Some Days I Reminisce

Do you ever just sit some days and think back?  Think of simpler times?  Think of all those days that are long gone as well as the people?  Think about times have CHANGED?

Changed they have.  I think back to the 60's and 70's and life was just slower.  Sure I was young - but in the 70's I was married, working and buying a home.  Still life was different.  We had fun.  We enjoyed days off.  We didn't worry about what others thought.  People weren't offended by anything and everything.
It was a time where the one thing everyone hated was War - but that was about it.  People enjoyed people and we had fun.  Life was simple.

Sunday dinners and get family togethers was a thing.  Music was enjoyed thoroughly.  Dress was whatever you felt like wearing.  We loved the earth and nature.  We hated war - but not each other.

I think back to the Woodstock time - how amazing that was.  Tens of thousands of people (strangers) all in one spot (in the rain) - with little food and sanitary options - and they all got along!!!!  No riots, no destruction, no fighting - just a whole lot of people enjoying the moment.

I remember as a child we read books, we played on the front porch with jacks or pick-up stix, we made forts from old boxes, we waded in creeks, we drank Kool-Aid and ate peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, we rode bicycles, we helped in the garden, we took walks, we picked grapes and ate them right off the vine, we ate green apples, we drank from the hose, we were safe and made the best of simple things.  We ENJOYED it.
Even when I first married and worked and had a home - we had no AC - so some days it was just lay across the bed in front of window with a breeze and nap or read.  We camped, we still rode bikes out on country roads and we still took walks - we didn't complicate things.  Groups of friends would vacation together.  We enjoyed life.

Today everyone complicates everything.  Everyone is offended by things.  People can't seem to mind their own business.  People worry about too much.
REMEMBER - today is the day you worried about yesterday!!
People don't seem to have common sense today - I guess that is a thing of the past.
Morals and good judgement seem to be waning.
The  world and many people in it just sadden me today.

I would love to live in a less complicated world - like the old days.
I guess I have to go there in my memory and dreams - as I don't think it will ever happen again.
I try to keep life simple and uncomplicated.  I still enjoy the simple things.  I still love nature and the earth.  I still enjoy family.  I still enjoy reading a book and the breeze of a lovely day.
I wish that was enough for everyone!

PEACE and LOVE to you all!

  2. Totally agree......
Sad how things are changing and not for the better in many areas
I feel sad for the younger generation who will not know the past years and how things could be.....glad I’m “ old” and not young in today’s world.

  4. My grandchildren will never know my world growing up. In fact, they are old enough now to wish life was the way I had it or their parents (now around 50 ish) had it.

    1. It sure is sad. There was so much to enjoy and life was fun. Not all "oops someone is offended".

  5. I remember those days too. Some days I wish life wasn't so busy, even being retired I'm busy. I just would like to take a vacation from my life and read a book! But I am the master of my life so I guess I can!

    1. Yes mam - you can, and need to. I really don't know why we are so hard on ourselves today. If it gets done - fine. If it don't - well fine there too!!! If you leave this earth tomorrow it doesn't matter whether you got it done or not!
      Pick your battles.

  6. We're in our 70s and we both remember that on weekends and summer days we simply left the house in the mornings and just returned when we got hungry. We wandered from friend to friends house or to the park. Nobody would let their child do that nowadays. But I really wonder if life is so much more dangerous now than it was then???????

    1. Did the same things. I know you hear of things (bad) more because of technology. Is it worse - probably - but there were still bad people then too. It was just kept hush hush. I know I had an uncle that we just stayed away from if possible - everyone knew he was a perv - but no one said anything.

    2. The Cancel Culture is about CONTROL. Of everything. Of the news, of politics, of people, of our minds, and of our livlihoods and everything.

The Cancel Culture wants to allow only their views, to be able to be held.

The End of Freedom, of just about every kind.

  8. Today's parents are probably both working now whereas when I grew up we had more stay at home Moms, so it was easy to stay out in the neighborhood and play all day. We used to get into the creek too. LOL, such good times back then. I'm glad I grew up when I did even if that makes me old now. LOL

  9. A lot of things that are going on in the world right now are REALLY starting to get to me. I've had to stop watching any news because I can literally feel my blood pressure going up. This cancel culture has got to stop. I mean Mr. Potato Head? Dr. Seuss? Really? I'm glad to know there are people that see things the same as I do. At least we have good memories.

    1. There are lot's like you and many feel the same way. Seriously, it's a toy or a book - if you don't like it - don't get it!!!!! SIMPLE SOLUTION.
I only watch local news never national any more - and local is almost too much to handle.

    2. I guess I find this rather sad that you're okay with Asian caricatures. I find those drawings offensive, perhaps because my son is Asian. Would you also want to bring back Little Black Sambo? And those simpler times included things like being able to fire teachers who were pregnant, redlining, and other discriminatory policies. Personally, I don't want to go back to those times, but I'd like to make these times better for everyone.

    3. I see caricatures of all peoples - not just one group. I have seen movies and cartoons of all types of people - from country folk who were down on their luck and not so smart to different cultures. If they offend me - I choose not to watch. I will never demand that they be removed because I don't like them. That is not my right.

