Products - Convenience

We all like convenience and we all need items for our pantry.  I know many have gotten into having groceries delivered.  I still have not tried that - I like to pick out my goods - especially fresh items.  I understand it though.  Some items I have ordered online over the years and it is nice.  There are just things that I can not find locally.  I am sure we have all dealt with that.

I like the company Spices, Etc.  It sells all kinds of spices and herbs - some that I had never heard of before.  They also have extracts, many hard to find ones - and they have powders of all sorts.  There is powdered cheeses, butter, vanilla, honey, soy sauce, buttermilk, vinegar - things you never imagine being powdered.
I have purchased many extract flavorings and many powders over the years.
So much to choose from.

Click on picture to enlarge viewing.  Shows some of the powders.
Now this company isn't super cheap - but you can sure find things that you can't find most places.  Every time I get a sale flier I am amazed at the different products.  Lots of unusual items that would be neat gifts as well.
Check them out online!

I mentioned this in a post a while back and someone was interested.  Instead of buying a big box of Velveeta that may not get used before going stale - these individual packs of Velveeta.  $1 at the Dollar Tree.  They are nice to have in the pantry.

OK I know many would never think about eating Spam - but I like it.  It isn't the best food - but it is tasty.  This is a smaller version of off brand at Dollar Tree.  $1.  A regular can is too much for 1 person and I end of freezing some.  This is about the right size - I cut in 4 slices.   It really is tasty.
I know there are many that would not have this in their homes and that is OK.  Others just like some now and then.
I have many canned meat products in my pantry for the if IT happens!

I love these!  They are a little larger than a hotdog and are so good.  Great cut up in potatoes or beans or cabbage or anything!  Makes a super sandwich.  I buy these when on sale - usually 2 packs/$5 or 2 packs/$6.  I can get anywhere from 3 to 6 meals from a pack - depending on what I am making.  Not a bad price for meat for a meal - .50 or less.
You can get regular, cheese added and even jalapeno.  They are so good.  I love smoked sausage.

So there you go - a few convenience foods and a new place to buy unusual items.
Have a great day!

  1. I've not had groceries delivered. For a long time I've only gone biweekly and I've continued that, trying to stretch when possible, to 3 weeks. I don't order online, I stick with what I have available in town. I will admit to ordering a few items online back in August as they had just not been here for quite awhile d/t supply chain issues but I prefer that not be my norm.

I did a big shop last night at Costco including various toiletries, Vit C and Calcium. A rather spendy outing! And I picked up 10# of Alaskan Sockeye salmon from a local family who goes there to fish seasonally. They just returned with their winter's stock for income. It is sooo yummy and worth every penny. Buy local right?

    1. Yes mam - local is always good. Most of my seasoning extracts and powders I just can't find here.
Those big shops can be pricey. Oh how yummy on the salmon. That is fantastic.

I went out this week to Aldi and that is my first trip there in ages. I only try to go out every 2-3 weeks as well. That is usually a restock for the pets. I am pretty darn good.
      Great job!

  2. Spam, Klik and other canned luncheon meats have been referred to as "and/or meat" b/c the ingredients will read - chicken and/or pork and/or beef!

    1. Yes they are a combo just as many hotdogs, sausages and such.
Never heard of Klik - must be regional.
I know it is a combination - but I still like it! LOL

  3. Thank you, Cheryl. I sometimes buy canned chicken if it's on sale to keep on hand for nights when I just want to be able to throw something together quickly. My sons love Spam, though I don't often buy it; I'll have to try the Dollar Tree version.

We've been working our way through the food stash, because we'd been expecting a cross-country move by the holidays. We've just found out that will be delayed 4-5 months, so I need to stock up again. Another timely post!

    1. You are welcome. I keep canned chicken, beef, pork and tuna on hand. I do get the occasional Spam and even those little canned hams. If something happens and I can't get out - at least I have some source of meat.

