Weekly Wrap-Up 6/21

Good morning my friends.  Happy summer here in our neck of the woods.  Summer Solstice was yesterday afternoon and we are officially in summer!  In my opinion it happened a while ago - or so it has felt!
We did have a couple cooler low humidity days and they were lovely.  Now we are back to heat and humidity.  Looks like rain today.  It is needed for sure.  It seems funny to say that after the wet spring we have had.
It rained Friday evening (shower) for about 10-15 minutes and I stood out in the driveway.  I took off my glasses and stood there, face and hands looking skyward - after it ended I put on my glasses and saw that a couple neighbors were watching!  OOPS.  They all gave me the thumbs up and a wave!  Something about a rain shower that brings out the kid in me.  It felt so good.

The garden is growing well.  Tomatoes have lots of blooms and many tiny tomatoes.  I should be able to pick a zucchini in a couple days.  Everything is growing!
It smells so heavenly out back.  The yards around here are full of clover and it smells lovely.
The birdies are sure enjoying the bird baths!  I have to fill up the one just outside the bedroom window about 4X a day.  All the birds drink and bathe - but the blue jays and the robins LOVE taking a dip in the pool!  They are so fun to watch.
I am finally seeing more and more hummingbirds!!!  YAY!

My week:
  • I called in an order to the feed store and went to pick up
  • I finally got to have a one on one meeting with the tax preparer.  I had it planned to go earlier and they closed (thank goodness we got extensions).  I am glad to have that done.  First time in 34 years - I get a refund.  It all had to do with income and health insurance cost
  • Mowed the front yard - back is fine till this week
  • Filled all the feed bins
  • Cut another old t-shirt into hankies
  • I did a lot of cleaning.  All glass/mirror surfaces inside this week.
  • Cleaned nooks and crannies in kitchen - beside both sides of frig.  It is like 2" on each side (store cookie pans on one side and holiday platters on other).  What a cumbersome job!  Dust bunnies? No.  Dust rabbits?  Yes!  Used a wet cloth and a yard stick while laying on the floor - oh my what a sight that had to be!
  • I am dog setting again with the neighbor doggie.  They went camping
  • I walked to a yard sale a half block up the road the other day.  I bought some indiv. baking dishes - not sure if I will keep or gift.  Brand new, never opened - Kohls price tag $34.99.  I paid $5
  • Been sorting through more paper work - so much
  • Got to have AC off a few days - and windows opened
  • Just doing all the normal stuff - laundry in cold, hanging laundry to dry,  making use of what I have, drinking water & Kool-Aid, using dehumidifier water in laundry and using rain water as much as possible (finally had to use the hose this week), staying home.
  • Picked a bouquet of various lillies
Meals this past week:
Cheeseburger and fries
Goulash - used a leftover burger chopped in it
Bean, cheese and salsa tostadas
Baked fish sandwich and coleslaw (home canned)
Homemade Subway sandwich
Homemade chicken nugget rolls
Chef salad topped with chopped leftover nuggets and a smoothie

Homemade Subway-like sandwich - roll from the freezer
Chicken nugget rolls - used hotdog buns

What have you all been up to this week?  Any deals or are you staying home as well?
How is the garden doing?

I keep thinking about going to the Dollar Tree and Menards/Home Depot - and keep talking myself out of it!  I do what I need to, but still not making a lot of trips out.
I guess it doesn't hurt a thing - I don't really need anything - and I am sure I would shop if I went out!  Oh well, when the times is right I will know it.

I hope you all have a wonderful week.  I keep you all in my prayers and wish you all health and safety.
Blessings from my humble home to yours.

  1. Good Morning! Your sandwiches sure look good! We are in for very hot weather this week, I think 100 here on Tuesday. We had a busy week, went visiting to Nieces's and took chocolate milk. Got to see some of her grandkids. The baby came to me but not to Butch. I guess I look like a grandma, lol. We met some of our neighbors and they shared a tomato plant with us, (they have 32 planted) and some borage to plant. They have 19 raised beds with tomatoes and peppers in them. I think they like salsa. yesterday there was a garage sale across the street, got lots of goodies, a queen sheet set, I think it was brand new, (it didn't look like they had ever been used or washed) I washed them up and put them on the bed. They are very nice, Costco/Kirkland brand, a duvet and shams. Those were the big things. A couple of night lights, 2 bath towels sets, a heating pad , 6 doilies and a plastic bag holder. I wish I could post a picture of it it's very cute. We have been eating from home still kind of afraid to eat out among people.

    1. Oh my 100 is hot! Try and stay cool. Glad you got to make that visit - sounds nice.
That's a lot of plants - yep, I would say they like salsa! Nice of them to give you some plants.
Sounds like a good sale. New sheets are so expensive any more, it is nice to be able get them at a cheaper price. Gosh, it sounds like you got a lot good items.
I haven't even thought about going out yo eat yet. I even turned down a family get together today - just not too sure.
      Have a great week.