I was reliving my childhood which was good. I do not apologize for that. Sure I had some bad times. I was a sickly child and I was bullied early in life - but I choose to concentrate on the good things.
It makes me sad that others have to find all the bad and focus on that - instead of all the good.
We have learned a lot as a society - and we probably have a lot more to learn. But NEVER will I demand that you MUST follow my beliefs. We are individuals thank God.

    4. So you've seen the drawings and are okay with Asians being portrayed that way and just don't recognize the harm it can do, especially to children. I'm glad that the people who administer the Seuss estate did understand the harm. Even Geisel understood and apologized. You feel if someone has the right to discriminate it's okay if it's their belief that other races are less than, but I feel that we need to call out discrimination and end it.

    5. I have seen the books and what I see are cartoon characters in imaginary scenes - not images of actual people. I have never taken the books seriously. I have never once in my life thought the images were real. I do not believe in censorship nor banning. Where does it stop, once you get on the slippery slope. Shakespeare because images and words are disturbing, classics like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Wizard of Oz or The Grapes of Wrath?

Maybe instead of banning or censoring things - people could use them as a way of teaching children how NOT to discriminate. They can become tools.

I will NEVER stand for censorship. That is me and my belief.

  11. -happy sigh- Lovely memories of the past...

Today, with all the screaming and blaming, we are told to be ashamed of our past. To castigate ourselves, over having had simple pleasures. To beat ourselves up, because we were/are white and it gave us such "wonders".

Yes, I know, there are, and were bad things done. And they should not be repeated.

But do we, have to be ashamed, just for BEING???? NOOOOOO!!!! -sigh-

    1. Yep. We need to remember for both good and bad. Do not repeat the bad and instill the good - there has been much.
I am who I am and not ashamed, nor will I ever be.

  12. There was good, but also a lot of bad like discrimination and family violence. Some people have had decades trying to come to terms with their past. Now these things are out in the open and less easily accepted.

  13. I remember playing outside after supper chasing fire flies, baseball, hide and seek, or biking. There were many kids running around. What saddens me is today I see nary a child out playing or bike riding, Where are they? Inside the house, warping their minds on tv and internet. I'm glad I was able to raise my kids in the same manner I was raised. I'm so glad that I'm not raising kids today and also I'm glad my parents and inlaws are not living in this virus world. Simple was simple - today there are way too many choices. You go to get laundry soap and there's 100 different varieties to choose from. It's mind boggling and stressful. Even our food now is different. We pay a lot for food with no taste because it isn't real food. In my day, we enjoyed the fruits and veggies of the seasons. Nothing better than coming home from playing all day to have fresh, juicy, strawberry short cake made with the strawberries we picked, not bought. Yes, to me, those were the days!!

    1. AMEN!! Yep, we played outside and used our imaginations. We had to figure things out. TV, if you had it, was a luxury. Thank goodness no computers. Just our minds and our friends.
      Good old days!!!
You are so right about all the choices and food today is not at all like it used to be.

  14. My childhood was not so rosy as yours. There were predatory men. There were class distinctions. There was blatant discrimination against aboriginal people. There was no free health care and poor quality of doctors in our little town. Prejudices were taught at the dinner table. People were judged and catalogued. Immigrants were d.p.'s and that had bad connotations. People bettered themselves by stepping on other people. I prefer today's world socially. Environmentally it is worse today but back then nobody cared about protecting the environment either. I always thought Dr. Seuss was crap and happy to see less of it. Never read a single book of his to my children. Did you know that in one of Laura I.Wilder's books she describes the prairies as empty of people. Just wild animals and Indians. She reveals her families prejudices there and that is the way it was but it can't stay that way forever. We are one world. We are one race, the human race. As the population explodes there will be more conflict, exploitation, etc. Climate change is destroying habitat and forcing migration. Drug addiction is responsible for much crime today. There are so many problems; where to start to fix them? Respect, have civilised discourse, don't grasp for more than your fair share. Don't be blind to the problems of the past that are due to be corrected. I wish you could still have your lovely world. How lucky you were and still are, for the most part.

    1. First I am very sorry you had that kind of past. I am not sure where you live - but no matter - it is horrible to have gone through those things.
I do agree with you saying we are one race - the human race. We need to show more respect for others, and not try to force our beliefs on other people.
We have become a entitled society, not sure where that came from. Hard work and persistence is how we should get things, not just because I deserve it.
Be blessed and have a great day.

    1. Of course there were problems that we can't and shouldn't ignore - but the times were so much simpler.
We knew how to make fun!

  16. Yup, it seemed simpler back then for sure. Definitely not perfect but much simpler. We'd ride our bikes all day without a care in the world, had sleepovers with cousins, ran around our grandparents property, drank kool-aid by the jug full, played pick up sticks and old maid, caught fireflies in jars that our grandmother always saved because she knew how much we loved doing that, ate green apples right off our grandparents tree, ate blackberries right off the vine, all the neighbors would go to the drive-in on Friday nights and we'd lay on the hood of the cars with our blankets, we'd catch little tadpoles after a good summer storm and on and on. Like I said it wasn't perfect but it was definitely simpler. I'm sure you meant to relive a simpler time by sharing some good memories but some of the comments show what you mean about everyone being offended these days. Oh well, you're not gonna please everyone. I'm glad you have good memories. Hold onto them. I know I do. Stay safe!