I am sorry your plans got changed. But hopefully by the time you move, most places will be back in good weather instead of winter. Get working on the pantry!
Remember - Everything happens for a reason!!!! HUGS

    2. Here in CA, prices are among the highest in the country. Not just gas, utilities, etc. My grocery bill has jumped from $70-is per week to over $100. We'd hoped/prayed there wouldn't be an overlap when my DH retires soon, but yes, God must have a reason for the delay. I'm just grateful I can be creative with meals. Thank you. --Elise

  4. Hey I am all for convenience if you like it, the recipe calls for it, and it is also frugal. I know my dad loved spam as he had it in the service. Remember chipped beef in the can? We had that creamed on toast alot as a kid and I loved it. It is easy to get snotty about food. I just think we all need to be grateful we have enough to eat as many people do not.

    1. I still like chipped beef gravy - I make it with Buddig meats.
You can still buy chipped beef in a jar - Kroger has it.
I am with you. As long as I can eat - I am happy. We need to be grateful for what we have.

  5. I have not eaten spam like products but would not be opposed. I like you am a very price conscience shopper. I can go to a store and only purchase loss leaders. I bought skinner pasta for only 49 cents lb.
Name brand cereal for 1.49 a box, campbells tomato soup 3 cans for $1.00. My freezer is full of meat purchased as loss leaders. Beef ground, steaks and roasts, chicken, pork, shrimp, even lobster tails for special meals. All of this in budget because I shop with purpose every time. I will never have to go without or be hungry for something I do not have. We are coming in to the time for big sales for the holidays and winter. It is time to restock for many things, canned vegetables, soups, broths, oatmeal, flour, sugar and yeast. (I like to bake). I am so grateful for all the lessons you give. I have learned a lot from you and it makes me feel more power in the choices I make. Thanks again!

    1. Many folks are opposed - but we all eat different things - so I don't mind!
I am so pleased you are so stocked and being so frugal with your dollars. Job well done.
I doubt I have helped much - but thank you for the compliment.

I am the same - freezer full, shelves stocked - good to go. My biggest worries are not me - but having enough for the cats. Can't forget those babies!

  6. As usual you do not give yourself credit to the help you give to others. You have a God given gift you share with all of us. You should be proud and happy! I wish I had a gift to share with others.
I can't sing, play an instrument, grow vegetables well (I do try). I can cook so I try to share that with family and neighbors. I am a very good pet Mom, and a very good grandma. I try to bring my grandson into the kitchen when I cook and have him help. He loves it. I did the same with my son and he is a very good cook. My grand son also loves laundry, he likes to put in the washer and dryer. He puts in the soap etc.. and the dryer sheets. He checks the dryer vent to clean it. He enjoys pushing all the buttons. We talk about this every time we are working, so I hope it will all stick. Many people would say I am crazy but why bit teach a child when they are curious or want to help. I think that goes a long way to having an adult, boy or girl that can take care of themselves.

  7. I don't like Spam. I love Treet. None of it is healthy, but I eat it about once a year. I try not to eat processed meats, but sometimes I fail!

  8. I find those canned meats like Spam just a bit too salty. I really did enjoy them back in my growing up days though.

Hopefully things that we worry about will not happen, though more are saying they will.

    God bless.

    1. They are salty - which is why I like them in beans and with veggies. Bacon is salty too and it is used often.
I am not worried. Nothing I can do but pray and prepare - God has us in His loving arms.

  9. That spice catalog would be interesting. We have some unusual (to me) spices and have used them a few times but go back to the familiar. I follow a blogger who buys turkey SPAM and she said it is pretty good. Every day there are more things happening that never happened before in this country. Stay in the Word and stay in prayer.

    1. It is a fun catalogue to look at.
      Never had turkey Spam.
Yes, pray and prepare and have faith. Not worried here.

  10. We are leaving for Hawaii in about 3 weeks. It is the Spam capital of the world! We ordered a combo pizza once when we were there and the meat was Spam! I actually like it fried, but only occasionally. Too salty!

