fog and black ice. Glad I don't need to get in my car. Lots of dumb winter drivers here that think studded tires take care of their refusal to learn how to drive in our conditions. (transplants from warm states by the 10s of 1000s in recent years).
Happy Thursday everyone!
Thank you - you are being kind. I don't see it as quilting in a traditional sense - but it was work and fun.
DeleteShe LOVED it by the way. She has 4 others that I have made over the years - from her graduation thru 3 kiddos.
Glad you didn't have to go out - yes, crazy driver's always show up - it is like people forget how to drive from one year to the next!
I love your throw and such wonderful memories it will bring! I'm sure she will like it.
ReplyDeleteThank you - all special outfits she loved. She came and got it and said she loved it. Couldn't wait to curl up with it!
DeleteThe throw is fabulous, full of memories! I'm sure she will be well pleased. For a project like that, it would be nice to have an area where a table could be set up to work. Crawling around on the floor is difficult for us well-seasoned folks. ha!
ReplyDeleteIt is certainly cold this morning. The brightly shining sun is deceptive. Looking forward to the 40's and 50's next week.
Yes mam, crawling on the floor is a bit much anymore. That is why my back was so sore. Up and down. I may need to think about getting some table I can set up for such projects.
DeleteShe did like it.
Yes indeed, it is cold. Looks pretty - but it is so cold.
The throw is absolutely wonderful, and I'm sure your niece and her kiddos will enjoy cuddling under it and telling stories.
ReplyDeleteIt's warmed up slightly here this morning, -14C/7F this morning and feels so much nicer than yesterday's cold.
Thank you - she said she loved it. Just in time for the holidays!
DeleteHoly cow UP to 7F? Yuck - bless your heart. I am not a winter person at all - I just hate the cold.
Very nice
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was a hit
DeleteWow, Cheryl, that's a lot of work! Very nice. :)
ReplyDeleteI see in my weather forecast that we're getting your cold weather tonight. The wind has been ferocious, but is calming a bit, which helps as I'd like to start up the woodstove but hate to burn anything when it is very windy.
On my way to work went by Dollar Store and bought 3 calendars, $1 each. One for me, one for boss lady, one for dear daughter-in-law. Psalms, baby animals, butterflies. Gotta grab those as soon as I see them 'cause they'll get gone in a skinny minute at that price. :)
MaryB
Thank you.
DeleteOh I am sorry - it is still very cold here and still pretty windy. Not as bad as last night though. Stay safe and warm.
I went to Dollar Tree a month or so ago for a calendar. I got - you can guess - kitties! The dollar stores always have pretty ones and a good price. My free outlet, doesn't give them any more.
That is definitely a quilt and it’s lovely. What a treasure it is, and what a treasure you are for putting in all those hours to produce it. I’ve also had the sewing bug recently, made a few new tops for myself.
ReplyDeleteJust going back to my comment about Linda yesterday, I’d just like to clarify that I don’t think she is being selfish when she won’t share recipes, she does and has probably given me a million over the years. But there are a few she won’t because I think she likes to keep, and I have noticed that they seem to be the traditional Polish ones, so I’m sure there is something psychological going on there.
Enjoy the remainder of the week, still lots to be done before I get to the weekend.
Take care, Louise
I would love to make myself something one day. She loved it and that is what matters.
DeleteDidn't mean to imply she was selfish - but she won't be here someday, and a legacy will be lost. I look at recipes like that too. Something we can leave when we leave this earth. Hopefully some day she will share it - so her great food will go forward in time.
That is lovely and how fun although I feel your pain in your back. I get that now after I sew for three hours. I remember sewing for 24 straight hours when I was costuming a show. But you have created a treasure.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am much older than you girl - but I could never, never do the sewing you do. Heck, I had a heck of a time every time I had to re-thread the needle!!!!
DeleteMy niece loved it.
Hiya,Cheryl and Kim, I could not even thread a needle and you both are so brilliant. I’m sitting nice and cosy at my stove. My son and Dil are here and it is raining so hard this afternoon. So don’t feel guilty.
DeleteSylvia
Hi Sylvia. Oh we can do a lot of things if we find it necessary. Kim does amazing work - I could never do what she does. But thank you!
DeleteIt sounds like a lovely way to spend a day. Enjoy the family and the warmth. Glad to see you stop by!
There are things, family things, that need to be written down and passed down. They don't need to be shared *right now*, but they should not be lost. They help give us "our place" in the human family. One of those things is recipes. Another is family stories, why people are as they are, why Aunt Judy won't talk with Aunt Sara, that kind of thing. We read about these things, especially if they are funny things, online and we laugh. Sometimes they are terrible things, but - perhaps need to be known by descendants, warnings.
ReplyDeleteThe one I'm remembering is about why a turkey was always prepared as it was, something about cutting off some part, or tying the bird up in some way. It was Family Tradition, had to be done that way - and finally somebody asked the oldest woman in the family why. She said it was because her mom's oven was small and the turkey had to be that way to fit in. What a joke! :D
MaryB
I agree! So many things are lost to people just not talking. Grandma never talked about the past - daddy never knew so many things, that he should have known. When I started researching the family - I found some stories!!!! I thought they were interesting and surely why grandma wouldn't share much. There was no judgement - just interest on my part.
DeleteMom's mom never talked about a thing. She was a real pip from what I heard. Now mom shared all she knew - but it was mainly just her life. I still haven't found much about her dad's side. Grandma came from money and married poor - I think bitterness had much to do with her not talking.
We just never know - I want to be an open book for future family.
Not everyone feels that way - and that is OK.
I love that story - Probably how a lot of 'traditions' get started.
Your quilt is lovely (and yes it is a quilt) using up those special things from three children is awesome.
ReplyDeleteI loved ribbon candy and wish I could still find it.
God bless.
Well, thank you very much. I know true quilting is a lot of work and a lot more sewing, but I sure do appreciate all the kind words.
DeleteI have always like ribbon candy too. I like the thicker kind, but they had the thin stuff too. Ollies had it.
Cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThe throw is wonderful, Cheryl. Something they will treasure for years to come. I love that you included jeans from Uncle G. 💕
ReplyDeleteRibbon candy, oh what memories! My grandmother had a bowl on her coffee table every Christmas. Talk about nostalgia.
Thank you - I think she sure did like it.
DeleteI have always liked the old-fashioned Christmas candy too. The filled raspberries were always a favorite of mine.
(Little Penpen) what a cute and very special quilt!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteAh, thanks. It was fun to do.
DeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! My great gram and grandma made patchwork quilts, often from flour sacks and scraps of fabric left-over from their sewing. I have one made by my great gram, finished by my grandma, and tied by my mom, aunts, and and I even helped. I took it with me to college and boxed it when I got married. Memories in the quilt for your niece will last a lifetime -- not only for her, but for you, as well! I'm certain she will cherish it forever. Oh, and that candy? Even more memories!
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to make them too. Always got enticed to help tie them off! Yes, the memories are just precious for young and old. I wish I still had one mom made - I do have a lovely hand crocheted granny square bedspread though! Talk about heavy.
DeleteI am glad you have yours.
Yes mam, that is nostalgia right there with the candy. Takes me back to childhood.
That throw is precious!! Great job and what a creative idea. I love it! Especially the 3-D parts! My kids would love that!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. I wanted it to be different from all the others she has that I have made. Just playful and whimsical!
DeleteI love that old time candy! My grandma used to have a dish of it at her house when I was a young girl. Such a great find! I also love the quilt! You put a lot of work into that! It's beautiful and I know it will be treasured!