    1. Yes, I was reliving past memories. I do that often, as I can still be young and have people who are gone, in my mind. That is a good thing!!
We made our fun - we got creative - our fun was simple. No computers and TV to clutter our growing minds. Sure there were problems and bad things and bad people. But my little world was pretty darn good - and for that I do not apologize.

I am sorry if others had bad times - it is horrible. Things no one should have to go through. I hope they can find peace.

  18. What bothers me today is the way our government and those in high places try to legislate everything. You can't change people's hearts with legislation and rules. It has to come from the inside out and it starts with each one of us. Yes, there is prejudice, but rules and regulations won't change that. People will change that with their attitudes and actions. There are poor people, but government handouts and free things haven't and won't change that. Opportunity and education are necessary to change people's circumstances.

We are the answer to the problems of our world. We have allowed things to happen with our silence and behavior. Our world didn't get into the condition we now see overnight. It took generations. Good people stopped participating in government at the local level. People stopped going to church. Mom's went to work and left the schools to handle their children. When you really think about it, our homes are even constructed in such a way that we are in the back yard and there is no alley. No one sits on the front porch anymore.

We try very hard to be neighborly in small ways. We take Christmas treats to the neighbors. My husband offers to help or loan tools others need. We talk to neighbors when we see them. It has made a huge difference. We go to church and see our friends and socialize as well as learn from the message. We try to have friends over for meals. I take food to friends who are ill. Yes, it would be easier to stay on our deck in the back yard. However, we wouldn't know our neighbors and we wouldn't have friends.

Unfortunately, we live is an instant society where we want everything now. It needs to be delivered to the front door. There are drive by windows at dry cleaners, banks, pharmacies, and fast food places. There is no young man who throws the newspaper. In our neighborhood there is no mailman who walks the street stopping at each home to deliver mail. There's no local gas station where someone pumps your gas, cleans you windshield, and checks your oil. All of this isolation has turned us into a society that judges others they don't even know. We don't know when people need help.

Unfortunately, we are even more isolated by the virus. Many people live in fear now. I have several friends that have not left their homes except to see a doctor in almost a year. I am careful and try to go shopping during when the stores aren't crowded. I have left meals on porches several times because people don't want to come out of their homes.

The change has got to start with each of us. Our attitudes must change, but it will be slow. It may not even be our generation which reaps the reward. Hopefully, my children and grandchildren will enjoy a better life. I know this works. I have two very dear friends who are of another race. We even get stared at when we go out to lunch! I provided a week's worth of meals for one of these friends when they were convalescing after a month long hospital stay. Each individual counts. Yes, I miss my grandmother's very much. But, I try to remember the old ways they taught me. I miss old movies and TV shows, but you can find most of those on You Tube and free channels you can get with an antennae. I have always tried to make our home a place that felt safe and was fun. The reward has been having all four of my children close by. They all tried living away in other states, but came home within a couple of years because they missed our family. Remember, you can always do something! Blessings! PJ

    1. PREACH IT!!!!! AMEN!!
You have hit the nail on the head - it is up to us - every single one of us. I still front porch sit as do many of my neighbors. I love my alley - as people dog walk and trash pick - and admire yards.
I DO have a mailman that comes door to door and love it. My last mailman retired last year after being my mailman for over 30 years!!!!!! I have a guy throw the paper - but from a car.

So many feel entitled. You and I were taught you work for everything you have. You earn it. You don't just take. It was a matter of honor and self esteem.

Like you I went out during the past year. No one was going to make me stop living life. I took/take precautions and kept safe.

Life is short, so we need to enjoy it every day. Stop crying about the past and what we don't have or how we have been slighted - and live with gusto. Remember the good stuff for memories and remember the bad stuff for example.

I have several friends that are bi-racial couples and have been married since before that was cool. I have gay friends. I have men friends and I have women friends. I am friends with young people and people of all sorts of nationalities. I am nice to whoever I meet.
Not one is better than the other. I can be friends with you and not believe what you believe.
      That is called life.

      Love you response. Thank you!

  19. I enjoy hearing you reminisce about your childhood. It is up to us to try to bring back the good things, i.e. family meals, actually having a conversation with someone, helping neighbors, smiling at folks, and I think this is most important of all, courtesy. I do think in these unsettled days that we will see a return to Christian values and a hunger for drawing close to Elohim. I agree with your Unknown commenter. She has lots of excellent points and I read through it twice!

  20. Dear Rita, I am sorry to hear that you had a pretty unwell childhood. Mine was not ideal, with a fair share of discrimination, but my parents reinforced my self worth & I knew that they were on my side. They fought back where they could & survived tough breaks, the Great Depression & WWII. I took courage from their example & am stronger for it. I hope that you are a beacon for those less fortunate who are still struggling. Your compassion stands out!! KMC