The reason Spam was so "popular" during WW2 is that it was more available that fresh meat. It also kept well without refrigeration, a big plus for the Navy. Most canned meats were imported from neutral South American countries who sold to countries on both sides of the war. South America also produced corned beef and chipped beef. US-produced meats were rationed and most went to the military first. If you want to know how I became such a know-it-all, I was born 9-1/2 months after WW2 ended and my father never touched Spam again, LOL! (Also, I've been reading a lot of books set in WW2).

My favorite convenience food is Idahoan scalloped potatoes. I bought a bunch last week for .78 box. When I don't feel like cooking, a box of scalloped potatoes baked with frozen leftover ham cubes (or Spam!) makes a delicious dinner in 25 minutes with next to no effort.

    1. I understand that Hawaii has so many flavors of spam - some we don't have around here. They do love their Spam.

That is funny your Dad never ate it again. I guess I can understand that. Thanks for the history lesson! It is amazing what people did to have food back then.
I like those potatoes as well. I usually have a couple boxes around.

A trip to Hawaii sounds wonderful - always thought it would be a neat place to go.

  11. I'm trying to get my meals canned up for the pantry. There are a lot of short cut premixes you can make at home and have ready. They save me money over store bought. I do love the sausage and taters with green beans, all in the same pot. That is good stuff! Love your blog

    1. Probably one of my favorite meals is green bean, potatoes and sausage. Add a little sliced tomato and YUM! That is what I grew up on.
It is nice to have meals ready to go just in case of whatever, Makes life easier. Good job.
Thank you and glad to have you here!!!

  12. My mom loves the cheese sauce packets from the Dollar Tree. I will have to check and see if they have them at ours. So much easier than a whole brick of Velveeta when you are cooking for just yourself. Take care.

  13. I have not tried grocery delivery, but did use the shopping service at the height of the pandemic. Was just so-so, when it came to fresh produce and there was a lot of back-and-forth for some items, as the shopper was not familiar with my specific store, only the chain (she usually shopped at other stores and picked up my order and a couple of others on her day off). As for pre-packaged spices, I'm trying to avoid those, unless they're specifically labeled as low-sodium. My dad and his side of the family has a history of congestive heart -- though it's not shown up in my generation, knock on wood. But Mom did some research and put my dad on a strict, strict, strict low sodium diet and probably extended his life by about 10 years. He passed in 2013, and I'm trying, in his memory. Dad was a fan of Spam, but not me. I'll stick with ham, please. Those smoked sausages? Mom used to always cook them up in a pan and serve them with saurkraut -- OK, now I need to find them in the store, my mouth is watering! And will need to look for those Velveta packets.

    1. Most of the spices I have gotten from Spice Etc. have been straight spice - no additions.
I can sure understand your being aware of the salt.

The smoked sausages are wonderful with kraut. I may be doing that in a few days. The cheese is handy and tasty.

  14. Like Practical Parsimony, I also don't like Spam, but love Treet. We probably eat a can of it once a month or so. I like the cans of corn beef and I love tuna. I seem to have a craving for tuna. We probably go through 2 or 3 cans a month. I've never tried the chicken, but plan on getting some this week. We haven't had many shortages so far. We live in rural West Virginia and we stay stocked up on food and toiletries in case of bad winters. We live in the mountains, an hour from town.
Cheryl I enjoy your blog very much.

    1. Hi Flora. I haven't had Treet in years but have had Spam. My brother loves canned corn beef and Spam and I include a couple of each in his holiday gift basket. I keep all kinds of canned meats - tuna, chicken, beef, pork, etc. JUST IN CASE.

It is great to stay stocked - you just never know. Glad you are finding most things you need. It sounds like you live live in a little piece of 'heaven on earth'.
So glad to have you here. Thank you!!!!!!!

    2. Yes, I've tried Spam, and didn't like it. It is also more expensive than Treet.
It is a cold 41 here today and rainy. Guess it's that time of year. Happy Halloween