  2. How neat that you got a refund, Cheryl. Standing in the rain can be fun, especially when it's been hot. What a great yard sale find! I am jealous, lol. My daughter went to one yesterday while I was on the phone with a friend. I told her she ditched me. LOL Your homemade sub sandwich and chicken look so good! Did you make the chicken yourself? I love chicken like that. Sounds like you had a great week. I would love watching the birds in the birdbaths too.

    1. I hope you daughter found some goodies at the sale!
Yes, I just cut up chicken tenders and breaded and fried them. They were pretty yummy. It was so tender.
      Have a great one.

  3. Glad you got a refund,Cheryl. We still have to get our taxes in. Hubby is not well so things have been pushed off on several issues. Great find on those dishes. WOW! I need to do all the windows here in the condo. They have not been done in some time and are cumbersome to do-but really need a good cleaning. Always something...lol
Hope you have a great week-Hugs- Diana

    1. I figured there was a month left of taxes (w/extension) so I better get it done! I hope your hubby gets to feeling better soon.
Windows are such a pain. At least mine all open from the inside and tilt in - which makes it better!

Yep, it always something as Rosanana Rosanana Dana used to say!!! LOL - that's my brothers favorite saying!!!!
      Have a good week.

  4. I'm like you, my excursions are grocery and pet supply stores. I wouldn't mind a trip to one of the dollar stores or even Home Sense but for now I'm staying out of those places. Helps me save money!

    Take care and stay well!

    1. It sure does save money, I give you that. I know there are things I might like to buy - but I don't really NEED them.
Best to be safe than sorry.
      Have a good week.

  5. I only shop when I have to and usually 8am as few people about then. Non essential shops opened last week and some people queued all the night before to get into Primark. Not me! Good to get extra cleaning done.

    1. Isn't it crazy that people are so desperate to go shopping? I find my home my sanctuary - I don't really need other places.
Same here shopping once and again - and staying my distance.
      Have a good one.

  6. I'm with you on going to stores. We had to go to Sam's Club on Saturday but other than the Dollar Store for water for the office and our Walmart grocery pickup, we've been staying out of the stores. We have gone to a couple of restaurants but we've agreed I can cook better, so I doubt we'll be going out very often in the future. Tonight I made homemade pizza & it really was much better than take out.
When I decided to make pizza I also decided to toss the old yeast. I made bread Saturday and it only partially rose. I had gotten some year at the first of the month and put it in the freezer. I used it for the pizza crust. This yeast is very lively. :)
    Have a great week.

    1. Glad to hear you are staying safe. Homemade pizza is so good. One of my favorites. Home cooking is really the best and it sure is cheaper.

  7. Good morning!

I had to laugh at you cleaning beside the refrigerator, as that is how I do it, too...yardstick and wet rag attached with a rubber band! I don't lay on the floor tho...I sit on a low step stool :)

    Your sandwiches looked so yummy.

I am getting weary of all that is going on---I love hearing about your ordinary days...it sounds a lot like me/us and I find comfort in that. thank you, Cheryl. Wish you lived next door!!

    1. It had to be funny looking - glad no cameras around! LOL
      Thanks - they were tasty.
Yes, I understand - one reason I don't mention much about world events - we get enough.
Just every day stuff here - glad it helps someone. I wish we all had a neighborhood together!!!

  8. You have been a busy lady! Your little rain shower sounds heavenly...we only got a few drops. I would have stood under it too! The windows are open today and the patio door is open so the dogs can go in and out at will. Probably close up pretty soon as the humidity is rising. Our youngest daughter came over for lunch before she had to go to work. We had a nice visit. The Urban Farmer cut the corn off the cob and sauteed it with peppers and onions. Erin brought fried chicken and I fixed mashed potatoes with chicken gravy and opened a can of Grillin' Beans. Simple and enough left over for a lunch. Speaking of farmer, what feed store do you go to? We go to Rural King for chicken feed and just to poke around. We were in Menard's the other day to buy a TV antenna and some flea stuff for the dogs. A mask is required and the place was busy. We went to Meijer the middle of the week and it was not so busy. So far we have had one lonely cucumber and some zucchinis that are about ready. The black raspberries are coming on but not as nice as years past...probably due to dry conditions. Green beans still look straggly. Enjoy your day! I always enjoy hearing about what you are doing.

    1. Just got a little shower yesterday afternoon and one just ended. Love it.
I either go to Rural King or Dammon's for seed.
Fried corn sounds good. Your dinner sounds yummy. I haven't been to Menard's in months but heard a mask was required. Haven't seen a Meijer ad in months.
Sounds like the garden is going well. Have a good one.

  9. You doing great Cheryl! So I've picked a bouquet of Lilly's before and they didn't seem to last long. Do you have a trick to making them last?
It's cool here today compared to what it has been. It's good to get some things done.

    1. Thanks.
I pick the ones with new buds as well as open ones. No they don't last long, but as one flower goes another opens. I change the water daily.
Supposed to cool here come tomorrow.
      Have a good one

  12. I keep waiting for a tomato to get ripe. I think it is going to be a good while. So far, so good with one plant. The other plant is just strange....then the 4 I set late look good. Roger keeps wanting me to bring in a couple green tomatoes...I want to wait but it is hard to not since he seldom asks for anything specific to eat.
